1965 First demos | The Doors 01. End of the night 02. Go insane 03. Hello, I love you 04. Moonlight drive 05. My eyes have seen you 06. Summer's almost gone 07. Hyacinth house
Saw the Doors at a night club called the Cove in Worcester , MA. in July 1966. Excellant show the following week I was off to a place called Vietnam for two tours of brutal combat. I was never the same.
Ray Manzarek was a customer at my family’s cafe. Juanita’s cafe in Olvera streets. He was the only person of many celebrities who have eaten there that I asked for an autograph . I told him he was a legend . I traded him lunch for an autograph! He was super cool and friendly!
I met Ray at a DVD store on Pico Blvd called Laser Blazer in the early 2000s. He had a stack of DVDs that matched mine and we started talking about film and the whole time I was thinking, "Oh my God, I'm talking to a legend." I finally worked up the nerve and casually said, "I'm a big fan of your music." He was very gracious and we continued to talk about film and "Jimbo" and Ray's refusal to watch The Doors by Oliver Stone because he felt like it didn't honor the memory of Jim. I said that the movie had its merits and turned on a lot of young people to their music, which he appreciated. We talked about when he knew it was over, when the spirit had left Jim. He seemed very protective of him, like an older brother. His wife Dorothy finally walked up, he introduced her and they left. Sweet guy.
Why is nobody talking about how much Robby contributed to the band? It feels so empty without him! I think his guitar playing really helped them find their sound.
I think everyone knows enough about it to not need to talk about it. It’s pretty well known that Bob wrote light that fire and a bunch of other hits of this friggin’ band. Makes one wonder of Jemorrison was really the genius everyone makes him out to be.
It's hilarious to go back and listen to these every once in a while. Jim sounded like he was trying to sing like Mick Jagger or something. What magic when he found his own voice.

The guitar style of Robbie Krieger is missing and a terrible harmonica is playing instead. I can see why this Demo was rejected from all the labels they were shopping it around to. Morrisons voice is not the Crooner and Blues shouter he is on the Electra debut. Here he sounds like a teenager. So this is interesting to hear. Hello I love you is clear here but that horrible Harmonica ruins it.
@@roccidisopa661 Oh, I stand corrected then! Manzerak said they were rejected by every label they sent it to. It worked out well at Electra finally. Jac Holzman was smart and knew he had lightning in a Bottle with the Doors. And Paul Rothschild and Bruce Botnick were the perfect producer and engineer for them. Botnick especially is remastering and releasing great live shows on Rhino Records.
My Doors phase started around 75' they were a big part of my youths soundtrack...hearing this is wonderful...we all have Doors origin stories in our craniums...this solidifies my origin story...
That sounds like a cover band without Krieger’s guitar and Manzarek’s fender rhodes. But we can hear the color of the Morrison’s voice. Thanks for the sharing. 🙏
Ya got that backwards. Jim used "Go Insane" in Celebration of the Lizard and called it A Little Game. As is heard here, the lyrics were written in '65, years before he wrote Celebration.
Hyacinth house is the only song that doesn't belong to 1965. It's written 1970 in Robbie house. He is the one on guitar. Also, most of this songs sing Ray and his brother Rick ( guitar) , backed with Jim M. The other brother played harmonica. Soon after demo fiasco, Ray brothers quit, Robbie joined the band recommended by John Densmore, since they were play together in previous band Psychedelic rangers
Recording engineers are the unacknowledged artists of most bands. Just listen to these songs and realize how much the final product was improved by the recording engineers.
I met The Doors in 1989, listening a radio show viernes at night. Never knew who they were or how the looked like. LA Woman was the track. The haunting voice of Jimbo misleaded me, cos I thought he was black ha ha. That year in Christmas I asked my parents to buy me THE BEST OF, an 2 LP album; later collected their LPs originals, no reissues. Two years later, 1991, The Doors were trendy because the movie, which I saw in the very premiere. Went to see Ray and Robbie when the played with The Doors of the 21 Century in Lima. Mojo Risin!
pfft...everyone knows Robby was the spleen. soul and leader mean the same thing, heart and leader pretty much mean the same thing too, but heart and soul are different. the heart is what creates the pulse by pumping blood, so I guess John wouldn't exist without Jim, and when Jim died John disappeared just like Marty McFly did, except this time they couldn't go back in time to save him, plus Marty was the guitarist, which means Robby was actually Jim the whole time. Jim couldn't pump the blood to save John which was himself, so they were out a drummer and a guitarist. Ray tried to sing but he couldn't find the right key, and protools didn't exist yet so he couldn't autotune his voice, so people stopped buying their records. so Ray lost his motivation and became an alcoholic, and without a heart or spleen he couldn't survive. this is all common knowledge.
