- The Mexican native is the 2nd-winningest pitcher in that nation’s history, but the legacy he leaves behind is tattered with off-the-field fiascos and plenty of brushes with the law.

What’s really nice abt this is that this ends with some positive news, Esteban stopped himself from being involved in the drug ring which is tough, seeing as most people from Tijuana are already involved in gangs and cartels due to the environment around them. Esteban’s now a coach for a Mexican team and he’s been an assistant in the bullpen who’s team is doing really well right now
I’d chill out with the over generalization, there’s a big difference between “due to significant gang presence” and “most people from TJ are in gangs”
@@mattforbes221 that’s just the way it is down in Mexico, this is coming from a kid who’s been to Mexico a lot, who has parents from puebla (that’s a very gang effected area in mexico) and has heard stories from my parents. This isn’t coming from a white kid who doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Trust me bro, gang pressure is a big issue in mexico in its entirety.
@@jongar6672 hey I totally believe you, I just think word choice is important here. “Significant gang pressure” is different than “most people are in gangs,” and I think the latter wording can feed false, bigoted impressions certain folks have about Mexico and Central America as a whole.
@@mattforbes221 bro why are you feeding that much into this. Just because the way i said something doesn’t mean it sounds different when I say it here. Chill bro it’s not that serious
@@jongar6672alot of Mexicans are white
Ugeth Urbina sends his regards
So does Felipe Vásquez
Didn’t he murder someone?
@@dylanmalo8492 Urbina attempted to kill like 5 people with Machetes and making a bonfire out of them. Vasquez liked kids a little too much from his bio on b-ref. Both pretty bad.
That’s who I thought of as well
Wasn't Urbinas family held captive at some point? (Or something along those lines)
For all the Immaculate Grid nerds out there, Loaiza pitched for PIT, TEX, CHW, TOR, OAK, LAD, WSN, and NYY. Pretty good sneaky pick.
You’re the goat
Rich hill, Octavia dotel, Edwin Jackson. They all played for at least 13 teams
@@kenw2225 yeah but everyone knows them so they get guessed at a high percentage
@@peachykeen3194 terry mullholland and jesse orosco are sneaky good choices.
Gratz on 100k.
Ah yes, the pitcher who at age 31 suddenly put up one season that was 5x better than anything he did before or after. Nothing suspect about that at all.
Met him at a mall during ST one day. Very nice guy, we were probably 15. Engaged with us when we only asked for an autograph. A 1 minute interaction lasted at least 10. He was a CWS.
And yes, I was expecting a Michael Young cameo in this video, because every time I hear about Loaiza, I remember that glorious trade.
Me too... as a Jays fan 😭
Great video brother. After he got out of jail he wanted to get a fresh start, giving pitching clinics to kids in Mexico, then in 2023 got a job as assistant Pitching Coach of El Aguila de Veracruz (a team in the Mexican league, which is the same team Yasiel Puig played in 2021)
Referencing a article shows you are a professional. It why I subscribed
@JollyOlive Thank you for referencing your source. We need more of that on TH-cam.
Avoiding the ire of HBomberguy
I love your use of the Mario Odyssey Steam Gardens music.
8:12 Not the first playoff series to have a 3-0 comeback, the 1942 Stanley Cup did.
Loaiza's 2003 is even more remarkable than what's given here. His 2.90 ERA over 226.1 IP nets him 43 earned runs saved over what an average pitcher would've done in the same work load. That puts it within the top 200 pitching seasons in MLB history.
To put in perspective, Gerrit Cole's Cy young season this year was exactly 40 earned runs saved.
that's an absurd measurement that you came up with. somehow we traded him for an actual ace that helped us win a world series
@@nickrockway472 In doing the research for that stat, I saw his name pop up as one of the best pitching seasons of the 2000s and I had never heard of him before. Sometimes random people just put up huge seasons. A sub 3.00 ERA when the league ERA is close to 5.00 is huge.
He also had more k's than Halladay despite pitching something like 40 innings less, along with a much lower ERA
@@uberboomer8670 And they saved the exact amount of runs because of Halladay's 119 extra outs he was able to record.
Hes my uncle. His family is from San Ignacio so Sinaloa. Our family had beef back in the 70’s so we had to move tecate Baja California. Our family down there is involved in the drug trade
There were numerous teams to complete a reverse sweep after being down 3-0. One of the recent teams was the Philadelphia Flyers when they went the distance to win their Eastern Conference Semifinal in 2010 against the Boston Bruins.
Yep. The LA Kings did it in 2014 as well.
It’s happened 4 times in NHL history, but only the one time in ‘04 across the other 3 major NA sports leagues.
