    It's apparently a cello - although the lowest note is Bb 1. C string tuned down? Discuss:

    • @wimg.2377

      Isn't it a contrabass? Sounds like I have heard in a few classical, baroque pieces. Not used a lot that low, but it makes it sound with such medieval mystery, it just tugs your strings, even if slowly, but extended, meaningful ...
      P.S.: I just realizied that what we call a contrabass here is called a double bass over where you are :).
      P.S.2: Ok read a bit more further down here :). A cello, with down-tuned C-string? Wow ....

    • @TheMuserResolute
      @TheMuserResolute  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yup, contrabass is a double bass 🙂 I thought it was a double bass but I looked it up, seems to be a cello. It hits a B flat 1 which is below the range of a cello, but not unreasonable that it was scored for the bottom string (C string) to be tuned down a tone

    • @maxzero9647
      @maxzero9647 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@TheMuserResolute It makes sense. Detuning strings is really common in metal and rock, but you mostly see it on the guitar and bass. Why not other strings, too?

    • @forkless

      It's possible that it went through a creative choice during the mixing process and they lowered the pitch on the cello track using a plugin (eg. melodyne et al)

    I can't understand why some people don't like this album, because they say this doesn't sound like Nightwish.
    What I love about Nightwish is that they are evolving all the time. It may take some time for some people to digest all new vibes, but what can you possible expect from musicians who are as talented as Nightwish is, especially Tuomas. 10 albums with same tune? Nope, not going to happen...

    Regarding "Green": when I first listened to this, I wondered why Tuomas removed the melody and left the harmonic structure (other than it is breathtakingly beautiful). I think in his mischievous way of drawing the listener into being part of the music, he has left it so I (and others) can fill in "the silence between the notes" . And those of us who love to hike, many of us know that, in nature, the most important part of the experience is the silence that resonates between the myriad heartbeats.

    As to your not-subscribed question:
    The problem for one is that you don't get through your recommended list at all when you subscribe to too many channels. I have gone from 150 or so channels back to 30, as it became unworkable, unmanageable and also added too many songs and performances I wasn't even closely interested in :).
    However, it really made me think very carefully about which channels I really wanted to stay subscribed too (yours being one of them :)).

    P.S. your end cards covered up the text you had there, guessing it said something like "Put suggestions in the comments" (of what to react to next) or similar.... That gorgeous melody reminds of one part of one old Finnish song "Päivänsäde ja Menninkäinen" sang by Tapio Rautavaara. I was feeling it so familiar as well all the time that i had to look for where i got the idea from. It is not of course exactly the same, but the notes are there! Far fetched...? Maybe not by knowing anything about Tuomas, he might even be totally aware of this and giving the respect for the origins.

    Yours is one the most informed commentary I have seen when it comes to Tuomas' works. More to the point, you _get_ his work. The beauty of Tuomas' genius is that it is unconstrained. This leaves some behind, but that is to be expected. The entire album - both CDs - is a masterpiece, and Tuomas stands easily in the company of modern composers like Sibelius and Nielsen, Ralph Vaughn Williams and Karl Orff, Hans Zimmer and Thomas Bergersen.

    Only just found this! Great to see you react to an underappreciated work, and good to hear the thoughts of someone with musical knowledge. (I often have this on repeat when I am working at home, but TH-cam only just suggested your reaction. Go figure.) Some observations:
    1. When Tuomas started working with arranger Pip Williams (while composing Once IIRC), he would try to do some really strange things in his orchestral score and Pip would patiently explain why they couldn't work. As time has gone on Tuomas has learned the art of the possible and Kit has had less work to do, but I think some of the creativity you hear in the arrangement comes from Tuomas' non-traditional route into orchestral composition.
    2. On a related note, apparently rock and metal composers are much more prone to leaving a piece unresolved. (I'm not musically knowledgeable so I don't really know what that means, but hey...)
    3. Another thing to thank Pip for is that he introduced Troy to the band!
    4. Thanks for doing the fan video - I was really disappointed when Doug Helvering didn't.
    All the best

