Excellent information. I went with the A7SII for videography - although it kinda hurts to give up some of the photography benefits of the A7RII, the pics are still nice on the A7SII.
Millionaire Hoy Canon T6S or 80d or this sony a7ssi Or a7rii ? wanna be able to be a TH-cam blogger , take good pics of cars , nature and people , dealerships. Let me know anyone everyone's feedback is welcome.
it depends on the lens. the autofokus is usefull 4 videos. not 4 fast fokusing. if you want very fast fokus, use canoncams. the a7s2 is very great 4 videos.
I owned Both, I Prefer the A7sII and sold my R2, The ISO performance is what sealed the deal. The R2 is great for stills and set up shoots, But for weddings, party's, Barmitzvahs ect. The low light a7s2 allows me to shoot noise free in some of the darkest environments around. Ive had extremely usable shots at 100k iso. Also For my work, 12mp will still produce the largest deliverable I will do. I might Pick up a r2 again in the near future. But I will wait it out a bit. Sony still needs a Good Sports Cam, Honestly they should make a pro version of the a6000 with its 11fps

Good information here. I took my A7Rii out last night and took some video in a park lit only by Christmas lights, albeit billions of them, and I never would have thought that 12,800 ISO wouldn't be good enough but it wasn't. I would have loved to have an A7Sii that night. Though I must say the image was clean and it still looked like night time as opposed to that 'day for night' look. Just to experiment, I cranked it up to 25,000 ISO and aside from the noise, the amount of light was perfect.
well done michael. good review! would u plz help me on this. which camera is more sharper on 100 iso. a7sii ff 4k or a7rii s35 mode 4k as it has no anti aliasing filter. just for video footage plz. appreciate
4:09 I love it, I rarely shoot over 1600 ISO low light - given with a Canon 70D not a Sony. Low light capabilities have come a long way since film days. :)
I am in the position of looking to pull the trigger on one or the other and this helped a lot. Still not sure, but have more info to make an informed decision. Thanks!
thanks so much ...it does become quite confusing when you are considering such an investment after you have already invested SO MUCH in other cameras...I have been eying the A7Rii for a while now but with a closet filled with canon lens I hate the idea of not being able to se these any longer...thanks for making it easier for me Michael to decide..thanks for the time to do this for us as well...
Thanks, this has been truly helpful. I want a camera for my shortfilms and the full-frame/120fps/low light capabilities of the A7S II are very tempting. But I also need to take photos to promote my t-shirt brand. These photos will probably be shot in more controlled and lit environments, but the 12 megapixels are not very appealing :/ Any recommendations on what to get?
+Francisco Muñoz I'm in the same spot. I really wanted the a7sII for films which I'm more into then photos but I do find myself taking a lot of photos too. I think I'm still going to go with the a7sII as I shoot 80% of the time at night or in very low light and the 12 megapixels with have to do. I'll also probably keep my cheap Canon t2i just in case I need something with a little higher megapixels.
@@rybug15 3 years later i do not know what to buy. I must buy something in next month, A7S III is not here, A7S II is 3 years old. I use camera 50/50. This is so hard decision. Mybe another brand. Help. Thanks. Check my kanal and videos. :)
Well done, exactly what I wanted to know. Have the A6000, quite an upgrade to the A7Rii. Awesome camera though. Hard to justify the price, for amateur use however.
Great, completely unbiased review. As much as I want to try the A7R III, I don't have the extra money at the moment. Both the A7s II and A7r II share the same price point right now and I was looking for something like this to give me a good comparison. Thanks!
Hey Michael! Huge fan I been watching you for 2 years now and I want to know if you could do a epic shootout on either the nikon d610 vs nikon d750 or the nikon d750 vs nikon d810. Thank you!
I have A7s and use it for video 99% of the time, and im considering upgrading to the A7S II. This comparaison/review was very helpful, thanks for sharing!
+MichaelTheMentor Thanks, they guys at Sony have some things to work on for their next a7s iii :) other then focusing, the features I miss the most are FF and crop HD 120fps and FF and crop 4k
Thanks. For me it is all about video. A7s-2 wins. I really with the AF was as good as the A7R-2 though. When shooting music videos facial detection is paramount.
