    Just a note from a real pilot to Simmers. You don't always need to use full flap. Flaps main function aside from slowing the plane is to increase the steepness of an approach and to lower the stall speed. So on a long runway, you'd rarely use more than one stage of flap, but on a short runway, you'd use full flap. This is Small simple and complex GA Planes I'm talking about. Commercial aircraft have their own set of rules.

      I use full flaps because I always come in hot af lol. Never fails. When I try to come in at the correct speed I stall because I'm a noob lol.

      I always use 20 degrees (don’t want a stall spin) unless I’m dealing with a crazy crosswind (Florida pilot) but yeah I always see the simulator pilots using full flaps.

    UPDATE: Since this video was posted (showing the NXi way back on version 0.1.0), the procedure for arming VNAV changed slightly. You must first change your selected altitude first, THEN press the VNV button to enable VNAV. At 13:04 in this video, I was able to do it the opposite way, but that is no longer the case. I explain this change here in the NXi 0.6.0 video: th-cam.com/video/Zh8VjCeTsm8/w-d-xo.html

    • @robertmac5352

      When you initially set up VNAV, the altitudes are shown in white on the flight plan view. In the original G1000, those white altitudes need to be switched from white to large blue font for the VNAV to use them. If the altitudes are left in white, that indicates that it is an informational only atitude. Everything else looked good.

    This is an EXCELLENT tutorial. I love the way that you explain every acronym and don't quickly make adjustments that you don't explain (many other FS TH-camrs are guilty of that). You give exactly the level of detail that I want. But even a Persian carpet must contain a fault, to signal that it does not attempt to attain perfection, which can only exist in the mind of God, and in this case the fault is that you consistently mispronounce CUTSA as CUSTA. You have a subscriber for life, or at least until I lose interest in flight simming.

    @6:23 - WAAS signal goes from WAAS geostationary satellites to G1000 GPS/WAAS antenna. it’s not necessary to place any equipment at airports to broadcast WAAS signal. KTEX Instrument Approach Procedures do not have LPV and LNAV/VNAV because they do not provide lower minima in comparison to published LP MDA category. (Probably because of the terrain around the airport). Even if you have precise vertical guidance from WAAS you still need to use LP MDA minima.

    Hi, thanx for this amazing video. it helped me a lot on how the g1000 works. I do still have a smal issue when i set my altitude in a C172 it does not use exact numbers like 1000 or 2500 ft, i think it always uses the altitude it is at at the airport and puts the ALT input on top if it. so i will have my alt set at 1092ft per example, but i want it to be 1000ft. the only way to work around this is hit the alt hold button when i cross the 1000 ft marker. . i hope this makes sense ? do you have any idea what im doing wrong?

  • @Munky332
    @Munky332 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This was good, though you kinda skipped over the main differences between LPV/LP and LNAV, which is that the lateral guidance on an LPV gets "more sensitive" as you get closer to the runway, where as LNAV does not. Whether that's important info or not, in the sim, probably doesn't matter because with the way the sim is set up with all these modern avionics, you can't really "choose" to fly LNAV, where as in older aircraft you are typically much more relegated to LNAV.
    Its a shame to see the vertical path of so many GPS approaches still broken (which is why you were super low) the PAPI should line up with the approach assuming both are the same angle (typically 3 degrees). It looks like the GPS path is intercepting the very leading end of the runway, which isn't how it is supposed to be.
    The papi was saying you were high, was because you were, you landed like 2000 feet beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown zone is the 2 fat white bars painted on the runway, parallel to where the PAPI's are (aka "the captains bars"). In a C208, not a big deal on a big runway though.

    Kip does it again! Excellent video. You are very articulate and your love of aviation is evident. One thing though... I could never get my RNAV to work. The diamond never showed up. I can't figure out how to activate the approach or do you have to activate it? It's greyed out. Also, I was using Little Navmap and/or Navigraph to make my flight plan. So it currently only works if you make the flight plan inside the world map only? Thanks.

    • @KipOnTheGround
      @KipOnTheGround  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! You can program your flight plan manually in the NXi, but it can be a little buggy right now (I've had menus get stuck open). I also couldn't request IFR clearance from ATC once I programmed the flight plan either, so because of those things I used the World Map for this video -- it seems to work consistently right now. If Little Navmap or Navigraph allow you to export the flight plan (PLN file), you can load that file into the MSFS World Map by clicking "More" at the bottom of the world map, then "Load File", and choose the PLN file to load your custom flight plan.
      Which approach are you flying specifically? Does it have vertical guidance (LPV or LNAV/VNAV?). If it's an LP or LNAV approach, it will not have vertical guidance.

    • @GumperVanLier
      @GumperVanLier 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KipOnTheGround Thanks for the response, Kip. I can't remember off hand what kind of RNAV approach I randomly picked but I will fly the same one you used in this video later today and see what happens. Yes, my imported flight plans are PLN files so that wasn't the problem. Oh, I love that VNAV. You did a nice explanation of that. I didn't know how to use it yesterday. I use in the CJ4 working class mod model and it's a lot of fun. I like finding a approach with a lot of restrictions and watch the CJ4 VNAV work. I just control the throttle like you did with the Caravan. Very fun. Thanks again.

