I like your videos! Useful and entertaining! However, next time don't throw away the cooler. There is a seal set available from Elring no. 868.220. It's not even 10 Euros in Germany. Cheers! Stephan
Got one of these to do soon. Thanks for the heads up about the seal, will order cooler kit. Was going to just strip it & hopefully find a round 'O' ring in collection to fit. The car has probably leaked £150 of oil by now as its been leaking badly for some time!
I've just had another dreaded coolant leak on the MK5 Mondeo. Last year I had the thermostat housing replaced after water was gushing out. Everything was fine since until, the last couple of months I'd noticed slow coolant loss when driving but when the car was parked, it didn't lose any. I took it into the garage and the mechanic told me that the oil cooler was "spraying out coolant like a sprinkler". It's getting replaced on Monday, so hopefully that'll solve yet another coolant loss problem.
A standard round o ring may well have fitted in that groove with persuasion. However considering the hassle to remove said oil cooler I guess it's not worth the risk of it not sealing.
I was once given a small roll of Samco hose tape to patch up a leaking rad hose God that stuff is so good But 12 years on I can’t find any of the same stuff for love or money You would never need to buy a new hose again
My coolant pipe came off my oil cooler on mk4 mondeo, had them chemically bond it back on and it’s still dripping slowly, they reckon I need a new cooler if it dosent work, not sure why tho, surely other ways to securely put the pipe on
I appreciate in your circumstances you can’t mess around as the car is a working taxi . in your opinion Would it be possible to use liquid gasket and lightly screw together- then when it’s formed up fully bolt it up ? , cheers
Hi Alan, how many hours labour is it to replace this oil cooler? You said in the video the best way is to remove the alternator how many hours should all this take?
depends who's doing the job lol...you can just remove the throttle housing but its tight...i would say the job should be done within 2 hours and thats generous
@@alan4x - Alan thanks for the quick reply. My Mechanic is claiming this is an 8-10 hour job and he has to replace fan belts and pullys. I explained to him about removing the alternator but this was over the phone. Think he's mugging me off. Words are going to be had tomorrow.
@@thescallytrader its obviosly easier with alternator off but you don't have to touch it, i just remove the throttle body and thermostat housing now then you can unbolt the cooler and remove it from under the bonnet

That bottom rad hose that was not clipped in, do you have other mechanics as I understand the cars come in new, ? As for the "O" rings, have you tried a kit where you cut the correct size to the required length and superglue the ends together ? Another alternative would be to put a little ptfe tape under the "O" ring to pack it up :) Something you might like to add to your tool chest is a reel of Kapton tape, look it up :) I mainly work with industrial equipment that needs fixing NOW with limited spares on the shelf.
I was a parts man in a Ford main dealer for years, and this is typical they screw you for every penny they can get, we lost most of our sales to motor factors because of crap like this, great video though.

That loose radiator hose... Maybe one of your previous jobs? btw i keep old parts; maybe you need to canabalize bits off them? You could have made an o ring or look one up in an oring kit?Good video as always.
Hi, I have a Citroen Jumpy / Dispatch with the same engine and suspect a leak on the oil cooler. In Germany Elring has an oil cooler seal set and also the oil cooler individually! Much cheaper than the complete PSA / Ford oil filter housing with oil cooler. If I have the parts tomorrow, I will send the part numbers here in the comment, Greetings from Germany
Nice video again mr howatt ! Did any of your Mondeos have a dealer recall For the sump oil issue ? Basically the ecu did not give the signal early enough to the oil cooler to cool the oil and it burst one of the coolant pipes which resulted in no coolant and head gasket failure resulting in a new engine ! Ford however did not take any responsibility for this manufactured fault ! So had to pay from my own pocket for a new engine ! Gutted with the Mk5 so far lol !
