    Another great video Kip. Keep them coming. Two quick comments though. First, the leg from SMS to the IAF is a feeder route and the altitude published is just like an MEA. ATC should assign you an altitude here. It is not a segment of the approach so don't go down to that altitude without prior instruction. Second and more important, the missed approach point on the ILS is not the runway threshold, it is DA and the missed approach should begin as soon as you reach that altitude if you have no further visual clues.

    Finally someone who zooms in properly on the instruments when he instructs so you can clearly see what it looks like when you perform the tasks.
    The majority of the channels that instruct sits in the pilot's seat and demonstrate on the instruments in front of the copilot so it is difficult to see properly what is going on.
    Thank you so much for the great videos, now I will watch them all and hopefully learn how everything works.

    Awesome - I almost feel like this vid was 110% for me! I did eventually work out the G1000Nxi for consistent ILS approaches back in December and was able to do a whole flight with a keyboard as a result, but this made it so much clearer step by step. The g1000nxi has a lot of information on the screen which is easy to miss if you don't know what every dot or icon means and when things are genuinely activated and going to work as expected.

    Thank you so much for this. By far the best video on ILS landings on TH-cam. I just started MSFS, and I am not a pilot. I have no interest in being one yet, and the other videos I’ve seen on this stuff almost made me quit altogether. They are all full of pot jargon and everyone in the comments is some 40-year master pilot. None of it made any sense. I just want to play this game and learn how to use autopilot and have fun. I don’t want an hour and a half video using pilot jargon that I don’t understand being taught by people who feel high and mighty and talk down to people like me like we don’t belong.
    Long and short of it: thank you for teaching like a human. Thank you for talking to me like I am a human. Thank you for helping me have fun with this new game that I like. If I ever become a pilot in the future, this video would have been the lynchpin.

    You can Start the Climb as soon as you go Missed at your Decision Height that is why on the chart you see the UP pointing arrow prior to the MAP. Now if you were doing the LOC only approach you will see that you are allowed to Level Off at 920 and continue at that ALT to the MAP where you HAVE to go missed.
    Again though you could have started your climb before the MAP on a LOC Approach but then you give up the chance of getting the runway environment visual an thus being able to descend to land. That said you can not start your TURN until you Cross the MAP.
    Also this Approach is a great example of why you have two Nav Radios. The second Nav Radio is so that you have the SNS VOR and the RADIAL already dialed in for the Missed... It's not an airliner doing an auto land requiring both FMS be tuned into the Loc :)
    As always great video Kip

    • @gregdildine99
      @gregdildine99 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s the WT NXi (don’t know about the real unit) that tunes BOTH Nav radios to the LOC. I do though agree with Les about using Nav 2 as he describes.

    • @LesOReilly
      @LesOReilly 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gregdildine99 That seems to be a "NXi" simulator thing which WT is basing most of these kinds of decisions off. Then manual is not very clear regarding it either. However another user a while back posted video (real unit) showing that it would not force it into NAV 2 when on the GPS and Auto Tunning... either way you should be able to setup Nav 2 after just fine..

    Kip, well produced video! Curious what editing software you use? While this video is surely helpful for many and illustrates quite a lot about the NXi, perhaps you could double check IFR procedures with a CFII (I’m not one) I definitely appreciated the reminder to aviate, navigate, communicate. As others have commented, probably the most important missed approach item is not flying below the minimum altitude. I also might suggest additional focus on airspeeds and power management especially with AP engaged. Thanks as always for your videos!

    Thank you very much for the chartfox tip. I finally found the charts for the airport I am using. Just need to convert to png for my VR pilot bag.
    I also very much like how well prepared, paced and produced this video was.
    At @16:05, I didn't understand VNAV. What does this mode do? Thus far, I only know VS and FLC as ways of getting to the 1700 set point. Does it calculate a descent slope based on the flight plan having altitude settings for both way points? I don't really know what VNAV is, but I've only seen it in other videos where you capture the glide slope, so I thought that was its (specialized) use. But you say in the video that you set in this in case you don't capture the GS. So, I realize I have always seen VNAV in conjunction with "APP", so I don't know what it does when used in isolation.
    From your explanation, it seems that the VNAV and APP (GS capture) has the same respective function as when you are laterally using HDG and NAV (CDI capture).
    Do you have more videos on the missed approach? How does the SUSP work? When does it engage and how do you know when, in a more elaborate MA procedure, to give the reigns back to the AP? I assume you don't have to pass 400 feet to do a missed approach. Like, if you got a landing gear warning or something. What then?

    Hey Kip, thank you for your new tutorial with ILS approach. Yesterday I sent you a question about the "No data" indication on the HSI in another of your video. On the G1000 interface, you can see "No Data" and then when you're in range of the ILS radio, you can see the ILS name. It's not the case on the G1000 Nxi HSI where it just mentions ILS NAV1 when it switches to Localizer 1 and you're in range of the NAV1 radio. I don't know if that's a bug or just how it works on the nxi. Anyway, all good and thanks! Awesome tutorial as always.