Very nice review Michael! Can you plese make clear the ISO limit situation in both cameras? In the web there are to many different info. With both cameras in video mode, how is min/max ISO in S-log2/3 or cine4 or others? min/max ISO in crop mode? min/max ISO in 120fps? Any ISO min/max differences shooting 4k or 1080? Difference shooting stills? I think this is something so important and unknown that would deserve a special complete review. Thank you.
I've already posted a video on ISO performance of 120fps, please see my previous video. Both cameras do best when there is no line skipping. 4K Apsc for A7rii, full frame 4K on a7sii. I've also posted an epic shootout on the A7rii- lots of great info there about stills
I got both for the price of one from a camera shop that is closing down. I want the S II for 4k video (it doesn't overheat) and poorly-lit street scenes (it handles low light / high ISO better). The R II is for everything else But I was delighted to hear about the A7R II's APS-C mode. I was mourning having to sell half my large legacy collection of legacy Sony Alpha / Minolta glass, which is APS-C. Now I only have to sell my old Alpha 68.
Hi and thanks ! I am in astrophotography. The choice for the time being has been A7S or D810A. Good results for both. Also aurora videos have been done in live with the A7S. No question about the A7Sii I guess just better than the A7S. But how would perform the A7Rii for astronomy and live videos in the dark ? Could you test shooting or videoing star fields and compare with A7S ? BR
Do you think you can shoot multicam with the S and the R, both full frame without noticeable difference in the footage? Do you think they would cut well?
Thanks for your reply. I'm thinking about buying an A7r ii to add to our 4 cameras a7sii kit but I'm hoping it will cut well with the other cameras. So, you believe that assuming that all settings are set the same, they should have no problems cutting from one to another? You mentioned that the A7r ii does shoot in Slog2. That is "PP7" on the a7sii. Is it also pp7 on the A7r ii? I think that shooting on a slog curve would give the closest look to start grading from, right?
Great review, but I'm just waiting so patiently on the Panasonic GH5! I'm invested in the LUMIX system right now because of the size and weight, and I don't want to jump ship yet but if Panasonic doesn't put in IBIS, 8K sensor (and 4k at 60fps) along with better ISO performance then I may have to jump ship. What are your thoughts on the GH5?
+Major Moves Films I heard it supposedly has 8K, but with all rumors I wait until it is actually released and I can test it. I have a full lineup of 3/4 lenses, so I would be excited for this if it is true
Hi, Michael, your illustration of the two camera is so damn good, it is much better than other folks in showing us which camera to buy! After seeing this video, I now has much better ideas of their difference, thank U so much!
Please also do an Epic Shootout Video of Pentax K-S2 vs D5500 like you have done with D5500 vs T6s/T6i (or a 3 way too !!) They are very close. Thanks.
Nice review, good job! As far as noise performance for stills, you said 7S2 is about one stop better than 7R2. If you downsize the 7R2 stills from 42m to 12m (same resolution as 7S2), would the 7S2 stills have the one stop advantage over 7R2? Or would they be pretty much the same?
Hard to say...much of this is subjective and depends on taste, subject matter and how it is downsized, but for me generally I think a7sii has about 1 stop advantage for stills about about 2 for video, are you ready to give up 30 Mp and excellent focusing for that?
Hi Michael, nice video. I see you are using the Canon 24-70 f4 on the A7rII. Do do like it better than the Sony/Zeiss version on the A7rII? If so, why? Many thanks!
+MichaelTheMentor I'm buying my first camera. I'm a big fan who loves your videos. However, you missed one important question. Are there any differences in image quality in video between the a7s2 vs the a7r2? Thank you
+james cook the a7s2 is better in the ways stated above. There may be some hiccups that will be revealed with more testing, but the a7s2 is a better video camera.
Awesome, fast, clear info. Thanks. But still kinda waiting for classic A7 III. because of enough megapixels, 43 is too much, 12 is too less, so hope A7 will grown up and get at least something from R II.
