Both the iMac and MacBook Pro now have Apple's amazing M1 chip, which might lead people to think that they would be better off buying a MacBook Pro to get the same power as an iMac but in a portable form factor, however, that's not necessarily the case, and there are a lot of reasons why I think you should buy an M1 iMac over the M1 MacBook Pro.

This is completely spot on! Recently got the M1 iMac and definitely giving up my MacBook Pro after realising I only needed the portability a few times a year - there are even more pluses such as the ergonomics of working on the iMac vs a laptop and this new iMac is lighter and thinner so easier to move around from room to room aswell.

Thank you! I’ve never understood people who prefer a laptop only to have it connected to an external monitor and never use it as a laptop is supposed to be used. Then why not buy a desktop instead? It’s the most logical thing to me.

I’m with you on this. I gave up my M1 MBP for the iMac. Given that I’ve got a 12.9” iPad Pro, that suffices where portability is needed.

Thank you for making this video. It let me know I had not slept through an entire revolution. I’ve watched so many reviewers question “who is this for?” because homes were all mobile now. Desktops were “niche” products. When did this happen? I don’t buy laptops. Sometimes I use one for work, but I always end up working on it from a desk or table, never comfortable on the bed on couch, squinting at a small screen. Remote access for work with my desktop is the most comfortable.

How many people have a laptop but they always use it in the same place at home all the time? Makes no sense especially because hardly anyone works in offices anymore, everyone is a remote worker now. You would be better getting a bigger screen and your eyes will thank you in the future. The 23.5" iMac is a perfect screen size in my view. 13, 14, and 16" is too small. 30" would be too big for a desk.

Thanks so much for this breakdown - I've been flirting with the idea of selling my 13" M1 MacBook Pro ever since pre-ordering the purple iMac (still waiting for it to arrive). I'd been holding off on a new laptop for years, so I sprung on the M1 model last fall as soon as it launched, and it's been awesome. But I only picked up the base model at the time, knowing Apple would redesign all their machines soon enough. But when I ordered the new iMac, I sprung for the memory and storage because THIS seems like what I was really waiting for. And you're totally right - I already have an iPad Pro for couch surfing and general use while mobile around town. I take it with me almost everywhere, but my laptop stays docked at my desk 99% of the time.
Another perspective to consider is that I'm one of many former office workers displaced due to COVID-19, with standard-issue corporate laptops. I rarely need to use anything Windows-specific for my job, so ever since our office went fully remote, I mainly use my personal Mac because I'm more comfortable with it, which typically makes me more productive. So for those very rare occasions when I might need to travel for work, I don't *need* a personal laptop because I already have a work laptop. Which is one reason I think Apple is going to sell a truckload of these new iMacs to the work-from-home crowd.

I've primarily been a desktop mac user (mac pro) for over a decade. I much prefer the desktop over the macbook but there has been occasions (maybe like 3-4 times a year) where I would need a portable device that my ipad pro can't do as well or as fast due to software and just plain muscle memory. Once the M1X macbook pros come out I'll be swapping to that portable desktop hybrid life even though the main usage will be desktop. Thanks Greg for the insights!

Thanks so much for this video Greg, it really helped me in making up my mind. I recently bought the M1 iMac but was considering returning it because I thought I’d hardly use it as I already have a MacBook Pro. My need to move it around the house etc is virtually zero and, as I have the MacBook Pro anyway, I think I have the best of both worlds here. I hadn’t really considered the fact that when I have used my laptop in the past, it has always been plugged into an external monitor so why not just have an all in one! Thank you, thank you, thank you 😀

Another plus of the I-Mac over the MacBook Pro, especially if you want your keyboard to have the numeric key pad is that when ordering the I-Mac, you can choose the Keyboard with the Numeric Keypad for $30 more. You would need to pay about the same or more, and have one more device around. I do wish Apple would put a numeric keypad, at least on the 16 inch model, just put the speaker bar above the keyboard and you would have room to put the numeric keypad.
Since I have already ordered my 12.9 inch I-Pad Pro (which would be my portable device), I plan to get the larger I-Mac with the M1X chip and a keyboard with the numeric keypad and touch ID. I also plan to get the mouse and trackpad.

Ideally I would have gone for the red Variant but I honestly couldn't stand that salmon pink on the front. The lilac accents complement my little Art room well, hence choosing the purple iMac. Though I see your point and I personally love my iMac, MacBook Pro and iPad Pro (I use all 3 daily), but I can tell you with experience that over 90% of people (business users, lawyers, students, professors etc.) prefer laptops and do not use any external monitor ever (leave alone needing two external displays). Most people who buy iPad, buy a simple 9 to 11 inch iPad for media consumption (without any magic keyboard type set-up), so need they the laptop for greater productivity and using MS Office or other business applications. Even people who do not take the laptop out of their house much, still love its portability to use it on any table in any room of the house, and to use it in bed, or to hold it on their lap.

Only one point which stops me that recently i visited to few showrooms to have a look but unfortunately both apple showrooms were not having the mouse and keyboard in working condition. They said its not working and we are about to get these repaired.
Now this demotivated that if i but imac, will i also have this bad experience of mouse and keyboard?

