  • The original version of CHiPS! Although sadly, Ponch was always jealous he didn't have the charm or sexy good looks that drove the ladies crazy like Dan Matthews did.
Your announcer is Art Gilmore. 10-4!

Sadly, Art Gilmore, the narrator for the entire Highway Patrol series passed away this week at age 98. Art's list of accomplishments is way too long for this, but it can truly be said his voice dominated the movie trailer business in the 40's, 50's and 60's. Besides Highway Patrol, Art played commanding officers in Dragnet, Adam-12, and Emergency. I'm told he was highly desired by producers and directors because he showed up prepared and usually got it right in one or two takes.

Art Gilmore is my wife’s uncle. I knew him very well. He was the kindest, most decent man I have known. Art’s wife Grace lived to 106. They don’t raise them like this anymore.
Art went to Washington State College (now WSU) to study elocution. His teacher’s prior student was Edward R. Murrow.

@@thomasryan5736 My experience exactly. My mom knew Art from their days in Tacoma and my dad knew him from KNX radio (he may have introduced them). I remember going to their house in Sherman Oaks to use the pool. Being a wanna-be disc jockey, I was fascinated by his home recording studio. I followed in his footsteps and got a degree in communications from Washington State University, although I didn't end up working in the field. I exchanged Christmas cards with Grace until her passing. Truly great people!

This is my favorite ever TV police show. It looked real because they used the grubbiest locations ever shot on film, LOL. But it made the show look very realistic. The girl who played the secretary (seen on this clip) later played Beaver's school teacher on Leave It To Beaver (Diane Brewster).

Its funny . . . I never, ever noticed that the cars and all only said "Highway Patrol" and had no state identification whatsoever. I was very surprised when I read that years later. I probably shouldn't have been that surprised though, considering that I couldn't actually read yet when I used to watch the show . . .hehe!

I think he was. On Dragnet they changed the names to protect the innocent. They didn't change the names on Highway Patrol, because they were not all that innocent. They were guilty. They were guilty as hell. One more thing. Joe Friday only had to fire his gun twice on Dragnet. Dan Mathews fired or used his gun on almost every show.

@displayfireworks1 You never watched "DRAGNET"? In his mind, Joe Friday never met a citizen that wasn't a total dumbass that did not deserve to be slapped around for their stupidity. His contempt for John Q. Public was palpable and apparently a philosophy that has always existed in law enforcement. "THE SWEENEY" was ready to give anyone a good kicking who got in his way. This type of cop is there "To Protect (you from yourself) And To Serve ( Doughnuts).

What does the Highway Patrol do now? They wait for the speed limit to go from 55 to 40 and try to give you a ticket. Then when you do not sign it they taser you like they did to that one guy in that video “Speeding Ticket Taser”. I wish you were around to see Broderick Crawford. What happened to these cops over the years? It is like regular citizens are criminals.

I was wondering too. I'm not positive but it looks a lot like where the 118 Fwy is now in Granada Hills or Northridge...maybe 405N on the way to Santa Clarita. I read that Crawford had a suspended license for drunk driving and therefore had to film driving scenes on private roads. Especially true because if the CHP presence on set as technical advisors! LOL!

@@berlinsaintclair9100 Most of "Highway Patrol" was shot in the northwest San Fernando Valley (Northridge and Chatsworth, mostly) as well as Palmdale and Lancaster.
As for Crawford's well-known drinking, what they did was they would have the "Sergeant" drive "Matthews" around since Crawford wasn't allowed to drive. I don't know about their use of private roads as I don't believe there were many such things back in the late 50s.
