After all these years, I'd not heard of them before their Beat Club appearance recently popped up on TH-cam. Peanut Butter is now one of my favourite 60s songs.
I'm pretty sure Lennons comment wasn't meant in the way it's (conveniently for the narrative) being portrayed here, I would imagine what 'playing guitar' meant to him wasn't merely the act of playing (or any ideas of female emancipation) but more about the long uncomfortable grubby hours on the road and shitty digs, not to mention the dangers at the rough end of touring the late night clubs which was a volitile unsafe enough environment even for a male, yes Lennon was snarky, but what I've read/heard of/from him (which is quite extensive) his ascerbic quips were generally followed by a balanced thought-out and often poignant qualifier, there was always a wider point he was making with his jibes, also his mother taught him guitar so it's not like it was a foreign concept to him, pretty poor that these gals have twisted his words to fit their story
Why are you making stuff up? You weren't there and you have no special expertise. It's been reported that he said just ONE thing to them which was: "Girls don't play guitars" and that's it. If he'd said something more then it would've been mentioned. I'm not sure why you're so anxious to protect his image, but YOU'RE the one twisting words, no one else is.
Needs to be a film
Having read their story, it would be happy and tragic but a very worthy story to be shown on screen..
I agree, make a movie for the movie theaters
Search TH-cam. There’s a really good 15-minute documentary fro a few years ago, also featuring Sylvia & Mary.
These gals are wonderful.
The handful of old Beat Club videos are a joy to watch, especially Sylvia’s unfailingly happy vibe.

Awesome ladies!!
I love the LIVERBIRDS
What a great band
Girls can play instruments and can sing and can earn gold records , any time anywhere any type of music
Jesus is Lord over the LIVERBIRDS
They should reform begin playing as The Liverspots.
Yawn..........
Great catchy band but comparing them to the "female Beatles" um, c'mon, let's be real here.
They were four women from Liverpool, so it was an obvious comparison and selling point.

Mary thought he was being sarcastic and trying to encourage them. It's the presenters twisting the words.