    Hey MTR, found you this week and I been enjoying your Reaction (Reactionalysis) I wanted to ask you if you ever heard of The Warning a Mexican Rock Band, based out of Monterrey Mexico with a worldwide following. I wanted to share a some history because its important for you know their background and that this is not an overnight success but a band that has been working for 8 years to get to where they are today, just like the great rock/metal bands of old, growing organically to the point that they are set to explode into the world of Rock and to especially make a different to women in rock today! First of all they are all under 21 year of age today with the youngest being 16 with 1EP and 2 albums under their belt with their 3rd. Album coming out in a few weeks under the Lava/Republic label, first one of a 5 record deal that they just inked this past July of 2020, with complete creative control of their music and the label can only recommend, it's up to the Ladies to approve, unheard of for an independent band being signed by a major label. Here are some milestones in their young career. They have been approached by various record labels and reality shows and they have turned them down as they wanted to keep the integrity of their music and image.
    2012 They became a band Dany (Guitar & Main Vocal, 12yrs old), Pau (Drums & Main Vocal, 10yrs old), and Ale (Bass & Chorus, 7yrs old)
    2013 The Warning was born.
    2015 First EP - Escape the Mind
    2017 1st. Album XXI Century Blood
    2018 2nd. Album Queen of the Murder Scene a concept album that tells a story of longing, regret, self-loathing, and follows a woman into full-on psychosis, murder, suicide. Rock Opera! Dull Knives is from this story, amazing Lyrics.
    32 original songs independently done thru Patreon and Kickstarter, they have gotten shoutouts on Social Media from bands that have influenced them:
    Kirk Hammett of Metalica Enter Sand Cover tweeted "The drummer kicks maximum ass"! twitter.com/KirkHammett/status/586590482169368577
    Lzzy Hale from HaleStorm after seeing this performance asked them to tour with her after Covid twitter.com/LZZYHALE/status/1294889194528047105
    After Ale (Bass) did a cover of the Hysteria riff for fans, MUSE gave her a shoutout on all their social media platforms twitter.com/muse/status/1305098901200961536
    Dave Ellefson of Megadeath, recently congratulated them on IG as they were recording their 3rd. Album in the fall of 2020, He taught them, classes, at the Berklee College of Music in 2015 and has kept up with their progress instagram.com/p/CGx64epJ71o/
    They have been notice and acclaimed by Cold Play, Dee Snider (Twisted Sister) they opened Concerts 2x Def Leppard, The Killers, Stryper, they performed at Hell or Heaven festival, only Mexican Band invited. Rock al Parque in Colombia, these are some of the largest rock festivals in latín America and many others.
    They are the only band from Mexico and the only Rock Band from Latin America to ever sign DIRECTLY with a major U.S. label SUB!

      using it in moors along with the pipes (at least to me) represents the vikings of that area, which gets hammered home in anthropocene as humanity always thrived along water- oceans, rivers, lakes- and when there was no ocean left to conquer we took to the skies, sailing among clouds, and eventually, stars. there's hints of ad astra in anthropocene too.
      (in ad astra i hear a countermelody to the end of 'shudder before the beautiful' as well!)

    Please make reaction to Diana Ankudinova - the most unique young talented singer.
    One of my favourite things to find and enjoy is music that gives me chills and goosebumps. I was cruising TH-cam recently and discovered a Russian talent show contestant that did just that, with one of the best, most unique voices I've heard in many years. Her delivery was nothing short of magical and I searched out more and more and more, and...more chills.
    I was stunned to find that the first performance I heard was when she was 14!!!! She's now 17 and still developing. She sings in Russian, French, English and Arabic.
    The covers she performed on that show are very popular on TH-cam. Many TH-camrs publish reactions on these performances, which include the ethnic song "River" (in a new musical arrangement), "Blizzard", "Wicked Game", "Human", "Derniere Danse", "Helwa Ya Baladi" and others.
    Please react to one of Diana's songs and I promise she will surprise you.