Robby completely changed the dynamics of this band. On a completely different level, it was comparable to what happened between the yarbirds and Zeppelin ✌️
I think it's a little silly to chalk up the difference in sound to just Robby. There's a hundred things you can point out that are different besides "lack of guitar". The band - particularly Morrison - simply matured and honed their craft.
Does show you just how brilliant Robby is, while showing how much energy the other three can muster just the same, even without the essential guitar. Priceless early stuff. Great chemistry.
That Spanish guitar is so important to their sound. Love the garage rock quality of this but you can see how Robbie and Jim's later baratone really fill out what the Doors became.
I have this box set and can confirm although the tracks are all mixed randomly in with tracks from other sessions and spread across two of the four cds with nothing to signify they are from the same demo (unless it’s mentioned in the booklet which I lost years ago). Nice to have them here in the same place as it creates a pretty different vibe
@@timwilson755Remember? There was another demo of Moonlight Drive WITH Robby? It was the moment Robby got the gig, as the band loved his slide style. He really brought another level to the song.
@@risenfromyoutubesashesagai6302 yeah its pretty sweet.

According to Wikipedia this is Rick & The Ravens demo - the group became The Doors when Jim & Rick Manczarek (original spelling) quit when the demo yielded no traction and Robbie Krieger joined the band.
I don't really even like the Doors but...this is great. Yeah, it's bare bones garage punk music but it's (in my opinion) some of the best of that era. Damn, no wonder they became all time legends. This is really really great.
Really like the energy and garage sounds of the band here. They are missing Robbie, though. Some raucous guitar playing would have really made these tunes shine. Fun stuff.
WOW!!! No....(NO!!!)..... psychedelics needed or required to be blown away by this!!!! (Dont even need fine wine or the smoothest Tennessee Whiskey!)😳😳😃🤯😉) Thanks for sharing this!! (Given my "bromance" with Jim/"Jimbo", ((and even the rest of the Doors)), I would be curious if it was HIM to suggest that this music remain hidden from so many for all this time!! If so, what other wonders await us Doors/Jim/"Jimbo" fans??????
@@agentstanley29 You're right. But sometimes I ((Naively??? Idiotically???)) think that when it comes to some intoxicants, the idea of "enjoyment" is not really the goal, but rather "enhancement" or even "initiation"?? Though I will admit that when it came to my own ALCOHOL consumption, then basically "being entertained" was the goal. But I suspect that many who are, (or have been) "captivated" by the cult of personality of Jim Morrison and/or the music of The Doors in general, have taken the idea of exploring "inner space" as "psychenaughts" somewhat seriously, and the use of mind altering substances has played a role in such pursuits?? It's interesting to me, too, that when I was much younger, I indulged in Marijuana smoking as a form of amusement/entertainment, but since with my LATER uses of that drug, quite a profound level of psychological DISCOMFORT and even just plain TERROR has come with such uses!! Which might prompt one to ask WHY take/use such things? MY answer? Respect for the Spirit(S)? To pay "homage" (for lack of a better word) to at least the IDEA of the "Dark Night Of The Soul"? To ME personally, Jim Morrison was indeed an explorer of "Inner Space", and PERHAPS wanted to get to new "inner galaxies" faster than say, The Buddha, Who supposedly reached profound levels of enlightenment/knowledge by more slower and/or more DISCIPLINED methods????? Some may read this comment to you as meaningless babble or word salad, OR....Even as the utterances of a foolish if not misguided mystic, but since this is the music of the god
This sounds like very mid-sixties pop music with some beatnik bongos. Amazing how they transitioned these songs to something more psychedelic / rock. Songs like Hiacynth House are an amazing transformation.
