What's happening in SC is that the son of a great coach is becoming a great coach himself and he's building one heck of a program. SC beat our butts and then they beat Clemson's butts. TWO top 10 wins is NOT BAD. Respect to Shane Beamer and SC

The columnist Beamer was attacking there is Gene Sapakoff of the Charleston Post and Courier. Sapakoff wrote a column heavily criticizing the Loggains hire. After Beamer asked if anyone knew that Loggains turned down an OC job at another SEC school last year (it was Kentucky), Sapakoff--instead of calling around asking other journalists or contacts who that school was--Tweeted out if anyone knew what the school was.
Beamer was mad because he felt the media criticizing the hire were lazy and made snap judgments. When Sapakoff Tweeted out asking who the other SEC school was, he proved Beamer's point.

Imo, Beamer is 100% in the right. There's no accountability in the media these days, and they're crapping on his guy. He's right to defend him.
Also, when coaches, or really anyone, criticize the media, the only people I tend to see complain is others in the media because they want to be untouchable. Free speech means if you're gonna be an ass, you're probably gonna get called an ass. An honest coach that protects his people is a massive W.

I disagree. Media is just as accountable as everybody else. Like beamer said, the media has just as much of an effect on recruiting as the program. Ergo, they are a part of the process, ergo, they are subject to scrutiny by the Athletic staff of USC. Period. Beamer is a new age of coach. And change is hard. Saddle up, it's a long road to the top.

Josh, I really enjoy your work and I'd say generally you're not wrong here. But I think what this gets down to is Shane recognizing the need to control the narrative of his program, at least as much as he can. Shane alluded to this later in the presser when he was asked about college coaches vs. pro coaches and he said pro coaches get to coach 100% of the time, and college coaches are recruiting 90% of the time and coaching 10%. In the college game it's all about recruiting, all the time. He knows that and he knows all of the negative reaction to Loggains - from media and some knucklehead fans too - hurts recruiting and perception. I think he took a calculated risk and did what he felt like he had to do, and I'd say he wasn't wrong either. Of course he's going to bet on himself and his new hire. If he wasn't willing to do that then Loggains clearly isn't the right guy.

      @brianmorrison3741 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Journalism is so out of control in this country now and so unprofessional. You just have to understand that Shane Beamer is the kind of guy that puts it all out there for everyone to see. If he's pissed it's going to show. I think his transparency is one of his greatest strengths. What do all the recruits and their parents say when they commit to South Carolina? They talk about how they love Beamer's honesty and how "real" he is. If someone does indeed throw this back in his face down the line then he's man enough to take it and admit he made a mistake. This Gamecock really likes him as a person and as a coach. LET'S GO COCKS.

THOSE articles can and do affect recruiting, as well as may influence current players who may be thinking 'portal'. South Carolina is still in play for multiple offensive players. So, to me, Shane Beamer had no choice with the first National Signing Day approaching, but to call the writers to task and show uncommitted recruits why he chose who he chose and his vision for the program. Remember that some of those same writers didn't like the Beamer hire to begin with, because he had no HC experience. Maybe, some are just doubling down, with "See, I told you."

This isn't a good take by Josh. Let's pretend Beamer did exactly as Josh suggested and ignored the media. It would not matter at all. The press in SC have been anti-SC for a long time. They were just as critical against HBC when he was there. Its just what they do. The State is perhaps the worst when it comes to bias. They have been outright vicious towards SC historically speaking. I'm glad Beamer took a stand and put the harpies in their place.

A few observations: much of criticism leveled at this hire is based on Loggains' relative lack of success in the NFL. By that same/limited metric both Spurrier and Saban would have been unacceptable choices for SEC schools. Beamer's blast at the local media seems less a case of thin skin than attempt to let his new coach know that he has his back. (It's hard to believe that the nonstop criticism of Satterfield had nothing to do with his recent jump to Nebraska.) Finally, having recently moved to SC from the Bay Area I am surprised by the level of negative reporting on South Carolina men's sports. While it could never be said that the Bay Area sportswriters were "homers" they were far more even in their reporting that what I've seen here. I suspect it has a lot to do with the relative quality of the journalists rather than a superior quality of Bay Area sports teams.

When you’re getting hit on all sides from the media on how your handling these things, I think the least of his worries is saying hey this guy who chose to come here is qualified. This keeps the heat off your hires and let’s the media know who you talk to about issues with the team.

I think this is less about thin skin and more about setting the tone. The Carolina fan base (I among them) are used to criticizing the program because there has been so much to complain about for years and years. We are used to poor decisions and bad hires hindering a school that can and should be competitive. Beamer came in and has the program going in the right direction at Mach 3.2. People are still conditioned to think we will slip at any moment. We know the fan base got to Marshawn Loyd this season, Marshawn spoke about his frustration several times this year. I bet it played a roll in a kid leaving and Beamer is using this as an opportunity to break us of some old habits. It's a high risk move but one I respect.

  • @zacharyscott6779

Saying this as a Clemson fan... but the media (and some of the Carolina fanbase) better be careful with Beamer. Like Josh said, Beamer sometimes doesn't like to be called out, even though his two years there have been quite good. All season people wanted Satterfield gone, the Gamecocks beat Tennessee and Clemson back to back, suddenly they beg he stay. Shane makes a hire to replace him, nobody is happy with it. Remember when Spurrier had this team the best it's ever been but the media didn't like him? It could be the same thing happening again down the road. We will see. And GG to Carolina this year. They beat us fair and square.

