From a guitarist/historian's perspective, this is actually an incredible piece of footage. If I'm seeing right, JP is playing his legendary Telecaster that he would've acquired about a year before this performance from Jeff Beck. For those who don't know, this telecaster would go on to record the entirety of Zep I, as well as the timeless solo on "Stairway to Heaven". Jimmy heavily modified this guitar over the late 60's, as it appeared in multiple forms throughout his early career with the Yardbirds, and then subsequently in Led Zeppelin. Based off the dates and appearances here, this concert would prove to be a transitional period for this guitar, as this would be post-circular reflective mirrors, but pre-dragon paint, plus it still retains its original white finish. The pick-guard looks to already have its reflective surface underneath it, clearly setting the stage for what would be more creative inspiration for JP to strip the finish and paint the dragon. Starting at 10:40 we get a wonderful close-up view of the guitar, reflective pick-guard, sans-mirrors. Very few photos/videos exist of the mirrored-version of the guitar, I'm not sure I've ever seen photo/video evidence of the transitional era between mirrors and dragon artwork. This, to me, is quite profound. We're witnessing arguably the most legendary, recognizable guitar, in its creative embryonic stages, preparing itself to become one with music history. Hope I'm not the only one that recognizes this.
The legendary Telecaster is playing here was used on the 1st Led Zeppelin but then Jimmy lent it to someone who Fd it up by making modifications and its mojo was basically ruined. It was not used in Stairway to Heaven
Jimmy is thinking: "I know a session guy who is great on bass, and a couple of guys from up north who sing and play drums in some band. I'm ready for a change. Maybe I'll invite the three of them over to my house boat at Pangbourne to routine some tunes and see what happens......."
Jimmy actually extended an invitation to Chris Dreja, the Yardbirds' bass player, to pay bass on the new band Jimmy was forming. Chris declined, saying he wanted to become a professional photographer. Jimmy then invited John Paul Jones to join, and Jonesy accepted. The photo on the back cover of Led Zeppelin I was taken by Dreja. The rest is history.

I have everything they've ever done. Latest pickup was the live Anderson Theater session. I always thought that Relf's shortcomings as a singer was the reason they weren't huge.
Of course, Page's ideas and playing style would be there in whatever band he's played with. He wrote and performed an early version of Dazed and Confused with the Yardbirds, and led Zeppelin's original name was the New Yardbirds.
This was a show on 4/30/67. Yet I've seen live footage of the Yardbirds from 1/67 where jimmy Page had added the reflector stickers to that beautiful Telecaster.

I absolutely LOVED Shapes Of Things. A great studio recording. Keith Relf in this live performance is unbelievably bad, but Jimmy’s guitar is all there. I get the impression Keith was just a pretty face. I can’t recall ever seeing him perform well.
Relf was a decent vocalist and frontman in the Clapton and Beck eras, but not only did he have respiratory issues throughout his life, but had a drinking problem at the end of the Yardbirds (1966-68). After the Yardbirds broke up in '68, his vocal work became much better with Renaissance.
fairs fair though… its 1967 and there are no fold back speakers on stage. he wouldn’t even be able to hear himself singing with all those Vox amps cranked
He was of his time and was in very good company as Jeff Beck,Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix,Mike Bloomfield and Randy California also were active during 1967.
