  • Join me for a very wet and windy day at the allotment!
    We take a sneak peek at the roof to locate the problem, make lots of progress clearing the site, revisit the no dig beds and I share a story time on Roo and her mischevious behaviour!
    All the best,
    Till next week,
    Laura

    Hello, Laura! I just found your channel a few days ago, and have been backtracking through your videos. You have certainly taken on a lot with the tiny garden, allotment and studying. You are an absolute delight; and a sparkling motivation for myself (68) and my husband (74). We’re starting our backyard garden this year & it’s an interesting project for both of us. Kind regards from Wyoming, USA. :0)

    Don’t do away with that metal cage! There are so many uses! Could be the top of a pumpkin arch, hold netting over a pond, roof for a tiny poly house….

      Love my tiny garden, I just need to remember that I have space at the allotment and I don't need to squish the plants in 🙈 thank you for being here and following the journey 🥰🤗

    You are making great progress on your lot and it's great to see you have some new tools 😊 and a barrow 😊 Roo Boo has a lot of energy that she's burning off while you work. She did look quite guilty when you talked about the water bottle on your bed 😅 . I do hope that all you needed was to pound those nails back in on your shed roof . You're doing great Laura you have gone through loads especially with that Fence, oh and also that Frame whatever it was that kept springing up.
    As for the Cardboard you're doing it right putting it down first before the Compost/Soil goes on top, eventually with all the Rain 🌧 and Worms 🪱 that Cardboard will all be Mulch so no worries it'll be good for the beds.
    Mischief Roo causing a leak on the bed 😂 i suppose that's better than a real leak 😂 if i was there i would be too busy laughing at what she did 🤣 you just have to laugh yourself 🤣 then give her a big kiss and cuddle afterwards 😚🤗

    ...
    A perfect movie start with this music from the get-go! 💚
    Roo has so much energy, bouncing around you 😂hilariously knocking things over 🥰 but still probably safer to carry her with you 🫣 if that's what she gets up to at home 🤭
    Good progress on the plot, and hopefully, the shed roof will stop leaking now....
    The no dig beds were built perfectly by you.....the only thing for you to consider is how you're going to keep the grass down around them
    .....as the edges of the cardboard will start breaking down, the grass is only now starting to grow much stronger from March onwards, and it would be a shame for all your hard work to be covered with weeds moving in......usually the paths would be covered with cardboard and heavy layer of woodchip..... or weed membrane and woodchip combo......the cardboad option, if at all possible, to reduce the plastic use 💚🌿

      @thetinygarden_  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      🤣🥰I wanted this to be a fun update because it was only me pottering about, and until the weather warms up I guess you're stuck with dorky ol' me!
      Roo is the bestest but she hasn't quite understood the notion of an inground bed yet, she's learning to tame her paws! 🐾🤦🏻‍♀️
      I really would love to keep grass paths on the plot, for two reasons, firstly for Roo...she loves to snack on it, as well as lay on it but, also I'd love to be able to walk around the plot with no shoes on in summer (woodchip hurts!!) I wonder will this be possible...🍀🤗🤞

      @spudsandroses 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @thetinygarden_ we love the dorky ol' you 🤣🤣💚🌿 and Roo 🐶

I studied fine art and I used to paint ( in oil was my favourite) until I had Fluffy and had to take on a job that brought a steady income in. Feel free to change your mind again and again and again about garden layout. It needs to suite you and don't be afraid to change it in the future if it did not work out after all. Also, you did it right with the cardboard boxes, if you do more of these beds, you can consider putting down multiple layers of these cardboards, you can wet them town between layers. That way it is heavy and won't blow away. The double layers of cardboard will make sure the breakdown process is a bit slower and gives more time for weeds to die off (and if you overlap the layers over seems, you can make sure weeds don't find the cardboard cracks and slip through).

