    This is video #3 from filming at the start of the year, and perhaps the last big video of 2019. There's a couple more "fun" tests, such as studs vs friction on ice, and can changing tyre pressure help with grip on snow, but I'm not sure these will ever be released.     The budget tyre did great. It's perfectly safe for normal driving. Drive slowly in wet and snowy weather regardless od which tyre you choose.

      I live in sweden and work as a truck driver. Most privaters cut the speed atleast 2/3 even when raining........they could use electrical tape and be fine with the speeds most are doing....

      I live in the states. If anything the nuts speed up in icy and snowy conditions and yell at those of us who slow down that WE don't know how to drive in it.

    It would be interesting to see a test in which cheap new winter tyres are compared to expensive used winter tyres (like 4-5mm of tire tread depth left)

      i can say that shittiest winter tire is worse in dry asphalt and icy asphalt then avarage summer tire. only better thing is snow areas where this shittiest winter tire is better

      @@RoccoH Their reference tire is probably a European winter tire. There are Nordic winter tires, and European winter tires. Nordic winter tires beats both European winter tires, and European all seasons with a very wide margin on ice. And narrowly beating them on snow. On the other hand they are worse on dry/wet tarmac. The best performing tire depends on where you are driving:

    I live in Sweden, I crashed my old 1995 Volvo 850 in march 2019 because of black ice and old tyres, thought I was safe, going only 60 on a 100 kph road, but the car lost traction and spun into the guardrail, the fire department had to cut the roof off to get me out, luckily I was alone in the car.
    Now I have a 2000 Volvo V70 Classic, which is the safest car I can afford, being married and having three young children I decided to buy the safest tyres on the market, which is the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 (195/65R15 for the V70), this gives me peace of mind since I know that they are the safest ones, both in snow and on ice.
    Unfortunately I can't afford them, but I just have to postpone some other bills so I can pay for the tyres, my family's safety comes first.
    Kiitos Nokian for keeping us safe.

      Yes only if the are fresh. Try imagine what will looks like after 3 years after production date. Budget tyres tends to harden more quickly - dangerous for winter tyre.

I've had some cheap budget winter tires on my car for the last 3 years now and they still have plenty of threads left in them but they dont performe good on either snow or ice anymore. Yesterday i put some Goodyear Ultragrip Ice 2 on my car and they performe so much better than what the low budget winter tires did when they was new.

    7:56 the funny thing is sometimes you dont want an overly good braking car, more than a few accidents happen when cars plough into the back in that situation. have actually seen it happen, usually in modern disc brake cars slamming on the brakes with a tailgater or cars with higher visibility seeing something happening ahead. always assume the car behind can't slow down fast as you and brake progressively, especially with heavy vehicles behind you

    Very interesting.
    As expected there is a small but measurable advantage for a premium tyre over a cheap one, but in any case even a budged winter tyre performs a lot better than wathever summer tyre.
    So for people (like me) that live in a country where it may not snow for two winters in a row and temperature is rarely below zero, but winter tyres are still mandatory by law, a budget tyre can be a reasonable choice, specially because they can be changed more frequently, and I suspect that a brand new budget tyre may confront well against a premium tyre at its third winter. This could be an interesting test.

    Great video as always, I like the fact you had a larger saloon as it was fascinating seeing the difference vs the smaller tyre and vehicle! It was incredibly relevant as the family cars we have both use those respective sizes!

    I thought that for once in my life I will see an unbiased comparison of tires.
    Comparing Nokian winter tire to Tristars tire whose profile looks like all season is not a fair comparison. You should compare tires with similar profile at least. Tristar’s Snow power HP would be better to compare.
    I never buy cheap tires but still, for the fairness of the tests they should compare similar threads.
    Otherwise it looks as if Nokian or any other known manufacturer is afraid of budget tires. If you are the best, you should not be afraid of competition.
    Where I live, we heave really a lot of snow every year. And I change tires every two years due to the mileage I do. I drove on fresh snow, old snow, ice with Hankook, Nokian, Vredstein, Nexen, Bridgestone, Uniroyal and I could not see or feel any difference. The only difference there was, was tire noise and price.

