HONEST TOTAL COST OF LIVING BUDGET PHUKET THAILAND OCTOBER 2022

  • so a lot of people have been questioning my budget and asking where do I spend each dollar here is a complete breakdown of everything I spent where the money was allocated for the month of October...
keep in mind guys that my cost of living is very very low because I'm not going to the bars I'm not doing all of the crazy stuff that people do on a two-week vacation here...
I also take advantage when I can of any deals that I find because I know that I'm going to use that stuff down the road so if I can get it for half price today I buy it...
the thing is if I find something for sale or half price I buy several of them I don't buy just one I buy several because I know I'm going to use that so I may as well save the money today so that I have extra money down the road...

I'm here in a 1 bedroom condo, 10,000 Baht/month. Not fancy but has air, internet, kitchen, etc. Had a 2 hour Thai hot stone massage a couple days ago, 680 Baht. The food here is great & cheap. A lot of vegetables, soup, noodles, rice, pork etc. I just have to make sure its not TOO spicy!! I don't drink much anymore so, beer budget for me is basically a non-starter. I had a Leo a couple of days ago, 60Baht!! We're going to Krabi for a couple of days on Saturday. Zoey & I are taking a long boat ride to Hung island for an afternoon. I don't mind the heat, it's the humidity that kills me. I know you're living the good life my friend!!! KEEP IT UP!!

368 baht a day on food and drink (excluding alcohol) in Phuket is the higher level of dedication! My wife and I spend 700-800 baht a day on food and drink here in Isan (so 350-400 baht a day for me). We do not drink alcohol but I included in that total 2k baht a month on all type of ice drink (coffee, tea, etc). My friend live in Phuket and went he told me the price for food and drink my jaw dropped. Everything on the beach seem so expensive. And even normal street food, especially farang food (in your case, Tacos), is very expensive. If you spend a Friday night outside a nice beach front restaurant you can easily spend 3-4 days worth of food in one night.
But you do seem to enjoy the very cheap Thai food which I do not. The very inexpensive Thai food over here is part of the body my stomach cannot handle (liver, blood, legs, etc). I can't eat rice and noodle dish more then once a day. That same friend told me that grocery price in Phuket is the same as everywhere else in Thailand, which would be amazing except I don't cook. If it was not for our many dogs, I would probably try Phuket. But with our dogs, I can't live like you in a nice bungalow. It need to be a house more remotely and in Phuket I'm afraid it will be way over budget.
p.s: $12 a month on Coca Cola is absolutely insane! But at least it's not Pepsi...

    • @whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean
      @whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean  ปีที่แล้ว +1

and the key here Max is the fact that I do enjoy the cheap local Thai food I'm not eating crazy Western stuff yes I do have tacos from time to time but I limit that to once a month or I go to this fantastic place that has happy hour tacos for 45 baht
I don't go to the waterfront restaurants very often if I do I go to specific ones where I know the prices are more in line with what I'm comfortable spending
as for groceries again I don't cook at home because to me it's just a waste of my time it's a waste of my energy and I'm not going to be able to cook as well as I can eat out it's just not going to happen...
you know today it's funny because I was talking to a friend of mine here and I said I spent $140 Baht on my meals today
I had stewed pork leg with rice and soup plus a bottle of water and it was 60 baht
for dinner I wasn't really hungry because I did have a lot of water throughout the day so I had tonight sweet and sour stir fried chicken with rice plus a 🍌 smoothie and that cost me 80 baht
So my food expenses for the day were only 140 baby
And I loved my food amd am more than full
If anything I ate way too much sweet and sour stir fry...
      Cheers Mate 🍺
by the way I'm so impressed that you have as many dogs as you have congratulations
also I should note that I do not drink coffee I do not drink iced coffee I don't drink tea or any of that stuff..
Typically if I'm not drinking Coke I'm having a coconut or a smoothie or water
And yes the $12 is absolutely stupid

Great video doc, your enthusiasm is contagious! Brings back memories. I, too, wanted to buy a bike when I was living there for a year, but decided against it after doing a deep dive into legal liability. If the law hasn't changed since 2016, 3rd party legal liability defaults to the motorcycle owner in the event of an accident by the renter. Thus, I opted to rent a bike monthly, rather than buy one. As always, do your own research before buying one.

    • @whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean

Great Videos Not sure why people would Troll you over doing what you like to do but just tell them you will transfer them to the Refund Department if they do not like the content.
I must say I am jealous of you living the dream now they I have been planning on for a while.
I heard you talk about investments in one of your videos and that is exactly what I have been doing in my portfolio. I have been investing into Dividend stocks and it is paying enough to cover my rent now so hopefully one day I will be where you are and enjoying the good life until it is my time to go.

I'll be honest with you it almost seems like the trolls are just jealous I'm not sure if that's what it is but for the most part the majority of them have never been to Thailand so they don't know what it actually costs to live here....
that's awesome man that you are investing and that's incredible that it's covering your rent that makes me so happy to hear..
The only advice I would give you is why are you renting and not owning...
Keep in mind I'm a former realtor so that's one of my loaded questions.
      Lol
but at the end of the day owning real estate is what has allowed me to do what I'm doing..
More so than even the Investments..
keep plugging away keep investing keep being smart and I'm going to tell you something man you'll be living the dream to soon I promise you

Thanks Mark for the informative, entertaining content. I am an American over 50 and have long considered an extended stay in TH, possibly leading to a Type O "retirement" visa if initial stay is satisfactory. As a Canadian you get 45+30 visa-exempt days for 1900 baht/$53 plus the cost of a short "visa run" trip, and repeat indefinitely? Please correct me if I am wrong, but it seems this process could cost as little as ~$800 per year. This may be advantageous in a number of ways compared to the usual Type O visa.

