  • Will Muschamp was fired as South Carolina head coach last season in a move that ended up setting off a chain reaction of coaching changes whereas just months prior it was thought that College Football would largely go without the usual coaching carousel cycle due to COVID. On Late Kick Live Ep 146 Josh Pate discussed a series of articles from TheState.com in which emails from Ray Tanner and several notable Gamecocks officials and alumni were recently made public in response to a FOIA request. What can be learned from the e-mail dump and what potential bigger lesson could be drawn from their contents? Also Josh shares his updated feelings on Shane Beamer and where the South Carolina football program could be headed. How do you see the Gamecocks doing this year? I was silly like everyone now but I miss having 4 undefeated teams. Miss the debate of who really was the nat champ.
Bcs and playoffs didn't make anything better it just robbed kids of unique special success by our greed wanting to define 132 colleges down to 1 winner .
Reforming reform doesn't make anything better. Painting a terd .
Its killed regional fan bases. When usc and ucla was undefeated out west , notre dame or penn up north east and sec champ down south all finished undefeated and shared titles , we all won! That in it self was amazing for thise kids and the region.
that generated regional vs region mass debate between fans who they thought was champs and it was awesome .
We have messed up what was a great organically built system .

It does seem absolutely crazy, however, how many "coaching searches" have we seen done by so called "expert search firms" end up being complete garbage? Ultimately, I don't think there's a magic formula for picking a successful HC. So many things have to synch up that I guess finding a guy on Twitter is as good as hiring a multi million dollar frim to search for a coach.

Man coming across this late, but Josh you hit the nail on the head on this one! I would even take it further about the bad hires, and say sometimes coaches need more time, then what is allotted to them! However, this day age it is win or your done in three or four! Long gone are the days a coach gets to build a program, and 5-7 years or even longer to do so. Because when you make a bad hire, and turn around and let them go you’re further behind then when you started. Now hindsight is 20/20, and out of all the names that were floated out there Beamer may have been the only one that wanted the job! It appears Tanner may have gotten this one right, but year three is just around the corner, and if another year of improvement is definitely what is needed! Now, Kirby Smart’s wife said they were almost headed to Columbia, but when Georgia fired Richt, if we as Gamecock fans are being honest, a better job opened up, and we see what happened there. As a South Carolina Guy, and having been one for 30 plus years. I am loving the Beamer hire, and the fact he is young, and could be with South Carolina for many years! Great stuff and perspectives as always! Spurrier was an incredible get, but he was closer to the end then the beginning. Showed he had a little magic, but just not enough! It’s also wonderful that Shane Beamer has been around some legends in the College Football circle, and these first years it has shown!

It's not ALL about the coaches, its about the players too. The good schools keep rolling w/ good quality recruits and there is no equalizing force (i.e., draft, salary cap, etc.,) to enable the other schools to get good quality players. Something has to be done to help parity, otherwise we're going to always have a top heavy sport.
