  • Mya still has daily adventures in her Walkin' Wheels mobility cart!
    Mya Sweetie is our beloved German Shepherd. Mya has been a family member for her whole 8 years of life, including coming on holidays with us! Sadly, she has Degenerative Myelopathy which affects her spine and back legs, causing paraplegia. Diagnosed late in 2015, she is now (September 2016) in the late stages of this disease and has used a Walkin' Wheels mobility cart for the last few months which I bought from Handicapped Pets in America for her. It was well worth it and she has enjoyed playing her favorite games like ball as well as many walks and beach trips in her wheelie cart! She is forever loved and will be greatly missed when she passes. Mya has a sweet loving nature - hence her nickname Sweetie. She's a beautiful girl and has lived her life to the fullest!
    Mya - born 4 May 2008, joined our family in July 2008 and has lived 8 happy years with us to date! Love you Mya

    When wearing her wheels, that is the face of a happy dog. Walking, exploring, sniffing, digging, playing, and hanging with other dogs: the things all dogs love to do.

    My brothers dogs are his entire world, one has hip problems. He was more upset than when his wife left him. He got these-it changed the dogs and his life. Fortunately my dogs are bullet proof and immortal so I don't have to worry about such things, but it is an amazing option for owners with mortal dogs. My dogs are immortal!~Don't correct me! I cant cope thinking something could happen to them!!!

    Thank you so much for posting this video, it's given me a lot of hope for my 13 yr old German Shepherd/husky mixed pup. He was just diagnosed a few hours ago with this condition and I was really worried that he couldn't go on different terrains if we got him a wheelchair.

    Thanks for the informative video on Mya- your German Shepherd, with DM.
    I have a male GSD, whose only about 6 1/2- 7 years of age.
    He was recently also diagnosed with DM, we started noticing odd symptoms a couple months ago, initial thought was beginning to have hip dysplasia, as I'm familiar with that disease, but after closer observation, his symptoms were not consistent with that diagnosis, and they seemed to have progressed rapidly from the moment we first noticed, til I could get him to the veterinarian- they were much easier to spot .
    I have been working on a homemade wheelchair cart for him, very similar to yours in the video, just trying to put the finishing touches on it, such as the crisscrossing rear supports, and then some padding, hopefully to have it finished by the weekend, to see how he will do on it,
    I put him in it, a couple times today as I verified measurements, and were I needed to adjust it, he wasn't very fond of this contraption around him, hopefully he'll get better with a bit of use.
    Thanks again.
    She's a beautiful German Shepherd!

    Your Dogs cute. OMGness. My German Shepherd just turned 11 in November and a few days ago she couldn't stand up. We been carrying her to the bathroom every day. It's heartbreaking. Came across your video while looking and researching on Dog Wheelchairs.

    Thank you for the beautiful video that emphasizes what our dogs with DM are able to do. My95# long-haired German Shepherd, Kuuma, has been using his Walkin' Wheels for over 6 months. His front legs are starting to weaken, so I will probably need to get the front wheel addition soon. Kuuma is only 8 years old, so he is happy and peppy, and NOT ready to die. The best thing about DM is that the dogs are in no pain. The worst thing is that there is no cure, and it gets progressively worse. Both of my dog's parents are carriers of DM, so all of their puppies were and are destined to get DM----it wasn't a matter of if, it's a matter of when. The cause is in-breeding. My boy has "excellent bloodlines from a top breeder in the US", and look what happened to him. So irresponsible of breeders. So unfair to the dogs. Kuuma is now incontinent, mostly fecally, which adds another challenge. I am becoming a true expert at cleaning up poop in the house in less than 2 minutes! There's a good description of many ways to deal with incontinence on-line, including lifting your dog's rear end so he poops in the toilet. Kuuma is too big to do that, but I can now get him to poop when I want him to. Do not give up on your dog if he or she has DM. It does require more time to care for your dog, but as long as a dog has the desire to live, he deserves to be given love, care, and the best quality of life you can manage.

    These carts are superb. I have bought one from a French company called Mikan. However the shafts were too short and longer ones were ordered two weeks ago from the USA. Momixou is getting impatient and so am I. If Walkin’ Wheels is listening, I would appreciate some help!

      One of my vets told me DM dogs usually don't get incontinent, but my big German Shepherd has. Mostly he cannot control when he poops, but I've learned how to get him to poop when I need him to. He's just starting to have less control over when he pees, so I will probably make him a belly band to keep it contained when he's in the house. There is no way to reverse this, but there ARE ways to deal with the challenges. Thank god for Google and Pinterest!

    Hi, Thanks a ton for this video. Our Doggie Betsy who is a St.Bernard has hip Dysplasia and is a senior dog now at almost 10yrs old. She has developed the exact same challenges in walking since a month now. we hold her from behind using home made straps made with towels which we hold under her belly to take her out to walks so she can do her pee and poop outside. Now one question I have is with these wheels on how will the Doggie manage all that or I will still need to go back to suspending her with the straps when she needs to relieve herself?

    • @sandraazucar493
      @sandraazucar493 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The wheels will allow Betsy to poop and pee while in her cart. Our shepherd does. I bring some wet wipes on our walks for a bit of hygiene afterward or if there's a bit left on the cart parts. But it's no big deal.

    • @Accessgp
      @Accessgp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sandraazucar493 Well now Betsy has left us to her journey to Heaven, And I improvised on your design and ended up making a 4 wheeled card because supporting a 80KG dog on straps would hurt her belly and her hind legs were down to ZERO motion eventually during the last four months that we had her. Anyway thanks for the idea.

      I have a long-haired German Shepherd with DM. He has a Walkin' Wheels rear wheel chair. It works GREAT! It is adjustable in height, length, width, and more, plus they come in many sizes so you can get one to fit your dog perfectly. Google Walkin'Wheels for their website.

      Patrick Lee it is because dogs with dm often walk on the upside of their paws. So they get a lot of cuts there. It is also to protect the nails

    • @k.leinpondmire8096
      @k.leinpondmire8096 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Patrick Lee: you might also notice the straps hanging from the back of the wheelchair. When a DM dog can no longer use his hind feet at all, you can put them in the loops so they aren't just dragged on the ground. I do recommend, when a dog gets to that point, to make soft straps out of fleece which is easier on the legs than the harder tube or bungie that is provided with the wheelchair.
