- Pacific Pioneers of Broadcasters (PPB) held an award luncheon for KEARTH's Shotgun Tom Kelly. The PPB was founded by the late Art Gilmore who was known as Hollywood's #1 Pitchman for his deep authoritative voice overs like the introduction to Highway Patrol. He acted too on occasion mostly in Dragnet (both the 50's and 60's versions) as well as Adam-12. Shotgun Tom was a big fan of Art and used this video as a tribute to him.

For over 20 years I was close friends with his sister, Ms Dorothy Gilmore. When she passed on, Art came back to Washington to attend her funeral, and that's when I got to meet him. He was a very nice man- we sat at a table, talked for a long time, and played this peg board game that, I think belonged to either him or his sister, and he let me keep it.
I was living out of state when he passed on, or else I'd have attended his funeral as well. I was a little sad when I found out about his passing, but he lived a full and wonderful life, and now he's with his sister.

In August 2004, I wrote a letter to a then 94-year old Art Gilmore to thank him for his lifetime of work. While looking up an address for him online, I came across his phone number. On an impulse I called it, and that inimitable voice answered. He dismissed my apology for the intrusion, telling me he was just grateful it wasn't a solicitor.
We spoke for nearly half an hour. He was rightfully proud of his work. He voiced Franklin D. Roosevelt in "Yankee Doodle Dandy" 1941. The first time a sitting President had been portrayed onscreen. He'd lost count of his movie trailers, but he voiced nearly every Elvis film in the process. He said most people remembered him as Lt. Moore on "Adam-12".
He was so gracious with his time. I could scarcely believe that singular voice was actually talking to me. He thanked me for remembering him. I told him that his voice will forever be preserved as long as there are recordings and film. There are a lot of legendary voices out there, on radio and in film. For my money, Art Gilmore was the best.

What a great story. Its great to hear he enjoyed your phone call. I still hear Art’s voice everyday as I watch Highway Patrol and Dragnet every morning.

I seen that. But every time they do that I always let them know I do not like it and hope they get the message that I want to watch a hole show not just a bit and piece of one.
