In game armies are what, 20 to 30 guys at most and coming in waves at the Civil War quests? Lore Dragon Born shakes continents with a single word spoken and topples kingdom walls with ease. He could take on hundres of ARMIES not just soldiers. Able to speak his will directly into the song of creation. I know that as a game aspect you can't do it up that much as A. It's be over powered and make the whole object of playing the game worthless and B. just hard to make that power fathomable into the game
But yea, Game Dragon Born will never be shit compared to Lore Dragon Born.

My reasoning is firstly the Greybeards and secondly, if a draugr deathlord can be undead and shout at me every five seconds then I, a natural born and still living Dovahkiin, should be able to utter a shout as often as Gordon Ramsay swears.

The shout cooldown is literally only there for gameplay. In lore, even just him speaking normally should be enough to cause headaches and discomfort. The first Emperor, another dragonborn, could literally shout at a dude and atomize him. It's even better that the one you play in Skyrim is actually an aspect of the god Shor, which is why he's not sitting in his throne in Sovngarde. You're literally just a mortal aspect of him going on an adventure.

Honestly I wish there was a shout skill tree where you could upgrade their effects or reduce the cooldown at the cost of dragon souls. Maybe even chain shouts together or combine them to work like in this video. As it stands some shouts are useless in the endgame because their damage doesn't scale with enemy levels and dragon souls are useless once you've unlocked every shout.

I have both mods together, and plan on a shout-focused build soon

    • @fireblast133

Stormcrown's one that works that way, kinda. it works like the werewolf/vampire trees where it's a separate condition. Absorbing a dragon soul gets you progress. chance in combat to have no cooldown, increase the duration and power of shout effects, reduce overall cooldown time by 50%, if you fall below a certain health level once an hour you gain ten seconds of no cooldown, etc.
A few shouts are reworked, like disarm becomes subdue, which will nerf the target's weapon damage instead of knock the weapon out of hand, and newly added ones like poison breath and lightning breath.
Later when you can meditate on words of power with partysnax, you don't get a single shout buffed, instead, most shouts essentially get a perma buff at the cost of one additional dragon soul. Like Dragon Aspect causes no shout cooldown, Unrelenting Force deals more damage and ignores wards, Dragonrend reduces the dragon's armor value and magic resistance, poison breath has it's damage over time start to do double damage once the target hits half health, drain vitality doubles the drain effect.

Imho, in game Dragonborn can be even more terrifying . If you've got the slow time shout maxed time gets sped up on you so much you're almost as fast as arrows. Combined with a talos blessing and amulet and some alteration perk to extend their duration, and some alteration potions, you can reduce the cooldown enough to cast that shout continuously.
Now imagine the significance of that - that'd be a guy just running around the battlefield at something like 200 km/h. To him everyone else just seems to be almost standing still. He could just hack down armies faster than anyone could react.

Greybeards, who trained for their lifespan, only mastering a few shouts, had problems with speaking. Their whisper, could kill everyone pretty easily. Arngeir was the only one who could speak.
Dragonborn is like, an archmage reached the pinnacle of magic.
If he knows the shout, he can use it freely, limitlessly, and any way he wants. There are mages who could destroy lands. Imagine all those power, inside a single person, and this person can also train to do whatever he wants. A warrior? A mage? A commander? You name it.

He has sort of Anti-CHIM, not CHIM. He wants to usurp the Godhead because he believes the dream, and, in consequence, everything, is part of him, instead of him being part of the dream. It is why the blight changed people and environments, because they were corrupted in the vision of Dagoth Ur, who created a nightmare in the dream in the image of its "dreamer" master. Still, the Nerevarine also won because he was who he was and because he had the artifacts he did. He is indeed immortal, as per prophecy, but his own power is still very much mortal, apart from his enormous favour with Azura. The tools of Kagrenac defeated Dagoth Ur. The Nerevarine was just the intelligent and apt vessel for them to be used. Without the tools, the Heart cannot be touched.