      what part of sweden? I'm in stockholm. Someone persuaded me to try Good Year. Winter has been mild so far so I have no way of knowing if they are as good at the Nokian I had on my old 2006 volvo v70

      There is no real life difference in almost any tires today. For every day NORMAL driving beside what you said about noise, any tires is pretty much safe choice. 99% of these tests are biased towards premium brands.
      Now if you drive like a maniac, that's a different story

      This was exactly what I was thinking. In one of his videos he even says that tyres with an asymmetric profile will never perform as well in winter conditions as tyres with a symmetric profile. The budget tyre looks like an all season tyre.

      Friend and i had the Nokian Hakkapelitta 5 tread pattern on our tires... i had Nordman 5, he had [China]
      He was all over the damn road, it was rediculous... i coulda gone 20km/h faster than him, if i wasnt following him to know the way... Tread makes some diffrence, but rubber compound makes aaaalll the diffrence

    I got one for you @tyre reviews : the comparison between a new premium snow tyre, but with few years on it vs a new budget tyre. So the question would be if the premium tyres are still any good after few years, even if they are in very good condition?

      @@tyrereviews All the effort you will have to put in and the comments you will get make me feel sorry for you already. I think it is almost impossible to do a "fair", conclusive test of worn winter tires. Age does change the behavior, obviously less thread changes the behaviour, road chemicals, uv light, did the user put to much or not enough pressure in the tires... But i would still watch it!

      @@nirfz There's 1 fair way to wear tyres. You can't just sand them as it doesn't allow them to deform as they would really so the wear pattern isn't realistic. You need to have weight on them and get them to spin against a rough surface. Best way: if Jon still has his M4 he'll have to stick the tyres on the back of it and do burnouts (at very scientifically chosen RPM and all that of course). It's a tough job.

      @@tyrereviews but just to give you more context: I bought Blizzak LM20 with 7mm on them (so like new ones), but they had few years already and I think they weren't stored properly because in the wet they don't handle at all, which on a rwd gives a lot of fun, but Im guessing that in the snow they will not be very good as well. Anyways, I'm thinking if I should buy some new budget tyres - maybe they will be better, considering winters in europe are getting warmer every year.

    I have been an advocate for winter tires for over 20 years. So far I haven't seen anything beat a Blizzak but I have heard that Nokian Hakkapeliitta is also a good tire. I now own both but have no snow to compare them. I would love to see these put to a comparative test.

      @@sting40121 Because this video compares the tires withing the same category. What you want is to compare apples to oranges. Obviously a cheap winter tire will be better than a premium all-season tire in winter conditions due to its winter specific thread pattern and compound.

    Problem is Nokian have been caught cheating in tests. They've been sending tires with improved rubber to those doing the tests, while in stores the same model tire was being sold with a worse rubber.
    And this test is being conducted at Nokian's own facility. Can't trust it too much.

      Tests are BS, speak to people that actually use the tyres. Studded nokians are one of, if not the best winter tyres on the market. This after driving a few hundred thousand kilometers on icy roads.

      @@hampuslytz5393 I ran Nokian Nordman 7's in 245-75/16 on my Jeep Grand Cherokee, studded are not allowed in my state, I live in northern Michigan. They were great tires but expensive. When they needed replacement I bought some budget winters, Champiro IcePro SUV's in the same size. While the Nokians had marginally better performance in acceleration the braking and turning improvement was negligible. The price however was not, the 4 Champiro's were less than half the Nokians.

      @@charliedee9276 Yeah like I said, studded nokians are one of if not the best winter tires on the market. Studless regardless of brand are an entirely different thing.
      Ran Hakkapeliitta R (IIrc) studless on my XT Forester 215/75-16, grip at takeoff was ok, (may have been thanks to subaru drivetrain) but cormering and braking was a nightmare. Had front wheel drive cars bere it that would corner far better with studded tires than the subaru did with studless. 😎

    Thanks for this great video. Very professional. I live in the snow belt in southern Ontario and have been driving here for 40 years. The shittiest snow tire is still better than an all season. Only had one semi poor snow: the Michelin Alpin X. My favourites: michelin, nokian, bridgestone. If you have deep snow a lot, you need a chunky, noisy tread. This is where the Alpin X failed. Ice and thin snow need a different design. I live in the country and when it is cold (below -7C), the grip is phenomenal. Near freezing is the worst for grip. I find I drive the same speed in most conditions, summer or winter (80km/hr). For black ice, you want a great tire and a lightweight front wheel drive car like a Civic.