      I also find the repetition of motifs and themes and chords and melodies and harmonics to fit the themes of humans and nature, that we see echoes of things in both, that we see similarities and we repeat history 9and human nature) over and over. Each time may sound slightly different, but it's the same old theme since 1916 (heh). I also see it as a "we're all linked together" and "each system may seem different but is still connected".

  • @SynphamyMusic

    That melody that the piano and harp play early on in Ad Astra while the woman is talking is the same melody the boy sings in Vista... My thoughts on Anthropocene when you brought up the return of the melody with the double bass and the visuals of the cityscapes... I think that part comes back to imply that nature is still there but the melody in that section sort of differs slightly from the earlier repetitions of it which makes me think it's a more corrupt or perhaps a broken version of the melody, to imply the damage being done to the Earth which as you say, makes you think of Procession. Anyway, fantastic video, thank you so much for including this masterpiece along with the album reactions... If you liked this, i would highly HIGHLY recommend checking out Tuomas' Scrooge album. It has some really incredible tracks that shouldn't go unheard.

    This is first time listening to this B-Side track. Have had it before at background. Tuomas is a great composer but am also wishing more unitedness to first album with the band. He is a great composer and maybe some day we might hear him in Hollywood movies. Where lot of his inspiration comes for certain composers.
    Btw... Jean Michel Jarre and Paris concert ;) Have you ever seen anyone else play laser harp! EDIT (Do not watch this, the out off sync video and keyboard playing in completely wrong section or rhythm kinda is dead giveaway) There goes my childhood ff.
    But some Jarre would not hurt for younger generations or you and me.

    I think this is on Nightwish album simply because Tuomas didn't feel like publishing this on his own name. For the rest of the band, the B-side was Tuomas' project that the band agreed to include on the album.

    • @IlkkaPrusi
      @IlkkaPrusi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it complements and expands on the lyrics of the first CD as well. Not as a separate piece, but something where the themes are explored again. If first CD is about humans and earth, second CD is about earth with humans (as a short period of existence during the span of it). Anyway, that's my take on it. I don't know the discussion behind the album, but I think both parts do complement each other. Somewhat like Greatest Show on Earth did but more laid out in different parts and that this is "timeless".

    • @MikkoRantalainen
      @MikkoRantalainen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IlkkaPrusi Yes, I agree that it still fits the whole album. I consider that the "Human :||: Nature" is supposed to be read as "human, human nature, nature" because of the repetition symbol in the middle. And the B-side is the nature. The song Noise is mostly about human nature, for example.
      My point is that the B-side is by Tuomas alone (though Floor has some voices in Ad Astra) instead of the whole band working there.

      @@TheMuserResolute Just adding my voice to you doing a reaction like this to music inspired by life and times of scrooge, as I don't very many other youtube reactors could do it in a way that does it justice.

    At the start: "This might be a listener."
    20 min later: "I could die now, I don't even care."

    The cellist is Caroline Dale, principal cello of the English Chamber Orchestra and the London Metropolitan Orchestra. I first came upon her about 10 years ago when she performed with David Gilmour on his solo live DVD of the Meltdown Concert from the Royal Festival Hall. Apparently she has performed with many other artists, including the likes of Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, David Gray Sinead O’Connor. She’s performed on a few U2 tracks and quite a lot of film soundtracks. I’m sure that over the years she has come up with a few tricks to expand the range and sound of the cello. I really enjoy her playing.

      Me too!!! It really got me because of how low the melody was - I’m sure they tuned the lowest string down

      My favorite cello player is Caroline Lavelle, although I must admit I never heard anything from her own work. She played with Loreena McKennitt, I saw her live in Amsterdam and she is also in the nights from alhambra DVD. And looking at wikipedia, she apparently did some work with Tarja.
