@ Pyrphoros Today the Dutch and the Danish are B.F.F. :-), but Denmark then wasn't that nice and 'hygge' country known (and loved :-) today. It was rather an expansionist super-power, controlling the whole baltic region...! (more like Russia in the cold-war-era...!)

But this battle shows why knights were fazed from battlefields, and only kept in some "upgraded forms" like Ottoman Sipahi or Polish- Lithuanian Hussars- they were too immobile, and unable to fight in specyfic situation, while their pesant militia counter part was vastly cheaper to maintain. But we have to remeber- knights fought on both sides of this conflict...
@ There were men at arms, who "were armored like a knight"- and by thst time Western Europe lost their lance wielding skill- one of my kinsmen(circa 1510) was watching Spaniards at Tournamet and he noticed that 2 "knights" passed each other 12 times without breaking their lances. It was observed all over Wester Europe, that lance was no longer deciding factor in combat... Only musket or pistols Though I always wanted to know where they managed to find 2000 knights... If i remember correctly even Teutonic Order had about 500 Knights at best... And they were "Knightly Order"...
iam from dithmarschen and i have to say u did a great job. also in germany this incredible battle is mostly unknown, but we dithmarschens are proud of this battle, free farmers fought for there freedom against superior knights and won. After the battle they only burried the poor foodmen, not the knights. The sentence "Look out Guard! Here come the peasants!" in origin" Ward de Gard de Bur de kümmt!"
What is so ingenious avout Wulf Isebrand’s plan is that normally when you ambush somebody you pick a chokepoint, hide your forces there and trick the enemy into thinking it is safe to pass there. So the attack is the surprise, Wulf Isebrand turned that around. He used his meager forces as bait and hid the choakpoint using flooding which not only hid the drainage ditches but also quickly turned the land into what it originally was, a bog. On top of that he carefully engineered a crowd disaster. I’ve seen a partial casualty lists of Danish/German deaths from Hemmingsted (nobles only, of course). All the men from whole families were killed there, knights and nobles with all of their sons. To add insult to injury the Dittmarshians buried the common soldiers after the battle but left the bodies of nobles to be eaten by wild animals.
Baltic Hammer It was just a partial list of names of Danish and German aristocrats killed at Hemmingstedt, no details of where they came from. It was sent to the bishop of Bremen in the hope he could get the Ditmarshians to hand the remains over for burial. There was hardly a noble family in Denmark or N-Germany who did not lose a relative at Hemmingstedt.
HistoryMarche I’d take that with a grain of salt. It is one of those things that is often said but I’m not certain if it actually happened. That being said, I did read it on an info tablet at the official memorial to the battle at Hemmingstedt so there is probably some truth to this story. It also sounds right since nobles from surrounding areas had been trying to subjugate the Ditmarshians on and off for centuries and the nobles were pretty brutal about it. There was not a spark of love lost there. The memorial is worth visiting. The Ditmarshians are still very proud of this victory (and so they should be). They have built a massive diorama showing the battle in a display case with literally hundreds of tin soldiers on a terrain model of the battlefield complete with houses. It's a bit hard to find though. I'm glad you found the time to cover Hemmingstedt, IMHO it is one of the most ingeniously planned ambushes of the entire Middle Ages. Like Gallipoli and the battles in the Karelian Isthmus during the Winter War, Hemmingstedt is a classic example of how to use terrain as a weapon.
I think I've seen parts of that battle display in pictures, it looked awesome! There is a chance I will visit my brother in Sweden so I might take a detour to see the memorial, it would definitely be worth the trip.

Clearly Wulf Isebrand was one of those very talented field commanders who unfortunately has, for a long time, been not as well-mentioned as they should have been. It is clear from this video that Isebrand used an effective strategy that denied the Danes their numerical superiority while giving him a stronger front.
He also acted decisively rushing to fortify and defend the only spot where they could stand a chance. Timely action and applied mastering of command is what makes a great general from a (only) good strategist.
The guy had natural talent, and we don't know much about him. Perhaps he served as a mercenary in his native land, before settling down? There was clearly a reason that he was chosen to lead the militia.
It’s too bad this was the only time he lead an army. I’m guessing he was a minor noble who had served as a junior officer in some war or wars before leaving, which is he knew how to prepare and command. More importantly, he knew the deceptively complicated landscape intimately and was able to use that to create a position, which would have never been attacked if the Danish thought they would really stand and fight.
That would br Sun Tzu's response to most of Danish millitary history, our kings and generals allways found new and inventive ways of turning victories into defeats.

