    Okay, let's unravel this. This song has some allusions to film and literature that I don't know where to start. Probably I haven't discovered everything by far myself.
    So from the beginning: winds will be named is an allusion to Patrick Rothfuss' book The name of the wind. Which Toumas has read. The Kingslayer trilogy.
    Afterwards: to fallen stars, to there and back might be a reference to J.R.R. Tolkiens Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit. Bilbo writes a book with the title There and back again.
    Tír na nÓg (ancient Irish: Tír na n-Oc - tʲiːɾˠ n̪ˠə ˈn̪ˠoːɡˠ freely translated about Land of Eternal Youth) is one of the most famous mystical places of the Otherworld in Irish-Celtic mythology.
    A pale blue theatre stage: our earth
    I ask for additions. I would like to know what I have not found.

    • @anssia3123
      @anssia3123 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I'd be willing to bet money that "to fallen stars" is a reference to Stardust by Neil Gaiman. Tuomas (and Floor and Marko) are fans of Gaiman.

      I went over it again: something wicked this way comes is a quote from the first scene of the fourth act of the drama "Macbeth" by William Shakespeare.
      The Sea Lady - Saga of King Arthur. (?)
      Allusions to the Brothers Grimm: Snow, Glass, Apples - Snow White
      The title of the song itself: In ancient Greek religion and mythology, Pan is the god of the wild, shepherds and flocks, nature of mountain wilds, rustic music and impromptus.
      Maybe the line an ape in awe before a door is an allusion to Arthur C. Clark's 2001 Space Odyssey when the Great Monolith appears But I am not sure about that.
      Come on guys, there's probably more! This song is pure Genius....as always.
      By the way: great reaction! :)

    Oh, fun fact.
    Album release was April 10. However, in the heat of the pandemic, the roads were emptier than usual, so people in Finland (myself included) got the physical preordered albums up to 2 days ahead of the schedule. I think Kai (the drummer) jokingly said something along the lines that this is the first time in the history of Finnish mail that they have delivered early.

  • @vedranb87
    @vedranb87 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    Let me quote something here.
    Remember "The Greatest Show on Earth"?
    There is an instrumental release of that, at the end of which Tuomas had Richard Dawkins read this: “It never seems to occur to people that a man might just want to write a piece of music”, which is a homage to Ralph Vaughan Williams. So... Don't destroy yourself overanalysing. It's true that Tuomas is extremely complex in his thoughts and has a lot of things to say, and although the album is stylistically and thematically very well connected, each song is an individual piece of music (except for the second part of the album which is one piece split in multiple parts) and should be viewed separately (from what I gathered from multiple statements from various band members; Tuomas, Marko and Floor in particular).
    Also, lyric videos were made by a different studio from the team that worked on Noise music video, so I wouldn't try to look into hidden clues between the two. Noise music video was under the direction of the same person (Stobe Harju) who made the Islander music video and the full feature film of Nightwish music revolving around the Imaginaerum album (under the same name).
    That being said, I think that in the lyrics of Music, there might be a title reference to two songs of this album: "Can you hear the brave drum from the MOORS? Follow the beat and leave the NOISE behind if we be lovers". One of the "songs" of the second part of the album is called "Moors", and we already left the "Noise" behind, or did we?
    Anyway, keep up the excellent work and keep bringing up these interesting analyses and parallels. Just because I say there may not be intentional parallels, doesn't mean you won't find some based on your own intuition and experience. Each of us has a different life and set of references, just like the songs on the album, but some of us interact in beautiful ways and from time to time, we create new life, why wouldn't the songs?

      There are more connections in music. If we be lovers probably refers to second part of the How's the heart. Pan is also openly referenced. One commenter pointed out Harvest is one of the very few songs to have major scale. Music coming to your way, the very first song is clear reference to itself. I am certain Music contains references to all songs, it is only a matter of time we find the others. This leaves Shoemaker, Tribal and Endlessness in first disk.

