In this video, I will be covering settings every Synology NAS should have in 2024. Most of these will be using DSM 7.2, so I recommend that you update to take advantage of these features. I will be discussing my recommendations for security settings, data protection settings, and a few notes on general settings to help with NAS use-ability.

You are a real treasure to Synology owners! I appreciate you so much and if I need a consultant I’ll definitely hire you.
Yep. This. Thank you so much!
100% agree with this.
Thank you. I had most of these already done, but a few were new or needed adjustments. Love that you move so quickly rather that talk for no reason. I can pause the video, make a change and restart the video without wasting time.
Same here. I was just looking to write the same comment.
I would just say be careful to annunciate clearly as best as you can. Sometimes when people speak too quickly, it can sound like they’re mumbling and/or it’s hard to catch what they just said!
Anyway, thanks Will. I enjoy your videos!
@@stco2426 Ditto!
For the backup, I like to use hyperbackup which automatically unmounts the usb drive I backup to after the scheduled event, but I also have a user task set up to automatically remount the drive right before the next scheduled back up. In the task I use the following script:
echo "2-2" > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/usb/unbind
sleep 10
echo "2-2" > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/usb/bind
This will remount the drive, and then I have then next task to copy the backup to that drive. Hyperbackup then unmounts the drive. Nice little feature to keep a backup off the network except during the backup event.
Neat trick
Loved the video. I occasionally use SSH to my Synology, keeping it off by default and only turning it on as needed. Once I'm finished, I make sure to turn it off.
However, in case I forget (it happens to the best of us), I've set up a daily task that automatically shuts it down using a custom script. This script uses the straightforward commands `systemctl disable sshd` and `systemctl stop sshd`. This ensures my SSH connection is always securely closed at the end of the day.
Right on, I had about 90% of the setting applied but always did learn a few from you. Thank you as always!
Thanks as always Will. These videos offer a great checklist for periodic review of stuff that we may have set long ago and is always worth the few minutes it takes us.
Fantastic videos. Please keep them coming. I have 16 users on my system and couldn't have done it without you.
Excellent video for new Synology NAS users! It was one tutorial I requested a year or so ago. Great recommendations to get you started!
was a good opportunity to double check all my settings, thank you for this very clear and structured video 👍
Thanks so much. I recently had to reconnect to the NAS because of some password confusion (I had inadvertently put a space before the password) and lost most of my customizations [that you had helped with from day one]. I am pretty much where I was now.
Going through all of this and the depth that I see available, I am amazed at just how much you need to know to use this one little NAS to its utmost. I know of an ex-CIO/CTO (friend's husband) for Northwestern University Health system. To think that this would have been a very small part of his bailiwick leaves me awestruck. How does someone like that even sleep at night?
You too have my respect and admiration. Congrats on your accomplishments, Rex.
Excellent video. I found several tips that are helpful that I was unaware of (or simply forgot). Thanks for putting this info out for us!
Thank you so much! Just bought my 923+ and I am watching through the whole video to ensure I have every protection enabled.
Hi Will, Awesome video. You provide excellent information. Been watching you for years now.
Great video! I was able to tweak some settings a bit but based on these recommendations. I also will plan on getting an external hard drive to setup a backup! Appreciate the great content.
Thanks for the informative video!
SpaceRex @12:00 mark or so talking about bit rot and solar flares ("I'm not even kidding you") was a viral meme moment, appreciated.
Great video. Really put my mind at ease. Thank you very much.
Great video. Thank you for all your help!
Hi Will, just want to say thank you for your videos!!! I´m just a home user and your videos have helped me a lot!
Set up my first Synology NAS about one month ago. Even with taking my time and following your set up videos I missed a few settings that this video helped me to correct. These user videos for us beginners are REALLY useful. I don’t need to understand all the terminology, I just want the NAS set up correctly and working. This video was a huge help to update my settings especially in the Snaphot area. I only had 2 folders set up snapshot….
I just got a 1522+, and I'm excited to start building it out using your videos! Thank you so much!
Its tons of fun, and really easy to use! So much you can do with it.
I needed this quality of life video. Thank you
Man you are the G since I got my 1522+ :). Thanks for all the help:)
Love your videos. I think I have my ds920+ setup the best way possible for my home business and personal use based on all your videos. If I need a problem solved you’ll be #1 on my list to call!!
Thanks for the refresher
wasn't aware of the email through synology option; thanks for the protip.
Thank you. This is useful!
Awesome, Thank You!