Page was of his time. What seemed “ahead of his time” was mostly taken from Beck’s previous treatment of these songs, without Beck’s inimitable touch ~
If anybody's interested, here's a transcription/translation of everything that goes on after the PA troubles following the first song: Relf: "One minute! Can you hear the group singing? Can you hear me singing?" then, in French, "non chante"--roughly, "no singing?". Then "engineer" with a French pronunciation (not *quite* "ingénieur", which is the right word)... [Then hard-to-make-out banter between band members ("is it working all right?")...] Relf: "Nous désirons, euh, un ingéneer." [literally, "we desire an engineer"; "we would like an engineer"] Guy (seems to be the host/presenter) speaking French, which I can't make out, then he says "What is your problem?" Relf: "Uh, just like, the, voice is just not loud enough, y'know?" Presenter: "Ah bon? Eh bien la mienne non plus d'ailleurs, vous pouvez monter, s'il vous plait? Non, il y a un problème, c'est que, il voudrait que sa voix soit un peu plus forte, hein?" [murmurs of appreciation from crowd] Vous êtes d'accord? Est-ce qu'il a raison? [crowd louder] [Really? Well, mine isn't either, in fact; can you turn it up, please? No, there's a problem; it's that he'd like his voice to be a little stronger, eh? Do you agree? Is he right?] Relf: "Yeah! Right, y'know." Presenter: "Bon, vous nous aidez? Comme ça on va faire du bon travail." [Right, you'll help us? That way, we'll do a good job.] Relf: "So we'll wait till the, uh, establishment fixes a... new... PA sound." Presenter: "Ben, voilà. ... ... Est-ce que ça va s'arranger? Je ne sais pas. Pierre Laozic[?], vous êtes là? [Well, there you go. ... Right, a sound engineer, please, I dunno, to come fix the situation, because monsieur is having some problems. And I can't do anything for him! I'll just translate, if I can. ... Nobody? What do we do, in that case? I can recite the Iliad for you, the Odyssey; what would you like? One of La Fontaine's Fables, perhaps. ... Ah, it's going to be sorted straight away. ... Yeah, he's having problems. Sound engineering is hard. He's having problems, because his amplifier is "snoring" [buzzing] and his voice isn't loud enough. ... Is it going to be sorted? I don't know. Pierre Laozic[?], are you there?] Relf: Uh, c'est non engineer, pas, y'know-- [Uh, it's not engineer, not, y'know--] [tape cuts, then resumes with Train Kept A Rollin']
I do hope that somewhere there is a better copy of this video as the audio is subpar but otherwise I'll take what I can get.The Yardbirds are a favorite band of mine.
People refer naively to as "audio quality"is actually digital post-processing - and pitch correction among other things. Basically cheating, In this performance Relfs voice would need a lot of work,
don’t get me wrong, I love Keith Relf and I don’t want to gossip or spread misinformation, but from what I understand he may have been drunk at this performance. there’s another upload on TH-cam of this performance and the comment section is full of people pointing out that he had a drinking problem back then and it was highly likely he had been drinking that day. whether it’s true or not, he was a wonderfully talented musician and front man. Rest in peace, Keith ⚡️♥️⚡️
Keith Relf being drunk would not be a new thing. It was him being drunk and insulting the audience at a major university gig that prompted bassist/producer Paul Samwell-Smith to quit the band. Fortunately, Jeff Beck had invited his friend Jimmy Page to that gig, and Jimmy offered to take over bass duties. Also, Relf was an asthmatic who had breathing problems. One can assume that treatment in the 60s wasn't what it is today (i.e., inhalers etc.), so it is very possible he self-medicated with non medicinal meds of the day.
The drugs would have killed him anyway . I'm just guessing he was abusing drugs simply by his demeaner ' . The 1960's was a tragic time to be a rock musician '
On the one day when the weather was fine in Chaville, they could have paid for a sound engineer to give Page a chance to be heard over Keith. That's the story of Rock in France.🤣
No one had an inkling that Page would become a demi-god or all recordings would have gone very different, but they didn't have much to work with in '67.
I know Page is playing Beck’s parts here, but nevertheless this was during the period when their styles were very similar. A couple years later they diverged stylistically for the rest of their lives.

Из говна развилось целое направление. Спасибо Джимми и Джефу (RIP).
Me too I was a full blown rock music fan at 9 years old
Page's Tele thru that Vox amp sounds awesome :) 🎸☕
Saw them at the Marquee in 64 - I can remember the floor was so sticky you couldn't dance even if you wanted to?!!!
one of the coolest things ever.