That does line up somewhat with Tiber Septim's story. Or at least one of his stories. When Cuhlecain (who Septim served as general) was assassinated, Septim's throat was supposedly slit. An act that was attributed to Reachmen. Apparently causing enough damage where he could barely speak let alone Shout after the attack. One of Septim's titles/names was of course, Ysmir, Dragon of the North.
This also lines up with how old stories are half remembered & half imagined which after enough different transmissions of the story (whatever story it is) become muddied and confused, lost or partly forgotten. Only to surface again, in a different area, as part of another story which has then become a myth, a folktale or outright religious dogma. Take the epic of Gilgamesh and the crazy stuff he gets up to and how tons of it pop up all over the middle east and Europe, some even today as part of the Catholic take on Christianity. It is hard to believe that the writers at Bethesda didn't use this common occurrence as part of how they went about creating the mythos of TES. The only real question is "To what extent?"
addendum: Professor Mick Aston's first law of local research is that the local research is invariably wrong. His second law is that it is always right. It is the job of the archaeologist, the archivist, the historian to figure out what is garbage and what is an actual truth that has been passed down. He stated this clearly in the Time Team S19E2 Bitterly. (Aston was a very real archaeologist from the UK, who Brits would certainly remember from Time Team. Though he is now deceased.) Those rules describe local folk knowledge, but applies at some level, to all knowledge that is passed via some form of transmission from one source to another, from one person to another, whatever, i.e. everything. So anything attributed to Vivec or even known explicitly to be said by him being a mix of complete BS and actual truths, is perfectly in line with how the world actually works irl.

@Mason Walker Can a thuum user get laryngitis? Tiber Septim is said to have lost the ability to shout after his throat was literally slit and he was left for dead. So MASSIVE trauma to the part of his body that produces the sounds used in the magic of the thuum. Whereas what happens when you get laryngitis, your voice box is still basically intact, it just cannot function as well due to inflammation. (which is what happens if you yell a lot. It is akin to your leg getting sore from running, the leg is still perfectly fine, it just needs some rest)
That said, your words gave me an idea. 'Grabbing the roars by the hand' sounds like grappling and avoiding his enemies attacks over and over, think judo. The part about the bleeding throat reminds me of what happens when you have a persistent strong cough. You will literally start to cough up blood after a little while. So instead of as you said 'losing his voice' and I described above, perhaps it is referring to using the thuum so much in such a short time, in such a fight, that he literally caused internal trauma to himself. In the end, perhaps still being able to Shout, but coughing up blood at the same time, or perhaps having some spray of blood come out during Shouts.
Something like that would account for the actual points in that lesson. Fighting hand to hand, making the fight last a long time, physical damage to a part of the body which is fundamental to producing the thuum.
addendum: As far as I can tell, the tonal magic of the Dwemer and the magic of the thuum actually use sounds in order to effect their magics, unlike other franchises where something only gives the appearance of using sound, for instance due to the magic seemingly coming from the mouth or throat like I have seen with several forms of dragon fire over the years.
edit: Only using Septim as an example of a known instance where one of the users of the thuum is said to have actually lost the ability due to damaga. Ysmir, Dragon of the North, can certainly be describing a bunch of other people.