    • @KipOnTheGround
      @KipOnTheGround  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, the "No data" label is part of the Bearing 1 and Bearing 2 options under the "MFD Opts" menu on the MFD. They're optional additional bearing pointers that you can turn on for NAV1, NAV2, GPS, and ADF. Let me know if you can't find them!

    • @way5718
      @way5718 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Kip on the Ground Hi Kip, yeah! I know where are the bearing 1 and 2 options but the no data label only works on G1000, not the NXi version. That's why I'm wondering if that's a bug or just the way it is on the NXi interface. Look at your tutorial 16:39 where you get your Bearing 1 tuned on NAV1, there is no longer the ILS information as it should be on the G1000 version (IMRY ILS), on the NXi it looks like the ILS information only appears at the top left next to your NAV1 frequence. I hope you know what I mean.

    • @way5718
      @way5718 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don't know what I mean, check your previous ILS approach tutorial with G1000 video at minute 13:30. You will see that the information on the HSI is different and I believe it's better on the G1000 version.

    • @KipOnTheGround
      @KipOnTheGround  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@way5718 I see what you're saying, it must be a bug :( I'll check with the NXi team on their Discord to see if it's a known issue.

    • @KipOnTheGround
      @KipOnTheGround  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OK, it's not a bug :-) Apparently that's how the real NXi works with ILS specifically. It actually can't show a bearing to the localizer (like it can with a VOR, NDB, or a GPS fix). The default/stock G1000 does this inaccurately. You'll want to open the DME window on the PFD to see the DME distances, and that can also serve as a reminder of when you're in range of the localizer. I did do this in this video, but out of habit I also had bearing 1 and 2 set for NAV1/NAV2.

  • @pearlmcp
    @pearlmcp 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow! Just wow!. I'm super excited to try this. I've been waiting for another NXI video from you this year. I do have a random question regarding RNAV on the world map. Example: After selecting the departure airport(KFMY) to arrival airport KZPH, and then selecting IFR low altitude airways with an RNAV arrival runway, the flight plan line is orange and nothing shows up on the Garmin inside the cockpit. If I select an ISL runway, all is good. Does this mean that the arrival airport does not really have RNAV in MSFS? (I did check Skyvector and pulled up the RNAV approach plate.) Thanks so much.

    Top notch! The G1000 Nxi is an amazing addition to the sim. Hope WT do the same with the G3000. Incidentally, is the G1000 Nxi fully functional in the Kodiak? I read that each update of the Nxi may require a Kodiak update to maintain functionality?

    • @KipOnTheGround
      @KipOnTheGround  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only issue I’ve seen with the Kodiak is the autopilot wavering left and right on final, so hopefully they’ll be a fix for that. Otherwise I’ve been flying the Kodiak a lot with the NXi and it’s been great overall. Thanks!

    Really good, thank you for your continued instruction. I’m doing great on VNAV but only once have I successfully got it to capture the glide slope successfully. It’s very frustrating as I do the whole flight only to fall at the final hurdle! Perhaps I’m picking ILS runways not offering full glide slope precision down to minimums? Do RNav approaches also capture glide slope? Many thanks.

    • @KipOnTheGround
      @KipOnTheGround  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Shane. Both ILS approaches and RNAV LPV approaches will give you vertical guidance, using a glideslope and glidepath, respectively. For the ILS, you'll need to switch your nav source to the Localizer (LOC1/NAV1, assuming the LOC is tuned in the NAV1 radio) using the CDI softkey on the PFD, or the NXi should auto-switch it for you as I showed in this video. That happens when your active waypoint is the Final Approach Fix (FAF). For an LPV approach you'll see the glidepath indication automatically when approaching the FAF without needing to change nav source, since it's GPS-based.
      For autopilot to capture and follow the vertical guidance, Approach Mode must be armed before intercepting the GS/GP.
      The next time you're nearing the FAF, take note of whether or not you see the green glideslope diamond (for an ILS) or the magenta glidepath diamond (for an LPV approach). If you aren't, then either the Localizer frequency isn't tuned correctly (or the nav source is not on LOC1 using the CDI button), or the RNAV approach isn't an LPV-type of approach (for more on that, see my RNAV approach video here: th-cam.com/video/C-nlNQYdx9c/w-d-xo.html ).
      If you want me to help you out while you're in the middle of a flight, you can join the Discord server here and we could chat about it if that works for you. Discord event lets you share your screen so I can see what you're seeing: discord.gg/8hcJpsvsd9

    How can you know the radio frequeny for request you IFR clearance when MSFS don't give you that information ? Thank's for this great video !