I have everything they've ever done. Latest pickup was the live Anderson Theater session. I always thought that Relf's shortcomings as a singer was the reason they weren't huge.
Boy oh!! Boy you know who the star is here!!!!!
YOU CAN HEAR SOME ZEPPELIN IN PAGE'S PLAYING.
They were starting to lapse into Led Zeppelin shame
Of course, Page's ideas and playing style would be there in whatever band he's played with. He wrote and performed an early version of Dazed and Confused with the Yardbirds, and led Zeppelin's original name was the New Yardbirds.
@ronaldkoch2766 ''Dazed and Confused' was written by Jake Holmes.
@@matthewtaylor7355 Meaning what, exactly?
Thanks !!!
Shows you can't make a super group with just one super talented guy. You need four of them.😂
The Yarber were a supergroup
Thank you for sharing this, Mark Zep! 😊👍
Rare footage of Page playing his Telecaster just before he painted it and also his Vox 12 string......!!
This was a show on 4/30/67. Yet I've seen live footage of the Yardbirds from 1/67 where jimmy Page had added the reflector stickers to that beautiful Telecaster.
First time ever to see a Vox in Page arsenal. So awesome👏
So wild when they show the audience, all the men in suit & ties!
The telecaster probably the quintessential country guitar of choice for many. When I think of a Tele I think of Page, Beck and Prince. oh and not forgeting Wilco.
I think of Page , Roy Buchanan, Keith Richards
@@PlayerToBeNamedLater1973 I nearly mentioned Roy . ah yes Keith.
@@paulwoodward6555 Roy sure got a beautiful tone out of that Tele. Keith's sound was unique because he used that open G tuning . I've heard that most of the guitar on the first 2 Led Zeppelin albums were this same Telecaster and that surprised me.
Not to belabor the point, but I think of James Burton and Steve Cropper.
@@rmick66 Having never seen James burton only heard I did not realise he was a Tele player.
Great Raw Footage. Priceless, Great to see 140 thousand views!!
And three of the greatest guitarists all in one band!!!
Three best ever to walk this planet. Never ever be anyone better.thats a fact.
Keith should be singing "Mister you're a better SINGER than I" to literally anybody.
haha. So true. I can t stand listenin to him.
Pagey is not great on this either, if you're paying attention...
I think he may not have been able to hear himself. That can make it hard to sing in tune. The sound system doesn't seem very good
Jimmy sounds great, Keith is very drunk
He doesn't sound very good, but then I 'd hate to be judged for something I did for 1 hour, 858 years ago. Compared to everything going on around him, Page shines and they all know it, funny how they watch him solo : Awe. Needs more guitar solos.
You can hear the experimentations jimmy loved the group and wanted to play this type of music
Chris Dreja is the most un-sung man in rock and roll. I’ve seen him on TH-cam in videos on rhythm guitar, maracas, he’s here on bass, co-wrote Ten Years Happening Time Ago, whatever they needed he did it. A little respect, please.
way. cool. thanks
Thanks Mark! 😜👍
I idolize jimmy page, but I would love to know how he plays that 12 string with a scarf over the strings and don't miss a beat.
Wow thanx- I've never seen this before. And it appears almost 60 years later!!! The 12 string guitar Pagey is using on " My Baby"- I recognized from " Jimmy Page Anthology" book 2020 ( UPDATE- ON PAGE 60. CALLED A VOX XII he used it on FIFTH AVENUES " Bells of Rhymney" session
What is that 12 string guitar? I've never noticed it before!
Mattlog..... It's a VOX XII 12 string
oh man i love youtube...what a testament! thank you Mark Zep!
The camera editors seem to be a tad reluctant to show Jimmy playing. Not the first time I've noticed this from footage of this era. Still so glad to have this at all. Thanks for posting.