    Good test, but adding a mid-grade option would have been very useful as well.
    Something like General Arcticmax would have been great as a 3rd option.

    I have Nokian Wr D4 winter 215/55 R17 on my Suzuki Vitara and i absolutely love it.
    They are great on snow and ice, quit and very comfortable... Highly recommend

    Budget one is definitely geared for city dwellers whose main fear is sliding through intersections, with no concerns about speed. The premium one is obviously the only choice for any highway driving - say, to the ski resort (or Canadian inter-city road trips the length of several European countries). I feel like some mid-range all weathers would do just as well as the budget winters, and they'd save you the cost of summer tires.

    I think budget tires serve a purpose for people that don’t have the money to pay out extra 100 to 200 dollars. Of course safety should always be on top of everyone’s mind, but that’s not always the case. On to other things, I think the test was a little skewed in the essence that you have one asymmetrical tire and one symmetrical tire. One has lots of Siphes, but closed blocks and narrow channels, to the Nokian that also has lots of siphes, directional, huge blocks and huge channels to get rid of snow and disperse water. Maybe run the test again with another budget friendly tire with a similar tread pattern and maybe a middle of the road tire as well? I would also like to give you and nokian thanks for these videos. Really in-depth and show the actual tests. It’s shows people real time how two tires are different. Thanks again.

      Interesting observation for sure. I'd like these Nokian's compared to something like Cooper Tire Evolution Winter (since I just bought them for my Mini Cooper, can't wait for the first snow to test them).

      bokiNYC I have continental wintercontact si’s for my Jetta, they handle pretty well in the snow. My cousin runs cooper’s evolution winter tire without studs and he said they are amazing in the snow. So I think you won’t be disappointed. Good luck and stay safe.

    I’ve always used brand winter tires, but I got myself some mid-grade (not the cheapest ones) winter tires this year. I figured if I’m only keeping the car for 3-4 years, a mid-grade should do the job. The difference in price is definitely interesting! I’m excited to test them this winter knowing I’ll drive a bit more slowly and carefully in case these tires suck 😅

      They used generic cheapest Chinese tyre Tristar snowpower 2 that uses same generic pattern as other chinese brands, just type TRACMAX S210, minerva s210 etc (www.idealo.co.uk/compare/5709252/tracmax-s210-235-55-r19-105v.html) and you will see what i am talking about. They even use that same pattern for summer tyre with les cuts in grooves m.yuanlaitai.com/semi-steel-radial-tire/passenger-car-tires/strong-enforced-run-flat-tires.html
      Why they did not use BFGoodrich gForce Winter 2 or Apollo alnac 4g winter (apollo is realy cheap) those are budget tyres comapred to tyres like continental ts860, goodyear and dunlop or that nokian.

    I think that the difference in the wet would've been even bigger with a better premium tyre, the Nokian is really good in the snow and the dry but unfortunately it's one of the worst premium tyres in the wet. I appreciate that Nokian made the whole video happen and I'm glad they did and I understand you couldn't really criticize their tyre, especially since you didn't have an extra reference point to compare it against.

    Just bought and mounted a set of Michelin Alpin 6. A midrange set might have saved me a hundred bucks, but honestly, that's 25-30 a year, over the lifetime of those tires, and the security they give me is easily worth that much to me.
    My only annoyance was that the only size that was legal for my winter rims-205/50R16-was a lot more expensive and had fewer choices than e.g. the more common 205/55R16. But I can only mount that on my car after getting it TÜV-approved, and then they'd probably want me to recalibrate the speedo, …, and all of that would cost me more than paying the difference for 10 years. Germany's car rules are dumb in some regards.

