It's the ym2612, it's the one in the Yamaha synths of the 80s
@@crumbly8255 The YM3438 is a newer version of the YM2612. The very late Model 1s and earlier Model 2s use an ASIC version of it but they suffer from poor sound quality due to a bad mixing circuit. Later Model 2s went back to using a discrete YM2612 just like most Model 1s.
@@bioman1hazard607 the YM2612 in particular is only used in the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis, some Sega arcade game systems, and the Fujitsu FM Towns series.

In 0:52, Channels 2 to 4 have the same instrument as the Sonic 3 Miniboss piano in Channel 3 and 4.

that instrument is a kind of "default" for the system. Most early games used default instruments because it was good enough.

I mean, yeah, but why would you use the pulse wave channels (shown in white) for square waves when you have dedicated square wave channels (shown in cyan)?
If you want rounded edges on that waveform for a smoother sound.
@CreepimusGaming well I mean a distorted guitar's waveform is very close to a square wave
and the PSG can do stereo on the Game Gear
@CreepimusGaming either that or because they wanted the sound, but couldn't get it out of the PSG in stereo
@@Nimta in my experience, the PSG is a bit quieter than the YM2612, and like others have said, it's not stereo.
@@NoahtheEpicGuy Notable that this and every other song in this game is in mono anyways. Each channel only has one wave display instead of two because there's no need for showing both sides of each channel. No stereo.

I didn't know the YM2612 was capable to generate square waves (no, I am not talking about the PSG channels).
The Streets of Rage ("1") opening music is a good example of the FM imitating the PSG. that actually uses both, playing the same notes.

@fort pingas The PSG? I wish it could. It can only do a square wave on the first two channels and a weird setup for the 3rd and 4th channels. Channel 3 is a square wave but it can only play if Channel 4 isn't, and Channel 4 can be noise or what seems to be a 12.5% duty cycle square wave. It's weird. I just discovered the weird channel 4 behavior literally right now while messing around in DefleMask.
I wonder if the Genesis itself could do the oscilloscope view? It would have been neat to see how much is going on inside that little chip in the machine on an actual game.

Sorry for asking, I know how to do the whole deconstruct thing, but how do you show the piano roll, I would like to learn how to do that instead of begging someone to do it for me
They use "foobar2000", but I don't really know the whole process. So I use foobar to export individual channels and silence parts in Audacity.
For the oscilloscope, I don't remember how they make them, but I use nyanpasu64's corrscope.
I dont know if you do requests but i would love if you made a deconstruction of the boss theme in Mighty morphin Power Rangers for the snes

He cant, the present and future tracks use red book audio, so he cannot deconstruct them like the 16-bit tracks .