@@SurgingSpecs Probably has something to do with NHL games being 1-0 or 2-1 or 1-1, whereas the other 3 NA sports leagues have much larger scoring differentials. Probably also one more reason why Hockey isn't as popular as the NFL or NBA, and why I wish they'd move the pitching mound back 10 feet and a HBP should send the batter to 2nd base instead of 1st. Games are objectively more exciting when there are bigger scores.
@@SconnerStudiosHockey is also the most "luck-reliant" sport of the big 4. Bad and fluke goals happen all the time, and goalies randomly have the best streak of play of their life. The difference between luck in hockey vs baseball is that you need to chain together lucky happenings in baseball (fluke hits) for it to show up on the scoreboard, while luck is the difference between a goal or not in hockey.
As a result hockey is a sport that creates a ton of upsets. 8th seeds upset 1st seeds far more than in basketball for example.
Hockey has other reasons for being less popular, one of them being that its not a very democratic sport. It's by far the most expensive of the four to play recreationally, and the most regional given the need for ice.
@@SconnerStudios well in football it can't happen obviously. in basketball teams often have huge advantages in a series. in baseball and hockey you rarely see a team more than -200 to win a series. so it's way less likely to happen in basketball for that reason.
now look at the playoff formats- baseball has always had less playoff teams than the nhl. baseball only has three best of seven series per year, the LCS and World Series. Hockey has 15 best of seven per year since they have 4 rounds of playoffs and all four are best of 7. when you have five times as many series, and it's a sport where similar to baseball nobody has that big of an edge you should see more crazy comebacks.
hockey has had 15 best of 7 series since the 1986 and baseball has had 3 best of 7 series since 1985.
Interesting fact, it's because of his DUI in Oakland, alcohol was banned in the clubhouse.
As a Rangers fan I was well aware of Esteban Loaiza's role in helping bring Michael Young to Texas, so I was fully expecting the cameo. I had also seen him pitch for the Washington Nationals, and he even signed an autograph for me after the game despite getting out-pitched by Jake Peavy. I never forgot that kind gesture, so it was sad to see all of his legal issues after his retirement.
Can I just say the fact that Michael Young isn't in the Hall of Fame is an absolute disgrace
He didn't play long enough and didn't add enough defensive value. If he played 3-4 more quality years to build some counting stats or was a Chase Utley/Dustin Pedroia/Keith Hernandez quality defensive player, he'd be a HOF'er. I think his WAR is only like 20 something.
He had 2400 hits though. I don't know how he managed to get a gold glove because obviously his value was 99% bat 1% glove, and frankly, it's crazy he wasn't made a doubles hitting DH instead of thrown in the field.
Loved watching Michael young but I don't know if his career is all that different from Nick markakis
@@TheGilchrist707 Michael Young's WAR is actually lower. Shows how we look at baseball differently now. 30 years ago, Michael Young probably would have been a serious hall of fame candidate due to being a perennial all star with a batting title.
@@SconnerStudiosYou never watched him play if you you think he’s 1% glove.
5:30 “over 200 countries watching” really? no way that’s true
Lamarr Hoyt was also a White Sox pitcher who won the Cy Young and was arrested. He was my first autograph. Nice guy but I remember he did something bad.
Being a fan of all Chicago sports is trying, but holy shit is it tough being a white sox fan.
my father went to the ‘03 all star game a week after i was born and decided to take his baseball out of Magglio Ordonez hand to get Loiaza’s autograph instead 😂
We don't talk about Loaiza in Toronto.
We still love the guy in Tijuana; still goes and support little league, played softball and baseball with his old friends.
Allegedly Esteban Loaiza may or may not have cheated on Jenny Rivera's daughter.
As a white sox fan, he was a huge asshole, ignored my sister as a toddler asking for an autograph like she wasn't even there, luckily Konerko and Buerhle came up and signed for her and were both talkative and cool dudes. I know another sox fan who had a bad Esteban Loaiza experience while at a signing event
sub to this man!!!! only dude who puts effort into research and video quality in baseball!
Loiza was cool for the dodgers in his tenure ,
Just messed up !
As a Royals fan I remember him as a stud pitcher for the White Sox. Some of those Sox teams were absolutely stacked back in the day. I actually didn’t know he got busted for that though. Crazy stuff
Loaiza should have won the Cy Young that year, he got robbed
Do you think you could do a video on Tim Salmon sometime?
Where the Micheal young video at, love Micheal
Congrats on 100K Jolly! 🎉 It's awesome to see your channel get the recognition it deserves. 🙌🏼
The falling snow in the beginning of the video was good foreshadowing.