      PS: The website- www.tyrereviews.co.uk -has grown into an invaluable tool for deciding what to get, with the official tests and user reviews, etc. The user interface could still use some work, IMHO, it wasn't always as easy as I'd have liked to find what I looked for, and e.g. the keyword search really needs some fuzziness and be accessible front and center on the site, but the amount of data alone was still _great!_

      @@Runoratsu A fair assumption. I wouldn't know about all of them. I just heard that you can get stuff done if you follow the rules, whatever they happen to be. Where I live, most people don't really care about the rules, they're more or less used as tools to fail inspections. But following said rules doesn't guarantee a pass either. One place will accept a TÜV certificate, other places only allow a completely factory car on the road. In fact, most inspectors will not even deem a bone stock factory car road worthy if they're not familiar with the specific model. The only 100% sure way to always have a road legal car is to just keep buying brand new cars.

      Nokian has actually cheated in tests before, they have supplied testers with better tires than the normal retail versions. Probably too expensive to mass produce the better versions.

    what would be interesting would be a follow-up premium all-season vs budget winter.. There are still people that believe that their all-season are good enough for winter driving because of various reasons and it would be nice to know if even a budget set of winter tires still beats out the best all-seasons..

    Just swapped out a set of Michelin Pilot Sport AS 4's for Bridgestone Blizzak WS90's and the difference is night and day on my Fiesta ST, when driving here in southern Wisconsin.

    I also did a test like this
    With Michelin super sport vs michelin alpin.
    In the rain ( no snow they scatter salt to melt the snow) it was 1 degree C
    And I did A brake test and acceleration and corner speed test. I measured speed and distance with draggy and the summer tyre won! 😁 i did this to know if it really was worth it to buy a new set of wintertyres if you dont have a lot of snow but just low temps. Can you also do a test like this ? I am very curious

    I have champiro on my Honda Odyssey and bridgestone on my Acura MDX. As far as everyday driving the thing that stands out for me is the champiro are noisier on the hiway.
    Obviously they won't beat out more expensive tires but if you don't have or just don't want to spend the extra $400 to $700 the champiro (Chinese)is a good alternative.
    Ive had them on my van for 3 seasons now.

    Drive to the conditions, and dont push your tires to the limit.
    If you worry about braking distance, drive a bit slower and follow the 4-second rule.

    Great video .... I think the tests say everything. There is only one thing that I don`t agree with and it`s not about the tyres - understeer is hell of a lot more dangerous than oversteer. With oversteer you always have a chance to get a hold of the car, and it stops faster if it slides sideways .... understeer in a FWD car is just watching how you hit the first obstacal ahead of you.

      Except that to "get a hold of it" in an oversteering FWD car, you have to be adding power to pull the front around to where you're going, preventing you from slowing down. I've been there, done that, in a crappy FWD 1980s Dodge/Mitsubishi Colt subcompact on an interstate with suddenly almost zero traction. It's not fun deciding whether you are better off letting the spin happen, vs failing to slow down, with cars slowing in front of you at least a little bit, and steel guardrails on both sides. I did manage to stay a couple of feet from all of the above, but it was a good 20 seconds of absolute battle with little margin for error, where several times it appeared that it would have been smarter to have initially just gone into the car in front of me. The actual speeds were maybe 60mph, and the closing speeds at most times were very low, maybe 2-5mph, but in some ways everything happening in slow motion like that, just prolonged the uncertainty of whether bad news was about to arrive from behind, possibly while somewhat sideways.

    Before I watch this video after seeing the thread pattern on both tires I would like to make this comment and state, that budget would loose everywhere except probably on clean (no snow) wet surface because just... Just look at the budget ones! This kind of pattern won't give you shit on snow. It looks almost like summer tire comparing with premium ones. Premium has much more aggressive pattern and of course has much more grip on snow

    Some of these tests are only 1% difference. The worst was 11% on the big Volvo. I'm guessing the Nokian are probably 50-60% more money. Nope. Sorry. Even the budget winter tires are WAY better than an all season.