I think the whole thing was that Shane said he had a bunch of big names that were interested. People generally assumed big names in college football. So when rumors were going around about someone who has never coached a college snap there was obviously some unrest. I think he can be a good hire; he definitely seems to have more football IQ than Satterfield did. But with the only thing people have to go off of is the stats in the NFL (being fairly bad), obviously, people won't be super happy until he proves that he can be successful

I'm assuming that the "coordinator job in the SEC" that he's referring to is the Kentucky OC job. Loggains was considered, but I don't think he was a finalist. Pretty sure Stoops was dead set on hiring someone out of the McVay/Shanahan tree

At first I was sad to see Loggains leave the hogs and take Trey Knox with him, but it looks like the hogs got a slam dunk hire for a replacement. So here is to both programs hopefully benefiting from the events.

I have to go against every fiber of my being here and stick up for my fellow Shane here. I not only respect him for doing this, I also encourage him to do more of this. Just for that I hope the cocks go undefeated in the regular season next year.

I disagree that Sean Beamer can't be wrong. Yes he can. He's under contract. He's been paid and stands to get paid a lot more. He can go take another job anytime he wants. And if Loggains doesn't work out, he is arguing that failure doesn't mean someone isn't a good coach. If Sean really believes that, what does he care if we have a disappointing year next year? It's no sweat off his back. It doesn't "define" him. It's the fans that have been waiting for this team to break through to be worthy of their incredible support and the huge finical investment put into the facilities for the Student Athletes, that will have to suffer like they are ground hog day, year after year.

Shane Beamer is definitely wrong on this issue. Notice how he only stated that we hired a guy that interviewed at multiple places. In translation South Carolina was the only one who didn't decide he wasn't the right guy. Dude literally has been voted worst OC in the NFL TWICE. Also Beamer stated all these other coaches I talked to said he was a nice guy notice how he didn't mention whether or not they said he was actually a good coach.

Did you not understand Anything Coach Beamer Said 🤣🤣🤣
Coach Beamer is telling the Post and Currier “Reporter-Gene” that he doesn’t appreciate his Negativity Towards The SC Program!!!
That’s what i Got Outta That Anyways! 👍👍👍
Coach Beamer just says that Coach Loggains was “called” about 4 jobs and i believe had turned one Job Down.
Where’d you get that he was voted as the worst oc in the NFL? Who does that?
News Reporters? 🤔🤔🤔The Good Guy is Exactly What Coach Beamer Is Looking For…
      Mostly For Recruiting Purposes-
His OC abilities and play scheming skills are a Plus!
      Coach Beamer is Building…
      Culture
      Culture and more
      Culture!!!
      Coach Dowell Fits!!!👍
So it’s only natural that he would take up for His OC!!!
      Spurs Up👍👍👍

I agree with you, Josh. The media will become more antagonistic now that he's pushed back against them. Never make it us vs them....that will haunt you down the road. It's a lose-lose situation.

Dowell Loggains was garbage in the NFL. "Not as successful as he wanted" Bro he lead offenses that ranked LAST. I love Beamer as a Gamecock fan, I appreciate all he's done. But dude having to come up and defend the hire immediately is an issue. That means you shouldn't have made the hire. No matter how the guy turns out. It ain't just the media. The fanbase is like wtf are you doing? Like it feels like Beamer hired a guy he wanted as opposed to a qualified coordinator. The guy was an OC for 4 NFL teams. It's not like he had one crack at it and failed. He had SUSTAINED failure. Like the entire fanbase is screaming to hire someone else. They screamed to get rid of the last guy cause he was inconsistent. Beamer is a great coach and recruiter. He galvanizes men. But he's also stubborn to a fault. Loggains was the OC for the Adam Gase Dolphins and Jets. Some of the worse offenses I've ever seen. Like he ruined two franchise QBs. No one not even Beamer can convince me this hire makes sense. We have to win the SEC and the National title for this man to change his reputation. Literally he has to move mountains.

I kinda sorta agree with your point but college football and NFL are almost like two different sports. Remember Nick Saban was average at best while head coach of the Dolphins. Also you remember Joe Brady? Offensive coordinator of arguably the most explosive offense in college football history? The Panthers thought they got a homerun hire but that didn't go too well. Dowell Loggains technically has not failed at the college level so there's no evidence to show he will just because he was unsuccessful in the NFL.

This dude seriously comes off as very insecure. He has rabbit ears. SC fans are ok with it because he just beat UT and Clemson out of nowhere after it looked like he was gonna have another terrible year. I guess a blind squirrel finds a nut. But had he not got those two wins and was acting like this, SC fans would be saying the same. Winning cures all...but he better win at a high level if he's gonna act like this.

This guy could be a good coach or a flake. Doesn't matter if he fails, his daddy's name got him the job and he is set for life financially. NO ONE would have hired this guy to be an SEC head coach, based on his resume, if his Dad wasn't Frank Beamer.

South Carolina won 11 games back to back just 10 years ago. Its very capable of being a perennial playoff team once expanding to 12 teams