+Michal Král that is the problem I have. I hope they just put the same tech in each camera. They could even make the next a7s 14 or 16mp and keep the a7 with 24 and even up the a7r to 50mp.
...explains a lot... i rely wanted to be this the camera wich takes the dslr world appart.... but i saw iso raw comparission between the 5ds d810 atrii and differences in noise were negliable... unfortuneatialy :-( just the jpegs look that better because sony has a realy good jpeg algorythem.. probalbly the best
One thing that nobody has reviewed is the noise performance between a7s ii and a7Rii with Metabones speedbooster! If the noise performance difference is 1 stop between rii vs sii and metabones reduces that with 1 stop...wouldn't that make them equals in low light?? I know things don't work out that way in practice. Who would have thought that 5dsr would get better images at 6400 and up compared to a4r. We all heard that 5ds is not so good in low light...well your test prove the opposite...for photographs at least. Hope you demystify the actual performance of these "on paper"unbelievable cameras lol thanks
Michael thanks for the comparison, I have one question, so the A7S MK1 has no moire and the A7SII has moire, this is a big drop down from the original A7S right??
Thank you Michael for a very informative and succinct comparison of the essential attributes that distinguish these cameras, count me as a subscriber. I'd love to say that it has made my decision an easy one, but no, I still agonise over the choice between these amazing cameras. Although I tend to work more with stills (mixed with some video) I'm leaning toward the A7SII since for the most part my stills end up in video presentations and I'm thinking the loss in pixel count shouldn't hurt too much in a 4k output even with some zoom and cropping, but then I think of the faster still frame capture rate and superior auto-focus of the A7RII... and then I think about the superior video features including slow motion, lower native ISO and light capability of the A7SII... A neat deciding factor could be the A7RII's 4K video overheating limitation, but then from what I gather that is not something I'm likely to encounter for the vast majority of my usage scenarios. What a dilemma!
I wanted to buy a Sony A7rii. But then I notice the Sony A99, a cheaper full frame alternative. Can you do a comparison between the outdated Sony A99, Sony A7rii, and Sony A7sii? I really want to save some money. There isn't that many videos comparing anything to the Sony A99. What I've seen so far is when Canon was still on top, Sony's first full frame was overlooked as a serious video camera.
Wonder if a7R II could do ok quality real time video of northern lights with 4k crop mode at ISO 25 600.. that's usually the ISO I had to use with original a7S.. Using a7R II now, but the a7S low light capabilities were just stunning... Gave away the a7S mark one when I swapped to a7R II so wondering if I have to get another to get back that ability to video the aurora instead of just time lapses.
Good video as usual but I'm very disappointed by the A7s ii because i saw if you shoot a face which moving a little too fast, the camera makes a mess in the part that moves. So you can't use it for moving subjects. Are you agree with it MichaelTheMentor ?
the only part I'm torn (i have the a7Rii) is i do mainly videography, but that stupid fast focusing helps so much in spontaneous situations. now, i miss the s-log3, i SO WISH they would have just out the S-log 3 in the r2. and the low light. god, they literally mae polar opposite cameras with pros and cons to both
thank you! In order to facilitate more people to understand, I want to translate it in Chinese.
Which would strike a good balance for gymnasium video and stills? A7rii with APSC 4k or ...torn on this decision . Autofucus is scaring me on A7Rii for indoor sports (lower light)
Another wrinkle...I was shooting a concert last night. The stage was well lit but the room was dark. I was using the LCD screen which was fine until I articulated it. At that point the screen went black. It came back one more time then went out again. I resorted to using the viewfinder instead. Is it because the viewfinder in the dark room figured my eye was up against the eyepiece? Or is it something to do with articulating the screen?
Which would you recommend for an all-around vlogging camera that is also good for landscape photography? Lowlight capability is great but not a top priority.
If you are shooting alone, there is something to be said for articulating monitors that allow you to see yourself as you are recording. If you need 4K, that would be the gh4, ( which has poor low light performance) if you don't need 4K, I'd look at the canon 80d or 70d
MichaelTheMentor I meant your opinion on the a7sii vs a7rii - I will be doing vlogging and a lot of landscape photography on the same body. (Monitors aren't important).
