  • If you send an email to me at hoc.288lives@yahoo.com I will send to you photos of various steps of the build with measurements. Also, after this video was posted I replaced the single padded support strap under Figgy's belly with a FULL-BODY SLING I made using soft denim material.
    I typically reply within 24-48 hours. If you do not receive a reply, please check you junk folder (sometimes email servers will send unknown emails to your junk/spam folder). If you still have not received a response from me, then please comment here on TH-cam and/or send another email to me. I will respond. I do not collect, use, share or sell any contact information from people who send emails requesting info on the walker.
    After being rescued from the streets of L.A., Figgy was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia. He needed a cart or wheelchair so that he could still enjoy his walks through his new neighborhood. Using readily available materials, I built a custom cart for him.
    UPDATE: Thanks to one of my viewers, Sonny Lowe, who wanted to build this walker for his dog Pogo, took the time to model the cart using a CAD system. If you are interested in seeing the 3-D view where you can zoom, pan and rotate the view, then please check out this link.... cad.onshape.com/documents/1c4...

      Please reconsider. The PVC wheelchair is quite strong. I have put my entire weight (175 pounds) onto the wheelchair in the video and it supported me. I have corresponded with others who have large dogs (145 pound Great Dane, 155 pound Mastiff) and they successfully built the walker. Nice design, thanks very much for sharing. There are nice wheels available at harbor freight, and I really like light PVC construction. I adopted my dog when she was 8, GSD, she had been left in a cage mostly for years and had seriously atrophied legs, her fronts are good now, but hind legs never really recovered. Now it seems like she has DM, so I scrapped the aluminum and mesh wheelchair I was building, and I'm making a version of your design. My thoughts are, as long as shes not in pain, all good.

    Wonderful story and thank you for sharing how to design wheelchair. My question is where did you get the front harness from? • @hoc31rescue
      @hoc31rescue  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I purchased the harness from Amazon for about $20. There are several being sold now that appear to be exactly the same although go by different names. Search Amazon.com for either "Lifepul No Pull Dog Vest Harness - Dog Body Padded Vest" or "PetLove Dog Harness, Soft Leash Padded No Pull Dog Harness". Either of these will work. The harness already has a strip of velcro on each side at shoulder height, but I did add (sew) a small vertical strip in about the same place for additional attachment. Also, read up on their size charts to make sure you get the correct size. And please contact me at hoc.288lives@yahoo.com if you want more details of the build and the full-body sling that I made instead of the single padded belly strip.

    How much time and material did it take to create this wheelchair?

    • @hoc31rescue
      @hoc31rescue  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jay, The materials included 3/4" PVC pipe and associated fittings (8ea - T's, 8ea - 90 degree elbows, 8ea - 45 degree, 4ea end caps), plus large (14") plastic rim wheels (made for lawn mowers), and bolts, washers and nuts for attaching the wheels. The build was relatively straightforward after getting the proper measurements of the dog (search internet for 'how to measure dog for wheelchair). Most commercially available walkers are adjustable in height. The walker I made is specific for the dog's size. The sling that supports the dog is used to adjust for height variances. Getting the sling just right took numerous fittings with the dog. The sling in the video was not substantial enough for the dog it was built for. This dog needed more support, so a larger sling that supported the dog's underside was made and used successfully. If you will send and email to me at hoc.288lives@yahoo.com, I will gladly send you all the photos I have of the build as well as the final sling that I made.

    Really cool that you made this !! I have a 72lb 11yr old female gsd . I was looking at models and the lightest one was about 10 1/2 lb ...most weight 13 and 14lb . Can I ask how much yours weighs ? • @hoc31rescue
      @hoc31rescue  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gena, I am not certain of the exact weight of the cart/wheelchair, but I built it using 3/4-inch PVC which weighs very little. I would estimate the frame and fittings weigh approximately two pounds. The wheels would be the heaviest components. The wheels I used were probably only a little over a pound each. I not sure if I understand your concern though. After I posted the video, I fabricated a full-body sling using soft denim material that literally supports the dog's body (like a hammock). By design, the two wheels of the cart "support" most of the dog's weight, so the weight of the cart should not be a problem for your dog. This comment section does not allow me to post photos and detailed descriptions. If you will contact me by email at hoc.288lives@yahoo.com I will gladly send to you the details of the build including methods of measuring the dog, parts lists, lots of photos and helpful tips when building the cart. +Spook Ville Search on "Panda Adjustable Dog Harness". I found them on ebay and Amazon.com for about $14. Just be sure and read through the description for estimating the size needed. For 50 pound Figgy, I purchased a 'small' size and it still was a bit big on him. Also, I found more expensive "pulling harnesses" that have additional adjustment features and may have been a better fit, but the Panda Harness worked well. I stitched Velcro tabs onto the side of harness which could then be attached to the front of the cart with corresponding Velcro.

