Holy cow! Paul McCartney replied! How awesome is this! This is the coolest thing I've ever seen for someone to take time out of their busy schedules to recognize their fans. How awesome!
Awesome. I was young when my father died. I instantly was comforted by the Beatles music by chance of a radio show the night of his funeral. The Beatles, especially Uncle Paul, practically, with help from mom, raised me. I went into the band at school, learned sax, trumpet, and such, then after school I grabbed a guitar, and a Beatles chord chart book, and now I have a few guitars and a Hofner bass hanging on my wall and play EVERYDAY. I listen to the Beatles EVERYDAY, it has now been 42 years that find myself all walrussy and BECAUSE of the lads, IN MY LIFE, ALL MY LOVING and my RUBBER SOUL has been a lane of pennies, and fields of strawberries. Too bad the influenced never had the same amount of talent as those 4. TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS, however, I douby anyone will ever be that in tune with the human element as those simple guys along the Mersey.
music is almost mathematical and should be symmetrical ( at least in the 50s-90s) So there were usually 4 lines to a verse, 3 or 4 lines for chorus, and 2 lines for a middle bit. A solo, and overdubs, harmonies come later Advertisers gave limits to song lengths, so 2=3.5 minutes was just the standard for songwriting. That structure was a great scaffold for Lennon and McCartney to build their early chops on. Later, when they became the medium, they pressed the limits over the money lords to stretch songs to 4, 5, 7 minutes long or more. Plus they expanded that scaffold, adding interesting twists and turns that would amaze the world.
Superb session. Paul can play the favorites and snow the best of them under, but this was fresh. Dana and David played their part and brought out the best. Paul responded to your recognition of the collaborative process in action in the Get Back scenes and it really brought out his sincerity. Opening up about letting himself off the hook for the fabled breakup of the Beatles was astounding. Finally, remembering Farley and the iconic sketch that everyone who has subsequently interviewed Sir Paul knows they sound like in their head! I had to listen through from the needle drop, you had me glued to my spot for the duration.
I don’t think there’s any better way to stay young at heart than to be a British rock n roll star. Paul, Ringo, Mick, Keith, Pete Townsend, Roger Daltry are all very old men; but their passion as musicians and artists enables them to shame recording artists 1/4 their age. Or maybe it’s because the music they’ve created is so special. It will be celebrated centuries from now. Not many artists can make that claim. They certainly can. Thank God for post war Britain.
This episode was very special. I guess I’m the fly on the wall this time. To have the chance to listen to three people who I have never met, but who I think I know, was really fun. Hi Guys Listening from Australia 🇦🇺( I’m English 🏴though ) Love the podcast & great interview Paul McCartney is a legend 👍 The Beatles are the greatest band that ever was , is and will be
Enjoyed the chat, thanks for making your schedules and situations work to fit Sir McCartney in, I know I’d drop everything if I had a chance to chat with Paul McCartney, even if it was just for a minute. And that would definitely result in some version of the Farley sketch.
28:40 I love it when Paul brings up his bass influences. I always hear him in Paul’s playing and I’m so glad every time Mr. McCartney brings him up… he’s a legend!
Really enjoyed this. Dana and David did a great job interviewing Paul who is charming and just a regular guy. I came of age musically with Paul in 1967. First two albums we obtained were "Sgt Pepper" and "The Doors."
About being the bass player in The Beatles: "I never wanted that job. Bass player was the worst job in the group, it is always the fat guy" ROTFL. Paul is so funny.
Such a full life with stories behind the story. With a brief touch on Wings, would love to get the background on creativity, Linda and the band. Thank you for bringing Paul to the rest of us. Bring him back.. he'd return.
Let’s be honest here everyone. I can’t be the only one who at times was going “wait a minute, is this just Dana doing an impression the whole time…”. Great interview guys. I’m so glad you are doing this podcast!
I had the honor of sitting and chatting with Ray Davies from The Kinks awhile back and he told me when all the bands in London heard that the Beatles were moving there from Liverpool they were terrified. I asked 'Why? did you think they were going to take all your gigs?" He said "No! We thought they were going to beat us all up!"