Thanks so much I have the A7ii and a6000 and shoot AVCHD for sermons in 1080p every Sunday. I plan for 4K in 8months. I shoot 40%video and 60%stills (and fusion) My last 3 jobs I had a7ii shooting video on tripod and A6000 shooting stills. I am thinking of 3 options: 1) Replace A7ii for A7Rii 2) A7ii+A7Sii 3) or cry once and replace A7ii with both Rii and Sii. I love the Rii but 3hr service shoot may not work with potential over heating at the back of my mind I love cropping in stills so A7Sii's 12MPs worrying. I could always by one and hire the other(which one) I know it's my choice, but I would value opinions on what you would do in my position. If anyone else can help. Much appreciated...
Hi Michael, I bought your A7Sii tutorial videos. Very useful. Wondering if you know how to use the A7Sii with lightroom. When I'm in the studio I have the camera tethered to my camera so I can see my portraits on a big screen as I shoot. When I connect the A7Sii it automatically mounts it, rather than letting Lightroom see it as a source. Any ideas on how to do this?
Yes I do. There are some different USB settings so I'll go through them and see if any of them make a difference. On another note, I've noticed that when I take a photo there's a slight delay before the camera's ready to take another photo. I imagine it is recording to the card and that's the reason for it. I'm really using the camera for video almost exclusively but was thinking about getting the A7Rii for photography. I probably wouldn't buy it if that also has the same problem as during events you really need to snap away very quickly. I'm used to my Canon 5D Mark iii's instantaneous readiness!
What are the reasons that I'd want to keep my canon lenses (70-200 2.8, 25-105 f4, 50mm 1.2) if I buy an A7Sii vs switching to Sony's lenses. I imagine when shooting 4K for events like weddings it would be really hard to focus using Canon's lenses but if I can manage would the image quality be better? Any advice would be appreciated!
Dear Michael, I want to switch to full frame but cannot decide which camera is best for my needs. I shoot landscape, low light and want to start portrait. My ff candidates are the A7, A7II and A7R. The A7 is identical with the A7II but without IBIS. The A7R has more resolution. Most important for me is resolution but it should also be not too noisy in of low light. I would buy the A7RII but I cannot afford it. The most bang for the buck would be the A7 but I am not sure it fits my needs. Could you help me and point me in the right direction ?
+TheRcEngineer save for the camera that excites you the most. The satisfaction of investing in quality will always last longer than satisfaction of saving a few bucks.
I haven't found this answer anywhere. Which of these two has faster Continuous AF in VIDEO, for example when tracking a face. Also how does the continuous AF I video compare to the dual pixel AF offered by canon. I'm assuming that will be there in their next full frame, so wondering if I should wait.
I shoot music video and 120FPS is a great thing that I cannot close my eyes to it, so I go for sony a7sII however I currently have a canon 5D mark III . I use this for photography if I need it, however, if I did not have the canon, I would definitely go for a7r II. But thinking about it might get overheated in the middle of music video shoot scares me a lot. Thank for the video Michael, I have a question, I have Atomos Flame recorder, would it prevent overheating on A7r II ? thank you
Ryan - Yes that would definitely prevent overheating and thats one of the reasons I bought my Atomos Shogun. I think the overheating is produced by the onboard computer crunching all the data to record on the internal card.
Hi! I have a question... I'm looking for a good camera... something with good FPS, and great autofocusing, and also fairly decent video possibilities for the occasional video... I was looking at the Canon 70D but is there anything better for the price/cheaper? maybe even slightly more expensive? I plan on doing a wide variety of photos, Family photos, Portraits, car photography, star photography, pet photography, etc... Any ideas on a good setup? I don't want to pay TOO much... :/
Very good comparison video! +1 Gotta say the A7S II is quite amazing when it comes to video. Problem for me is that I could not really buy a camera just for video at this moment, and even if the A7RII is good, I do want a proper mirror for still-images. Just can't beat that.
