- The Tata Punch belongs to a family of solid SUVs from the manufacturer. Smallest sibling to the Harrier and the Safari. Can it punch above its weight? We head to the highest tea estate in the world, on a pure 4x4 track, to find out. Kolukkumalai, perched 7,130 feet up in the Western Ghats on the border of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, is the highest tea estate in the world. The peaks here are tall, and craggy, with steep climbs and rocky trails. Getting up here isn’t easy. You can trek up the mountain or hitch a ride in the 4x4s that jiggle, bounce and crawl their way up here. The views are spectacular but so are the drops. This isn’t a climb for the faint of heart. The trail up to is just 17km long but it is super tricky - rutted and rocky, with extremely tight hairpin bends, and even steeper climbs. Forget 2WD cars and SUVs, the locals know they will break down and don’t even allow them up here lest the stricken car block access to the tea gardens. Only 4x4s are allowed, and that too driven by local drivers who have the experience of driving this trail. So the question remains, Does the Punch have the capabilities of grown-up SUVs? Compact SUVs deliver this impression that they’re just hatchbacks on stilts - hatchbacks with heavy lipstick and jacked-up suspension. Does the Punch move away from that trend? There’s no other way of verifying it than putting it to the test.

Ohh.. Kolukkumalai. This route from Suryanelli to Kolukkumamai is one of the most scenic routes in Kerala. There is also a trekking route from the other side of the Kolukkumamai estate to reach Kurangani village in Tamil Nadu. (20kms)

The Punch is a fabulous car. Suprerbly engineered. And it just flattens the road. It is a real SUV. Better than many midsize SUVs. Only fly in the ointment is the bad QC and equally bad after sales service. Tata please improve these and the Punch will outpunch every car.
Let's hope Tata is listening!
It badly needs a better engine though. Same as altroz. The chassis is much better and can easily handle better engines. But I'm hopeful the new engines will fix this. As for the service, there's no fix for that
Tata should provide traction control and ESP as standard in Punch

Great video sirish!!! I anyday love your narrative skills and the cinematography of evo India camera crew!!! But i guess the last 10 km of the sandakphu trail is way tougher than this with much higher degrees of ascent and slippery rocky and narrower terrain!!!

Both the places have their own challenges.
The AMT punch comes with an electronic locking differential function which Tata calls "traction pro mode". Just wondering if it would have been more suited for the terrain.
Basically you gain more traction in some situations but lose the control you have with manual transmission.
Any thoughts?
Electronic aids will always make it easier for a common driver to get the best performance without having to worry. However, for a skilled driver manual offers far better control.

As a person who owns Tata Tiago i can confirm that that engine would give up before it reached the peak. Went to Dzukuo valley on a trip the ground clearance have any problems but the car engine gave up on us it was chocking in itself. Went to higher altitudes too but the roads were fine. This engine gives up upon start and stop traffic hi high altitude. The suspension on tiago is the best that I ever felt Tata knows suspension.👍
That should never be a problem. WIth EFI, a car knows better how to adapt to change in altitudes and air pressures.

Punch is jacked up hatch based on altroz platform and exter is same based on i10 platform, and yes better platform compensates 1 extra cylinder.
A platform is always meant to deliver different body styles. There are platforms out there that can take on all body styles.
Also I would always say - It’s the driver who makes these challenges attainable not the car. Without driving skills even mighty SUV’s get struck on such terrains.
Finally, LORD AULTO got some competition.

This chase the alpha architecture is capable but with1.5 revotroc diesel this will be a wow more than this three cylinder 1.2 revtron petrol
The fact that the Punch did this trail with ease with the 1.2 petrol, means it can take on the daily grind and highway drives with ease!

Only one way to find out! Hope we get to see some Exter off-roading. Perhaps elsewhere if not here.
Exter fails to inspire the confidence even in some bad City roads. Its suspension is too soft.

Tata is everywhere. For eg Tata consumer has as tea estate in munnar which covers hundreds of acres for producing Tata tea in its factory which is before munnar

I think the Punch will conquer this climb because it is a FWD car and it's weight is also less as compared to other SUVs and the biggest advantage is it's 5 speed MT

We did this trail in 2015 in my Ford ECOSPORT. It was not that easy to do and you need a lot of patience to do it in a 2WD however it is not that tough as it is exxagerated here.