Love Hugo Hub! Very much my atmosphere, food is okay to good, pricing fair, parking was bad last year (car).
About your bike, I would suggest you change your mind and buy a bike, it's gonna really make a difference in 1+ year, buy a brand new one and you have no worries, as you said yourself, you have enough money to live for ever in Thailand, with a real estate background, renting a bike is just not a smart move, flexible or not, let's be realistic, are you ever gonna move back to Canada? Even if you do, you can sell the bike and then count your spend money over all those months/years, it's gonna add up. It's not too late to opt for buying!
About fines, in Phuket you can easily obtain a Thai drivers license, even on a tourist visa, it's basically pay the right agent to get you in the exam, from there it's so easy, it took me (Pattaya) 6k baht and 1 full day to get both car and motorcycle license (where motorcycle I had to do computer and drive exam). As you have the bases covered with rent/food/insurance, I think it's time to step up and cover the details ;) and don't forget what a great vlog or 2-3 you can make of that experience.
Coca cola now has less sugar original tase bottles in Big C, they are about between the taste of zero and original, but less sugar, if you are talking about poison then try to cut on the sugar, eventually you're gonna be better off without the coke sugar.
If you're not living the best, why bother, oof, that's gonna hit some people in a bad way XD
Cheers Doc! We had a huge flood yesterday but today it's sunny again, have a great day!

Hey brother yeah Hugo hub is a lot of fun you are right about the food and the pricing it's okay I don't go there often usually once maybe twice a month...
as for the bike like I said that was my one mistake however because of my future traveling plans buying a bike now is rather pointless and hopefully you'll keep watching in the future and understand why I'm saying that..
But yes had I have known I was going to be here this long I definitely would have in hindsight bought a bike....
as for the spending I'm trying to show people how I spend it so I will be releasing videos here and there. Periodically so that people can see them..
and the coke yes the coke is definitely killing me and I am trying so now when I go to restaurants I only order water or coconuts ..
thanks for watching man I truly appreciate it cheers my friend and have a great day...

Hi Mark, I made this comment on a previous video, but reposting it here, as I'm hoping you'll see it. Thanks again for the informative videos!.... As a fellow Canadian approaching 50 and considering a move to Phuket to retire, I really appreciate your content. Thank you! Would you consider making a video about how you thought through creating a savings / spending plan for yourself? Not expecting you to divulge any personal financial info of course, just wondering about your thought process around finances before making the leap. For instance, if one wanted to live such and such a lifestyle, spending say 50,000 or 100,000 baht per month, etc., what amount of total savings would one need in order to comfortably spend that amount monthly from age 50 onwards until the end of the ride? Are you following any sort of algorithm for planning withdrawals from your savings, such as the old 4% rule, or some other strategy? I’d be interested to hear your approach to this…. Cheers!

Itz funny, and I total agree about "good offers".
Yes u need to have some extra $ to do such things, but I never understand ppl who just ignore stuff like that.
U can spend ur buck just once!
Easy example here in Germany would be, coffee. My favorite brand costs usualy like 4-5€/package.
But sometimes there are special offers like 3.20€, or even 2.80€..which is almost around 40% less.
So I take like 24 packs, instead of one and I'm fine for at least a year.
As long as u can afford it, itz imo a no brainer.
What I also noticed, especially ppl who obviously haven't rly much money, tend to buy the expensive stuff and brands. Itz like they want to show they can afford it.
I'm the opposite, I can easy afford it, I just don't get the point to spend way more as needed 😂
Which at the end, gives u alot opportunities to save money for invests and so on.
Or stuff which is on discount, cuz it the "lasting date" is gonna to expire soon... Even stuff like salt... 50% drop down and ppl don't take it cuz "iit could expire"... Yes... Off course... 10million years in the ground. And cuz itz on discount it could maybe get bad 🤦🏼‍♂️😂
Fine for me, I take the risk 😉🤣
    And not to forget,

It seems like an awful risky venture if you're talking about the one where you have to invest a certain amount of money here.

Now they have a 10-year long-term retirement Visa which sounds amazing it's only 50, 000bsht but admittedly the criteria seems pretty steep
the thing that concerns me about investment visas like the elite Visa is that you have no idea what you're investing in you don't know what the market is like here etc etc

okay David first off here in southeast Asia it's very uncommon that people tip usually if you're going to a street food stall you never tip the only time you tip on the is if you go to a restaurant that has air conditioning..
That being said I always give a little bit extra to street food vendor because I know how hard they work...
The massage shops they really right now are relying on some type of tipping if they're not doing happy ending massages..
now what I do is if I go in and I get a massage and it cost me $150 I always give 200 Baht it's a little bit extra but it also helps me go back several different times to that same masseuse and give them money on a regular basis ..
but you will find that tipping here tipping is not one of those things that is required and it's not expected ..