Hi Michael, great video btw. Thank you :) What would you recommend for low light fiber optic fashion as seen on this page ( your mind your world.com ). I'm very confused now, cause to my understanding A7R has greater features, but A7S is great for low light shooting if I understand right. Thanks for advice Michael :)
+SuperDigitalMe i shoot with the 24-70 zeiss, it is a great lens for what it is, but it leaves much to be desired. the gmaster 24-70 2.8 is a much better buy for this focal range, this is coming from someone who currently has the zeiss on his camera and has used the gmaster lens

Best video ever on the 2 comparison! Thanks buddy.
BR
hi Michael, very good comparing. Thanks heaps.
Do you think you can shoot multicam with the S and the R, both full frame without noticeable difference in the footage? Do you think they would cut well?
PaivaCine if the color settings are the same in the same light- yes they should. If one is off it will be a nightmare to fix
Great review - but your graphic at 6:53 lists the A7R2 twice when talking about the backside illuminated sensor vs the Cmos sensor.
This happens sometimes when we have lots of titles. Was it unclear?
No, it was clearly worded. I just caught the graphic and went back to confirm.
+Bryce Prevatte thank you. We just messed up and didn't catch it
Great review, but I'm just waiting so patiently on the Panasonic GH5!
Thanks for the valuable info.
Hi, Michael, your illustration of the two camera is so damn good, it is much better than other folks in showing us which camera to buy! After seeing this video, I now has much better ideas of their difference, thank U so much!
Thank you for noticing!
First, thanks for 4k...
Second awesome review :)
PS: YOu have mistake on 6:45, both text is A7RII
I used the metabones adapted canon 2.8 v2. It actually works very well on the A7rii, but most of the time I'm using the 24-70 f4 Sony in the A7 bodies
Excellent video you helped make an important decision A7SII 4K video
Fantastic video. Which camera would you recommend for videographers. The Sony a7s, with the ninja assassin, the a7r2 or the a7s2? Not stills.
A7s2
+MichaelTheMentor I'm buying my first camera. I'm a big fan who loves your videos. However, you missed one important question. Are there any differences in image quality in video between the a7s2 vs the a7r2? Thank you
+james cook the a7s2 is better in the ways stated above. There may be some hiccups that will be revealed with more testing, but the a7s2 is a better video camera.
Great video ! Very helpful for me!! Thank you !!!
Excelent review. Very clear. and right to the point.
Hey Micheal,
great video, for the ISO stills test..... were those out of cam Jpegs ( with all that sony denoising and Stuff) or True RAWS ?
...explains a lot... i rely wanted to be this the camera wich takes the dslr world appart.... but i saw iso raw comparission between the 5ds d810 atrii and differences in noise were negliable... unfortuneatialy :-( just the jpegs look that better because sony has a realy good jpeg algorythem.. probalbly the best
+Horst Schlämmer JPEGs
Awesome footage! We shot our last movie "my days as a woflman" on the sony A7s with shogun. pretty nice picture quality :)
Would be interesting to test a speed booster on the a7r2 in Apsc crop mode but my experience in the past has been it softens the image
Thanks for you video! It's perfect. Understandable even for me (English is not my language), so helpful.
great video told me what i wanted to know , thanks ...
What is the used price comparison between the two? And how much is a metabones for canon? Thanks
Very good video!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Love your video. Sony a7R m2 has bsi
Very nice work great info.
Glad they combined all the good features and then added even more for the a9
Can you pls. explain the video futures on 7RSII?
Good video as usual but I'm very disappointed by the A7s ii because i saw if you shoot a face which moving a little too fast, the camera makes a mess in the part that moves. So you can't use it for moving subjects. Are you agree with it MichaelTheMentor ?
Not panning quickly
+MichaelTheMentor Sorry i don't understand (I'm French).
(i mean motionless camera and moving subject)
my A7SII gets grainy at 6400 ASA in 4K.. especially in the greys. Not so bad in HD. I wonder if its a bad sensor.. Bought it from B&H though.
Thanks again for taking your time on this, you got my sub!
