My grandparents were Russian Jewish immigrants, too. My uncle, Dad's brother, bought a new '55 Buick. I was fascinated by the exploding postwar automotive industry and knew every new make and model on the road. My first car was a '53 Nash Rambler, red and black two tone with a Continental kit housing the spare tire on the back bumper. I've never gotten over my love for old cars. I own seven now having just added a thirty-one year old Bentley Mulsanne S to my auto insurance policy.
My grandad had a 54, 55, and a 57 Buick, also a 58 Pontiac Chieftan. Man...seing those cars fully restored in the classic car websites brings back tears and memories. I have two classic cars my self, and Mr Goltz was spot on when he said in the telecast that when people see these cars, their response is "OFF THE HOOK", and when I drive either one of my classics, especially when I have them both in car shows @ the same time. I am 75 years in age and when Highway Patrol would air, I'm sitting right there to watch, and would never miss a telecast. This video was amazing. Thank You Mr Goltz!

Back in the day, 1955 The Highway Patrol with Broderick Crawford was my favorite TV show, My family had just got our first TV set in late 1954, and I loved that series, I was eight years then, I grew up not far from you, Sharon Penn.
As a retired Law Enforcement Officer I can tell you that us older guys talked about this show lots. 10-4. Ironically it was on at 04:00 am locally and I would watch as I was suiting up for duty.
Great job. Excellent video. Born in '55, I watched the re-runs of "Highway Patrol" with my grandfather, a retired NYPD beat cop. I loved that tough, fast-talking, no nonsense character that Broderick Crawford portrayed. Thank you for what you do. And, thank you for preserving the history and memories of a wonderful time in American history.
I'm 70 and remembered most Broderick with that Motorola microphone in his hand and instead of 10-4 He would say "Ten pour"..😊, One of his deputy sidekicks was one of Robert Stacks sidekicks on the Untouchables..Loved both shows😊
That's one of my top favorite shows. I bought the complete set of CDs. Every time I watch them, I know what's coming but they still are as good as the first time I saw them. Having an exact replica of the car to drive around in has to be awesome. I also think this was Broderick Crawford's best work.
What a kind loving grandson you are for recognizing your beloved grandmother as the inspiration for your love of Highway Patrol. I'm sure she is looking down and smiling at her grandson!!! God bless you!!

Had a 55 Special. Rescued it from a farm field for $35. Drove it for a year. Had two heaters - one under the dash and one under the seat. In Wisconsin winter that was awesome!
Nice trip down Memory Lane, Gary. I loved the show. Broderick Crawford's rapid-fire speech was amazing, as was the use of a road block to fight every type of crime. From reading the credits of episodes I learned that the position of "Audio Supervisor" was sometimes filled by Quinn Martin, who later formed QM Productions, the company that produced "The Fugitive," "The Streets of San Francisco," and other programs.
This is a great story, because I, too, watched "Highway Patrol" with my grandma. When I went to college, in the early 70s, they were showing re-runs of the show in the late afternoon, and soon, I had the whole fraternity watching the show after classes. Finally, we decided that October 4th (10-4) should be "Broderick Crawford Day" on campus. We bought 50's suits and Fedora's from local thrift stores and we were the image of Dan Matthews! Awesome show.
Watched this show a lot as a kid...Crawford always made me think of a bulldog that reared up on its hind legs and started speaking...but the cars were the bomb...
I watched the show as a kid in New Mexico for some time before we moved in November '60, right after I turned six years old. Broderick Crawford and this show is the direct reason that I went into ham radio! From the first time I saw Crawford standing outside his car talking on his radio I had a burning desire to have a radio in my car someday. It wasn't long after I started driving when I had one, and have never gone without one since. He influenced me that much!
My dad had a Buick sedan and those fender exhaust accents really stood out. Those grills and hood ornaments. Then we got a 58 Buick Century wagon. Lots if Chome, and interior room. Oh them fantastic Buicks of the 50's.
Highway Patrol was the first to feature a generic police force operating in southern California. Dan Matthews headed the force and did whatever it needed to bringing justice and righting the wrongs of the day.
Wow! Just the other day I was chatting about those days growing up here in Michigan and Dad would say around 7:25 pm EST Hurry up it's almost time for "Lard Ass" . It was his and my favorite show of the week. Such great memories. 10-4 !
My favorite show growing up. I now have seasons 2,3 andd 4 on DVD and have watched the first season on You Tube. I love watching it now because of all the "old" new cars they used.
Thanks for the video. Back in the 50’s my dad bought a 57 Black Roadmaster 75 . It had the red stripe along the side. I was in the 4-5th grade at the time. I remember it had power windows. Love to have it today. I remember watching Highway Patrol. It has been on reruns on WE TV.