RA Dickey deserved to start the all star game in 2012 but wasn't given the start
Michael Young is the greatest ranger of all time. Still part of the organization to this day. Nolan Ryan is a close second greatest ranger.
arod was a way better ranger than ryan.
Love that you credited your main source here. So many “Remember this player?” TH-cam videos literally just rip straight from SABR’s BioProject without once mentioning it, it drives me nuts. Like, I’d still watch the video as I like having the *clips* of the things they write about in front of me, rather than going back and forth looking the clips up myself, but when you don’t mention where you got 90% of your video it makes me not want to.
Michael young was very underrated
Griffey > Thomas
love your channel 🫒
Here way before 100k
Love the Mario odyssey background music lately. Makes the videos 10x better
You left out one detail
He is obviously a cartel member
he had 20kilos, thats cartel numbers
his wife jenny rivera was obviously cartel too
they were cartel royalty
he blew 40mil, bcuz he was cartel and knew he could make money anytime he wanted
his wife jenny rivera was funded by a cartel
she probably died bcuz she was cartel
her plane was probably sabotaged
many mexican artists are intertwined with cartels
its a common thing, and an easy way to money launder
i know of fake famous mexican musicians and bands, who are funded, to wash money
its a big thing
artists bands supermarkets small businesses etc
all used to wash money
which is the cartels biggest problem
how to clean the money, so they can legally spend it in the US
there are 1000s of businesses across america and mexico that are fronts for washing money
when the lockdown happened? how did they stay alive?
bcuz they are fronts
and drug business was great with lockdowns and stimulus checks being handed out
esteban loaiza is obviously cartel
its probably in his family
oh he got away from cartels hes a coach now
newsflash, mexican baseball is a cartel money laundering situation too
look at the stands
theres like 500 people there
how could they stay afloat?
bcuz its all a front
every team in every state, is tied to their states cartel
the only question is, is loaiza tijuana cartel or sinaloa cartel or nueva generacion
- mexican american from LA CA
In my old PS1 games, like MLB 2004 (by 989 Sports) he was the best pitcher in the game usually.
Lol someone learned from the James Somerton fiasco. Love that for you Jolly! 100k soon big dawg 😤
Another Chicago standout from 2003 whose career took a difficult (albeit not criminal) turn is Mark Prior. In 2003, Prior went 18-6, with a 179 ERA+ over 211 IP, the best FIP in the NL, 245 K to 50 walks, and finished 3rd in Cy Young voting - and all this at the age of 22. At the time, Prior was thought to have "perfect" pitching mechanics. But the injuries started to pile up, and after pitching just 43.2 IP at age 25, Prior was out of MLB. He'd try to make comebacks all the way to 2013, but it didn't pan out. A guy who was being compared to Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens ended up pitching just 657 innings.
8:09 this didn’t sound quite right to me, but it passes on a technicality. there are a few “3-0 playoff comebacks in sports history,” and 3 of the are between NHL teams from the USA. however, the NHL could be viewed as a canadian league on the technicality that the original teams were from Canada and expansion occurred southward during the great depression.
jolly “smug boy” olive wins this round. i’ll like and subscribe so that i may battle him again over pointless minutia and grammatica in the future
I had the biggest Mandela effect about Esteban Loaiza's career. In my head, I thought his best years had been in Oakland as a part of that Hudson, Zito, Mulder rotation. I had completely forgotten that he even played for the White Sox or even worse, the Yankees 🤦🏽♂️ silly me 😅😂
Wasn't it said in the 04 ALCS after Game 4 at some point, I forget when, that Joe Torrre and the Yankees could go to either Félix Heredia or Esteban Loaiza, and the Yankees had lost confidence in both of them, or am I remembering that wrong. Joe Buck made a point to mention it during the ALCS, IIRC it was Game 6 before Esteban came in, though I may be misremembering that a bit.
Definitely not the only down 3-0 in a 7 game come back in North American sports history
Happened twice in the NHL but I guess most Americans don’t consider Hockey a major US sport
Pretty sad actually it’s only the toughest game in sports where players get stitches in the face and barely miss a shift and the Stanley Cup is the hardest Trophy to win in NA sports
People think it’s the NFL but that league you can’t hit anymore and the average play last what 3-5 seconds
And you can’t run out of bounds in Hockey
Baseball players can’t play with a bit of rain and Basketball players are soft and need maintenance days off
Hey Jolly... Mad respect for constantly pointing out the underrated guys in your vids. Fucken love the shout outs to more than a few guys I followed as a kid.
Loaiza was the man. He was overshadowed while on the south side by the Cubs finally making the playoffs & the whole Bartman thing. Wish he would have stayed on the Sox longer.