Crei aber escuchado todo de los doors hasta hoy , lo senti no se que o como pero tuve que repetirlo varias veces para poder digerirl@. Gracias por subirlo a las venditas redes sociales.YEEEEEY
The later version of Moonlight Drive with Robby playing that nasty slide solo makes that song. It’s so fitting…probably a Robby tweaking the song….would love to have been in the studio when Robby says, “ hey guys, let me showing something I think will make this song rock”, and their jaws drop 😮
Thank you for sharing this documentary on the contribution of Robby Krieger to the band. Not being here on this recording is the before version. Thanks again for a slice of '65.
Honestly, yes, I miss Krieger in these tunes, but I miss the sound of Manzarek's organ even more. That instrument took these songs to a whole new place, fleshed out with Robby's guitar work, it really defined the psychedelic music of that era! And that's not taking anything away from Morrison, who was an incredible frontman, and Densmore, who added a very classy, refined drive to all the songs.
wow! you can really hear right from the start that they were different - that kinda sound in 1965?? amazing that this hasn't been made public all these year til now!
"Hyacinth House" not formally recorded some six years and a half years later, amazing !! No, Robbie shows much he was an essential part of The Doors alchemy !
Actually this version of Hyacinth House does not belong to the 1965 demo session for Aura Records like the other six songs. It is a demo coming from the Morrison Hotel sessions, so it must be recorded around late 1969.
@@diegoferreiro9478 Thanks, I was hoping someone had some info on this. So much of the Doors sucess was Jim finding his voice and the delineation between this set of recordings seems to express this
@@garybalranald6323 i think thats just the D chord on acoustic. Pocahontas is an interesting story by the way, not at all like fiction. Pocahontas was one of the first in her area to convert to Christianity and is buried in England.
Jim's vocals are fantastic and raw on these tracks and Ray's background tracks fit well also. This shows just how much the blues influenced their music. This is a very vintage sound and such a treasure. Who is playing harmonica? Thanks for sharing these!!
Robby Krieger is not with the band, yet, on these demos. Ray's brothers, Jim and Ron add the harmonica and guitar parts, and Patty Sullivan plays bass. Jim, John and Ray make up the Doors, at this time. The Manzarek brothers left the band in Nov, 1965, and Robby stepped in shortly after.
Jim Manzarek played the mouth harp and Patty Sullivan played the bass guitar. It really sounds raw and in my opinion it’s no surprise that no labels were interested in the Doors- outside of a half-assed contract with Columbia Records. Jim’s rich baritone voice had not yet developed and Robby Kreiger had not been invited to join the group.
Ive been collecting The Doors since the 70s on vinyl. In the 80s came Napster. My Doors live collection is HUGE as well as other oddities. Have to check if this is in there. This is great stuff. Went to Paris after Jim passed. I have pics laying on his grave. Some big American came over, and i thought he was upset, but he was like, ' Thats so cool man, Jim would have loved that! Jim would have dug thatman!' It was an experience!
I REALLY wish I could have heard this when I was just getting into the Doors, back in the late 80's, dropping acid, Jimi Hendrix Zeppelin days! 30 plus years of my Evolution would have been Drastically changed! Damn.

Replaced the harmonica player with Robby Krieger...the rest is history.
Crazy that this is as far from the present as a recording from 1905 would have been from these guys
Tranquility and so genuine!!!The Lizard King and The Boys!! Supernatural
You can hear the greatness.
this sounds incredible
Thanks for sharing! My Birthday gift 🎁 first time I am listening to this demo wow !!!
Never heard this till last nite ...freaking crazy...love how he hasn't found his true voice yet .
You can hear the importance of a good producer, like Paul Rothchild.
According to Wikipedia this is Rick & The Ravens demo - the group became The Doors when Jim & Rick Manczarek (original spelling) quit when the demo yielded no traction and Robbie Krieger joined the band.
The music of my people
Es el mejor sonido de The Doors que he escuchado, una delicia!
I don't really even like the Doors but...this is great. Yeah, it's bare bones garage punk music but it's (in my opinion) some of the best of that era. Damn, no wonder they became all time legends. This is really really great.
Looney tunes comment. Poor recording quality does not a punk record make.
The early beginnings of the band . Thanks for the upload.
Really like the energy and garage sounds of the band here. They are missing Robbie, though. Some raucous guitar playing would have really made these tunes shine. Fun stuff.
