The only piece of media that I've ever seen do a "Monkey's Paw" story correctly is Fairly Odd Parents. Everything is solved in the end by getting a lawyer to write the wish. The real antagonist in these stories is the main character's own stupidity.

CLAMP's XXXHolic had a fantastic Monkey's Paw chapter. The entire series is based on "a shop where a Witch grants you wishes in exchange of something of equal value"
In plenty of instances, the wishes themselves don't cause harm. It's the people who refuse to change their horrible personalities or habits and refuse to listen to reason.
In one chapter, Yuko meets with a woman whose wish is to get rid of her addiction to her pc because she's neglecting her husband and child.
Yuko ends up destroying her pc and taking her baby's highchair as payment. Yuko does have the power to get rid of her addiction, but the price to pay is much higher since her pc was a material thing, whilst her addiction is a part of her.
TLDR it's extremely heavily implied that had Yuko gotten rid of her addiction, the price to pay would have been her baby.

I love how the reveal of the mom having used the box is treated as though that makes the mom a terrible person, even though we have no idea what wishes she made or how long she had it, whereas Clare, our protagonist, we do know has been selfishly and irresponsibly misusing the box for the entire movie.
For all we know, Clare would have died but her mum used a wish to bring her back to life. Etc etc.
It didn't really make sense. Like, the dad found the box outside the burned house of the guy who had previously used it, but then apparently the mother had also used it at one point. So the owner of the house used it, threw it away, the mom found it, used it, and then somehow it made it back into the trash outside the house? Honestly, the fact her mom used it didn't really contribute to the plot anyway. Like it would've worked just as well if the mom had just committed suicide for some other reason.
Ok but hear me out:
Why didn't the mom or her wish the box never even existed. There's no rule against that now is there?

It still happens though. Some of them have video available online. They can be disturbing though. I saw one when the elevator failed as a lady was stepping on. She was caught between the falling elevator and the floor and basically cut in half.

Okay so legit my Dad goes dumpster diving every other day, we have plenty of money but we have a bunch of animals, chickens, ducks, goats, and sometimes a pig that we feed to butcher. The grocery store near us throws out a ton of stuff because its technically at or near expiration. Theres almost always a ton of bread and other produce that imo looks fine, we feed it to the animals. Not gunna lie occasionally we get stuff that ill even eat, they threw out 24 cases of protein bars. The trash behind something like a restaurant is nasty af but a grocery store is clean, the food is almost always still fully packaged or in cases. We wouldnt take it if it was gross. Lowkey i recommend its fun, like thrifting but better. Also got some electronics like a dehydrator (dry fruits or make jerky), a lamp, and vacuum still in the box.
