  • Expect to get the everyday perspective on if and how strength should be used in BJJ, how he broke his tooth and got his nickname, what weird gyms and bad coaches look like, how to deal with athletic guys on the mat and training when you're getting old, focus for white belts, his thoughts on how fast people should be promoted and much more...
Nick 'Chewy' Albin is known by the grappling community globally for his TH-cam channel ‪@Chewjitsu‬, where he provides insights and guidance to any BJJ practitioner needing support or with a question.
He started training BJJ in 2003 right after high school. He's been training constantly since then and received my black belt from Renato Tavares in 2011. Over the years he's had the chance to experience jiu-jitsu from multiple vantage points. Everything from competing and training 3 times a day to being injured and feeling miserable because he couldn't roll.
He's been teaching full time since 2010 and since then he has either won or helped his students win the Worlds, Pan Ams and other IBJJF tournaments as well as various highly acknowledged tournaments like Grapplers Quest, NAGA, EG., OGC and many others.

Chewjitsu is probably my favorite bjj channel. I've watched probably every video of his. It's helped me out a lot

As a fellow bjj player I have to say. There isn’t a better feeling in the world than going all out in the gym for a workout. It’s you against you, and it’s euphoric in between sets and the workout.. jiu jitsu is more fun but the gym isn’t mean to be fun. It’s meant to be hard work you put your heart and soul into each set and there isn’t many better natural feelings in the world

Interesting perspective. I've been going to the gym longer than I've been grappling and I would definitely get a lot more of that euphoric feeling from grappling I reckon. Kinda jealous hearing that cos for me the gym has always been pretty approximate to brushing my teeth. U just do it

I totaly agree with this, strength is way more inportant than most gym leaders etc will admit. Saying that though. I have seen weedy kids come into the gym with zero strength and they have trained there arse off a few years and then just by training bjj very consistantly they passively become very strong.

Chewy is a big inspiration for me getting into BJJ. Great job getting an interview with him. I've watched every video on his channel. Watched him for years before I signed up at my gym.

The problem isn’t the strength, it’s people winning and getting promoted because of their strength. Being strong doesn’t mean you are good it just means you are strong.

My brother who's a scientist told me one day:"researchers are usually the worst at the field they're studying. They study a given field because of their obsession with that one thing they can't get a grasp on.".
I'm a black who seriously lacked discipline in many aspects of my life.
However, it is because i specifically lacked discipline, that i deeply know the value of it, and how it could have impacted and improved my life.
That's why as a teacher, i'm trying to pass on this value to my students, specially the kids.
I don't want them to lose the time i loss and miss the opportunity i missed for not being disciplined.

I can tell when someone has to use all their strength to stop it. When my coach has to do it as a brown belt me a brand new blue and hit a move and he has to use all the strength and out weighs me by 80 pounds I makes me happy.

I don't know, Ive heard Countless black belts, some who are among the highest level, most respected guys in the history of jiu jitsu say that if you're having to use mjscle to power through techniques that you're doing it wrong, and that you therefore need tonfix your technique.
I am strong af and can over power many/most of the guys I train with, but I feel that if I get a submission or dominant position through over powering them that my technique must suck and that I need to improve it.
Not that strength isnt great to have! But I think if you rely on it, you need to fix your technique. Ive heard almost too many High level black belts to even count say that very thing. If I rely on strength vs technique then the next guy who is stronger will smash me and I'll have no answer.

Conversely, if you are sharp technically but weak physically then the next person who is also weak physically but sharper technically will beat you.😅

My thoughts are BS gyms have the "You cant ask black belts to roll" so they can cherry pick rolls with people they know they can beat

Doesn't require much skill or discipline. Show up for ten years twice a week and most gyms will grade you just to keep you as a subscriber.

Not sure if the title is click bait or not as I’m clicked. It’s funny how when I first started (2012) till right before I got my brown (2023), there wasn’t any shit talking towards black belts and down playing the significance of earning one. Now it seems it’s the new trendy thing. I’m a one stripe brown. I see John Damher and other black belts, blue belts who suck, white belts that don’t know anything all dogging on the black belt accomplishment. John Dahmer or dahner (how ever tf you spell it), “getting a black belt isn’t anything special. I know tons of black belts and the vast majority suck. It does not take much to become a black belt. Just pay your gym fees and show up”.
I’m sorry this is utter fucking B.S. the amount of time i have wanted to quit due to frustration, burnout, being a smaller competitor, the 40 min to an hour+ drive I do just to get to practice after working all day, the injuries, the joint issues, those days when I don’t want to go yet still do, the dates and relationships I have missed out on, my diet and work out regimen and lifestyle that encompasses my training, the time(over a decade for me) just by itself. 2-3 hours practicing AFTER working more than full time with all other household chores and errands. Thats not including strength and conditioning or meal prep or the amount of laundry. Training 5+ times a week. Researching vids cause you teach 2 classes. One being a 5:30 a.m class on Monday that I have to be up at 3:50 A.M for.
Don’t get me wrong, you can be a black belt and suck. But I’m tired of all that shit this gen of brown belts and newer black belts have done to reach the coveted black belt are down played. Yes the belt isn’t the focus, but that doesn’t mean getting one isn’t a goal for most people. Right now I love training but still get frustrated and burnt out. There is still an infinite amount of knowledge to learn after getting a black belt. However that doesn’t change a damn thing with the meaning behind it if you earned it by a legit school and legit instructor. Took me 4.5 years to get my blue. I started when I was 20. Most people QUIT IN THAT TIME!! 99.999% of people quit before reaching their black belt. It takes discipline to stay focused on one goal (even if it’s one with a hobby that you love) for that long. Why do we not discredit a masters degree or even a bachelors degree? All you have to do is buy a book, read and that’s it right? Not like them books are fight back and you’re getting smashed. No, getting a degree is an accomplishment. I have a health bachelors degree. At one point I was going to school more than full time, working full time, had a side gig on the weekends, preparing for boards, and still training for competitions. I’m sorry, but “fxck you” to whomever says getting a black belt in bjj is not that big of a deal.
Again haven’t watched the vid, but it’s just something I have noticed that’s been trendy. If it wasn’t a big deal and wasn’t challenging 99% of people wouldn’t quit
