    Good video John! I’m glad you are teaching proper pruning, especially with chainsaws! “Topping” bamboo ruins the beautiful form of the plant. I’d recommend cutting it back with a spade, ideally an all steel spade. Reducing the amount of space the grove takes up is the best way to keep bamboo in check.

    I can always be happy when watching another of your videos. Yes care must be taken when going up to prune trees. Another vlogger confessed that he smoked weed and then climbed up to prune a tree but brilliantly cut off the branch he was sitting on and broke several bones! Don’t do that. (I wondered if that was a joke but I don’t think so.).

    What a wonderful garden! New sub here -- I need to go back and look at some of the summer.Spring videos to see it in full bloom. The video was recommended because of the birch tree removal as I am clearing a lot of trees on my channel as part of an oak savanna restoration. I'm hoping to get some tips for a prairie garden I am building at the edges of the savanna restoration. I really like all of the pathways in your garden and hope to do something similar! Our garden will be native species only (SW Wisconsin) which is challenging, but that kind of adds to the fun 😁

    • @johnlordssecretgarden
      @johnlordssecretgarden  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My main tip is always be wary of introducing very vigorous plants that run at the root and are impossible to control, such as perhaps fireweed or some of the more vigorous golden rods. It’s easier to add than to remove.

    Thanks for putting the list of mentioned plants here above the video. I planted 20 trees. 10 birch and 10 bird cherry for the spring interest. By the sea the gales make it very difficult to get anything to stay in the soil but the section near the fence is sopping and full of moss anyway so not ideal for anything more. I'm going to replace the fence with hedging probably Miss Popple Fushia or the tiny pink kind. Quick growing and easily cut to height of 4 feet. Favorite shrub for fall winter is the Mahonia. Like the perfume counter.

    as a gardener when it comes to cutting down a plant that took years to grow, or 10’s of years, I have to think hard about removing it. I’m not gettin’ younger! I’ll play around with it first and try and be creative. Maybe limping it way up, or pollarding it low to create a small tree out of it, or cutting the limbs all the way up, to 1 foot length, all the way up to see what effect it will have with the new growth. It’s creative and fun to experiment. I have two 40’ parasol tress I’ve decided to eliminate, due to too much shade, after much thought. What I’ve decided to do instead of cut them down, which in itself is a huge undertaking. I’ve decided to “kill them” by stripping away 3” band of bark to the 2nd layer only - only about an inch deep. The skeletal structure of the tree will stay, birds can nest, owls and hawks can perch. It doesn’t need to be completely removed, and adds interest to the garden.

    No cutting trees! Before you consider It takes them so long to grow. If there is a tree I feel needs to go I first try either: bonsai it ( cutting it down to literally a few feet - a severe pollard) or consider removing 1/2 the limbs or maybe more, or limbing it way up. I see if there is something creative that can be done with it. Then, if I decide it should go I’ll cut away a strip of bark through the living layer to kill the tree, and leave the form, the skeleton....for the critters and birds. Of course I don’t have a huge fabulous garden like John’s! I have red clay and heat down here in the south!

    The chain saw needs sharpening. That's the big down-side of chain saws. They have to be sharpened. And hardly anyone really does it. At least on their own. They take the bloody thing down to the hardware store and have them do it. But that's not good. That's not self-reliant.