Michael Young was always over looked because of guys like Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter played the same time he did but he was a consistent American League all star who was consistent put up a low key hall of fame career. Looking forward to a future video on him you probably do 😂👍
As bad as the White Sox fans have had it, I’d argue that Seattle Mariners fans have had it worse. Given that the Mariners have never even been to a WS, let alone won one. Plus the 21 year playoff drought, it’s hard to beat.
I am 11 minutes into a 13 minute long video and still have no idea as to why this pitcher ended up behind bars. I know all of his stats, stats of other players, and how many records his wife sold, but not why I clicked on the video. I'll finish the last 2 minutes but I highly doubt they are even going to mention him being behind bars or why. If they do, they will just gloss over it.
I'm not anti drug per say but two years behind bars isn't enough. I know he got deported also but that's too much for just two years and he admitted to intent to distribute. It's not like he had a pound of weed on him he could've legitimately bought for use himself, he had several kilos of cocaine.
Ehhhh we know what really happened, he started using spider tack, that’s how he went from being bad to being good.. 80% of the time I’m right all the time..
You think it's tough being a White Sox fan? Try being an Angels fan since 2014 lol.
Fortunately (unfortunately?) He ends up on the "low end" of "heinous MLB off field disasters".
Jolly Olive NHL has 4 teams to overcome a 3-0 series deficit in the Stanley Cup Playoffs
8:10 Yeah, the Leafs came back from a 3-0 deficit to win the Stanley Cup in 1942.
The Rangers traded Loaiza for Michal Young? Boy did they ever get the better side of THAT deal
Eh, thought there'd be more to his relationship with jenny and his federal drug charge than just an under minute narration. A lot and great setup but left more to be desired.
Imagine if a nobody got arrested with a million dollars of cocaine. They ain’t serving only two years and change.
I take it this guy has never watched hockey considering there are multiple times a team has overcome a 3-0 deficit
He should have stayed in his beloved Mexico, where they don’t enforce laws as strict as in the US
thought this would be about Felipe Vazquez, one of the best closers in recent years but with some terrible off the field issues
you’re absolutely right, us sox fans probably have it the worst, just a cherry on top for one of our best players to have a bunch of run ins with the law
I want a full michael Young video
Another day
another of my favorite youtubers pitying my White Sox fandom :L
Jolly, the NHL would like to have a word with you about 3-0 comebacks
You forgot he also had an ongoing affair with Jenny Rivera's daighter.
Guys like Jolly and foolish give me hope that I’ll make it in the content game.
He used to pitch in our adult league post retirement was probably slanging that sh
There have been 4 3-0 comebacks in NHL history...
Trust us, Jolly. Noone hates the Sox more than white sox fans themselves 😂
I'm a Rockies fan. The most irrelevant sports team in pro sports.
I'm unsubbing and then waiting to sub again to be Mr. 100k
My dad got his last autograph at the Sox Fest before the feds got him.
"Over 200 countries watching", eh?
Love the video, however 8:07 is not accurate! There have been a couple of those in the nhl
Being a Sox fan a perfect storm of being invisible and pain.
Wsx held on to Ken Williams way too long. He was a prick
Babe wake up new jolly upload
Weird thing to get a search warrant for a house over 😂 set up
pirates fans have been tested more than white sox imo
White Sox fans, there’s a video for us!
He was almost meant to be hated, even if he was on your team
Esteban in jail garb looks like job bluth
Hockey is not an American sport? 8:13
He's a coach now in the Mexican League
3 years for 40 lbs of blow? insane !
Denny McClain ????
30 g winner
I was wondering where he was...😏🤙
Interesting fact about Steve that most people don't know. He was a catcher before he started pitching in highschool, at Mar Vista Highschool. My grandfather and father were the coaches that converted him into a pitcher. I actually spent a lot of time around him as a kid, and still have a glove he used in a MLB game, a game ball, and a signed rookie card. The last time I saw him, was at my grandfather's funeral, quite a few years ago. It's sad that he got caught up in the things he did, in the end.
He actually briefly unretired to pitch semi professionally in summer 2016 at 45 as a player-coach in a league mostly occupied by Mexican college players
I havent heard Loaiza's name since like... MVP Baseball on the original Xbox?
Still have his size medium grey Sox jersey lmao. I was 6 in that 03 year and one of my first sport memories was me and my dad watching him tear up KC for 11 strikeouts.
👏🙌🎉CONGRATULATIONS 🎉🥳🎊🍾🍻

Loaiza never had a team nor did he play with the biggest variety of teams. But I find his trajectory interesting.
Congrats on 100k Jolly!