    • @vedranb87
      @vedranb87 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CemKalyoncu Right. Those two were just at the top of my head while I was writing.
      "Music" is such a good first song. It showcases everything. Evolution of music, of voice, of intertextuality.
      And the "time and silence" bit is just... music.

    All through Tuomas's work there is mention of a writer, a poet, a creator of the imagination. Someone who was given the first spark of the story. There is always a storyteller. There is always mention of cliffs, blue water, oceans, the sea. Mermaids. Angels. Ghosts. We were here. The child. THIS album began in EFMB.

    this is a song about human imagination therefore a ton of literary references like the Labyrinth ( Pan's) , Keystone Earth (Stephen King), "there and back" (Tolkien.... Bilbo Baggins's fictional book "There and back again"), The Sea Lady (H.G.Wells), Snow, Glass, Apples (a darker twist on Snow White by Neil Gaiman) The man in the moon (could refer to the novel by James Blaylock but since its rather recently published in 2002 i bet it refers to " The man in the Moone" written by Bishop Francis Godwin late 1620's because it is considered one of the works of early science fiction though i would say that theme and honor falls to Lucian) and Tir na Nog refers to the land of eternal youth .... ( a Neverland) the underworld of Irish Mythology.

    "Noise" was the first single and "Harvest" was the second single release. All of the rest were released together. This song is all about discovering and unleashing the human imagination. The need to hear and create stories to open the imagination. There a many references to books & stories in this song. Floor is very strong in the key of D. Nightwish like many contemporary metal bands tune their guitars to D instead of E. This gives bands a deeper heavier tonality which kind of makes the music darker. Black Sabbath, back in the day started this trend. After all they did invent the heavy metal sound. Great reaction video once again my friend. Next time. Peace.

They reach it by entering ancient burial mounds or caves, by journeying through a mist, by going under water, or by traveling across the sea for three days on an enchanted boat or Manannán's horse.[2] The tales of mortals who visit the Otherworld are referred to as echtrai (adventures) and baili (visions, ecstasies).[8] The path across the sea is called Mag Mell (Plain of Honey). I know that, in music there are so-called "musical elements" (or something like that, maybe wrong by traslation from spanish). Which are widely used in movie soundtracks, used in different themes with different melodies, but those elements are there to give a certain feeling or meaning to the musical piece. Tuomas sure composes a set of musical elements to insert them in all the songs on the album. (You see? I'm learning about music!)

      @@TheMuserResolute Perhaps, like Tuomas as a science fan (I'm a scientist), he defines some polynomial functions to generate the structure of his compositions (like TOOL, check his music, pure very complex mathematical art), and based on this polynomial functions (maybe auric polynomial functions like those used in photography for perfect distribution of space and lighting ... or maybe Fibonacci-style progressions), and insert these musical elements to cut this mathematical progression and cause cuts or variations that generate those interesting sensations that Nightwish songs provoke (up, down, up, crescendo, grand finale with these elements in between cutting the monotony of the progression), perhaps these inserts also have a definite complex progression, not at the song level, but at the album level. Or maybe as a talented songwriter, he just doesn't calculate, he just does it naturally. (Or maybe... I'm mathematically paranoid).

    reason for your confusion is that 'Noise' and 'Harvest' were official singles promoting an album. In fact, as you noticed 'Noise' is the only 'real' promotional video as well. Then they also released 'Ad Astra'. the only video made for CD 2. And then they released the rest in one go along with the album.

  • @tillthestarsevaporate
    @tillthestarsevaporate 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    The singles, Noise and Harvest, were released first. The rest were released on April 10 (album release day) and How's the Heart on the following day (from what I remember, which was released on the Nuclear Blast channel not the Nightwish one, so that's what I attribute the one day delay to--I remember I was waiting for it the day the album was released but I had to wait till the next day). Also, Ad Astra (the very final track on CD2) was also released earlier, as sort of a single as well, or a teaser if you will.