    I live in Paris, FR and have a Volvo S80 mk2. Last year I had Nexen winter tires from the previous owner, very average. Even though I only was driving in the city, as soon as I touched the throttle the front wheels (FWD) were spinning in the wet, the tires could not manage the torque (400nm). Sometimes the performance were bad even on dry roads. I was surprised the DSTC never attempted to correct anything through the winter, and those were 2yo / 13 000km tires so definitely not very old. This year, I bought the Nokian WR A4. I've had them for the last week and they are real tires. The handling is more precise, I floored it a few times and it takes off way better in the wet or dry. Now, I'm just waiting for the snow. You can't go wrong with Nokian, if I'm correct they are fitted as OEM winter tires on Volvo cars ?

    Just bought some nokia r3 after not being happy with my blizzak ws80s. Side note I have the og blizzaks ws15 and they were monsters and so good. Have not gotten to use my nokians yet but excited to. And they are on this very car golf mk7.

    “Let’s see if it does any better on the Volvo, I have a feeling it won’t” When a test relies so much on driver input, having the driver assume at the start of the test that it will do poorly is about as far away from an objective test as you can get. Truly ridiculous.
    This should be done with the driver not knowing what tire he has.

      I agree with this. After watching ProjectFarm, I question the objectivity of testing like this, especially when the poster is pushing a specific brand at the end, not disclosing whether he has any sponsorships from said company.

      Whilst it would be better to do a blind test, a decent driver would figure it out in seconds anyway. With this kind of testing you have to rely on the integrity of the tester and it's better than no testing or just taking the manufacturers word for it.

    Question. We have a pair of cross climates on a golf that gets driven... With spirit. They're only 15inch wheels I think with large side walls. I was convinced the life of them would be shorter, due to the soft compound for snow driving, yet they have managed to last over 20K! Does the sidewall thickness effect tyre wear. So the larger the profile, the longer they'll last?

      Nope, Michelins just tend to wear really well. I've seen reports of 60k from CrossClimates!

    I'm in North America, and when I see "budget winter tires", I think of something like the Firestone Winterforce, with a tread block design pattern along the lines of the Nokian tested in this video. I've been running them for several winters now, and they're very solid performers, although I've never had the opportunity to test a "premium" winter tire.

      Several members of our fire department run Winterforce tires on their personal trucks, and think they're great. I'm not sure as I don't have any personal experience with them. I wish someone would do comprehensive testing of ALL true winter tires on the North American market; Consumer Reports only tests about ten.

I'll give a review once I've had them for a while. I know Mich's are good. I'm a Swede so have had a few sets of winter tyres though these are my first all season tyres 👍

      @@VinDieselS70 Had a set of Michelin cross climate 3 years ago on my car,made my decision to by them after few reviews on TH-cam,well on my first ski trip to Kvitfjell began it to snow very heavily,and I was very surprised that my new tires have no grip in this condition,it felt like im driving on summer tires I could stop the car there was no grip, definitely would not recommend it for snow conditions

    Snow tires are a must if you actually have snow. I don't know what to say about the cheap tires. I always tend to buy used premium winter tires with a DOT no older than 1.5-2 years, keep them for 3 years and then discard. We get MAYBE 3 weeks of actual snow/year but the law mandates that anytime there is snow or ice on the road you must have winter tires equipped or face a hefty fine. Rest of winter is just cold asphalt, any winter tyre that is not too old and stiff will do just fine for dry braking in cold weather. Oh and I'd get a separate set of smaller rims for winter. The one time I did buy new winter ones (120euro a pop for 18inch) I hit a pothole covered with water like 2 weeks later and ruined 2 of them. I never run bigger than 16s (i dont have a suv). Cheaper rims are tires compared to 18s.

    What I get from all these tests is that, with cautious driving, completely unknown budget tyres can meet the needs of the everyday driver, especially when compared to one of the best brands out there.
    Yeah, sure, what if you need to brake urgently. I agree.
    But what if you drive on the best tyres and at the moment of emergency you are distracted on the stupid tablet screen adjusting the AC and you lose ONE second of braking? You'd have more or less the same result as the budget tyre.
    I'm saying it's all relative and the differences are pretty small now. Tell me I'm wrong.