My ancestors come from Dithmarschen and my grandma often told me the story. And she told me that there were many small ditches under water. You must not forget that Dithmarschen is situated directly at the North Sea. So when they opened the flood gates several big and much more small diches were flooded. And that´s where the heavy armour of the Danish knights were fatal. It made them so heavy that they couldn´t get out of the ditches and drowned whereas the men of Dithmarschen used their long sticks to jump over the ditches. And by the way - I know from experience that the folks from Dithmarschen are extremely stubborn by nature. No wonder they even fought the Danish army.
As a local I can say you are god damn right, in Heide, it is still celebrated every two years, as part of the festival we call “Marktfrieden” or market peace. We celebrate how the city was founded as a gathering place for merchants and remember our medieval heritage. They also show the same theater piece, every time, it is a dramatization of the events that lead up to the battle up to the victory. And we never talk about 1559.

Have you heard of the campaigns' of Napoleon and Hitler into Russia? They are very famous examples of not fighting in winter. Of course the cause behind losing wasn't only due to the bitter Russian winter, I don't know about Hitler but Napoleon wasn't stupid or ghastly ignorant, why his campaign failed had a lot more to it than the Russian winter. But still these are two very famous examples.
It depends mate on the area you live in.And the harshness of the winters. Epaminontas of Thebes marched in winter (armies never marched on winter in that era in Greece)and totally surprised the Spartans crushed them and freed Helot cities all over the Peloponnese. He put the final nail in the coffin in their military supremacy in the region. The details during the battle are incredible it makes it so much more interesting. It's as if you were actually there and had written down the details which maneuvers were taken and how. So much better than blocks just crashing into each other and instantly disintegrating (you might know which channel I refer to). Once again excellent video I started to miss you haha. It is still used in parts of northern germany. Mostly in frisian areas and more in some kind of lowland games. The danish black guard should have known it too. they were mercenaries from netherlands and frisian areas like Groningen.
I religiously follow all the channels which cover battles of history, and though I usually never comment on them, I felt the need to make an exception in this case, as this has been my favorite animation style out of all of the channels of this genre. Fantastic work!

The nice thing is - that land looked like one would just manage to run through there - it was a treacherous swampy-icey landscape with, at the horizon, hints of a hills and a forest in sight. If in a rout, it would not seem like there was no escape to a panicked mind if in fact, there was none.
That was great. :) I am actually more intrigued about the history and motivation behind Dithmarsians though. How did they resist the might of entire countries for so long and why did they persist in such overwhelming odds? Sounds like a fascinating culture/society in history. Thanks for the hard work.

Ya know what? I'm not even mad that the Danes lost this one, even though I am one. The Dithmarsians fought incredibly well here, choosing a battleground that fit them perfectly, neutralizing the Danes' numerical superiority, holding their defensive line without wavering, and carrying out well timed and well placed counter-attacks.

Sad reality about prisoners is that, during the course of "normal" warfare of the medieval period, only nobles were taken prisoner and the common peasant or mercenary soldier could expect to be executed if captured. So when peasant uprisings and resistance happened, they tended to defy convention and execute the nobles too, because they knew the same would happen to them.