    • @KipOnTheGround
      @KipOnTheGround  ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally any relevant radio frequencies are in the top area of whichever chart you're looking at.
      You're most often going to be getting your IFR clearance while on the ground at a towered airport. If you bring up that airport's diagram, the frequencies will be shown in the top corners. Here's the airport diagram for KMRY, the destination airport in this video: skyvector.com/files/tpp/2208/pdf/00271AD.PDF
      You can see the frequencies in the top left of this diagram. Becuase there's a clearance delivery frequency (CLNC DEL 135.45), you'd use that. Otherwise, you'd use the ground frequency.
      For an approach plate like the one I used in this video, frequencies are shown in the top area known as the "briefing strip".

    Hi Kip, thanks for the video. The problem that I have is that I don't see a magenta line from my starting point (the airport) to the next waypoint. The CDI is SUSP and default LOC is active. In the top bar in magenta, only states FAF to destination runway. So when I take of I can't select NAV as there is no magenta line to follow. It looks like the first FPLN which I made from the start isn't coied to the G1000 as I don't see the departing runway nor an enroute filled in. Any clue what is going wrong here? Thanks

Will you be doing a video on the additional features/improvements on that version? If not, do you know what changes were implemented? I have not been able to find them at the Working Title website.

      I didn’t make a video on 0.11 because it was all bug fixes, so there weren’t any new feature to demonstrate. WT considers the NXi nearly feature-complete at this point, so most likely the next big things will be the new G3000 and GNS 530/430 systems! • @KipOnTheGround

      It can be hard to find on some charts, but the note that “#” corresponded to in this case was in the missed approach description and requires a specific minimum climb performance to execute that missed approach procedure. If the plane didn’t meet that requirement, the higher minimums would be used. Thanks Jake!

    I have followed the steps on this video several times but still cannot master the missed approach part. Where exactly is the missed approach point? Does this show up on the flightplan before the runway or just after it? I disengage the AP and climb to 600 feet on the runway heading and fly a good bit past the end of the runway. Then when I engage the AP again it tries to take me around the approach phase again. I presumed it would detect that I have passed the runway and take me to INTERCEPT waypoint. Any advice or tips would be much appreciated.

    Does the APPR button on the G1000 accomplish "ACTIVATE" approach ?

    • @KipOnTheGround
      @KipOnTheGround  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No! It's confusing since the word "approach" is involved in both, but Approach Mode on the autopilot is used to capture vertical guidance on an approach like an ILS or LPV approach. Activating the approach on the flight plan simply makes the first waypoint in the approach your active waypoint (just like using direct-to to that waypoint). In the case of the NXi, activating an approach will also put relevant VOR or ILS frequencies into NAV1 and NAV2 if you're flying an approach with a radio-based navigation aid.

    Quick question how are you able to get the approach plates to show up on the monitor superimposed over the flight simulator

    • @KipOnTheGround
      @KipOnTheGround  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do that as part of editing the video with Premiere Pro, but if you want charts within the sim while flying, a popular option is paying for a Navigraph Ultimate subscription. Their "in-game panel" for MSFS allows you to open a small Navigraph window within the sim from the top toolbar (see my latest "OnAir" stream replays to see it in action: th-cam.com/video/F8XMc-1gGgc/w-d-xo.html . Otherwise, you can just change from MSFS to your web browser to look up charts you already have loaded up from places like Skyvector.com. Or, if you have a phone or tablet, check out free apps like FltPln Go: flttrack.fltplan.com/FltPlanInfo/FltPlan_Go-Android-iPad_Info.html

    Is the Nav mode for GPS and Approach mode for ILS?

    • @KipOnTheGround
      @KipOnTheGround  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      On the autopilot, NAV mode will give you lateral guidance to whatever your NAV source is -- in the case in this video, it's GPS. But you can press the "CDI" softkey on the PFD to change it to NAV1 or NAV2 to use a VOR or localizer.
      Approach mode on the autopilot is for capturing and following vertical guidance on an approach that has it -- an ILS, LPV, LNAV+V, etc.

      @@KipOnTheGround Then what is the difference between VNAV and APPROACH if both capture vertical guidance?

    • @KipOnTheGround
      @KipOnTheGround  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      VNAV makes it easy to descend from your cruising altitude down to a target altitude -- usually an altitude that starts the approach phase of your flight. With the G1000, VNAV can only be used for descents, but in many airliners it's also able to be used for climbs.
      Approach mode is used to follow the vertical guidance component of an instrument approach like the glideslope of an ILS approach, or the glidepath of an LPV approach.

      Hi Terry. I'm not sure what you mean. The only way to have a monthly charge for MSFS is if you're using it via Microsoft's "Game Pass" service, which is a subscription service (think Netflix for games). If you already own MSFS outright, then you don't need to keep your Game Pass subscription unless you're also using other games in Game Pass besides MSFS.
