  • Birdie, our beloved 12 year old German Shepard, has been suffering from degenerative myelopethy (hip displasia) for over a year. We recently got her a new wheelchair from 'Walkin' Wheels', and it's changed her life! Check it out!

First I wanna thank you for your video. No that was probably a hard experience for you back then. But I have a tremendous amount of respect for you for making your dog as comfortable as possible and trying to improve its quality of life.

Warms my heart...she is a lucky girl for having humans who care for her as you do! (Although, I bet you feel that you are the lucky ones!) You may also want to purchase some PAWZ dog boots as the rubber stretchy boots fit like a glove so they can't fall off and protect against foot damage and the elements. Have you also heard about the success with the new stem cell procedure that some vets are providing? Amazing results! Check out some videos.

My 8 year old German Shepherd also uses a Walkin' Wheels for his Degenerative Myelopathy. They work very well and are adjustable in length, width, height, angle, and more. You don't need a custom wheel chair for a dog, which is twice as expensive. Walkin' Wheels are not cheap, but they seem much sturdier and more adjustable than many of the less expensive brands. One comment: Degenerative Myelopathy is NOT the same as Hip Dysplasia. DM is a genetic, progressive paralysis of the lumbar region of the back for which there is no cure. If your dog has DM, he/she will end up completely paralyzed from the mid-back down. Hip Dysplasia can be corrected with surgery,; there is nothing you can do to correct DM, which is heart-breaking. My Shepherd's hips are great----too bad he can't use them :o( The ONLY good thing about DM is that it is painless. The wheels work for some time, but eventually the dog's front legs, which are now doing ALL the work, will wear out and weaken. My boy weighs 95# (less now because he has lost rear end muscle mass), and he is just beginning to have trouble getting up into a sitting position, which is necessary for me to be able to lift his back end into the wheels. I don't know what I will do when he can't get up at all (I'm single, almost 70, and picking up his whole body is not something I can do any more), but for now, he loves his 2-3 mile walks and riding in the car. BTW, you can have a dog's DNA tested for DM----my boy, Kuuma's, parents are BOTH carriers of DM, so every one of their "high quality, responsibly-bred" puppies has or will have DM. Inbreeding is irresponsible, unconscionable, cruel and should be out-lawed. Another BTW: Kuuma also has Pancreatic Insufficiency which requires every single bite of food be pre-treated with enzymes for 20 minutes or he gets diarrhea because his pancreas no longer works to digest food. Without the enzymes, Kuuma would starve to death. PI is ANOTHER result of inbreeding and is also very common in German Shepherds. If you want a GSD, get one with GERMAN bloodlines----they are much healthier that American breds. Better yet, get a GSD crossed with something else from a shelter.

How Does a Male or Female Dog Go Pee or Poop in one of these? I have a Medium size Chi-pom about 25 lbs about 16 inches at the Shoulders. He's just now having a weakness in his back right leg and kinda side winds a little when he's tired. But Boy does he get excited about running out the Door first thing in the morning and when there are treats to be given. Spins around so excited, You wouldn't know He wi.l turn 16 on June 5th.. He runs around like he's 3yrs old. I hate to see Him disappointed in himself when he gets tired so quickly because of His back legs.. I want to help Him with a Wheel Chair, Don't know if I can even afford one.. Maybe I should try to Build one? Can You give me some advice?