    Hi great story! Well done humans! I'm now looking to do the same for my 20+ year old lurcher, I just wanted to ask: the strap that went round the waist seemed to push down on the back end, would it of worked better if it was only under the waist and not over so it would lift dogs back end up from the ground a little. Or have I got that wrong and I'm not understanding the mechanics of it. Anyway you have given me some great ideas to help my lurcher, I don't want to put her down because the rest of her is still in fighting form, you wouldn't put ya dad down just coz he was a bit wobbly on his legs, my dog deserves soo much more, just like Figgy

      If you have any questions or would like to see my build photos, you can contact me directly at hoc.288lives@yahoo.com . Also, I made a major modification to the support sling. Instead of a single padded strap, I made a full-body sling from soft denim material. It supports the whole body with no pressure points. I will provide details and dimensions for the sling as well, plus answers to frequently asked questions about the build.

      @@briwylie-hill2835 This design does not really accommodate 'squatting'. I strongly recommend that when the dog is using the wheelchair, the dog should never be unattended. This wheelchair supports the dog's weight in an upright position. Most commercial pet wheelchairs are essentially the same. However, there are some pet wheelchairs that are more accommodating. These are called "SitGo Dog Wheelchair". Unfortunately I have no experience with these new sit designs, but you can search on SitGo Wheelchair. Hope this helps.

    Hello,
    This is beautiful story, and a great thing you've done for Figgy. Your cart design will help many of our loving pets to become mobile again.
    I want to design and build one of these for my boy Pogo (our 13 year old Dalmatian) who has spinal stenosis and is finding it harder and harder to walk. The video is great and a wonderful start to building this cart, however, I do have one question...how did you translate the dogs actual measurements over to the size the cart?
    Thanks again for posting this, I must admit, it made me tear up when I saw Figgy take his first steps with the wheelchair...it gave me hope that my boy Pogo could once again enjoy those longs walks that he has been missing so much.
    For anyone interested, this is the harness I bought for Pogo (see below), I think it will work really well for him and help support his very weak and almost uncontrollable rear legs. Once I'm done building and testing it I will add the details of how I attach the harness to the frame for anyone else that would like to try it.

      Dear Sonny Lowe, thank you for the kind words. This cart was my first attempt at a two-wheeled cart. I searched online and read as much as I could. I used this site to determine the optimum places to measure Figgy... www.k9carts.com/wheelchair-measurements
      Based on what I had read, I wanted the front bars of the cart to be even with Figgy's shoulder blades and the height of the rear bars essentially even with the top of his pelvis. And I did alot of measuring and re-measuring of Figgy to be sure. It seemed best to make the cart an extension of his body, so I made the attach points and angled joints at approximate heights and locations of Figgy's natural leg joints.
      Many of the 'wheelchairs' I found online are for dogs with permanent paralysis and no use of their legs. I wanted Figgy to be able to touch the ground and use his legs to propel the cart. Length of the rear down-bars was adjusted for the diameter of the wheels to be used. (I also canted out the down-bars to minimize any chance of Figgy's legs/knees bumping into the wheel attachments as he walked). Velcro straps on the sling allowed minor adjustments to Figgy's height from the ground.
      After the cart was built, the first iteration of sling was a simple padded strap (wide velcro) to support Figgy's mid-section (his front harness would support his chest). Unfortunately, the strap did not support him comfortably due to pain in the hip and spine. I redesigned the sling so that is supported Figgy from 'stem-to-stern' which worked much better and was more comfortable.
      I have many other photos of the cart and the sling. I will gladly provide them to you. If you would send an email to me at hoc.288lives@yahoo.com, I will send to you the photos and other info.