I really appreciate this. While I like to beleive I'm pretty diligent in administering my NAS, this video fills in any potential gaps. Very, very helpful.
Easy subscription. Going to upgrade my dad's synology to a plus model.
Thanks for reminding me about 7.2. For some reason my 916+ showed 7.1 as the latest version and wouldn't auto update. I've downloaded and installed manually and that went well.
Hi Will. Great video as always. I watched it twice. The first was to see what is happening and the second was to follow along with my DS1821+ and very frequent stopping of the video to make the changes you suggested. Could you possibly post a video on how to clean a Synology NAS? Like where to vacuum. I cleaned mine once thoroughly and then every few months a small touch up of the vents. Thanks and please keep making these awesome videos!
Great video !!!
Thank you for taking the time to share this information! Question, I saw an option to enable Immutable snapshots, seems like this would be another level of data protection against ransomware. Would you also recommend enabling this option on my snapshots?
Thank you!!!!! ♥
Thanks!
Thanks for the video. I watch your channel a lot. I have a question about snapshots. At 08:30-08:56 you say that snapshots should be set up for the ActiveBackupforBusiness shared folder, albeit only once a week. What is the use case for that? When would you want to recover this particular shared folder using an old snapshot? I suppose it could be useful if I wasn't backing up this shared folder. Since I do backup this shared folder to an offsite Synology NAS with Hyper Backup, I can't see a scenario when I would recover it with snapshots.
thanks ... great video ...
Thansk for all the tips and explanations. I dont know if this is the place to ask but I am planning to increase my storage. I have 4x3TB in a Synology DS923+. I want to add 2x8TB to replace two of the drives. Can I do both at once or one at a time? Have you done a video?
@SpaceRexWill ... because so much of your content covers usage of Synology NAS devices at the home- and small-business-user levels, it would be handy if you also spent a short stint of videos to cover Synology routers in depth, given that Synology brand fidelity is pretty high among users. I, for one, have found SO MUCH help in your NAS content but I also bought a Synology router and there is such a paucity of useful content (beyond the basics of setting it up) on TH-cam and elsewhere for the routers and their OS (SRM).
Thanks
Thanks for the quick check up video. i do hyperbackup on USB HDD by schedule, what is the best 2nd backup solution , I have another USB HDD and not willing to buy anther NAS for this time. thanks
Question about smart tests -
As a home user, my synology is mostly for media and recording tv. I’ve got quick tests set up once a week and extended once a month. This video makes me think again, as it’s different to the advice you used to give. Is that a reasonable setting for my use?
Helpful
Awesome awesome video
I wish you would cover UGreen's NAS that is launching... XD But yea... luvin' how stable DSM 7.2 is.. I updated both my NAS to 7.2 a few weeks ago and it has been solid. 👍
Solar flares? Would it be good practice to run a scrub after a significant solar event like Mar 24th? I'm sure the satellites all run system checks. Or maybe just needs checking with a major event. Thanks for the video!
Haha so it's normally a very unlikely event, so I probably would not worry about it too much.
The probabilities that two bits in the same section of file are hit as insanely small
So no firewall anymore? I was searching that - saw a 3yr old video - but before I set it up. I watched this. Is setting up a VPN thing still something I should do?
Do you only do Synology or will you ever review Ugreen?
I have a Synology DS920+ with a 16 TB Ironwolf PRO hard drive in a RAID 1. I have now bought another Synology DS923+ and enough 16 TB ironwolf to fill both NAS. I was thinking of using one Synology as backup in another house. Which RAID configuration should I use when I have two Synology NAS. (and is it difficult to change RAID settings)
I have set up exactly this scenario with a DS1520+ and a DS920+ in two different locations. The choice of backup method (Hyper Backup) and the choice of RAID level are independent of each other. A RAID level with redundancy (RAID 1, 5, 6, 10, or SHR with 1 or 2 disk redundancy) will save you from having to restore files in some scenarios, such as data corruption due to improper system shutdown. Backups will protect you from other scenarios, such as accidentally deleting files. And no NAS should be without a UPS.
@@ronbandes5630 which RAID configuration did you choose to go for. I haven’t set my system up yet, because I still don’t know which RAID I should choose. I need to do some more research on this.
Installed today new DS1522+ and DSM 7. With just 1h running and by default SMB1 as disabled already i saw at least 5 attempts to connect to my NAS using SMB1. All got blocked successfully.
I have a huge request from you, Sony released network streaming update on their new cameras and I would like to setup SRT Server in my Synology DS920+, would you look into it and make a video on how to use the docker to set it up? it will be huge!!!!
