Just picked this one up an hr ago, recently got back into "anime" fighters and have been brushing up with Dbfz until I saw the Evo trailer for this lol
This is by far one of the best guides for a fighting game I've seen. Can't tell you how refreshing it is to have all this valuable information conveyed so clearly and quickly. Much appreciated!

Thank you Brendan, I'm a new GG player, I just bought it yesterday. I came from Street Fighter series and Super Smash Bros Ultimate and I wanted to try an anime fighter. This is the best guide I've found so far. Subscribing right now! :D
This guide is unreal. I'm just picking up guilty gear for the first time today and this video is the holy grail. I've been playing melee for years and have never seen a tutorial set that explains fundamentals so well. Thanks dude
I expect this guide to blow up with the 2020 GG announced at EVO last week. As a fan of only a few years im so excited to be able of a brand new GG experience when it comes. Thanks for the guide. Ill also practice on Accent Core + R on the Switch/PC as well as my own copy of Rev 2. GG > BB for life!
As someone who has only recently gotten into fighting games, I find your tutorials incredibly useful. Your teaching style is very clear and easy to follow. You really deserve more views! I'd also urge everyone to go watch your live coaching vids!
Im new into fighting games and i recently bought GG Rev2. I play character action games a lot so i wasnt new to concepts such as cancels, combos and such. After i finished the tutorials, i was fairly alright at the game, and then i joined an online lobby to test my skills at the game, and then i experienced what i would call "being an npc in the DBZ world, watching 2 characters fight so fast that u cant even see what is going on". After they finished, one of them told me that it is my turn. I immediately apologized and said that i wasnt cut out for this shit and pressed ALT + F4, I think sticking to the story mode and training is enough for me until the new GG comes out XD.
It may be a year old, but thank you for these guides! I got the game yesterday, and it’s super intimidating, but you explain things in a really concise and easy to understand way.
6:55 “Tension is really interesting because tension- Yeah fuck you ky... ...so uh tension-“ That’s my absolute favorite part. But now looking at this....I could have had a lot of fun learning the game with everyone else when it first came out...
I bought this game yesterday after watching some reviews. It’s a gorgeous game but I’ve only played a little of the tutorial. After watching five minutes of this first part, I’ve added the whole series to my FG list. Your explanations of the chain and tension systems are amazing. Thank you so much! Edit: 12:18 “That’s such a fuckin weird thing to say.” Lol!
@@Jorge-hn1ye Agreed, but I swear every character I choose has to be the most difficult. Trying to main Baiken, I-No and Chipp. Then again it's a fighting game, the coolest looking characters are either the easiest or the hardest. ;-;
@@slyswiper4150 I played Xrd for about 3 months and played a little xx accent core +r I mostly did this to adjust to all the system mechanics and to feel how the game is played. @@cobaltghost34 I also mean like getting used to the buttons and inputs since I have been playing fighterz for a while but just don’t got any other fighting game experience so I’m wondering if inputs will be hard cuz that is the only problem on my mind
Thanks so much for this video! It feels a bit difficult to find videos that are useful to an absolute beginner like me, but you explained it really well and I feel like I learned something.
This is such a wonderful, detailed guide that helped me understand GG better than any guide I've seen. The biggest bummer for me with GG is the notation. I don't think the number pad is justifiably better than directional notation. I shouldn't have to transpose notation in a fighter ever. Back, downback, forward (or b, db, f) etc. is far, far better. The numpad only works when you're in left, and using it gets really jumbled when your on 2p side (player, not punch (another confusing thing about the numpad)). All in all, thank you for the incredible video!
Player two is often reffered to as p2 not 2p Also numbpad notation really smooths things out when talking about more intricate motions And has uses outside of motion inputs Its not inherently better or worse as it has advantages and downsides to regular notation
I just started playing fighting games as well the learning curve is huge and I still lose to easy bots sometimes but I’m having fun just need to find a character I like
@@StephGoKrazy Yeah. The golden rule of fighting games is to always be ready to lose and relearn what you thought you have mastered. I think a lot of people stop playing them because the learning curve is insane. Although they are an incredibly rewarding experience in the long run.
@@StephGoKrazy They are definitely unique games to me at least. Despite many titles, the overall experience is something beautiful. I play together with friends trying to hone our skills as we fight again and again. It's not the same as in shooters and mobas, since every mistake leading to a loss, is mine alone and not because of a team.
This video is great. I feel like what makes people so intimidated with getting into fighters like this is how so many guides assume people already know their way around the game. There are “basics” guides that jump right into lists of abbreviations that mean absolutely nothing to someone who is just starting out.
This is a really great guide!! Bought the game last summer, but the mechanics and speed of the game were a little more complex then I was used to at the time. Your guide defenitely made things more clearer and I'm going to try out what I've learned soon!

Thanks Poro! So honestly it doesn't matter what you use. I'll actually make a video about it since you brought it up, but I recommend whatever is most comfortable for you. I've seen pad players, stick players, and keyboard players do very well. I prefer stick because with a pad you have to use a different pad as different consoles are introduced. A stick is always the same
I tried to get into revelator 2, but between the smaller player base and the difficulty of it in general( coupled with the fact that all i ended up wanting to do was impractical dragon install combos in training mode) I never really got into it. But with the new one coming out i’m hoping to actually put some time into it, so here goes
thanks! i dont typically play fighting games so ppl on discord hate on me. Ive never played a fighting game not on roblox that is like this cause of cost. thanks for this tutorial!
That 2k, 5k shyt is confusing. I’m coming from MK11, Dragonball FighterZ, and SF... I have to translate it to down forward or quarter circle forward movement
The number pad notation is always read as if you're on player 1 side no matter what. Just pretend your analog stick or arcade stick is a numpad on a computer. It takes time to memorize, but with repetition it'll stick.
Do you have to specify if youre talking p1 or p2 position when doing combo notation? 4 is forward for p2 and back for p1... this is why other fighting games just use d, d/f, f etc for directional notation
Good question, you always say notation as if you're p1 even if you're on p2 side. So 6 means forward no matter what and 4 will always mean back. Hope that helps, if you have any more questions or wanna play join our brand new discord! discord.gg/XATQ6bX

Sorry for the late reply; I’m not too far into Guilty Gear but I can confirm that it’s totally okay to play with pad on this game! I’ve also heard pad players map their buttons though to their preference; although I think Johnny and Zato-1 are two characters that benefit a lot from playing on a arcade fighting stick. I have Revelator, is it worth the upgrade to Rev 2? Are there a lot of differences?
Yeah absolutely, balance changes, new mechanics, 2 new characters, and the whole online playerbase lol
Is this game still active online please?
It's more active on PS4 than PC, but I can help you find people to play with. Do you play on PC or PS4?
@@BigALBoomer haha no problem, so I would recommend buying on PS4 as that's more active. I've created a discord community (link in description), it's mostly Guilty Gear players looking to learn the game in preparation for the new one. I'm sure they and myself would be willing to play with you!.
Tha Likely Lad I played the game for a straight 5 hours with people consistently joining my player match lobby so for now it seems like this game has been revived on PS4
There's still ppl on, not alot though. Most players I seen online in player match was like 120.
for future refrence. timestamps would be nice
Thanks, I'll do that next time for sure.
This is the weirdest fighting game I've ever played the controls are just plain goofy.
