    Congrats David Matchett! Great job figuring out a way to extend your mold casing! The mold is beautiful and now you have a gorgeous burl available whenever you want it!😊 A tip for eliminating flashing from underneath your piece as well as any leaks on the bottom of your mold casing: for smaller molds roll out a thin layer of sulfur free clay and slightly embed the piece and mold casing. An easy way to roll out a thin even layer of clay is to lay down a wooden skewer on either side of the clay and set the roller on those. For bigger pieces roll out a thicker layer of clay to create a better seal around the mold casing, this will help it to hold a larger volume of silicone. I hope I explained that well enough.. in case someone wants to try it.😆 Also, a good way to help prevent an exo-thermic reaction is to refrigerate it for a day or longer depending on its size and depth. All of your pieces turned out wonderful and your egg was perfectly shaped!❤

    • @Toonpish
      @Toonpish  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Funo.
      Does it matter if the clay is soft?
      Can you use it again after?
      I cured the resin in the pressure pot so couldn’t put it in the fridge.
      But I’ve seen Nick Zammeti put ice packs in the pot 🤔😂
      A small amount of ripple is no big deal. Most likely get turned away anyway.
      Thank you for your comment 😀😀 I really appreciate it.
      And I think it definitely looks egg shaped 😂😂😀👍

    • @funo6581
      @funo6581 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Toonpish Yes the clay should be malleable, The brand Sargent Plastilina is sulfur free and would work. Silicone rubber doesn’t like sulfur and it can inhibit the cure. You can use it again after. I saw Nick Zammeti do that too! That was a great idea! On BM Sculptures channel he’s put 8 gallons of epoxy in a single pour! I’m not sure on the depth but, it was at least a ft. He used a vacuum chamber to degass and then put it in a refrigerator chest and I think he set the temp at around 50F. It took over a week to cure but, no bubbles and no reaction. I did a 3-4” pour using reg. resin with a 3/8” max recommendation and packed ice around it then refrigerated it. It came out with slight warping, which like you say was an easy fix. I didn’t have any deep pour resin and I wanted to use my new mold!😂 So, it can be a good tool if you’re pushing the pour depth a bit, or in my case.. a lot!😂

    • @Toonpish
      @Toonpish  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow that’s impressive 😀😀😀
      I will remember that though 😀
      And look into the sulfur free stuff . 😀😀👍❤️

    • @funo6581
      @funo6581 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Toonpish I just realized when I mentioned rolling out a thin layer of clay, I was thinking about making smaller molds. Because I’ve been thinking about making a small mold.😜😆But, I didn’t say that in my comment! Sorry about that.🤪 For a larger mold with a bigger volume of silicone rubber, I’d definitely roll it out thicker. So you can push the casing into the clay deeper to create a better seal but, not so deep that all the clay gets squeezed out from under the casing. With smaller molds that’s not a problem. As far as the piece that you want to mold goes, it just needs to be embedded slightly. Did that make sense?😆Now I need to edit my original comment!😂

      @Toonpish  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Love this video! Thanks for sharing your work. Your project turned out beautifully! I'd like to ask...what did you use to cut the resin casting into pieces? I have a resin cube i want to cut down but wasn't sure if a miter saw would work or what kind of blade to use?

    • @Toonpish
      @Toonpish  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used a bandsaw, but any saw will do. I have used a scroll saw before and even a bench sander to shape pieces. I hope that helps 😀😀👍❤️

    Could you have coated the sides of the wood in resin?

    • @Toonpish
      @Toonpish  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but not uv resin as this silicone doesn’t set with it 😀💜

    Hi Wendy!! I'm in the us and can't buy the Vista black pigment :( I have seen you use it for other videos as well. Is there anything else you know of that's comparable? Thank you for this tutorial! I just ordered the mold casting kit. I'm going to try and make a mold of a dragon and see what I can play around with after all these tutorials!!

      Thank you Dawn.
      I don’t have much access to the US market for liquid pigments, but that is definitely what I would choose over mica for a solid black.
      I hope you have fun and achieve your mould 😀😀💜

    Hi, hope all is good with you. I have a question can you cast a ceramic piece in silicone to make a mold out of whatever it is ceramic? Love your channel!!!

    When you turn the blanks, does the pieces look like wood in the piece you are making?

    • @Toonpish
      @Toonpish  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They look black at the bottom as it’s resin but the top looks like wood 😀😀 have a look at the pictures at the end of the video 👍❤️

      @@Toonpish those are pretty. I saw them when I watched the video earlier. The Stich one is my favorite. I wonder what an amber color resin under the mica powder instead of black would look like?

    • @Toonpish
      @Toonpish  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The micas work better with a black background.
      It will totally change the mica completely.

    That is amazing Wendy. I have been looking for a way to make pieces with melee burl in them or something that looks like it. I have toyed with 3d printing them but the heat from the resin would be too much so this is perfect. How much do you think you would charge for one of these moulds cos I would love one.
