There seems not much to be said about this Cortot pupil. Once he was already playing and recording, he had a serious car accident and then decided to retire and begun devoted to teaching. He spent about ten years teaching and then retired again to become a Bénédicte monk. Fortunately, he left us a few recordings that remain difficult to get. We can only complain about his recordings being currently unavailable. For about his Chopin Nocturnes, one can only say that with the Claire Huangci ones, they are surely the best we can have. De Brunhoff is a modest, introspective reading, devoid of any cloying but deeply moving. His music is as inhabited by the composer spirit. We won't find any ornaments, no trying to impress his audience. But just a strong will to get into the heart and soul of this music. Something he achieves through a perfect phrasing and a beautiful tone pitch. With the melodic lines always prevailing, De Brunhoff delicacy and brilliant sonority will lead you to one of the most precious and touching Nocturnes you can ever hear. Of course, I shall keep praising the Shebanova Chopin recordings, or the Weissenberg Nocturnes ("darker and stronger as they are), and the dreamy atmospheres of the Tamas Vasary Nocturnes rendition. But above any other, nowadays I sustain there's nothing as the fantastic Huangci Nocturnes account, and this delicate and deep De Brunhoff recording. Pitty this last one, as said, remains currently unavailable. Something difficult to understand, for it's enough to hear it once, to know it joins the Huangci interpretation in the peak of the best recordings ever made of these splendid works. Don't miss this subtle but very expressive reading. 🎵🎶🆗👍😔🙏
