As a big fan of Coup as it is, I will probably get this as well. Bringing the original Coup with me when I know there may be people interested in testing it. And bringing this when hanging out with gamers and other Coup fans. ^^

+Nurgleprobe He is dead on. My group played this for 4 hours and we are obsessed with Coup. I have the kickstarter edition and we have been having a damn blast. BGB is spot on with his review. Get it if you love Coup.. you'll have a blast.

I forget the exact roles, but in rule book provided, it tells you which roles to pick to have the original 5 roles from Coup (one of them is the Banker you showed in your video)

I'm a little late to the party but I have some opinions about this.
    1. I agree with your premise. The spirit of Coup being a game you can take anywhere and play several games without hassle. They did sacrifice that.
    2. I also agree that, for the most part, you don't get enough for that sacrifice. However, that's coming from me, a pretty casual Coup player. I like Coup and will gladly play it but don't love it anymore. I may sell my copy on the cheap to a fan of the game.
All that being said, I think this is the ultimate "Coup lovers' Game" and I disagree with a few things.
    1. It's not a hassle to set up. You simply keep the role cards separated in the box and pick one from each stack. Net game you pick a new 5 and can choose to reshuffle or not. It's actually very fast. I'd say it adds an entire 15-60 seconds to each game.
    2. The new cards to learn is a Pro in my book instead of a Con. You're correct that newcomers to a card will have to learn the new card. But that's the point; it's like having fresh eyes on the original Coup all over again. This is here to add replayability to Coup.
    3. Finally I don't lament the loss of the private cheat sheet. Yes you have to be craftier about the way you remind yourself of the powers. However the effort required is very minor; simply study the 3-4 cards you don't have in your hand when it's not your turn. Seeing the actual pictures of the characters next to their rule also makes an easier connection to the power. The original cheat sheets were simply lines of text, so this new method is really like one step back and one step forward IMO. I think that's fair considering the change was necessary to enact the new game mechanics.

I love coup, but they screwed the pooch on this. The effects are much longer, which goes against the design of being easy to remember so you can bluff the cards even when you don't have them. A lot of the roles are rehashes from classic coup (e.g. Banker = Duke without blocking foreign aid). I think the diagnosis in the video is correct. They should have kept all the original roles and just added a few more. The General is a good example, and whatever card can block an actual coup. Even then, the original coup is just much better balanced. It is pretty much the standard for a micro-game IMHO. Perfectly balanced, well-designed, fun, and fast.

I think the reason behind not bringing the original coup is that those cards are specifically interdependent (ie: Captain and Ambassador or Assassin vs Contessa). I think the idea of this version is to change the theme of the game each play session. I don't think you need to randomize before every single game. The box is humongous lol. I ended up putting the original coup in here.

Thanks for the review. I was looking at getting this but the review backs up my concerns. Coup is fun as it's easy to teach, quick to learn and play and small enough to fit in your jacket pocket. This new version seems to lose most of those benefits. It's a bluffing game and it's hard to bluff when there are so many characters abilities to learn. That stacks the odds against new players and makes it less of a party game than the original. Saying that, once learned it looks like it would be a better game with more variety, tactics and options giving the game much more playability.

Yeah, this seems the version to go with for established coup lovers, but I won't be bringing this one out for most guests.

Your opinion was pretty on the money about that. I thought the game was going to maybe add 1 more role and instead add a lot of extra things you could do with coup or income. But instead its just more convoluted role cards.

I'll probably win up getting this but it's only because I like bluffing games. My original copy is actually great because it's portable and easy to carry. It's also simple enough to play with non gamers and not crazy complex. Most everybody I play with knows what all the roles do and there's no reason to confuse them with more. I have both the promo roles besides the Jester but it's fine because it's yet another roles that replaces the Ambassador and I really don't need another one of those.

as the original roles interact directly with eachother, they would only work together when you have them together. these are not directly interacting with eachother

I know all cards but yeah I need something like sushi go party where it show u best deck for situation , like new learner and for bombing money , something like that . after like week of shuffling cards I feel bit overwhelmed . I feel like there should be only two decks with one card that change in each deck so . 12 roles only in the game .

  • @InteractionImplants

Are your cards foil? The characters and their backgrounds on the role cards look much more holographic than mine.

I would say that Coup Rebelion is more gamer version of Coup. And to be honest, I LOVE this version. Every play is new experiance. Also, you don't have to take new roles every single game. I suggest to choose roles and play with them at least 2-3 times before changing them. After a while you will know which roles play well with what and you will be able to 'preconstruct' roles.

Exactly, there's nothing stopping you from house ruling the deck combinations instead of making it random each time.

What does he mean when he said i cant get the original the resistance coup anymore?

    • @zerwif
      @zerwif 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Coup Resistance is an updated version of Coup City State, which has an Elizabethan theme. City State is often called "original Coup" and is out of print.

This is so bad. The original was amazing, and this one falls very flat.