Great podcast, you guys elicited a lot of material that has never been brought out from McCartney including the base playing, cutting edge stuff, great work David Spade and Dana carvey

Wait, wtf? That’s the skill Dana has in negative qualities. If you were to name the person to demonstrate it worst, it’s Dana, but at least David tries. Dana says he sucks at that, then steamrolls over the guest and hijacks every single interview. Ironically, often with his very tired impersonation of Paul.
I love Paul, he’s a great interviewee. This is my favorite podcast but have to say the interview is not an easy listen with Spade sounding like Beavis and Dana talking about himself nonstop - let it breath boys!
I disagree completely. When I was ready for a change of conversation David led the way. And people who listen are fans of Dana, David and SNL.. we WANT to hear from the too.
@Dan Buell I agree. I felt frustrated by all the times Dana cut him off, went off on tangents about himself, etc., and David’s inappropriate laughter was pretty weird. Paul was very patient, but geez. At least David acknowledged it at the end.
I'm so happy to hear Paul actually talking about one of the things that I love the most about The Beatles, that none of their songs sounded the same, and that is especially true of the white album, which ties with 'The Golden Age of Wireless' by Thomas Dolby for my favorite album of all time. That's how I approach making my own albums, but this kind of variety seems to scare off most listeners. It's extremely impressive that the Beatles somehow managed to overcome that bias with the white album.
Thanks for mentioning Dolby. I know his name only from the Toys (1992 movie) soundtrack and always loved The Mirror Song, which has been on rotation in my life since 1992/93 (bought the soundtrack as a kid). But his name was always a mystery to me. Never occurred to me that the Internet has since been created and I could've looked him up all this time! Will check out that album asap.
@@EmpyreanLightASMR Thomas Dolby's first two solo albums are extraordinary. His work from that period and earlier, solo and with with others, is genius. His work after that is extremely disappointing.
@@EmpyreanLightASMR actually that's a very common career trajectory with recording artists, I'm afraid. I've seen it countless times in my adult life as both a listener and lover of great music, and a composer and musician myself. His work became increasingly commercial, much less personal and emotionally connected, and uninspired and unimaginative. He used to conjure worlds and make you cry with his incredible command of synthesizer performance technique. His synthesizer work on 'Waiting for a Girl Like You' by Foreigner is legendary, and truly the stuff of gods and magic. After this he moved to California, shed his Englishness in favor of whatever the hell glitz and glam he thought he might find in Los Angeles, and made ring tones and gave TED Talks. It's hard to believe it's the same person.
I love how it took dana and david a little while to settle down into a good interview. So relatable! I love how at one point it seems like dana may do both parts of the interview, dana and paul, as paul listens haha! And yes i think paul knows how “live and let die” goes guys hahha. Love this podcast!
54:20 that's why I love the Anthology series, three double disc albums with alternate tracks or takes or just pure inspiration walking in before it's polished out and all of them would have been just as big of a hit as the master
The Anthology series gave the Beatles another 50 years of extreme relevancy and massive sales. I was 17 when that series, and while a casual BEATLES fan and big McCartney fan (Hope and Deliverance had come out in 1993) but ANTHOLOGY took it to another level. I got the Blue album and then went into the whole catalog by spring ‘96!
Thanks Dana and David for this great Paul interview. I was 11 when The Lads played on Ed Sullivan Feb 9, 1964. I was hooked and the next day at school everybody was talking about The Beatles even the Teachers. I did meet Paul, George and Ringo in London 1973. John was in the states. I did not see The Beatles in concert but I did see them as solo Beatles. I did share this podcast to my Beatles group. beatlespeatlesfans1964. Thank you.
These are wonderful it’s nice and long and I feel like I got to sit and hang out with your guests . Plus you ask questions about things I don’t always know about so the answers are very interesting .. I love to hear you all laughing at the funny parts . I’m 55 so the Beatles have been the soundtrack to my life .. only one other appearance on James Corden car pool kareokee made me feel like I got to know this amazing human more ! Thank you so much for this podcast !
Considering this is probably the 5,500,000th interview he has done in his lifetime I am amazed he doesn’t seem jaded and doesn’t just phone it in. Good on you Sir.
My Favorite Musician of ALL TIME. Saw him in 2016. 3 1/2 hrs. I was exhausted, never mind Paul. He was 73 years old then. Greatest show I've ever seen.

i'm glad dave brought up chris' sketch... remember when you guys interviews paul mccartney and totally fanboyed on him for an hour? ...that was awesome.
