  • The Oak Mountain Acotts set the Vallee Big Red Sawmill up close to the sugar shack build site so that they could start to process some large Fir and Spruce saw logs. They used the Kubota B2601 with the Kranman T1750 Hydraulic Timber Trailer to bring the saw logs into the yard. They then used the Kioti CK35 and slings to load the logs onto the table of the Vallee Big Red Sawmill.
While they are just getting started, they are producing some nice 16 foot 8" x 8" cants as well as some 6" x 6" x 12' long cants and some 3" x 6" rafter material.

We are not professionals by any means! It seems there is quite an art to sawing but we’ll get better with lots of practice!

That is just a matter of time until I have to buy a sawmill! And this is your fault! Lol! You sure don't get a sawmill to make 2x3's. But when it comes to 8x8-16ft, that pays for itself! That is going to be a nice building. Even more, being able to build it with your father is the best part of it. Thanks!

Sorry Joe! I bet you will thank me later though! Check out the logfather’s channel from Nova Scotia… Jeff is like you and can build anything. He built his own sawmill! Take care, Jason.

Nothing like building a timber frame structure with trees sourced and milled right off your own property. Looking forward to the next episode in the sugar shack build series.

Wondered what you had for milling. Looks like that is your dads baby. I hope you get a lot of milling done and explain some of your cutting decisions.
Something I am curious about is my cants are flat to the bunk but when I mill further at times they seem to Crest or bow.
    Helpful hints along the way.
    Nice set up.

Hi Earl, Dad has learned a lot over the last year with the mill. He has spent hours speaking with other mill owners as well. We sawed some 16’ x 2” x8” last year and experienced the bowing. Nice square cant to start and then nothing square came off of the mill. The blade was hunting for position and we ended up with a mess. A sawyer advised that sometimes you just get a bad tree. They are loaded with stress and as you open them up, this can happen. His advice was to cut your loss early and move onto the next log. We will get some more videos on and I’ll have Dad do some talking. Thanks for watching!

You and your dad have a great operation. Like the way dad strapped the double pick. Awesome looking timbers right there for sure. Good teamwork 👍

Thanks Bob. My Mom is Dad's helper on the mill... I can't keep ahead of them with the logs! Take care, Jason.

Great video I like the saw working and my grandson was dancing to the music I'm assuming your doing post and beam building witch would look nice board and batten siding I want one thanks for the video Jason

Good Morning! We are trying post and beam but putting it together with steel plate, lag bolts and tek screws.... hoping it turns out. Definitely closing it in with 1" thick boards installed vertically... haven't decided on the traditional batten yet or going with a "shingle" vinyl siding. We kind of plan as we go along sometimes! Take care, Jason.

Do you need an engineering stamp in order to use your own lumber in a structure?

I think we are good as long as it is under a certain square footage and not intended for human habitation.

    Hi Jason!!😀😀
Big Red is a really nice mill and does a great job of sawing. Your father might have something to do with that. LOL!!
I thought you would have just sat the logs on the mill with the timber trailer. That's how I always did it when I used to borrow my buddies LT40 wood Mizer and then I would lift the beams off and stack them with it. Looks like you still have several to go yet.
    Take care my friend!!😀😀

Thanks Al. I'm trying to stay ahead of the sawyers... I normally have the log trailer in the woods with me chasing more saw logs! We were just getting things setup in this video and I was moving some old stock onto the new pad for him! If I could catch up, I would definitely use the loader for that purpose! Thanks for stopping by, Jason.

How's she goin'? This is going to be a nice project Jason. Gong to the woods and getting your own logs, milling them into what you want and then building the sugar shack with them. Pretty nice. A post and beam building I'm guessing by your description. Looking forward to seeing it come together!! Take care!!

Hi Mike, we are going to try the post and beam design but plan to use metal plate, lag bolts and timbered screws to put it together... Wish us luck! Thanks for watching, Jason.

    Nice Video!
How much do you pay for the sawing? Price per hour?
    Greetings from Germany!

    • @OakMountainAcotts
      @OakMountainAcotts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi! Thanks for stopping by all the way from Germany! This saw mill is my Father's so I expect the price will be quite reasonable (free!). The Honda engine does not use much gas and the blades cost $50 a piece and will saw for 6 - 8 hours. The blades can be sharpened for around $10 each here in New Brunswick. I had some material sawed 10 years ago by a mobile Sawyer and he charged me $350 per thousand board feet. Take care, Jason.
