Actually to tell you the truth, this is from monty python's holy grail; when sir lancelot comes down from the tower and the quests see him.
Such an underrated event. Everyone talks about the crossing of the Alps and the battle of Cannae but to me , this was Hannibal masterpiece.
I Don't Think trasimene is as a big Victory compared to cannea but it is surely Hannibal at his Best it is surely a Tactical feat on it,s own , The fact that up till this day Trisemene Remains the biggest Perfect Ambush in history is truly Amazing and it tells you something about Hannibal
Completely agree. I pefer Alexander's Balkan campaign to anything he did in Asia. And I think Caesar's victories in North Africa and Spain were more impressive than against Pompey or Vercingetorix. Though Alesia much like Cannae and Gaugamela are timeless victories.

I have always had a great fascination with Hannibal and scipio. The 2nd punic war has everything you would expect in a great fantasy novel blood oaths of Revenge , glorious victories, herioc last stands Two of the greatest generals in History going head to head and You guys are doing an excellent job covering this war.
Indeed. I'm quite a Hannibal fan boy, and the 2nd Punic War is definitely a remarkable tale. I try to mostly follow Hannibal's story but the war itself was actually far more complex.
In ancient history, maybe that is even debatable as people like alexander existed.
Hannibal and Scipio were top tier generals, better by leagues by many of their contemporaries, but even they were not the best or honestly within the top 10 of all time.

@Obi-wan Kenobi Actually the Battle of Gaixia (202 B.C.E) was a larger ambush with 600,000-700,000 Han forces trapping 100,000 Chu forces. Gaixia was not nearly as surprising as Trasimene because the Chu forces knew they were walking into a trap, but did so because their commander's beloved concubine had been captured and was being used as bait (this was the inspiration for the famous Chinese opera whose title is often translated into English as "Farewell my Concubine"). However, the Chu forces lost 80,000 men, so it was a much deadlier ambush than Lake Trasimene. Basically an ambush with loss of life approaching the level of Cannae.
Imagine being so badass that a feat of military greatness you pulled off is still unmatched. If only Hannibal knew how cemented in history his name would be.

There should be at least one episode before Cannae to cover some of the events and to cover some events surrounding Hannibal.

The description as the Roman army makes its way along the shores of the lake in the mist was chilling and it must have been a terrifying experience when Hannibals army descended upon the Romans! The taste of revenge must also have been very sweet for the Gauls, finally taking down the man that had caused them so much grief in the past. This attention to detail adds so much to these battles its a treat to watch!

Hannibal Barca gotta be amongst the top 5 most skilled commanders in history. Never lost a single battle on Italian soil.
But did on his homeland
Hannibal was a master of battlefield tactics but he was not a master of overall strategy. He didn't realize how quickly Rome would be able to replace their destroyed armies... and he had no plan to force the Romans to capitulate by laying siege to Rome itself.

Well factor in that the senate in Carthage had stopped sending money and reinforcements. If they had not done that things might have turned out differently.
@@ari3903 He refused to fight there because he lost his Numidian cavalry to the Romans and the Romans chose the battlefield which was vast flat terrain, perfect for Roman legionaries and yet he still was forced into the battle by the Carthaginian Senate while he wanted to bide his time as he knew defeat was almost imminent.
Also he didn't lay siege to Rome because he probably lacked equipment to breach the Roman walls.

There are some things that you do that really makes me wonder about your methods, especially the way you fit the size of one map with the other more detailed map without losing too much quality. Unbelievably great narrative style as always. Knows when to switch from Hannibals PoV (when explaining his decision and his march across the swamps) to the Roman PoV (when describing the scene of battle from Roman eyes to explain why they couldn't anticipate an ambush and how it may have felt for a Roman soldier) and then back to Hannibal (when describing how he set up his ambush).
This, alongside the animation and sound combines to make a perfectly epic video.