Wow, the militiamen commander was a genius.The flooding, the amazing courage of the peasants that managed to hold their grounds when fighing against better equipped and trained soldiers without having casualties, and the way of not recklessly surrounding the enemy. All those totally remind me lelouch's strategic genius from code geass
I've read that in most cases battles are not won by killing all enemy, but around 25% often proves to be the breaking point that starts a rout, which cascades into mass slaughter and last stands. This is especially true in battles with low visibility and communication, and to armies with less discipline and have not been trained to rally. Armies like the Romans learned to leave their best troops in reserve and expect the less experienced troops to fall back once they wear down the enemy, while medieval french and german armies often charged headon with their nobleman leaders taking the lead, once they die, the battle falls apart.
Like the Spartans at Leuctra, the destruction of the most elite unit usually results in other troops routing. Hannibal however subverted the Roman tactic of three lines three times, always using flanking and pincers to force the Triarii elite to fight. No small wonder he won Trebia, Tresamine and Cannae. Like Alexander and Epaminondas Hannibal went for the throat.
Isebrand going back to obscurity reminds me of a Roman general who just wanted to go back to his farm. I find men like these who fight for duty and to protect their land and people greater and more honourable than men who fight for power, glory or pillaging, even if said men were genius generals.

This battle reminds me of a more famous 'peasant' country resisting subjugating from a far more powerful feudal kingdom in Morgarten. In that battle the Swiss Confederacy also managed to beat back the might of the Hapsburgs. I didn't realize there was another autonomous region bordering the Holy Roman Empire who's denizens also fought as mercenaries. I wonder if the Dithmarsians and Swiss ever opened up diplomatic relations because they are very similar in a lot of ways.
I've been slowly watching all of the battles on your channel, and I love them. But I don't understand how any story about any battle could possibly top this one. It's such an entertaining story.
Those are some awesome battle cries, but I still think the Finnish cry of: "Tulta munille!" or "Shoot them in the Balls" is better. Also, what happened to King Johan after the battle? I imagine many were not happy to hear that their king got his butt handed to him by some peasants that he outnumbered 15-1.

This is a very nice video. As a local (born in Heide and grew up in nearby Tellingstedt, see 4:50 in the upper rigth corner), I can say, that even today the Dithmarsians are proud to won this battle. The Black Guard opened the fight with the words "Waar di buer, de gaar de kümmt!" This is in the local dialect and means : defense yourself (Waar di), the guard is coming. but the peasants just twisted the words and answered "Waar di gaar, de buer de kümmt (Buer is the dialect word for peasant). When I was a boy, my father took me tho the memorial and showed me the place. And there is even an entry in WIKI. Greets to all.. :-)
Led his people to triumph in a battle where they were outnumbered 12 to 1, captured his enemy's national standard, and became a father, all at once. If you could only be remembered by history for one day in your life, Wulf Isebrand certainly managed to pick a good one.

Wow, now I understand what took you so much time of no doing videos, THIS ANIMATION IS AWESOME!! everything is better, now we can clearly see terrain and units are better, too. However, the troops look kinda like flags, is this on purpose? I think that it would be better if they were more like LEGO bricks at the start, and when they are being defeated and start routing, they turn more into the troops in this animation, like flags, as if they had lost their organization and strength. Also, it’s nice to see a non-medieval battle

Also looking forward to the next one maybe even cunning battles such as some that were exemplified in The art of war by Sun Tzu, and not just cunning tactics aswell as costs. Although i can't complain, i enjoy these just as much.

Have you heard of the campaigns' of Napoleon and Hitler into Russia? They are very famous examples of not fighting in winter.
Of course the cause behind losing wasn't only due to the bitter Russian winter, I don't know about Hitler but Napoleon wasn't stupid or ghastly ignorant, why his campaign failed had a lot more to it than the Russian winter. But still these are two very famous examples.
It depends mate on the area you live in.And the harshness of the winters. Epaminontas of Thebes marched in winter (armies never marched on winter in that era in Greece)and totally surprised the Spartans crushed them and freed Helot cities all over the Peloponnese. He put the final nail in the coffin in their military supremacy in the region. The details during the battle are incredible it makes it so much more interesting. It's as if you were actually there and had written down the details which maneuvers were taken and how. So much better than blocks just crashing into each other and instantly disintegrating (you might know which channel I refer to). Once again excellent video I started to miss you haha. That is how they would move around daily. Swamp farming is an art.
It is still used in parts of northern germany. Mostly in frisian areas and more in some kind of lowland games. The danish black guard should have known it too. they were mercenaries from netherlands and frisian areas like Groningen.

