I was 19 years old and a crew member on HMS Chatham and on parade that evening, you can just make me out in the Royal Navy squad at 3:08. I was one of the smallest members in the parade and I was right in the middle. I remember that evening so well and how heavy that rain came down. I have that evening as one of my most treasured days in my life. I was so proud and worked so hard in the training leading up to that evening and I feel privileged to have been there for this historical moment.

A sad day, but it was a piece of history that needed to happen and a correction to a historical wrong. Hong Kong was fortunate to have Britain lead it through China's 20th century turmoil, but that time has come and gone. I will look forward while appreciating everything that has happened in the past.

中國人太重民族了，很多時候失去了欣賞的能力，十分可惜。
明顯的，彭定康身為一位末代港督，他對香港的發展是沒有心機的，他至多就是個理想派的政治家，在當時的英國如此信仰民主的人並不少見，我相信他對於香港的愛是很純粹的，而這樣就夠了。
許多網友總是放不下英國佔領香港的歷史脈絡，當然英人簽下南京條約補約是不具道德的行為，但過了153年，難道香港對於大陸人的意義還是只停留在鴉片戰爭，那段中國受屈辱的記憶嗎？說白了，彭定康根本無法選擇是否要當大英帝國的後裔，香港人也無法選擇自己是否為英國海外屬土的公民，他們能做的就是努力的讓這座城市變得更好，其他用民族主義為他們套上的枷鎖，在我看來都是很不公平的。
香港人對英國有感情，是因為倘若沒有英國人就不會有今天的香港。當然我們瞭解英國政府在六七事件以前對於香港的治理態度很冷淡，但是在後來的30年，香港變成了世界三大城市、東方之珠。當中我們明白大多是香港人的努力，和中國給予的時機所造就的，但英國人就完全沒有功勞了嗎？當時相對進步很多的科技、可預期的法律、衛生的生活環境、廉政公署、西方世界的薰陶、更高程度的學術自由、英語環境、自由港地位、脫離了過去共產黨失敗的政策，香港的繁榮絕對和英國有關啊。英國給予了香港人100年前不敢奢求的未來。這部分的感情，在我看來是再也正常不過的。
當然九七主權移交了，中國的主權割讓史也就此告了一個段落。但當我們以屈辱終結的角度來看之外，能否也以純粹欣賞一座城市的角度，去同理、同情共感這塊土地上的人們，他們的歷史，他們的故事，而非以謾罵的角度，拿著民族主義的枷鎖套上他們的脖子。
如今中港會產生衝突，很大一部分是因為兩地的人們對於理想的認知上的差距。不可否認，即使在主權移交後，兩地人們的生活習慣還是有很大的差別，這時我們更要冷靜下來溝通、去傾聽；香港人不再以那麼高的姿態去看待大陸人，大陸人不再以人多勢眾去寬容一部分人的野蠻，唯有這樣，兩地的人們才會一起進步。這也才是我們希望的未來。
談回民族主義，如今的世界環境已不再像以往那麼單純，有許多挑戰是需要全人類一同去面對的。這時再去區分你我民族，分膚色，甚至分高低貴賤，在個人看來都是非常不理性的，也很不具素養的。崇優，是一個人人都應具備的心態，去欣賞一個民族的歷史，去欣賞一塊土地的美感，去了解一個思想的脈絡，這時我們才發現，其實所謂的你我，本質上，根本沒有什麼差別。
無論如何希望兩地的人都可以更好，香港加油。

真的感觸良多,當年冒著雨觀看香港主權移交的一刻,大英帝國在遠東最後的一個自治領交回中國人手裡,二十五年過去,從1986年代議政制改革至2019年全面直選民選議員告終,香港人33年的努力就始白費!我們不禁要問,從全面直選到回歸1986以前政府非官守議員全部都是委任制,那麼從1991年政府官員本地化政策下訓練出來的一羣AO及EO,他們有否感到難過？三權分立,行政,立法和司法互相制衡,英式上下議會不復存在,沒有真正由民眾投票的代議士加持下的議會認受性低,三級議會中尤以區議會的處事方式最為人汗顏,連基本上要求下級公務員出席答問大會的權力也沒有,這樣不是沒費立稅人金錢和失序的開始嗎？!區議會沒必要繼續存在,除消只是遲早問題而已!立法會討論政策時間縮短,表面上好像'政通人和',但很多後遺症相信會在數年後湧現,正如高鐵投入過大成本,回報年長~客源單一注定失敗告終!廉航會取代鐵道運輸,根本沒必要再擴充鐵路線令其他運輸行業走向式微!打破傳統行業的話,令更多從業員失業,經濟增長放慢反而加劇通脹,長期而言民生經濟和樓市走下坡,中小企業百上加斤!本地經濟發展一直以来以七成以上中小企業養活近三百萬人口,近年經濟走下坡不少公司結業,我們所認識的東方之珠~香港~真的失去了昨日的光芒,獅子山下萬家燈火的景象只能活在過去的回憶裏,實在令人感到非常無奈又無助!

沒有英國，香港在1949年早就赤化了，大躍進、文革當然也逃不了，香港當然也不過其他大陸城市。大陸的改革開放，沒有香港人的投資（當時香港GDP是大陸一半），也很難實現。英國在中國現代史扮演過壞蛋的角色，但是也有貢獻。

@@多多柴 。。。我说的不是你。。。相关史料和回忆录显示毛泽东完全可以拿回香港，但他看到了香港的价值，想把香港作为一个“出入口”。。。对于各国而言，香港都是一枚棋子。伟不伟大不评价，但中国的领导人都挺厉害，不厉害怎能坐上头把交椅，我一介普通人，无法与他们想比。我支持香港人和平理性的诉求，但现实并非完全如此。

I remember this day. I remember seeing my Oma cry. We were Prussian, and had served Germany, and then the DDR loyally (my Opa was a STASI Oberst) before coming to Amerika for his cancer treatment.