@alanosterman7130 *It seems, back then, lots of camera operators simply didn't know how to shoot a rock concert. The Bath Festival footage of Led Zeppelin is good, but no one recorded the music, they just filmed it. The Bath Festival clips are up here at YT.*
@@VladDImpala Yes, I think there are rumors that Jimmy Page (who just turned 80 yesterday), is working on the bath festival footage, and maybe syncing up the bootleg recording with the available footage, for a documentary. Hope so. Those camera men show too much of Bonzo's drumming, and then they cut to Robert's flashy boots too much. Then too much of the faces of the people watching them.
@@VladDImpala l often think some of them did not have a clue as to who was playing what,You often see a zoom in on a bass guitar when someone is playing the lead guitar solo on some of these 60,s concerts !
@@philipbrougham6360 *How true! I used to shoot concerts, so I know when and what to shoot. Concert photography, and filming concerts, is very much like sports photography, you have to know exactly what 'moment' is important to capture.*
@@VladDImpala l think now days it is much better and most people given the job of filming a concert would have some idea of who is playing which instrument and when to zoom in at the right time ..
Even then Page was a master showman 🤔👏👍
Was feeling a little down today. Seeing NEW live footage of Jimmy changed that.
I'll take this over lip synch til I die
Autotune can F--- off.
Jimmy on incredible form as we have come to expect. Hats off to the camera man for being in the wrong place at the right time 😂
Jimmy ❤
Thanks for this
All the critiques are better than the original Yardbirds One of the best 60s bands ever No clip on tuners No modern monitors or engineers Just vibes heart groove soul and talent
just Keith Relf and his rawk n roll fantasy
Keith is often singing out of key and struggling to hit the right note. Is he drunk?
no, he just wasn't a singer, he was the friend of the manager, there are NO keith relf fans@@Unit8200-rl8ev
This has major vibe all over it..
👍👍
Anyone interested, Keith is buried in Richmond, Surrey.
Thanks man way cool❤😎🎵🎵
Wow...This is amazing just to see this Yardbirds video appearance surface after nearly 50 years...Like some of the sound quality of their live videos,it suffers from a bad mix...
I can hear why Page wanted another lead singer.
Relf was worn out after years of the same set and endless touring
@@garthkolbeck8674 *Didn't Keith Relf have serious health issues? IIRC, lung and breathing problems.*
@@VladDImpala yes, I think he basically had one good lung from a childhood illness
When Keith drank too much his voice went out. Also he was usually singing to get above the volume and that never sounds good
Page actually wanted Terry Reid, but settle for Robert Plant.
One of my favorite bands of all time and one of the most influential too!!
une relic ,un collector .
It's a wonder that this film exists at all... the camraman shure didn't have an eye or ear for the real talent in the band. Though i do lke the video... ty for the upload !!!! ❤
Live set…thanks 😊
Keith is struggling here and it doesn’t help that there are no monitors to let him know he is singing off- key.
Yeah, it's rare to see him this wasted and off-key. Wasn't rare in real life, just rare in documentary terms.
Jagger,Burden, Redding, Elvis, Charles, the two Morrison's etc... a decent singer can really extend the shelf life of any rock band.
@@coldacre The impression I have is exactly that, Keith Relf wasn't hearing himself well, it's not possible
They could have greatly benefitted from modern tech, such as In-Ear-Monitors.
He is singing so off-key here.
Wow… Now I remember ♥️♥️♥️♥️🎶🌺🎩🌹🦋
Although he starts a “bit off key”, Relf was a reeeally good frontman. Easy to see how Jimmy was already leading the band by this time. Great footage!
You beat me to it! REALLY off key.
Hopeless singer and laughable front man. Imagine the Yardies with a Stewart or Reid or Plant or Marrriot
This is the great Yardbirds. Loved Keith doing Dylan "Most likely to Go Your Way" at the end. No guitar smashing is fine with me.
And you actually think these are good vocals ?
@@AMEER-114- No. Keith needs great studio production.
@@AMEER-114- They're good. It's live.
