    No kidding about birch being a pioneer species. It's common to see them here growing even in rain gutters or various cracks in buildings where there's enough moisture.

    Very interesting! I love birch trees, however they don’t thrive much where I live, in the high desert. They are so beautiful. Thanks for giving us more info on them.

    Very intresting! My Tree id teacher gave me a tree id list with only the botanical names but I started searching for content in the common name! I stumbled on this while looking for stuff on Betula pendula but my list also contained Betula papyrifera (I'm 99% sure this is the same tree) so this was helpful! Thank you!

    PLEASE expand this video and show how important it is to cut a plug for the birch hole using a stick that plugs and fits perfectly so it does not continue to flow , weaken the tree and make it susceptible to disease. This IS the responsible thing to do for everyone to know.

    • @BalticHomesteaders

      I don't see why not only they wont live as long. they prefer colder climates really but are fairly tolerant of anything thus why they're good pioneers.

    Is it just the silver birch you can tap ?

    • @BalticHomesteaders
      @BalticHomesteaders  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Do you mean in the birch family or all trees? Obviously you can tap maples which is what maple syrup is made from. I’ve heard of a sweet birch but don’t know anything about it.

    Here in the USA, all of the silver birch on the property I manage, are dying and are filled with mistletoe! What to do?

    • @BalticHomesteaders
      @BalticHomesteaders  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All you can do is have the mistletoe removed branch by branch or it will spread much like it has. Sounds drastic but it’s the only way really.

    • @miguelitos2446
      @miguelitos2446 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BalticHomesteaders thank you... unfortunately, we cut down most of the silver birch due to root damage in the plumbing and mistletoe on every major branch. The remaining trees are dying and the mistletoe?! Well, I'll do as you suggested, I really like the sturdy silver birch!

    • @BalticHomesteaders
      @BalticHomesteaders  ปีที่แล้ว

      Silver birch is highly susceptible to a beetle called bronze birch borer, especially if they are in too warm and dry of a climate. They can be treated for BBB with pesticides but as a Master Arborist I do not recommend planting this species in the US due to the pest problems.

    What do you mean you're going to drink that Birch juice that was dripping out of the tree you didn't mention anything about why you would drink it.
    Are you trying to say but it makes some kind of pancake syrup or you can make some kind of medicinal tea you didn't explain anything about the liquid drips that come out of the first tree when you make a hole

    • @BalticHomesteaders
      @BalticHomesteaders  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I think I covered it all in another video dedicated to the subject but yes you can drink the birch tree juice straight out of the tree and it's very good for you apparently. It has a slightly sweet taste but not like maple juice which is far sweeter. Here you go th-cam.com/video/MoxcInVxFx4/w-d-xo.html