    Since a few videos, I consider your videos to be the standard for tyre testing. I like the way you test and present the data now.
    I myself am very interested in same price point tyre comparison for example the best from Continental vs the best from Michelin vs the best from whatever others are good in the market like you did with the summer tyres like the PS4S etc.

      They'd be rubbish against winter tyres... 4 season tyres are much better than summer tyres on snow but specially made for winter tyres supremely trump Cross Climate tyres.... Get 4 cheap wheels are fit proper winter tyres - if you North of the Watford Gap..

      Rubbish is a poor choice of word, and you need to be way further north of Watford gap to justify full winters
      I’m in North Yorkshire and Michelin CC+ are more than adequate
      We’ve moved on a long way from owning 2 sets of wheels/tyres and having to swap them twice a year
      Last time I had any even remotely challenging snow conditions up here in Yorkshire was Christmas 2010, and I still managed with summer tyres - although now I have CC+ fitted there is no more ‘managing’ required

    Something I don't like about tyre tests is that most testers don't specify the budget tyre they're testing. As an experienced user of many tyre brands, I can tell you that not all budgets are the same, some are really good. Some premium tyres are also not that great. Try comparing some Dimax R8 with a Pirelli P7 Cinturato. I think you'll be surprised.

      The most significant thing I have noticed with winter tyres (being based in the South of England) is the ability to got through standing water without steering tug.
      Have fitted Winter tyres since 2010, and premium All Seasons on one vehicle.

      Nowadays I drive mostly in the cold Norway. So snow, ice and generally really crappy weather conditions tend to be the norm! With this said one surely don't need the best Winter tires. But trust me on this, you DO NEED Winter tires! When snow and ice is the daily routine.
      Considering the BEST Winter tires is definitely a good option! 99.9% of the times you wont need them. But on that occasional 0.01% it might save your, or someone else's, life! ;-)
      All seasons... I did learn to hate them, really quickly! ;-)

    In the end if you go to a tire shop for winter tires you take what’s in stock and if you have a trustworthy shop you usually can just ask for the cheapest option and still get a safe midrange tire. If they offer you some brand you never heard of you probably better find a different place.

    Seems like the budget tire is as good as an all weather tire. And as much as I like my Nokian WR-G4, it does lack in braking compared to a dedicated higher end winter tire. In fact, your review of the budget winter tire sounds like my WR-G4s right now as I just had to drive through slight snow but at 20F degrees (about -7C degrees), the roads are very slick. Still, a budget winter tire is better than an all season, especially for city driving. The higher end tires would be better if I lived out in the country side where it's just 1 lane and deep ditches on the side of the road.

    I picked up four brand new budget winter tires for my 2019 GMC Canyon pickup truck. It was $75 per tire for a Cooper Discoverer M+S winter tire vs nearly double (~$150) per tire for the Blizzak DMV-2, and 2.5 times more expensive (~$190) for the Nokian tires. I am hoping it does good enough and hopefully far outperforms the HT all-seasons, but realize it will not be as good as the Blizzaks I used to have on a Subaru.

      They will out perform your all seasons by a long shot on snow/slush/ice. Wet and especially dry will likely be worse but marginally compared to the gain in snow/slush/ice.

    when you mentioned slicks, when i had bridgestone potenzas on my car and when they were worn out they handled even better on dry tarmac (but wet was disaster )

    your videos are really interesting but i'm struggling a bit to validate the information for my personal driving style, because you said that you prefer tires to tend more towards under- than oversteer, while i certainly enjoy utilizing the rotation of the car more than reduced turning ability. if your guide is meant in an objective way you should make it clear why you'd prefer an understeery tire even if your driving style was more focussed on keeping a constant level of oversteer

    What would be useful to see is how a vehicle performs on budget winter tyres, compare to different types of summer tyres (premium, mid range and budget).
    This would give a good example of every day performances in the cold, wet, slippery and occasionally icy conditions found in winters in the UK.
    I can't help feeling that even a budget winter would be the superior tyre in those conditions, and perhaps silence some of those doubters who insist they don't need winter tyres.

