    One tool worth buying old you may not think about is files nickelson Simmonds mercer. It goes in that order of quality and how good/expensive they were. Old files once cleaned of rust if they were made in usa or Germany and pre 1970s were solid hardened steel sometimes even 5160 spring steel. This means they are gonna work forever for the most part and be sharper than modern ones. New files are case hardened so .002 thousands of a inch of hardened surface on the outside and garbage soft metal on thr inside. Once you get past the case hardening it's a butter knife at best. Rasps are soft metal as well no matter the age so avoid thoes only files. No one makes files in thr usa anymore and there's only 2 3 brands japan Germany swiss left that make something worth using. Next time the free box has rust files it in look for thoes names and made in usa clean it up and you have a file or knife if you grind it down for life.

    Beautiful little pieces of history. The good ol days when klein was called klein and sons and everything came out of chicago. Thanks for sharing w us. I think the best i got are klein screwdrivers from the 90s. But im gonna take a gander at old kleins or possibly german tools

    I restored old rusty tools for a hobby for a long time getting stuff in good shape is hard. I do have a handful of old tools I collected and work great but scared they may disappear on a jobsite. I have needlenose linemans and side cutters (1922 1928 1921) all klein and perfect logos. Functionality that works great even on 12/2 romex. The one I actually use often is a bell systems by stanley 1908 little 4in total length screwdriver (tweaker) that has a dark black walnut handle and was made in 1908 😨. They made some good old stuff back then and don't knock using them if there cheap enough and you don't mind loosing them. My oldest I found was a 1910s ish verified by klein themselves linemans which I ended up selling as a collectable for big money. I didn't win the oldest pair of kleins contest but only by 5 Or 6 years when klein did that contest. If you find one a wire wheel on the body and scotchbrite belt or pad on the logo will clean them up nicely without degrading the steel. If you get a pair and don't like the grips they do make them or heatshirks works as well. My favorite grip for one of these is called am milkers grip ussaly for rebar tie pliers. Good luck with vintage tools start slowly.

      It is fun looking around for them. I had a pair of 1917 Lineman’s I was watching but I missed out on them. They looked like they were in good shape

    • @MattHmm-rq6dn
      @MattHmm-rq6dn หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      1917 or 1928 they didn't change really and from what I understand they had high amounts of mollybuelum (like comolly steel) in them making them exceptionally tough. I think the levels they used were banned in manufacturing for being toxic or heavy pollution. That from my understanding is why they could never make tools like they did back in the day.

  • @OnusBones
    @OnusBones หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    That's really neat. I can't help but look at things like that and realize that once upon a time they were brand new. I wonder how long they were used? Did some tradesman earn a living with those tools? You are holding some pieces of history right there.
    I haven't specifically gone down that rabbit hole, but many of my tools are new because this Spring I replaced most of the pawn shop tools I bought in the mid 90s when the ex-gf-from-Hell saw to it that I was broke for years.

    They must have been used very rarely.
    Overall today's tools are much better than old tools - they are MUCH cheaper and often better made, because only since 1990s we managed to make steel production 100% repeatable.
    Prior to that, foundries newer knew what will come out of blast furnace. So in order to compensate for that, some tool manufacturers forged their tools, but it was time and money consuming. So good hand tools were extremely expensive.

      @MORGANSMaintenance  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Stefan_Kawalec yeah they were in really good shape… really better than I expected even from the pictures. I decided to get these just for the price. There are some that are crazy expensive just because they are old, but that are in pretty rough shape.