It is complete BS that so many games come out in a state where fans, working as amateurs in the best sense of the word (i.e. people who do something because they love it, not for payment or whatnot) have to fix uncountable bugs and other simple issues that should have been done by the professional devs who are actually being paid to do the job (e.g. misplaced world elements that were hand placed by devs and not procedurally generated, such as the bazillion rocks that were cured of their anti-gravity in the unofficial patch. Or were only procedurally generated as a first step and were meant to be tweaked/changed by hand (look at the horrid facial movement in Mass Effect Andromeda... then, just to hammer the point home, go look at the early video of not-Wrex's mission and how GOOD they were there).
Ok, Skyrim is awesome. My playtime is somewhere in the lower 5 digits (I ended up putting over 400 hours on completely unmodded oldrim over the last month or two, in what started as a performance test on my Steam Deck... a performance test that was supposed to last 2-3 hours at most.. ffs) But so many systems are 1/3 complete or only work half the time or are cut but are still included in the game as pure bloat (they could just as easily been cut from the game and still released as part of the creation kit if they really wanted to). AND THIS IS A GAME THAT IS AWESOME... look at the stuff which is nowhere near as good of a product.
Oh, one other problem. There is a snowballs chance in hell of modding the game that much and then just stop modding the game, in order to play out the rest of your days in peace. Modding Skyrim is more addictive than crack combined with the availability of cheap chinese knockoff goods offered for the low low price of nothing + your soul.
btw: true fun was installing over 700 active mods on oldrim (plus god knows how many other replacers and skse stuff and so on). Sure there was the limit of 255 active esp mods... but that is where merging mods comes into the picture. All the automation you get like checking for updates via NMM go bye bye, since the merged mods become a custom mod of your own creation and it is up to you, to know what is in what merged set, what can and cant be merged, recreating the merged file everytime you want to update anything in it, or even if you want to change the color of something that would have given a quick setup had it all been done as a single mod through NMM. Then to top it off no BOSS or anything, again its all on you. Ahh fun times, the days when modding Skyrim was a game in and of itself.

Modding is awesome, but let's not pretend it isn't a well loved game despite that. It was groundbreaking for its time, and you can only expect so much from a dev team on a time limit. OBVIOUSLY when you have an army of modders that could fill a small country, they could all focus on individual aspects of the game that can be improved upon. Dev teams aren't so lucky. Let's not forget that it was the game that made modding popular, not the other way around.

I always had a personal head cannon that after my character helped the Stormcloacks win the civil war the Aldmeri basically tell the empire “You guys failed, let us handle this upstart for you!”. To which my character, his companions and the entire leadership of Skyrim boil down the defenses to four places: High Hrothgar for the leadership, Markarth for civilian protection in a Dwemer city, Dawnguard keep for my character and his companions and Blackreach for the military. Using the mapped and cleared out Dwemer Ruins to launch Gurrilla raids on the Aldmeri, and Dawnguard keeps natural choke point to hold the more focused attacks. The civilians would be safe within the old Dwemer Ruins and have the mages guild erect barriers to shield from Magic. High Hrothgar is already treacherous on the climb and telling Parthy and his buddies to do daily sweeps on the mountain side to keep it cleared would be enough. The invasion would basically end with my character and all his companions leading a charge on Aldmeri command and slaying everyone there and sending the severed heads back and a warning.

Assuming the last Dragonborn is the strongest (except Talos) he would be able to tear mountains apart with his full power.
He could split the fucking ground on a continental basis. It's safe to say that even an army of 100,000 would be as easy to defeat as the bandits in this video, even if they don't rout after 5 seconds and fight to the death.

Shouting should've had its own "breath" resource bar, akin to stamina or magicka. Rather than implementing cooldowns on shouting, have it deplete the dragonborn's breath proportional to the cooldown a shout would normally have. The strength of your shouts would correlate to how much breath you had when you used it, and rather than a cooldown you'd have to consciously manage your shouting frequency to avoid your shouts becoming ineffective from rapid overuse.

The wizard dude we meet in dragonborn dlc also calls us the second most powerful dragonborn to exist, with likely only tiber septim being above the last dragonborn, at least as he was then.
Tiber septim took decades to get to his power, the last dragonborn, if we're being extra generous to how long this takes, took max 5 years to become the second strongest dragonborn.
Add on to that the dragonborn's extended lifespan, and any magic shenanigans that might occur, it's very feasible that later in the series we hear of the last dragonborn surpassing even tiber septim.