    I appreciate how direct and informative this video was, however I would really like to have seen a blind experiment to see if the driver could really tell the difference between the two. As it is, this really comes off as a paid opinion from Nokian, especially with the handling test. With the tires being as close as they were on the stopping tests, I find it difficult to believe they were really 5 seconds apart in the handling game, and would much rather have the driver be blind to which tire they were using and just try to perform their best.

      What you might not be aware of is when temp gets below 7c winter tyres perform better than summer tyres , whether it's dry , wet ,snow or ice . Winter tyres perform better than any summer tyre once temp drops below 7c . That is pretty much 4- 6 months .

    One test I've always wanted to see is how studdable tires without studs do against a built from the ground up studless tire. Usually when they test studdable tires they test them with studs, but around here a lot of folks run them without studs. General Altimax is a popular one. Some folks say you may as well just leave your all seasons on if you don't stud studdable, others say they are just as good as blizzak. They are a fraction of the cost, so would love to see a test.

    For real comparison, you should have compared the premium Nokian to any budget model that use a same thread as the Nokian, there is tons of knockoff and they should compare more tightly to the original

      Same thread pattern could mean equal aqua planing and partially snow performance, but the compound and the construction still make a big difference in everything else. Also just because the threat pattern when new looks the same doesn't mean it stays that way. (depth of the sipes...or as some premium manufacturers are doing: 1 sipe over time of wear will open up into 2 sipes.)

    Yes cold , wet , snow and poor conditions is when you need good tyres. So what i do is get good winter tyres new in October,ish so new good winter tyres when you really need it run the same tyres through the year , so by summertime they are 3/4 used , ready for new winter tyres again. So my summertime tyres tyres not the very best but my bad weather tyres are ,so the difference is neutralised, and i never have the problem of putting on winter tyres already half used the next winter . So new winter tyres in October 24/7 .

      @@vothka205 The review is highly biased because there's no control compared to all-season tires. If your budget only allows cheap snow tires, they'll still beat the all-seasons by a mile.

      And do not forget the other catch of this video. A lighter car is ALWAYS more manageable than a much heavier counterpart! ;-)
      After all there's a reason why high performance goals. Can have many approaches but ALWAYS include light(er) weight! ;-)

      Been done on another channel. Spoiler alert! FWD w/snows did better than AWD w/ all-seasons. Made me pull the trigger on Michelin Latitude X-ICE XI2 for my AWD Equinox. Glad I did! We got a good snowfall and real cold temps the past 2 days and these tires are awesome on snow and ice! My sister-in-law's FWD PT Cruiser Convertible was lousy in the snow and ice last year. They put winter tires (can't recall the brand) on it by my suggestion and it performs 100% better in the snow and ice.

      and expencive tire is beter for 1% but expencive 50% or more. Also 99% of people are normal driver and not going to race or drift.

      @@balticaco No one chooses a budget tyre in a 50.000 € car. Budget tyres are often bought to older and second hand cars which makes the whole thing even worse safety wise!

      Mats Buhrman I just say if you work 1 hour you will be paid for ex 50$ and if you work 2 h = 100$. So if I buy michelin tire for 100$ I expect to be better 3 times then budget tire, so simple.

    I have 2017 225/40/R18 Pilot Alpin PA4 on my A3 2.0 TDI 184 HP (no Quattro).
    Two tyres are good, with about 7mm of thread, two are near that wear mark (4-5mm?).
    Am I alright with this set, with worn tyres in the back, or should I go for the new pair?
    Also, how important is thread depth in the rear of a FWD vehicle?

      How important are the rear tires on a vehicle? Is a question easily answered by most tires manufacturers (Michelin, Continental...) by simply saying.
      IF you only get two new tires (one axle) assemble the new ones on the BACK!
      It's that simple, although so many still don't grasp this concept! ;-)
      With a car like that quite honestly, I struggle to understand. Why not put a new set AND rotate them accordingly. So you get the most out of them.