AWESOME review. You just helped me make my decision. Thanks for the videos and facts! Really helpful. Defiantly earned a sub :)
so in conclussion which camera you recommend im planning to buy this sony a7sii for video.
the only part I'm torn (i have the a7Rii) is i do mainly videography, but that stupid fast focusing helps so much in spontaneous situations. now, i miss the s-log3, i SO WISH they would have just out the S-log 3 in the r2. and the low light. god, they literally mae polar opposite cameras with pros and cons to both
thank you!
In order to facilitate more people to understand, I want to translate it in Chinese.
Thank you!
Great video dude!
Great comparison, as usual. Very helpful. Thanks a bunch! :)
+Krysta Alexa S oh I thought you had watched the video. The a7rii
witch one performes better for night photographty with stills n iso performance with astrophotography of milkyways n stuff
Good breakdown
thank you !! great review
Thanks so much
I have the A7ii and a6000 and shoot AVCHD for sermons in 1080p every Sunday. I plan for 4K in 8months.
I shoot 40%video and 60%stills (and fusion) My last 3 jobs I had a7ii shooting video on tripod and A6000 shooting stills.
I am thinking of 3 options:
1) Replace A7ii for A7Rii
2) A7ii+A7Sii
3) or cry once and replace A7ii with both Rii and Sii.
I love the Rii but 3hr service shoot may not work with potential over heating at the back of my mind
I love cropping in stills so A7Sii's 12MPs worrying.
I could always by one and hire the other(which one)
I know it's my choice, but I would value opinions on what you would do in my position.
Thank you. Unfortunately no, I haven't heard of this bug. Do you have the latest Lightroom update?
Did anyone else notice the major aliasing going on in her shirt in the A7sII versus the A7rII?
Great Video. Keep em coming.
Thank you 👍great comparison down to the point
Thank you Mishaal
thank you.Very good video
Dear Michael, I want to switch to full frame but cannot decide which
camera is best for my needs. I shoot landscape, low light and want to
start portrait. My ff candidates are the A7, A7II and A7R. The A7 is
identical with the A7II but without IBIS. The A7R has more resolution.
Most important for me is resolution but it should also be not too noisy
in of low light. I would buy the A7RII but I cannot afford it. The most
bang for the buck would be the A7 but I am not sure it fits my needs.
I'm assuming that will be there in their next full frame, so wondering if I should wait.
super helpful content!
Do you recommend the R2 for pit press photography "gigs"
Yes
Very good comparison video! +1
Gotta say the A7S II is quite amazing when it comes to video. Problem for me is that I could not really buy a camera just for video at this moment, and even if the A7RII is good, I do want a proper mirror for still-images. Just can't beat that.
+Wistbacka I would just get a a6000 or a6300 for stills and a A7sii for video.
+Kanye East Is the as72 really that bad for still that you'd prefer the a6000 or a6300 over it?
Dominique Brown I actually retract my statement. The A7sii is pretty darn good, but if you're gonna do large prints then I suggest getting the A7r/ii
a7s ii for film and photo or a7r ii...btw
a7s ii for photo or a7r ii for film ???
Hi Michael, great video btw. Thank you :) What would you recommend for low light fiber optic fashion as seen on this page ( your mind your world.com ). I'm very confused now, cause to my understanding A7R has greater features, but A7S is great for low light shooting if I understand right. Thanks for advice Michael :)
Hi Michael, which one would you recommend (a7SII or a7RII) for shooting high school basketball tournaments from the center court/sideline?
Shawn Gordon definitely A7RII
I can't wait until the Sony A7S3 comes out with a back side illuminated sensor. The Sony A7R2 is doing really good for 42 megapixels in low light.
If I had to keep one, it would be the A7rii
The zeiss 24-70F4 has very mixed reviews, what do you think about it?
+SuperDigitalMe i shoot with the 24-70 zeiss, it is a great lens for what it is, but it leaves much to be desired. the gmaster 24-70 2.8 is a much better buy for this focal range, this is coming from someone who currently has the zeiss on his camera and has used the gmaster lens