That lead guitar player was way ahead of his time..❤
He was of his time and was in very good company as Jeff Beck,Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix,Mike Bloomfield and Randy California also were active during 1967.
Page was of his time. What seemed “ahead of his time” was mostly taken from Beck’s previous treatment of these songs, without Beck’s inimitable touch ~
~ Beck is STILL ahead of his time👌

If anybody's interested, here's a transcription/translation of everything that goes on after the PA troubles following the first song:
Relf: "One minute! Can you hear the group singing? Can you hear me singing?" then, in French, "non chante"--roughly, "no singing?". Then "engineer" with a French pronunciation (not *quite* "ingénieur", which is the right word)...
[Then hard-to-make-out banter between band members ("is it working all right?")...]
Relf: "Nous désirons, euh, un ingéneer."
[literally, "we desire an engineer"; "we would like an engineer"]
Guy (seems to be the host/presenter) speaking French, which I can't make out, then he says "What is your problem?"
Relf: "Uh, just like, the, voice is just not loud enough, y'know?"
Presenter: "Ah bon? Eh bien la mienne non plus d'ailleurs, vous pouvez monter, s'il vous plait? Non, il y a un problème, c'est que, il voudrait que sa voix soit un peu plus forte, hein?" [murmurs of appreciation from crowd] Vous êtes d'accord? Est-ce qu'il a raison? [crowd louder]
[Really? Well, mine isn't either, in fact; can you turn it up, please? No, there's a problem; it's that he'd like his voice to be a little stronger, eh? Do you agree? Is he right?]
Relf: "Yeah! Right, y'know."
Presenter: "Bon, vous nous aidez? Comme ça on va faire du bon travail."
[Right, you'll help us? That way, we'll do a good job.]
Relf: "So we'll wait till the, uh, establishment fixes a... new... PA sound."
Presenter: "Ben, voilà. ...
Pierre Laozic[?], are you there?]
Relf: Uh, c'est non engineer, pas, y'know--
[Uh, it's not engineer, not, y'know--]
[tape cuts, then resumes with Train Kept A Rollin']
Clearly they were looking for Roger the engineer
I guess if you can't hear yourself you can't sing. Either that or Relf is fucked up.
Wow! Kieth sounds out of it
flat as hell.
I do hope that somewhere there is a better copy of this video as the audio is subpar but otherwise I'll take what I can get.The Yardbirds are a favorite band of mine.

Bilingual!!!! Wow!
don’t get me wrong, I love Keith Relf and I don’t want to gossip or spread misinformation, but from what I understand he may have been drunk at this performance.
there’s another upload on TH-cam of this performance and the comment section is full of people pointing out that he had a drinking problem back then and it was highly likely he had been drinking that day.
whether it’s true or not, he was a wonderfully talented musician and front man.
Rest in peace, Keith

Been tripping on acid for days
Due to a rapid tolerance that builds up you can't "trip on acid for days", unless you take massive doses.
Oh come on next you'll tell us that rock and roll stars were drug users who had sex with women they weren't married to
so what, who doesn't get pissed when they go to France?
Keith Relf being drunk would not be a new thing. It was him being drunk and insulting the audience at a major university gig that prompted bassist/producer Paul Samwell-Smith to quit the band. Fortunately, Jeff Beck had invited his friend Jimmy Page to that gig, and Jimmy offered to take over bass duties.
Also, Relf was an asthmatic who had breathing problems. One can assume that treatment in the 60s wasn't what it is today (i.e., inhalers etc.), so it is very possible he self-medicated with non medicinal meds of the day.
i saw the yardbirds in san jose fairgrounds 1967
Man, Jimmy outgrew these guys quick

No one had an inkling that Page would become a demi-god or all recordings would have gone very different, but they didn't have much to work with in '67.

I know Page is playing Beck’s parts here, but nevertheless this was during the period when their styles were very similar. A couple years later they diverged stylistically for the rest of their lives.