Gary........Thanks a bunch for this video. Really love the still of you and your dog from your days in Pittsburgh. and the story about your Grandmother
I owned a 1955 Buick special 2 door hardtop I bought from a family friend about 1965 for $175. I rode in it when I was 12 years old in 1955. One of my friends named at the Iron Pig, which was appropriate. It's served me well for perhaps 60000 Miles I gave it to a friend for almost nothing. He got some more use out of it until it finally died somewhere in Chicago with probably 160 or 170,000 miles. Rest in peace Iron Pig.
WOW. You are the biggest fan of any star out there. Absolutely magnificent. I’m 65 and remember watching that show. It’s all about the heart. This is really about your grandmother. Only love can produce this. Thank You for the memories. I loved it.
what a wonderful video. coincidentally, i have recently watched several dozen episodes of highway patrol, mostly because i really love the old cars. the episodes are super cheesy, produced strictly on the cheap, and are just fabulous. they used a '54 ford convertible over and over for a villain car, just hilarious! thanks for a great look at this moment in american tv.
Agree on the production value of these old shows, love watching the "Booper's" that went right threw to broadcasting, Wonder how many of the 'extra' cars on the show were really the crews own vehicles?? The Ford panel van must have been part of the production crews van, same van in the shows it was used, and later had the roof rack added........All in all, great show for the times, and fun to watch today. Classic TV!!!
Yeah, use another brand of vehicle for the villains... Reminds me that a grey Chevy Vega was in almost every episode of Rockford Files... probably for the crew to get around in... usually just parked, but in 3 or 4 episodes a character in the story drove it or got into or out of it...
A great piece by Gary. I watch Highway Patrol on you tube at every free chance. Its a time warp, to see the great 50s America. The best cars in the world and Dan Mathews was a legend. No nonsense Broderick, if only we can turn back to the golden age again.

Wow! What a super fan!! I was born in '59, but the show was on afternoons in the early '70's in Southern California and I couldn't wait to get home to watch it. Already, I was interested in how much California had already changed in only 15-17 years. Most of what appeared rural in the show, had already been built up. I guess I was always interested in the history of life around me. As for Buicks, when I moved to Utah in the late '80's, I bought a '54 Special. I think there were many similarities between '54 & '55 including the engines. But I loved that car. As a result, I grew to have a great appreciation for Buicks overall. Sad to see what they've become lately however... Thank you for the great video and memories!!
Great story! I, too, was a big fan of the show and Mr. Crawford. Living near Pittsburgh, I viewed the shows on the same channel you did, Gary. I love 50s Buicks, but my dad owned a '53 Oldsmobile. At the 4:15 mark, a '56 Olds emerges from behind the unmarked car. I own a '56 Olds Ninety-Eight that is nearly original (324 Rocket V8, Jetaway Hydramatic). You've been blessed to have so many wonderful friends by way of your passion. Long live Highway Patrol and folks like you who fondly recall the 50s!
a couple of years ago I chatting with a neighbour and the subject of Buicks came up. I mentioned that i liked the 55 hardtops, my neighbor replied.. "Broderick Crawford!" .Even in Australia the show had an Audience.
I just found this, what a cool video. My parents scrimped and saved to buy a Buick century off the showroom floor, it served our family for 20+ years. Watching Gary Goltz crank the steering wheel (31:45) brought a smile to my face. I remember my Mom cranking the wheel in parking lots, seemed like it had an infinity of wheel turns to steer at low speeds. Or a full stop. Beautiful Highway car, and the low gear takeoff was always fun. Had to depress the throttle to start the engine, and the wonder bar radio is still totally cool. And the machines dash was beautiful. Thanks for the video and show background, very well done!
So professionally and outstanding. You channeled ol Broderick perfectly. The opening theme was scary - like being yelled at by an authority figure. Love Buicks. Hope they don't go the way of Olds and Pontiac. Kudos
I remember watching reruns in the 60's. I loved watching the show. I'm also glad that the episodes can be found here on TH-cam. Yes, I loved this. I'm glad you had your car restored to Broderick Crawford's Car.
I'm from Australia....My father was a motor mechanic and a Buick man...We had a '38 and a '40 model (6 wheel equipment) both immaculate...I borrowed the '38 one night....Stoked up the ohv straight eight....I didn't know a car could go so fast!
I remember when the show was on CBS, I was born in 1948 so I was young and remember the car and the star. I was really upset when it folded and Broderick Crawford disappeared from the small screen.
Some ways I'm a little dissapointed by the modern features, but as a resto-mod It clicks all the boxes! I lost count of how many feel good moments there were in this but I certainly finished it with a happy spirit. :)
My dad and I always watched California Highway Patrol. My dad admired Broderick's style. Living in the backwoods of Montana where snow was on the ground most of the year, I was mesmerized by the California towns and landscape. I moved to Los Angeles upon finishing college...I was there before the graduation ceremony took place. I still enjoy watching the old episodes. I wish I would imitate Broderick Crawford but there was only one of him.
Excellent video, Gary!!! Brings on extreme case of nostalgia. Love the 50’s cars. So much styling and individuality. Was kids we used to sit and identify each car coming two blocks away. Prettiest cars include 1957 Chevy and Ford, the Chrysler Corp fin cars late 50’s. And your video brings to mind California and the appeal it had in the 1950’s.
Awesome video, I'm 74 years old and in 1955 my father had a two tone 55 Buick Special, we did many trips on Route 66 to New Mexico to visit relatives, this car has a special place in my Heart, as my father was a car guy and a new car every two years, his next ar was a 1957 Ford Fairlane. My license plate says USART66 in honor of my father. Needless to say Highway Patrol with my favorite TV show at the time.
Excellent vid !! I was born in1960 and grew up in Western PA . I remember Sea Hunt on WTAE. I don't remember Highway Patrol on WTAE. Maybe it was on Channel 53. We could not get 53 where I lived. KDKA and WIIC as I recall, Did not run much syndicated programming. I have watched the Highway Patrol series thanks to streaming video.
I grew up watching Highway Patrol Beaver Cleaver and later DRAGNET and ADAM 12. All in beautiful *Black and White.* Dad even had a 1954 Buick when I was 15 and would let me drive it to Camp Union when we'd go to the cabin. Those were the days. I enjoyed your presentation very much... I too like old things...