I listened to the Beatles the first time in 1964 on WLS Radio in my home in small town Indiana. I was 12. Much later in life in 2018 I was in Liverpool and spent t time at the Cavern. I wonder if Paul has been back to plY?
Remember when you were in the Beatles? That was awesome. David is as giddy as a schoolgirl... ha, I would be, too. The 30:00 mark where they're discussing the personal pronouns in Beatles songwriting. Gear!
Sir Paul is one of my biggest influences on bass. The hassle is, the more I play his music and the more I write basslines (with 35 years experience), the more I realize I will never be even half as good.
I love that the interview reaches the point where both Spade & Carvey are badly singing Beatles songs back to Paul! Only wish could have seen his face at that point
40:36 "That spirit was always there - from the minute I met John - till the minute The Beatles broke up... and beyond actually, ya know. There was always that sort of... we're just two guys goofin' are way through the world."

@@EmpyreanLightASMR Thomas Dolby's first two solo albums are extraordinary. His work from that period and earlier, solo and with with others, is genius. His work after that is extremely disappointing.
@@singlesideman Interesting, surprising to hear. But thank you, I'll check out the earlier stuff first.
Forever Beatles fan! Laura,Romania
this interview will haunt them for eternity
😂well said
Thanks Dana and David for this great Paul interview. Thank you.
Thank's for the inspiration. I'll try to be more creative with my life after listening to all three of you artists.
😊😊😊😊
I thoroughly enjoyed this, thanks to all three of you!
The Fanboy approach and nervous laughing is difficult to endure in the beginning. Love the show.
Considering this is probably the 5,500,000th interview he has done in his lifetime I am amazed he doesn’t seem jaded and doesn’t just phone it in. Good on you Sir.
How ironic that the most beloved artist of all time could have ever thought people hated him. He stays humble still.
Listened to every podcast so far. This was my fav along with Lovitz . Wanted so bad for there to be video to see Paul’s digs.
Love the way Chris Farley was actually star struck by Paul on SNL when he did the talk show interview skit❤😂
Amazing artist and uderrated god of rock... his solo stuff should be on the Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums List for sure.
My Favorite Musician of ALL TIME. Saw him in 2016. 3 1/2 hrs. I was exhausted, never mind Paul. He was 73 years old then. Greatest show I've ever seen.
Jeebus crumble, Dana, let Paul finish his sentences! Paul was super gracious in this in this interview. I understand and share Dana's enthusiasm, but holy Chris Farley skit! Let the man talk!
Oh god Dennis Miller at the beginning. And then a bit of “RINGY-DOO” with Macca!
Y’all got one of the best interviews out of PauI’ve ever heard and it’s probably because David is so smart
Please show us the videos of these podcasts.
This was the Best ! Thank you !
This was great! Thanks, boys!!
i'm glad dave brought up chris' sketch... remember when you guys interviews paul mccartney and totally fanboyed on him for an hour? ...that was awesome.
Love how Paul gradually opened up more and relaxed as the interview went on
Guys, it would be good to have video along with these audio casts.
omg that all made me wanna cry!
I love how Dana Carvey would impersonate Paul McCartney and the other Beatles during the interview. Funny!
I thought I was the only one lol
Thanks you❤
@@paulmccartney8408 thank YOU! If this is the real Paul McCartney, you just made my life by replying to my comment.
@@marif936 hahahah,best believe…..I am glad I did❤️
@@paulmccartney8408 faker! have a nice day.
Not sure if Paul noticed...he did not say anything about that!
Great interview. Thank you
You are welcome
Thank you too❤
I listened to the Beatles the first time in 1964 on WLS Radio in my home in small town Indiana.
Gear!
Thank you, gentlemen!
That’s was awesome, thk you guys. Peace 😎🙏🏼
Hey Paul, David, & Dana... I can't wait until I'm able to hang out with you fun guys again.
Much love - TakeXare 💋
Hahahah,maybe soon
Thank you ❤
Hi Kerry
See you in Arizona 😊

Awesome interview!
Great interview!
I saw Paul on 2002, great show, tight band. Dude played over 3 hours. McCartney rocks. Great interview here, lovely.
Paul looks good here with his gray. It’s more natural.
It was neat to hear you already working on Teddy Boy. Would like to hear the story on that.
