If you like videos like this, please consider joining my Patreon: patreon.com/mr_volt Glad to finally share this with everyone! Wheatley's been a long time coming. Is he perfect? No, but I hope he makes you happy. Here's some FAQs: You forgot about (X) Why doesn't he have (X) feature from the game? I've spent over 300hrs to get to this point and some features didn't make the cut for this video, but I'm aware of them. Things like eye VU meter/flashlight are to be added etc. What about (popular voiceline)? While I included some of the voicelines, some of the "angrier" ones looked odd with his body not moving, so those will be saved for when he's on the MR arm. Can you import the animations from the game? No. My model is mechanically very different from the game model internally. Will you make me one? Nothing for sale unless (until?) I get approval from Valve :)
"Can you import the animations from the game? No. My model is mechanically very different from the game model internally." Can you try to recreate the animations from the game?
As far as the animations go - Even though the model is mechanically different, it has a lot of the same degrees of freedom (ie- the eye assembly can pan/tilt, etc). I'm sure SOMEONE could come up with a script that does some funky forwards/inverse kinematics and converts the animation, although I'm definitely not doing it and you surely have enough on your plate.
IMAGINE THIS!! GAME AWARDS AND THE ONE GIVING THE AWARD IS WHEATLEY!! And animation of him, FINNALLY on earth and then some robots put him in front of the crowd!
the animation for the voice line at 3:55 is actually perfect. the amount of detail on this thing is so damn good. you even added the ripped up sticker that wheatley has on the left side of his face. usually nobody ever gets that or let alone notices it lmao
Here's an idea: Program some keyframed animation and feed it to the animatronic wheatley! It might be possible to make the movements faster and much more robotic, like he is in-game, without using the puppet control mechanism.
For sure! Keyframe animation will be necessary once he's on the rail, since that will add at least five more degrees of freedom that I can't puppet simultaneously.
I wonder how hard it'd be to translate across the game's animations to the servo positions, so you could then feed the original choreo scenes right into this Wheately. VCDs are text so you could pull out timing at least.
@@Wertyhappy27 Maybe make it so there's a 3D computer model that synchronizes each part with the physical animatronic, making it so that you could move a part of the 3D model, and it'll move the animatronic the same way in real time (with delays, of course). That way, you could set up pre-made animations that the animatronic could directly read and replicate.
@@teamspen210 Itd likely take a lot of work to make the original animations work, at least considering the fact that some of them make his parts clip into each other. It's probably better to just fully recreate them.
This is a mann of passion, commitment and pure [REDACTED] will. I've been here since you constructed GLaDOS and am happy that it's all come this far. I aspire to have the dedication of people like you and thank you genuinely for your work. I hope VALVE sees this video, and that it instills them with new motivation to see their fan base going to such lengths.
The first personality Core that has the moveable eye. That’s awesome because everyone that wants to build one for himself too, sees that it’s possible. That Wheatley absolutely rocks man!
I love that Aperture took their name and logo from the camera setting, so the thing that makes Wheatley’s iris expand and retract is called an Aperture and therefore it is a pun
I swear, one day the fans are going to build a replica of Aperture Science Laboratories on their own, just because they can. This small fandom has some talented, very dedicated people that might even turn the entire game into reality which is a terrifying but amazing thought.
That is outstanding. Honestly, I bet you could get Wheatley to star in some live action portal skits. I don't know if they're still being made nowadays, but I remember a few back in the day. He's a wonderful prop and I just wanna see him talk all day. This project has made my 13 year old dreams come true, and my 22 year old dreams, aswell.
This has got to be one of my favorite channels. I’m a big portal fan and I love mechanical design, so you basically combined two of my favorite things in one. I’ve been following the whole process of you making Wheatley and I’m super impressed. Keep up the great work!
I do hope Valve takes you up on that offer. It would be so cool to see that animatronic next to the Level 1 Sentry that’s already there, as well as the Portal Turret animatronic
Very very cool! I noticed that some voice lines don’t move as much, however it is still very impressive! Is it because of integrity issues, or something else? Also is it possible to hook him up to a management rail?
Moving parts have momentum, which can be disregarded in a 3D model but not in real life. Some movements are just impossible to replicate 1:1 simply because the weight of parts being moved around doesn't allow for it.
Would it ever be possible for you to add the ability for his eye to extend/retract forwards and backwards? It's a pretty significant aspect of Wheatley's dialogue in the game.
In the game, Wheatley's face clips through his shells when he does this. For it to work in real life, the face mechanism has to started retracted so that "popping out" doesn't smash into the body, but if the face assembly is retracted, this limits how much he can look around, because my design has motors/etc where there are none in the game model. If you check out the MK II design video, you can see the clearances between parts are very tight, often 1mm or less.
Absolutely amazing, it really feels like Wheatley popped into the real world! The only "flaw" would be that he is slightly slow in his movements, but he MOVES!!! Great stuff!
You should make a tutorial for Wheatley. He's quite complex and some people might not know how to put him together. But I have to say, this is the best Wheatley replica I have seen!
This man just straight up recreated Wheatley from Portal 2 IRL. I know it's extremely difficult to replicate Wheatley's every moving mechanism, and even more difficult while he is talking, but 3:55 is the most Accurate motions I have ever seen! I don't care how many features you have added, or how much closer you can bring Wheatley to reality, I am just really glad that you tried your best to make Wheatley IRL. Keep up the amazing job!!

I love the fact at one point my favorite murder-sphere is held together by what looks like a few oversized binder clips at the seams. We love that sort of ingenuity and frugality here at Aperture Science!
This is a really cool Wheatley core. I advise you to keep it in good condition until better times. If in the future scientists can really create artificial intelligence, then this will be a good chance to load it inside your Wheatley core.
Those Servo seemed a little weak to be able to move everything for any extended amount of time, so you might have to end up replacing them after a week or so. And I would replace them but something more capable of handling the load and making the most movements a little more realistic less strained and bouncy. I would also mounted it on something that doesn't bounce all over the place to give it more integrity and its presence it'll give it a feeling of being more official. I would also design a program that detects the movements of the actual character on screen and transpose them into the correlating joints and movements into your actual machine that way you could pick up on the actual mannerisms of the character
One other feature I thought of: remember in the beginning of the PORTAL 2 game where your in the relaxation room, wheatley comes in and tells you how long you've been in hibernation, his eye extends out of his sphere shaped body. I just thought that would be cool to see, although I still like how you built it a lot, Congratulations.

Getting recommended this was so nice! 10/10 for wheatley and 10/10 for handsome guy talking about said robot 😆👌✨
puppet master line was a little too ironic lmao but seriously this is badass! amazing work and dedication

Awww wish you played the clip of him talking about a boy band waiting for Chell in the pitt.
This is so well done, I thought it was animated at first. Good job!
this is very VERY cool and you can not be stopped but feels like he is always looking down
This is incredible, I’m not sure what else to say other than I want one and I want this man working at valve
3:00 The back doesn't have a port, you know: round, has 3 holes in it.
But yes it is accurate as accurate can be, i'll tell you that much. Great job!
It's incredible, I don't understand why you have so few subscribers. Waiting for the turret.
I think I saw someone make a puppet of Wheatley as well, where they could control his eye movement and stuff. Really cool!