    What is it about the various works of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Mahler, Brahms, Stravinsky, Wagner, Queen, Nightwish, etc., that allows one to recognize who composed a previously unheard work? And, whether it is an early, middle, or later work of that artist. That is what, I think, you are trying to tie in between "Noise" and "Pan": you are just trying to reconcile the current "voice" of Nightwish. It is a bit different voice, but one that is still distinctly Nightwish.

  • @DivinityEthereal

    A lot of Nightwish songs and albums loop into others. :) Parts of All The Works Of Nature loop in with others, and the Imaginarium album has a song that has little parts of almost all the album's songs :)

    Noise was the first song released as a single, harvest was the second. The band opted Also to release the entire album w/Lyrics in effort to battle both unofficial Lyrics videos and album leaks via both TH-cam and their file storing company. In fact, many people received their album pre-order several days before the official release. I, myself, had pre-ordered the album soon as it went live and received my copy 6 days prior to the official release (April 10, 2020)
    Edit: I was told personally via Instagram by Toni piju (a band/tour,/etc manager) that the reason for the early release was to jump ahead of the album leaks

Hapiness and sadness are coexisting parts of our life
    Tumoas described this lyric as celebration of life with all it's beautiful and dark sides simultaneously.

    Well, Nightwish is ehhhh Nightwish (and I love it). As a music teacher I would like to see/hear your reaction to (like Floor) a Dutchman called Arjen (Ar-yun) Lucassen.
    Please react to these TOP VARIETY OF MANY MUSICAL INTRUMENTS/SINGERS: The Source is the 9th studio album from Ayreon, a progressive metal/rock opera project by Dutch musician Arjen Anthony Lucassen, released on April 28, 2017. ‘The Day That The World Breaks Down’ is a song that features all 11 (well known) main guest singers [James LaBrie (Dream Theater), Tommy Karevik (Kamelot, Seventh Wonder), Tommy Rogers (Between the Buried and Me) , Simone Simons (Epica), Nils K. Rue (Pagan's Mind), Tobias Sammet (Edguy, Avantasia), Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), Mike Mills (ToeHider), Russell Allen (Symphony X), Michael Eriksen (Circus Maximus), Floor Jansen (Nightwish)] and is taken from that album. Arjen himself is telling (in subtitles) who the singers are and which instruments are used and by what standards.
    Btw. The clip is 13 min. Long and I think you won’t regret it !!

    This song is about the power of human imagination. If you take a look at the lyrics here genius.com/Nightwish-pan-lyrics you will find greyed sections with explanations/interpretations from other people worth checking out. However, I'd like to add that "something wicked their way came" could also refer to Ray Bradbury's novel "Something Wicked This Way Comes" which was filmed by Disney in 1983 since Tuomas is a big Disney fan. Also, if you take the dots on those dominoes pieces shown in the music video & arrange them as numbers in the order 1 - 5 - 6 - 4, you get the chord progression of many well known songs en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_containing_the_I%E2%80%93V%E2%80%93vi%E2%80%93IV_progression

    So as the title of the album depicts, all vocalized songs of the first half themed on conditions of being human and later in all works adorn... are the nature theme this was not a concept album as in past works. As floor has mentioned in interviews the album adds DNA from each song into the next, music as an intro kind of gives you a little taste of the rest of the album. Enjoy. I love the way you've embraced the space bar to its full meme potential. Pan is *possibly* my favourite on this album. I think it will be phenominal live. This album blends together so well in one sitting. It's either through clever composing or a side effect of coming up with a lot of material at the same time. Certainly there is a lot of tone and chromatic ideas. In the classical tracks from "all the worlds of nature that adorn the world (CD2 of this album), I think you can hear the "noise" melody in the track that represents the sea. You should definitely check out the instrumental CD 2.

    You may very well be right about the reference to Noise. Toumoas's songs often talk to each other. Lyrical and musical themes interweaving and repeating across the album or their entire discography. On this album you still have How's The Heart waiting for you, which contains a reference to Elan from Endless Forms Most Beautiful album which, in turn, references Meadows of Heaven from Dark Passion Play.
    Just as an example :)