    • @thetinygarden_
      @thetinygarden_  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      😅😅 I have a feeling changing my mind again and again might happen!! Oh that's a relief, I wasn't sure! I will definitely do a double layer on the next beds that go down! I also came to the comments just to say that changing your mind is a gardener's prerogative 😂
      Your ideas will change over time and though you might at some stage go "nope, that garden bed isn't working for me in that spot" and get a bit down about how much work is going to be involved in moving structures around, but it's worth remembering that if it's not working for your goals then it's going to be well worth changing it!

Even my most challenging bed that has nettles underneath is easier to maintain, I do think I would dig the nettles out though next time though but the rest of the beds are great!

    Hi Laura, when you dig out your nettles, put them into a drum of water and leave them there, ( stir every week or 2, it starts to stink hahaha ) nettle soup ( liquid feed ) its very good at adding Nitrogen for leafy greens, also if you can get a bit of comfrey to grow, once growing cut the stems down and put into a barrel of water, stir every couple of weeks and you have a very good liquid fertiliser, high in Potassium. If the roof continues to leak, cover it with a sheet of black plastic ( what people use to cover their beds, that will make the roof watertight.

    • @thetinygarden_

      Oh wow, I didn't know that about the comfrey being rich in potassium! I need to find a few containers for them! I love a free liquid feed 🙈🤣 I will keep the nettle weeds for sure, I am dredding digging them out 😅I was thinking that about the plastic tarp to bide me time 🤞🌧️

      @@thetinygarden_Hello, just a reminder that you'll probably want a secure lid on that nettle "tea" as it brews; this sort of thing can become quite whiffy and your allotment neighbors might complain while you're waiting for it to finish maturing. Same for the comfrey. Your allotment's going to be just lovely once you've got it set up.
      Your shed roof. You'll want some "bedding" material I think; what we find here looks like tar and in fact is known as roofing tar or black tar (comes in one-gallon tins or cans to the best of my knowledge), but it's used to seal the nail holes and to bed the lower edges of the rolled roofing material. There has to be a lot of overlap of the rolled roofing to keep wind-driven rain (or snow) from getting under the edges and up to the wood above the top edge of the layer beneath.

    Oh I think I can see a flaw with how they felted the roof. I would have felted it runnining the other way, starting at the bottom, so the felt overlapped to protect the direction of water run off, making it impossible for water to seep through the join.

    Put your compost heap in the least productive area. Mine is at the end of the plot in the shade of the the trees that belong to the railway. I would have very poor results if I tried to grow there, shadey and dry.

      @@thetinygarden_ Probably poor light or very near trees etc that suck the moisture out of the soil. My least productive part of the plot is next to a railway. The railway is full of large oak trees that stop the sun from 1 or 2pm. in that area. The roots of the trees also suck water out of the ground. The canopy of the trees reduce the rain in that area. I am sure that you will work it out.

    Be careful with the shed roof. Mine was letting in tons of water and when we took the old felt off the roof corner where all the water was coming in was completely rotten to the extent there was an ants nest in there. The rest of the roof was pretty solid though.
    Also you might find it helpful to check how water flows off the shed rood by pouring some water on and checking how it flows. It's probably flowing down off right were the leak is. Our shed sloped towards the back where the gutting is but because the shed is on a slope the water was coming off right at the corner and missing the guttering completely so I had to add an extra piece of guttering on the side of the shed to catch it.
    It may be possible for you to do a quick/temporary fix by lifting the felt and hammering in a small batten of wood at an angle (placed under the felt I mean) so that the rain water is redirected away from the corner where the leak is and towards gutting or where the felt is in better condition.

    • @thetinygarden_
      @thetinygarden_  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I plan to get some gutters for the shed, it also needs moving, the back corner has sunk into the soil 🙈 So a little work is needed to get it onto some sturdy free draining ground! I hope there are no ants, I did find a massive family of woodlice in the window frame! Thanks for the heads up, I think I am going to have to take a closer look under the felt to be sure 🫣🌧️
