    But in all seriousness, this art piece encapsulate what every soldier and civilians alike that has experienced war/combat sheds light to the egregiously horrid trait that humans have in nature: the will to kill for self preservation, even if it has to be done in the most morbid manner.

      Every animal will kill for self preservation. We’re different from most because we will kill just to kill. Like Cats will kill for fun. War isn’t killing because you want to however you have to. Survival is part of it but so is duty, fear, and the will to protect the man or woman who is fighting next to you. It’s more complicated than “human bad because we kill things”.

    Seeing such a powerful painting being turned into a meme is like when your favourite song ends up in a TikTok trend. Personally I don't mind it but I can see some people getting absolutely livid at this.

    One of the best uses of this painting is the remake that has the uses the Lorax. Especially because his mustache makes him look like a WWI British Officer.
    But the actual painting just gets more unnerving the longer you stare at it and the more historical knowledge you have of World War Two, particularly in the Pacific. The Japanese held onto some of these islands for months at a time, often turning these battles into wars of attrition. Even Japan's "last stand," The Battle of Okinawa, when they were supposed to be on the verge of surrender and starvation, still turned out to be the bloodiest battle in the Pacific. One can only imagine the sounds, sights, smells, etc. that were behind this painting, and then there is this man; so used to it all, that he no longer has any emotional reaction to it at all - he's just there, going through the motions.

      @@niceman2665 sort of, PTSD is a sort of umbrella condition that can encompass a wide range of reactions to a wide range of stressors and traumatic events, including those not relating to combat. Shell shock, can’t remember it’s modern term, is a subset of that umbrella that deals specifically with the effects of being in an environment with a lot of explosions going off around you and near you, with the caveat that those explosions could have potentially lead to your death. It’s also theorised that the constant exposure to moments of high pressure from the exposure helped to worsen the psychological effects via a form of brain damage though I’m uncertain of its truthfulness. But nevertheless shell shock refers specifically to the type of PTSD that can come from combat, and is typically preceded by combat fatigue, a precursor condition that, although not as severe as ptsd initially and can be a temporary condition, can develop into its more permanent form of ptsd and shell shock if treatment isn’t administered.

    When I saw the title of the video was called 1000 Yard Stare, I immediately thought of the 1000 Yard Stare from Call Of Duty World At War from one of the mission's intro where I was laughing more than I should at single frame of a soldier staring fairly distant with a caption that says 1000 Yard Stare because I thought it make a pretty good meme and felt like it had a meme potential, thus I wish it was an actual meme. Now I'm here in one of Lessons in Meme Culture's video watching a meme review of The 1000 Yard Stare. It felt like I just fulfilled a prophecy. For some reason, I'm just so happy that the 1000 Yard Stare became an actual meme after laughing at it as a frame from Cod WaW and not believing it would actually be recognized as a meme.

    Its a great reaction gif and itself is a fantastic art piece by Thomas Lea whose a great artist.
    With the 2022 adaptation of All Quiet On The Western Front blowing up and the memes it works well. Stalingrad 1993 would also be a fantastic war film though which was also made by Germans.
    *I would love to discover who the marine was that Thomas Lea painted here though especially if a professional team investigated and made a documentary to find out who it was.* But great video again LIMC

    So... When discussing the artist Tom Lea III it's pretty important you mention the last part because his father Tom Lea Jr. was a member of the KKK and mayor of El Paso, TX from the years of 1915-1917 which is a brief tenure, but also important because he laid the groundwork for a monument to the cities legacy of racial oppresion in the form of the Juan De Onate statue that sits in front of their airport. Thomas C Lea III, on the other hand saw firsthand what the cost of war was on the everyman and strived to display that in his art. He has a muesuem dedicated to him in El Paso, but the Calumet Park Feildhouse in Chicago has a few of his public murals commisioned through the new deal.
    Remember Tom Lea II, horrible racist. Tom Lea III, treasure of the southwest

    The painting is actually of a Marine that Tom Lea had witnessed during the battle of Peleliu, who he said was "staring stiffly at nothing." During the battle of Peleliu, the Marines had fought on jagged, steep and barren coral ridges collectively named Bloodynose ridge, which can be seen in the painting's background. The Japanese fought from these ridges from caves and interconnected tunnels where they'd fire maghine guns, mortars, rockets and artillery down on to US Marines and Soldiers below. At some point, the Marines suffered 400+ casualties daily and were advancing only in feet and yards. The ridges were practically a vegetationless, confused moonscape of peaks, cliffs, ridge walls and sinkholes. The air was thick with coral dust, heavy smoke, huge swarms of flies and the ground covered in thousands of bodies. The Japanese did not surrender and only left their caves at night to slit the throats of sleeping Marines and Soldiers. By the end of the battle some 8,000+ Marines and Soldiers had become casualties in these ridges and 10,600+ Japanese had been killed there, and 33 Japanese survivors did not surrender until the spring of 1947. Needless to say, just a dew days in that environment drove US survivors to have a 2,000 yard stare.

    • @anonymousadam8950
      @anonymousadam8950 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wonder how they convinced those 33 to give up

    • @liltoaster7308
      @liltoaster7308 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@anonymousadam8950 If I remember correctly, those 33 Japanese had been persisting on food that they stole and ate from discarded US rations and it wasn't until one of them picked up a discarded American newspaper that they learned that the war had ended. The US Marines and Soldiers there knew that there were likely still some Japanese soldiers still in the mountains, and often tried getting the Japanese to leave by speaking out surrender messages by bullhorn, but it only really worked on Koreans and Paluan natives who'd been pressed into Japanese military service. At some point in the spring of 1947 though, the 33 Japanese holdouts attacked an American patrol with grenades and rifle fire, but somehow tensions calmed down enough so that the Japanese would surrender. A formal surrender ceremony was held and the commanding officer turned over his sword in what some historians refer to as "the last formal surrender of WW2."