WTAE every weekday
Thank you so much for the trip back in time. I remember laying on the floor watching the show on a 14 inch screen.
a couple of years ago I chatting with a neighbour and the subject of Buicks came up. I mentioned that i liked the 55 hardtops, my neighbor replied.. "Broderick Crawford!" .Even in Australia the show had an Audience.
This is awesome! Great background history about the series! I loved this show. Well done documentary Gary! 10-4!
Always watched these episodes on You Tube. Highway Patrol had great writers and great actors.
I had a 54 Buick Super. I loved it, but never got around to restoring it.
10-4!
Between love and madness lies Obsession. Yeah, but I loved the show too. 10-4 Gary.
This is fun, Gary !
Thanks, man !
So professionally and outstanding. You channeled ol Broderick perfectly. The opening theme was scary - like being yelled at by an authority figure. Love Buicks. Hope they don't go the way of Olds and Pontiac. Kudos
professional
I remember watching reruns in the 60's. I loved watching the show. I'm also glad that the episodes can be found here on TH-cam. Yes, I loved this. I'm glad you had your car restored to Broderick Crawford's Car.
10-4, thanks
I'm from Australia....My father was a motor mechanic and a Buick man...We had a '38 and a '40 model (6 wheel equipment) both immaculate...I borrowed the '38 one night....Stoked up the ohv straight eight....I didn't know a car could go so fast!
Took a while to get wound up, though.
@@stevenredman1582 You're right!
I still watch Highway Patrol reruns on MeTV...love that show! Great restoration- truly a piece of history!
thanks, 10-4!
I remember when the show was on CBS, I was born in 1948 so I was young and remember the car and the star. I was really upset when it folded and Broderick Crawford disappeared from the small screen.
Fun, entertaining, and very cool !
My Grandfather loves Buicks i had one 85 back then and now 93 Lesabre.
I love it.. Cobra KiWay Patrol!! Great video along with a great Series!!
thanks!
My first car was a '57 Buick green two-tone. Built like a tank! Loved your video, very professionally made.
Born in 1958 - this was the first show I remember watching - and I was fascinated by the Big Buick driven by a Big Cop! The show was mesmerizing…
Some ways I'm a little dissapointed by the modern features, but as a resto-mod It clicks all the boxes! I lost count of how many feel good moments there were in this but I certainly finished it with a happy spirit. :)
had to make it drivable, have put 80,000 miles on it!

That was great Mr. Goltz! Thanks.
This just goes to show that we can have a successful adult life without completely abandoning the “kid” inside. Excellent and congratulations!
This is the best show i have ever seen on youtube. thank I had a great time watching this . 2150 bye
Need to see more videos like this on TH-cam.
BRAVO!!!! Excellent, wonderful story, well done, Thank You.
Epic video! Hope to see this car in person some day.

FANTASTIC. So happy I stumbled upon this. Very, very nice. Thank you for posting.
Thanks for the memories!
21-50 to Gary : Fantastic video, I loved it and now I will watch some episodes on cable .
WTAE then later Channel 53
Love this! Been on a serious Highway Patrol binge for a while.
Same here. I discovered it on TH-cam last year and have been hooked ever since.
@@austx290 Me too. It's actually like a time capsule. History on film! I watch it everyday.
ME TV has Highway Patrol on.