What happened in Meldorf must've been a motivator to fight to the last man.
Taking no prisoners can be a great tactic to intimidate the enemy but if the enemy can't or won't run away well it just makes them fight harder
The nice thing is - that land looked like one would just manage to run through there - it was a treacherous swampy-icey landscape with, at the horizon, hints of a hills and a forest in sight. If in a rout, it would not seem like there was no escape to a panicked mind if in fact, there was none.
That was great. :) I am actually more intrigued about the history and motivation behind Dithmarsians though. How did they resist the might of entire countries for so long and why did they persist in such overwhelming odds? Sounds like a fascinating culture/society in history. Thanks for the hard work.

The Dithmarsians fought incredibly well here, choosing a battleground that fit them perfectly, neutralizing the Danes' numerical superiority, holding their defensive line without wavering, and carrying out well timed and well placed counter-attacks.

Sad reality about prisoners is that, during the course of "normal" warfare of the medieval period, only nobles were taken prisoner and the common peasant or mercenary soldier could expect to be executed if captured. So when peasant uprisings and resistance happened, they tended to defy convention and execute the nobles too, because they knew the same would happen to them.

Wow, the militiamen commander was a genius.The flooding, the amazing courage of the peasants that managed to hold their grounds when fighing against better equipped and trained soldiers without having casualties, and the way of not recklessly surrounding the enemy.
All those totally remind me lelouch's strategic genius from code geass
It is the rare and one of the best examples of how the relief is used as a strategic tool in the battle!
I've read that in most cases battles are not won by killing all enemy, but around 25% often proves to be the breaking point that starts a rout, which cascades into mass slaughter and last stands. This is especially true in battles with low visibility and communication, and to armies with less discipline and have not been trained to rally. Armies like the Romans learned to leave their best troops in reserve and expect the less experienced troops to fall back once they wear down the enemy, while medieval french and german armies often charged headon with their nobleman leaders taking the lead, once they die, the battle falls apart.
Like the Spartans at Leuctra, the destruction of the most elite unit usually results in other troops routing.
Hannibal however subverted the Roman tactic of three lines three times, always using flanking and pincers to force the Triarii elite to fight. No small wonder he won Trebia, Tresamine and Cannae. Like Alexander and Epaminondas Hannibal went for the throat.

This battle reminds me of a more famous 'peasant' country resisting subjugating from a far more powerful feudal kingdom in Morgarten. In that battle the Swiss Confederacy also managed to beat back the might of the Hapsburgs. I didn't realize there was another autonomous region bordering the Holy Roman Empire who's denizens also fought as mercenaries. I wonder if the Dithmarsians and Swiss ever opened up diplomatic relations because they are very similar in a lot of ways.

I've been slowly watching all of the battles on your channel, and I love them. But I don't understand how any story about any battle could possibly top this one. It's such an entertaining story.
Those are some awesome battle cries, but I still think the Finnish cry of: "Tulta munille!" or "Shoot them in the Balls" is better.
Also, what happened to King Johan after the battle? I imagine many were not happy to hear that their king got his butt handed to him by some peasants that he outnumbered 15-1.

This is a very nice video. As a local (born in Heide and grew up in nearby Tellingstedt, see 4:50 in the upper rigth corner), I can say, that even today the Dithmarsians are proud to won this battle. The Black Guard opened the fight with the words "Waar di buer, de gaar de kümmt!" This is in the local dialect and means : defense yourself (Waar di), the guard is coming. but the peasants just twisted the words and answered "Waar di gaar, de buer de kümmt (Buer is the dialect word for peasant). When I was a boy, my father took me tho the memorial and showed me the place. And there is even an entry in WIKI.

Wow, now I understand what took you so much time of no doing videos, THIS ANIMATION IS AWESOME!! everything is better, now we can clearly see terrain and units are better, too.
However, the troops look kinda like flags, is this on purpose? I think that it would be better if they were more like LEGO bricks at the start, and when they are being defeated and start routing, they turn more into the troops in this animation, like flags, as if they had lost their organization and strength. Also, it’s nice to see a non-medieval battle