Damn.
Without a guitarist.
Beautiful.
I think what you're trying to refer to is called _"jazz"_
WOW!!! No....(NO!!!)..... psychedelics needed or required to be blown away by this!!!! (Dont even need fine wine or the smoothest Tennessee Whiskey!)😳😳😃🤯😉)
Thanks for sharing this!! (Given my "bromance" with Jim/"Jimbo", ((and even the rest of the Doors)), I would be curious if it was HIM to suggest that this music remain hidden from so many for all this time!! If so, what other wonders await us Doors/Jim/"Jimbo" fans??????
No drugs or drink is needed to enjoy anything in life
@@agentstanley29 You're right.
I didn't even know these demos existed. A softer sound, as it doesn't have a guitar, but it's always good to hear "new" things from the Doors.
me too, probably AI thing... the voice is hard to believe is from Jimbo
Wow! I had no idea this existed. I agree with many of you that Robby would later contribute highly to the band. Thanks so much for the post.
This sounds like very mid-sixties pop music with some beatnik bongos. Amazing how they transitioned these songs to something more psychedelic / rock. Songs like Hiacynth House are an amazing transformation.
I was thinking the same thing .So, mid beatnick. Feels like they're holding back the primal ! In a few years later... Boom
Santo TH-cam. Isso seria impossível há anos atrás...demos de bandas, discos perdidos, nem tudo é ruim no mundo hoje..
I never realized that Hyacinth House was written so early. Awesome!
This demo of Hyacinth house was recorded much later.
I feel lucky today. Thank you for sharing!
Strange but beautiful.
How would you label this sound? Blues?
@@2degucitas stoned immaculate
"Hyacinth House" not formally recorded some six years and a half years later, amazing !! No, Robbie shows much he was an essential part of The Doors alchemy !
Not six, but five years later, in november-december 1970 (period of L.A. Woman sessions).
So much of the Doors sucess was Jim finding his voice and the delineation between this set of recordings seems to express this
Opening chords sound a bit like Neil Young's Pocahontas.
@@garybalranald6323 i think thats just the D chord on acoustic.
Pocahontas is an interesting story by the way, not at all like fiction.
Pocahontas was one of the first in her area to convert to Christianity and is buried in England.
Really Good Early Doors Recordings 🌟 🌟
Awesome. This is absolutely amazing.
Jim's vocals are fantastic and raw on these tracks and Ray's background tracks fit well also. This shows just how much the blues influenced their music. This is a very vintage sound and such a treasure. Who is playing harmonica? Thanks for sharing these!!
i guess it's Ray's brother, jim according to some interview of Ray.
These guy are always great
Never heard these before. You tube is doing good to find some of these true artist.
FANTASTIC!!!
Muito bom , essa gravação esta diferente , nunca tinha escutado .... parabéns
From 9/2/65 at World Pacific Studios Los Angeles
Napster is 90s?
Idols! 🙄
@@erickh6587 Yeah my memory isn't what it used to be! LOL. You are correct.
This is really interesting, works in progress.
Very interesting! Thanks for sharing.
Nice Quality! Thanks for
This is fantastic
claro.

Awesome Share Thank you 🎉🎉🎉
I thoroughly enjoyed this, thank you much!
The influence of the r&b garage-punk assault of Van Morrison and Them is particularly apparent on “Go Insane”!..
Perdón por comentar un sitio común, una verdad de perogrullo: En realidad esta grabación es un gran documento histórico.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏!!
i love the first steps of any band
"He's a changeling....Hear him/them CHAAAAANGE.......!"😳😃🤯
I REALLY wish I could have heard this when I was just getting into the Doors, back in the late 80's, dropping acid, Jimi Hendrix Zeppelin days! 30 plus years of my Evolution would have been Drastically changed! Damn.
Well, skin an ancient snake, or spit in your own beer ... that's how the bear bites butt, Bud.
The late 80s. That's funny.
@@BlueBeeMCMLXI Say what?
@@KaiserBlade A day late and a dollar short, eh? Well, my parents were doing the same thing in the late 60's/ early 70's... apples and trees.

Sweet 👏 love the Doors ✌️👍
Grazie per questo documento sconosciuto ai più.Grazie!
Incredible! I love it.....the demos on Essential Rarities are also very good!