    Just got some nokian hakkappelitta 9 SUV tires for my canadian outlander AWC 2.4L
    Last winter was particularly icy and although the truck had no problem getting going the anti-locking brakes were constantly activating and my braking distance was a bit worrying... that's why the studs. ( also a feet of snow in my driveway and road is normal when i got out early and it's been snowing all night)

      After having some studded hankook tyres on my hot hatch I hot in the snow it'll just plow ahead where most people get stuck already :) and they don't wear as fast (my hankooks are still chewing snow after 7 winters

    I would love, if you could do some testing and comparation of summer tyres and winter tyres at -20 °C, -10 °C, 0 °C and 5 °C on dry asphalt. I understand that winter conditions are unpredictable and that using summer tyres in winter is not a good idea overall, but some cars are used in special cycle, when you can use them only when you decide, so it would still be interesting.

      Actually, my sis because she travels a lot in Sierra Nevada, south of Lake Tahoe very seriously considers getting set of 'winters' after she almost scrapped her Tacoma last winter. I think set Nokias should set her up.

      Yes, Blizzaks are very good winter tires. We installed quite a few of them, I work with my friend in a small garage, Ottawa, Ontario. He run them on his 2007 Dodge Ram Diesel and he likes them a lot. Very good on ice, but the softer compound will wear much faster than say Nordic type all-weather tires that might be the answer to warmer weather around Lake Tahoe - WRG4 from Nokia comes to my mind.

    Drove some Ceat Arctic 25 years ago, wow they were really bad in the dry but they saved my one time on ice because they were so soft!

      My daily driver is a Peugeot 107. The 106 has also been in the stable, as many other Peugeot /Citroen... and other brands.
      Both are undeniable capable machines! Among other things weight is a major factor. Even with my skinny 155 R14 tires I can hit curves and roundabouts. At speeds that most more modern SUV and the likes of it, can't even start dreaming of! Reason being basically HALF the weight.
      A modern SUV tip the scale between 1600kg to 2000kg! While my tiny car is still in the 800kg range!
      Physic laws do apply without questions. ;-)

    I think that there is another aspect to test.. How temperature effects the cheap with expensive winter tire.
    I have noticed that my cheaper chinese branded Saliun tire performs very poorly with braking on ice and snow when the temperature gets below -20C. However, with my Nokian Hakka R3 tires, cold temperatures below -20C do not seem to effect performance on ice and snow.

    If more people would take your advice we would be much safer out on the roads. Also, I reckon insurance companies should insist drivers fit decent tyres to their vehicles. It would cost them less in claims. God knows how many people would be alive today if they or the person that hit them had been running on good rubber.

      I like the German approach. You don't HAVE to fit winter tyres, but if it snows and you want to drive, you need that winter tyre or you have to leave the car at home.

    I've just put on Bridgestone Weather Control A005, for UK driving. A good all rounder I think - especially in the south of England. Of course of we get any snow i'll be one of the few able to stop in a reasonable distance....

    Excellent test! A nordic studless tyre would be better than both of them on ice though, right?
    Also a follow up question on the video about winter tyre sizes. If you're stuck with 18" wheels (8J x 18), and the standard size for your car is 245/45 R18, would it be beneficial to go with 225/50 R18 instead? The height of the sidewall would be essentially the same, but you'd get a 2 cm narrower width.

    Isn't this test sort of pointless without the context of a "control" test using every day all seasons? The couple of meters difference between the budget and premium tires might not mean anything if they are say 30 meters short of all-seasons overall? People might want to save a lot of money at the expense of a little extra distance if its already much much better then all-seasons.

      Exactly I have a set of all-seasons and a set of cheap snow tires. And the stopping distance on snow/slush/ice is easily cut by 50%. From what I can understand though is that all-season in America/Canada is very different than all-season in Europe.

    Directional vs Non-directional snow tire test would be very interesting. I like to do a full tire rotation on my vehicles so I tend to stay away from directional tires.

      You can simply exchange tires between front or back axle. It will keep the tire wear even. If anything to be concerned, make sure suspension components are in tip top condition, same for the wheel alignment. That's a point I never neglect and I do assemble my own tires! ;-)

      @@crpth1 But if you have an open differential the one tire will most likely wear faster from losing traction and will never be swapped over to the other side to balance out the wear.