Hey! I followed this video and made most of the changes however I noticed that my RAM usage is holding around 29%-33% constantly and doesn't really go down. Is that's okay?
How to work with back up task? I set it up to back up everything once a week to a connected USB 3.5HDD connected to the nas. And sometimes it does back up, but sometimes it says that back up destination is offline. What's the reason for this? As I am fed up disconnecting and then connecting external usb to the nas to make it work.
I have found that USB drives can be flaky on my DS1520+, particularly if there is a USB hub involved. Synology does not suppport USB hubs, but I finally got a really good one (Kingston FCR-HS4) working.
Hello from France here. Your content is awesome. Pure knowledge. What I love is the rhythm of your videos: no bullshit, no blabla, just useful content!
For my DS2419+ I am currently using DSM 6.2.4-25556 Update 7. In my control panel, DSM update tab, my next update shows DSM 7.0.1. Can I just skip that update version and do a manual update straight from v6.2.4-25556 Update 7 to v7.2.1-69057 Update 4?
TH-camr Wundertech says you need at least 3 disks in SHR, RAID 5 or 6 for datascrubbing to work, even though you can enable it with 2 disks. If you don't have at least 3 disks DSM wouldn't be able to repair a file from parity. I have a 2-bay NAS. Apparently It's no use to actually enable datascrubbing.
Snapshot was really a very very bad thing for me. I was getting crazy today to find what was killing my Nas....it wasn't showing anything in ressources or else but my Nas was almost inaccessible...took me almost an hour to reach the installed app and to uninstall snapshot. After that everything came back to normal
Hi , can someone help me .
I have a question about making nas from gaming pc components. I have my old ryzen 5 2600 and mitherboard b450 and ram ddr4 3000mhz,cooler master 600w silver . Can i use them to make nas server with 6-8 hdd bays -slots and install dsm in that way , also i have question about usb that must be in the nas like a boot . We cant move boot inside nas?, like we install windows on ssd-nvme , because whole system are depending on USB life .
Thanks
where do you stand on the whole synology or truenas debate?
I'm a fan of synology because its easy as $hit to use. Really the user experience is key for me.
Would I need to data scrub a Synology that is for Surveillance station?
You would not.
Data does not live long enough to need it.
I have a DS218+ and only updated to 7.1.1-42962. It says it's up to date. Why isn't it getting 7.2?
Your particular model may not need them. Do a google search on "Synology DSM release notes" The latest DSM update is at the top. Start there and work your way down. Just a thought.
I don't get it: security settings without firewall enabled? That's the first thing, I would recommend.
I explain it all here: th-cam.com/video/eCTjLTJcogQ/w-d-xo.html
Your router is your firewall. You are not taking your NAS to a coffee shop, so you should trust local connections.
Furthermore 90% of the time I see someone with the firewall checked as enabled, they dont have a single block rule, which means all traffic is allowed through the firewall. So there is literally no difference between having the firewall on and off if you dont have a block rule.
Snap shots took up 5TB of space. I got rid of them
Why would you tell people to turn off the firewall?
Probably because your network router already has a firewall.
He did a video on why you probably don't need a firewall. th-cam.com/video/eCTjLTJcogQ/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygURc3BhY2VyZXggZmlyZXdhbGw%3D
I saw it. "probably" don't need it vs "turn off" are very different. I would have preferred an explanation or a reference to the video so numbs can see and choose for themselves. :) @@DavidM2002
How about a 10G card, or 3rd party NVME disks like what QNap offers?
@@wojtek-33 Yes, I am aware of that. I am hoping new models come with built-in 1g and accept Samsung NVME as disk volumes.
Great updated best practices Rex, did you delete my post and remark about the "deleteme"confusion. Since when do you delete a valid question?
SONOS has finally moved away from SMBv1 so that issue is now removed.
Not with the V1 controllers unfortunately
P r o m o s m 🤤
you have great videos but
PLEASE, PLEASE STOP SHAKE WITH YOUR HANDS, !
After updated Im getting these notifications: The IP address [122.223.113.10] experienced 10 failed attempts when attempting to log in to SMB running on NAS-CNG within 5 minutes, and was blocked at 04/02/2024 11:17.
You have setup SMB to be publicly exposed to the internet.
You need to turn this off ASAP. You should look at your port forwarding rules
Do you have a video how turn off @@SpaceRexWill ? or Further detail, Thanks for your quick replay.