      Apologies for the delayed response. The cart in the video was made using 3/4" PVC (I would be concerned that 1/2" may flex to much, but that might depend on the dog's weight). 1/2" PVC might be just fine for a lightweight dog. The only update that I made was to replace the single padded strap supporting the dog's belly (shown in the video) with a full body sling made from denim material. The sling supported the dog without any pressure points. If you will contact me via email at hoc.288lives@yahoo.com I will gladly provide to you copies of my build photos that show measurements and photos of the sling and how it was made.

    Is there a way to make one for a larger dog whose hind legs are painful and don't work?

    • @hoc31rescue
      @hoc31rescue  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nexus, I have corresponded with numerous pet owners who have built this walker for their large dogs. (Great Dane - 135pounds, Rottweiler - 115pounds). If you are concerned about the strength of the PVC pipe, you can change the size of all the pieces from 3/4 inch diameter to 1 inch diameter (but that is probably not necessary). You say your dog's "hind legs are painful and don't work". In the video description, I added an update where I made a full-body sling that replaces the single padded strip in the video. The full-body sling supports the dog's weight without causing painful pressure-points on the body. If you will contact me via email at hoc.288lives@yahoo.com
      I will share with you detailed photographs of how I made the sling including measurements. The full-body sling can be adjusted so that when the dog is placed in the sling, his hind legs/paws are off the ground. Also, as you may have seen in photos of commercially available wheelchairs, the hind legs can be supported with soft straps so that the paws do not touch the ground.

      @hoc31rescue  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am aware of only one type of wheelchair for dogs that allows for the pet to sit down. The product is called Sitgo Wheelchair. It appears they are sold through a company called Best Friend Mobility ( bestfriendmobility.net/sitgo-c-29.html ). I have seen the same product on Amazon.com ( www.amazon.com/Best-Friend-Mobility-Wheelchair-Revolution/dp/B014K3AUCA ). The prices range from low $300 to high $400 depending on size. The design is unique in that the wheels assembly collapses as the dog backs up (so that it can sit down). Then as the dog moves forward, the wheels assembly rises and supports the dog. Sorry but the cart in my video does not have that capability. If you email me at hoc.288lives@yahoo.com, I can share with you additional photos and instructions on how to build the cart. Also, instead of the single strap under the dog's belly, I made a larger, more comfortable sling that supports the body without pinch points so the dog can rest and without having to support its own weight.

  • @katiedotson704
    @katiedotson704 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is the best all around design i have found so far. Very doable with easily obtainable materials. Also easy to customize to your own needs. I did notice that the final chair seemed to be made with furniture grade PVC. Not a bad choice but increases the cost. Regular schedule 40 PVC does not hold up to UV light but it can be painted. So a custom paint job for Fluffy can be had. Add a few strips of reflective tape and you are all set for an evening stroll. When looking for wheels, think outside the box. Small to small/medium dogs could use bicycle training wheels. They even come with a bracket that could be used with a little design modification. And cool colors. If there is a bicycle repair shop near you check to see what they may have. Caring for a disabled dog is pricey enough without forking out $2-300 for a chair.

    • @hoc31rescue
      @hoc31rescue  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Katie, thanks for the comments, but for my Followers and viewers, please note, this wheelchair was made using only Sched 40 PVC and Sched 40 fittings. Furniture grade pvc is more expensive than Sched 40 PVC and has tapered fittings and no external markings. In the video at 1:49 the fittings can be seen to have no tapers and at 1:57 the PVC can be seen with external markings. Furniture PVC is manufactured with an external UV protection coat, but both Sched 40 and the thicker walled Sched 80 PVC have been tested and approved here in the US per the national safety standard (UL 651 requirements) for continuous outdoor exposure and use, so durability is not an issue. You are correct that using smaller diameter wheels will reduce some cost, however, larger diameter wheels will allow for far easier rolling over uneven surfaces (rocks, street curbs, etc), or non-hard surfaces such as gravel, grass or dirt.