I have a few questions because of my circumstances.
Is the iMac easy enough to move to different rooms almost daily or should I go with the MacBook then?
Would moving the iMac so often damage it since it’s meant as a desktop?
How easy would it be for the iMac to fall off of something like a small table if bumped?
Would it break if it fell?
See if I were to get a computer my mom and I agreed to split the cost and she can use it when she needs it which is most mornings for zoom meetings. Then I would be using it in the evening. But there is no spot in the house that the iMac can permanently stay except in my room, so it would get moved often. Eventually when the pandemic ends completely my mom won’t need to be on zoom so much if at all and the computer will be able to stay in my room but that is unknown if it will be soon or not for years. Right now we use an iPad mini 4 for zoom so you can see why we might want something better.
The iMac would be better for zoom because of the 1080p camera, bigger screen and speakers, (I also love the green color option). but the portability of the MacBook Makes it really hard to choose between the two. Any thoughts would be helpful

Interesting perspective. Everyone has different needs. As an audio professional who travels constantly the Macbooks are a better choice. That being said I did just invest in an M1 Mac Mini that will stay in my home studio. This will allow me to have the M1 power on my regular travels as well as a bit more powerful desktop when I am at home. There is something nice about the flexibility of the laptops. Adding to your point the mostly at home folks would be getting an amazing unit with those imacs! All very cool!

I have an 21 inch 4K iMac (2017 model) that I use as my main computer at my desk. It is mainly used for programming. However, every year at the start of our winter I do regret being limited to the freezing study and not being able to go to bed with a Macbook Pro / Air so that I can carry on from there. I am keen to see the new models of Macbook Air with the new colors towards the end of the year, maybe that might entice me enough to buy a laptop for winter time...

I'm retired now, but never did use the MacBook Pro to its full advantage. I'd say I"m pretty much a stationary computer user. I use the iPad mini for reading in bed or on the patio (gave up the Kindle), iPhone, & iPad Pro to take to classes or watch training videos/Zooms next to my sewing/embroidery machine. I'm thinking of donating the iPad Pro to a local charity. Thanks, Greg, for the great info.

I've owned laptops for many, many years because I liked the portability and also the battery is a backup against power failures. I live in Florida so we get power issues a lot. My current laptop is 8 years old and the battery doesn't work anymore so I've lost the back up ability. I did order a battery but the first time I used it, it failed so I decided not to put any money into this machine and I will buy another computer when this one dies. I am retired now so I don't need to take my computer anywhere and with todays smart phones being so good at doing just about anything on the Internet, I can just use the phone when being mobile. I am a Windows user but I'm impressed with the new M1 chip and the iMac. It has a 23.5" screen at 4.5K and my laptop has a 17" screen at 1080.

Marco Arment says the LG UltraFine monitor is "fine". Not great, but it's in the name, it's fine. As in it'll do… It's not a real Retina display.
My old 13" MacBook Pro (mid-2012) that I bought in 2014 has been tied down to a USB hub loaded up with fat hard drives for several years now. I'm looking forward to getting a new Mac mini to take over the MacBook's current duties so I can start using my MacBook as a portable again.
I'm still considering getting a new MacBook Air because I feel this latest model is the ultimate form of its design. With the M1 the MacBook Air has finally come into its own. It's everything the 12" MacBook wanted to be but it was hobbled by that miserable intel Core-M CPU.

The iMac M1 weighs less than 10 lbs. it can be easily moved from room to room, and you have the 24 in. display.

I’m having this debate right now, my 27 inch iMac died over the weekend, might be the power supply, will take a couple of weeks to fix, if I’m lucky. So I needs something now, but don’t want to be stuck with 2 desk tops and the iMac I want needs a bigger SSD so a 6 week built time. So I’m leaning towards the MacBook Pro. Also I really want the bigger iMac, but who know when we might see that?

iMac 27 inch or bigger Yes but not the small-baby-blue iMac 24 inch . looks like a joke because of the colours . For me the 16 inch MBP is also a nice solution because it offers way more ergonomics, 16 inch offers enough workspace, you can tilt, you can put it on a nice stand and connecting to an external nice monitor and having the beauty of having two screens .

I completely agree! If you listen to factual. reviewers/reviews, they'll agree-the Air is the best value and probably the one Mac most laptop users should consider. Personally, I have owned many Macs and I really think the Air is my favorite.

@@robertsacha7285 I completely agree. A lot of tech reviewers get caught up on specs and some hype. I’ve been using the M1 MBA and it rocks. I’ve also been using macs since the early 2000’s. The M1 MBA is hard to beat and would work very well for 99% of the population.

Why would one want an Apple desktop if you are not doing video editing or something similar ?
I think this will be the iMac’s downfall many will buy it for its beautiful aesthetics (which it does have) but have nothing to use it for as gaming is fairly restricted on Apple products anyway and many other jobs you can do on much cheaper smaller portable products such as tablets and smartphones.