    • @KipOnTheGround
      @KipOnTheGround  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GumperVanLier During the approach phase of the flight, you can look at the HSI on the PFD to see which type of RNAV approach is in use. To the right of the magenta "GPS" label it'll show LPV, LP, L/VNAV, LNAV, etc. LP and LNAV do not provide vertical guidance.

      General Options / Accessibility / Pilot Interaction System. There is an option to change from the new mode ("lock") to the old mode ("legacy"). So if you hate the new way, you can switch back to legacy. Under that option, there are several options for the tooltips. I turned both the "INSTANT" tooltip options to "OFF". I personally like the new way, since the click-drag interaction lets you make large changes easily. The only thing to get used to is the mechanic of holding left mouse button, then right clicking to press a button in (applies to buttons like the Heading dial or FMS knob).

VNAV seems to be working fine as I start my descent and then I start hearing these continuous beeps which I assume are for the glide slope but APR mode doesn't come on and my plane just continues to fly over the runway at 3,000 feet (the minimum in the flight plan) and never go down farther.

    Kip on the Ground: Today is 1-12-2022. After learning from your videos, I have made a couple of successful ILS flights using the G1000NXI in the Cessna 172. Runways Locator intercepted ok and also the Glideslope at the FAFs also captured successfully. Your videos have really helped. Will try flying this same course with VNAV. have not used VNAV yet. Two questions; 1. When you enable VNAV (At cruise altitude I assume.), do you also click NAV MODE on for this? 2. Do you key in the runway frequency for this RNAV approach? Apparently LOC 1 was not applicable for this RNAV GPS approrach. Thank you KIP so much. I do experience ATC wrong information at times, like landing at another airport while ATC continually gives me the takeoff airport instructions like, remain in the pattern when that is not even applicable.

    The start of the video(the nerdy stuff) is absolutely what I needed. As a non-pilot work on installing real life cockpit suite, I have a hard time understanding those LPV, LNAV, VNAV, RNAV when demonstrating the system capability.
    One question remains, since it cannot be simulated in the sim, how to determine which approach performance that you will have and on which stage of the flight that you will know it. Will the ATC tell you that it is LNAV only today ? The G500 TXi system I played around with, on the GTN 750Xi has the predict RAIM capability, which you can input your destination and estimated arrival time, and it will have some output that I have not looked into further. Might try it on my Garmin Trainer later.

    I'm trying to replicate this to practice and test RNAV. However, when I set this up and bring up the flight plan menu, I don't see any speeds in the Active VNV Profile window.
    Additionally, how do you deal with the conflict between the VNV doing its thing as soon as you hit the TOD and ATC telling you you're not at the correct altitude? For example, they still wanted me at 12,000ft even up to ROZZE. Maybe I wait for them to give me the go ahead before I click the VNV button?

    Another excellent video. I think I got the VNAV thing now. Going over the dedicated panel in the flight plan was very useful.
    Do you have video where you cover the phases of flight? What it really means when CDI says "TERM", what other possible values there are and how the Garmin has information on type of approach if you set it up (and inspect/edit it) from within the cockpit instead of the magic of having the flight plan be automatically generated.

    You made a comment on the PAPI lights for this RNAV approach. PAPI lights give inaccurate indications below a certain altitude. Rely on altitude, rate of descent and visual clues. However, this is for real life. Whether PAPI indications in the SIM are modeled in the same way is unknown.

    Funny to see you flying here in sim! Just flew RNAV 17 missed at KCON and RNAV 27 into KBVY in real life yesterday afternoon.

    Ran through this turtorial twice. Everything works as expected, but when once the glideslope is intercepted and the aircraft starts to descend the throttle stops responding appears to be stuck at 16% with speed at 65kts. With the aircraft going lower than the expected 3 degrees I had to disable the AP 3.5 NM out and hand fly it in. Fighting the engine all the way, which comes back to life within half a mile and is erratic. Anyone have the same issue? I thought the AP did not control the throttle on the Cessna 208.

    Was the minimum at 480 only to have the visual indicator on your altimeter? Or does it have some function involving disconnect of AP, missed approach, go-around flight plan?

    Sorry for sounded like such a dumbas but is RNAV the same thing as LPV, I always see these different options for different airports, but never know what the best approach is for gps guidence and which ones have approach autopilot. Also sometimes, ATC tells me to maintain a heading that is a couple degrees off my gps line, should I listen to air traffic control or continue letting autopilot navigation do its thing?

    Amazing explanation, just missing turn off the flight director, it’s a before landing check list step.

    Hi Kip. Another great video. Thanks. I just picked the game up again for the first time in months and noticed the update to the G1000. How come when I select an approach phase now that it dosnt connet to the rest of my flight plan. I like doing the flight plan from the plane rather than the main menu (if that makes any sense to you?) From a basic user😅👌

    This is very helpful for me. How can you zoom in at 26:11. Which key must I use? (I am most of the time struggling with the signs on the ground where to roll)

    14:10 When you are selecting your alt bug to 2000, while having the autopilot altitude hold active, wouldn't that automatically start your descent to 2000 ? Is the system smart enough to know that you are not descending until the TOD point hence it ignores the altitude bug changes ?

    I’ve followed these steps but the active vnv profile isn’t auto filling for me and so the vnv navigation will not activate when I click the button it just turns back off. Anyone have any ideas as to why this might be?

    How do aircraft not crash into each other while all following these same precise gps fixes? Do you normally have to wait for clearance to hit that initial approach fix or something? If so, what do you do if you have to wait?