      The dog's bodyweight is essentially supported by a sling that is attached to the two siderails of the cart. Yes, based on the amount of slack allowed in the sling (how low or high it hangs from the siderails), the dog does not have to use it's legs to support all of its own weight. (after the video was posted, I made a full-body sling from soft denim material that spanned side to side and front to back under the dog. This gave full support under the dog without pinch-points.) If you contact me by email (at hoc.288lives@yahoo.com), I can share with you additional photos of the cart build and the full-body sling.

      Bijay,
      I am not a veterinarian, so my opinion may not be correct for your situation. Your comment says your dog is limping. If it is a simple sprained muscle, then do not let the dog play or run and the problem will likely improve on its own. If the dog is in pain (will the dog allow you to touch the injured leg or foot?) Look for an injury or maybe an object stuck between the pads of his paw. If no obvious injury and if the dog is in pain, you should probably try and get a veterinarian to look at it for a more accurate diagnosis. If the dog is old, it may be arthritis or just muscle ache. I hope this may help you and your dog.

It failed to support the dog adequately and caused pressure points. I changed the design to a full-body sling.. almost like a hammock. It supports the dog from the chest all the way back to the hind-quarters. Very comfortable. I still used the no-pull harness along with this new full-body sling. If you will contact me via email at hoc.288lives@yahoo.com I will gladly share with you additional photos and measurements and tips on how to make the full-body sling. It was relatively easy to make using soft denim material.

    • @hoc31rescue
      @hoc31rescue  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you opened the link highlighted in the description under the video, you will be taken to the 3-D CAD model of the cart. A ribbon of icons are near the bottom of the view (Home, Rotate, Pan, Zoom, Section, Build Of Materials, Measure and Mass). Select any entity on the cart with the cursor and the various measurements of that entity will be displayed in the lower right corner of the screen. Just remember, the cart, as built, is basically a fixed size. This one is for a medium size dog. A taller, shorter, heavier, smaller, larger dog may require changes to the dimensions.

If you email me at hoc.288lives@yahoo.com, I will reply with the pics of the frame work and also of the body sling I made which provided better (and more comfortable) support than the single strap (around the dog's midsection) shown in the video.

      Jennifer McD26, my apology for the delayed response. I only just today saw your comment. The cart is not particularly difficult to build, but it is important to get the proper sizes and measurements based on the size of your dog. Unfortunately, building the cart without being able perform 'fit checks' with the dog, the end product my not be adequate or useable. I do not have step-by-step instructions, but if you will send an email to me at hoc.288lives@yahoo.com I will send to you detailed photographs of the build steps. From these photos, you can see the materials needed for the build and the basic measurements of the cut pieces. Everything is available at most home improvement stores.

      Yes, thank you. You can see in the first line of the description under the video..... " after this video was posted I replaced the single padded support strap under Figgy's belly with a FULL-BODY SLING I made using soft denim material. " I agree that the single strap (in the video) could be uncomfortable for some dogs. The soft denim material sling that I made for FIggy supported his body from his chest back to his pelvis, and yes, I added a 'comfort cut-out' that eliminated any pressure points around his genitals. (one of the women in the video is a veterinarian and she was checking specifically for any issues.) If you contact me via my email hoc.288lives@yahoo.com I will send to you the instructions and details of the build including the soft denim full-body sling.

    Does't look like right support around the stomach. Just one skinny strap cutting into it's belly.

    • @hoc31rescue
      @hoc31rescue  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At the time of this video, a wide, thick pad was attached to the belly strap. It didn't "cut" into the belly as you suggest, but it was likely uncomfortable. After the video, I made a full belly sling out of denim material that provided whole-body (front to back) support (like a hammock) that was attached to the side rails. Figgy was literally suspended on this hammock at a height that allowed him to use his legs.

      You are correct. If you will notice in the description under the video, In 2015, I included exactly that observation and the following statement - - "Also, after this video was posted I replaced the single padded support strap under Figgy's belly with a FULL-BODY SLING I made using soft denim material". Thank you for your concern, but the dog never used the strap shown in the video except for the first test drive. After that he always had a full-body sling that supported his weight evenly from his pelvis to his front shoulders and no straps over his back. If you are interested in the details of the full-body sling, I can share that with you as I have with many other commenters and viewers who have contacted me directly.