I’ve been to the trasimene battlefield and drove around and visited all the key markers on the battlefield.
Trust me when I say, this video is flawed about where the ambush took place.
It happened further up the valley, sooner, further to the west, in the same spot where this video shows the Roman camp.
The Roman camp was actually on the plain, outside the pass.
Its a miracle what romans went through during this war and still survived. I have heard their famous quote "You are not defeated until you accept defeat". Very inspiring.
same with the first war, they didn't lose land battles for the most part but lost hundreds of thousands in storms at sea.
Almost any other group would capitulate after losing so many men, but the trucked on.
This sometimes backfires though, the paraguayans tried to keep fighting a tough war but ended up losing around 70% of their entire population!
another great battle showing hannibal at his best. Skills such as ambush were very common in spain where the terrain was favorable to such forms of combat and i am sure Hannibal learnt the skill well...add in a dose of political commanders for Rome, where each was jealous of gaining glory for themselfs over there own fellow consuls , and you have a receipt ripe for victory. Here we see another firm victory , and imagine the state of Rome , where Hannibal has defeated every roman army thrown at him ...destroying them at a river crossing , and uniting the gauls against them , and now with the indignity of a army group being destroyed in ambush on the march....what will Rome do,? what can they do ? Rome's strength was in its population , and forming army after army...which could defeat any tribal culture , for if you lost a battle , you would not regain the manpower to form another army [or navy] and so you would lose. But what do you do against a general so capable, that he does'nt seem to lose ? :P great video , keep up the series , please :D
then the carthaginian nobles stopped supporting Hannibal and everything went wrong slowly after that

As a junior officer, I had to practice platoon ambushes. These are difficult with about 30 men to sort out for the ambushing group! That Hannibal achieved the feat of placing an ambush of 50,000 men, speaking many different languages, and synchronise the attack must rate as one of the greatest military victories of all time. Cannae was a masterpiece, and even Zama was far closer than it seemed. Only Hannibal’s hesitation while Scipio reorganised his army prevented another victory against the odds. I have the greatest respect for Hannibal as a tactician, but as one of his lieutenants said “Hannibal, you know how to win victories, but not how to use them”!
This man was a phenom and an enigma. What brilliance.
I’ve been to the very spot at lake Trasimene, where this huge ambush occurred.
However, the historical signs and markers place the ambush as beginning to the west of Pasignano, where as this video shows it all occurring to the east of it.

Beyond the fact that Hannibal defeated roman armies which were without any doubt much superior to persian troops, and that he didn't have the full power unlike Alexander to direct the war effort on Rome as he wanted. Alexander's armies mutilated despite that its core was constituted of fellow macedonians, when Hannibal was able to maintain an heteroclyte army constituted of many different tribes and cultures
Very interesting informations. Famous Berber kings like Massinissa fought also in the Punic wars. The Roman Empire has its footsteps all over the world

The fact that Hannibal Barca lost the Second Punic War make his life sound like a legend, he was no king but only a general growing in a time when there was great tension in the Western Mediterranean Basin. What I like is that the Man literally hates Rome ever since he was young. In the Second Punic War, Hannibal Barca did some of the greatest achievements in not just the Mediterranean antiquity, but in Military history as well. His crossing of the Alps is one of the most celebrated achievements of any Military force in ancient warfare, his victories at Trebia, Lake Trasimene (Largest ambush in Military history), and Cannae his greatest victory that's now considered to be one of the greatest strategic victories that has since have a mythic quality,. Hannibal achieved great victories however, Carthage didn't support that much to the point where he couldn't lay siege to Rome, and this would cost him dearly, and in the end, Rome would win the Second Punic War and the complete dominance of the Western Mediterranean Basin. Yet, he's still regarded as one of the greatest Military commanders and Strategists, he inspired many Commanders like Napoleon Bonaparte who regarded him as the greatest Strategist of all time, Hannibal may have lost his own War but he left his mark on it.
We stayed in Cortona 2 years ago, from CA. We rode Vespas around that area and could see the diagrams of where the ambush happened and the subsequent battle. There is a town there called ODESSA- which means bones (I didn’t know that) and the locals would find human bones from the battle long after.
Thank you for doing this- it really helped connect all the dots. You would never have guessed a major battle was ever fought there....

The ambush has never been recreated on this scale ever and not for lack of trying
Agreed. I just didn't want to mention it as the one and only ambush of that size in history mainly because it's not fully known how many Roman troops were killed or captured during the battle. Some analysis suggest that as many as 10,000 Roman troops made it back to Rome. I personally think this number was far lower, but we may get better evidence over time, just like the Alps crossing.
