Hey buddy! Awesome, awesome tutorial on the modularity and accuracy gains through the multiple Ways of tunning this Awesome moderator/air stripper system! As we enter into the high power world of slugs and long distance shooting, harmonics and post muzzle air management becomes exponentially more important and is the final equation to accuracy... extremely well done PJ! 😎
I agree. You have approached this in a very scientific manner providing objective data. There is always going to be a degree of subjectivity in this area of sound perception. I would personally like to see some big bore testing with the Yokozuna comparable to this testing with the Ryu. I have seen that the DonnyFL site has no moderators currently listed. What is your take of the federal government stepping in to accessory ban screw on barrel moderators? Thank you.
@@SilverShadow2LWB my preference would be that air and CO2 powered BB and pellet/slug firing rifles and pistols be left out of the scope of what is regulated as they are not firearms.
@@WiscAirGunners I wholeheartedly agree with you. All it's going to take is for someone to screw on a moderator with metal internal cones, partitions, or mechanisms onto a real firearm. Many can just screw onto a real firearm. It is not a ban against pellet guns, but if that part could be illegally used on a firearm without a license. It's the few knuckleheads that will ruin it for the majority of responsible PCP owners.
I would say the first priority of using a moderator is to reduce sound. With these new moderators you may be able to get away with leaving out a section to get better harmonics but to me that is not ideal. Where for me the harmonics come into play for accuracy is with shooting slugs at higher power. For pellets different moderator weights and types has not made as much difference unless you have a long untensioned shroud with a heavy moderator on. I tend to use the FX tuner shrouds and tuners on my airguns to get the best accuracy for slugs and they always shoot pellets well too. I do not have any tensioned barrel systems and have found in general shorter barrels can handle heavier moderators and long barrels tend to need lighter moderators when using the FX tuners to avoid excessive barrel whipping. What I would like to see come to market is a moderator with a built in tuner. Then you can have the full benefit of the moderator sound suppression. I do appreciate your videos.
I agree. I’ve used prototype tuning moderators and with the right airgun, they are the premier barrel tuning tool. I’m not sure you’ll see one hit the market anytime soon. Barrel system design definitely matters when it comes to how much a length or weight change of the system impacts precision, and there are definitely barrels that get too whippy when anything more than a Tatsu gets attached.
@@WiscAirGunners Thanks for the reply. The FX tuners like I said really did have an dramatic effect on shrinking slug group sizes. What I did not like about them was they did not have a quality durable finish. Also the threading on them was not consistent on the ones I owned and at times making them hard to adjust.
I know it would be really hard to edit but would you be able to do the noise comparisons without the sound of the impact, cut the play back a frame or 2 before the pellet hitting where it's going Alternatively you could do the sound test in a field with no impact noise just the sound of the gun sending the lead ?
Great no!w you have given me something ELSE to tune on my gun! You should try with a tensioned barrel. Would think on something like a TJ tensioned system you really wouldn't see much of a change due to the stiffness of the barrel. But it would still be cool to see what would happen.
As I've send before, I really enjoy your work. You are easy to understand (audio-wise) and don't "rush things. So I have a RAW Micro in .22 and I love it with 15.89 JSB at 790 fps and 22 ft pounds. I( am a real "fan" DonnyFL and have a Ronin (for my Panthera 600mm in .22), a Yokozuna in .22 on my FX Hunter Compact in .22 and Ryu on my RAW Micro in .22. So, if I am not mistaken, you ented up with Ryu and 2 baffles in RAW Micro in .177 (.22 cal Ryu). So does that imply that the most accurate configuration on my Micro is 2 baffles inasmuch as my RAW Micro is .22 ? I have FX Panthera Hunter in .22, Brocock/Brk Atomic XR in .22 and RAW Micro in .22. Each is very accurate but my overall favorite is the RAW Micro in .22 for accuracy and build quality. I made no changes out of the box with my Micro and it was perfection in all respects as it came out of the box, no changes to anything, using the 15.89 JSB pellet. I have never had that out of the box experience with anything other than the RAW Micro. I usually have to spend 1 day and hundreds of pellets to tune my other PCPs. I am looking into putting a 24" RAW .22 cal barrel on my Micro for versatility. I am waiting for a response from RAW. Your thoughts on this? Again, thanks for your great videos.
First, thank you. Second, I'm not convinced that my results with this airgun/moderator combo will extend to other calibers of the same airgun. I'd like to think it's a good starting point. If you have a .22 I'd use a .25 Ryu. Third, a new barrel, especially switching from a shrouded barrel with it's own stripper to a "plain" barrel is a different animal entirely and I have no data on how that would work out. Fourth, RAW puts a lot of work into each airgun before they go out. I think you are seeign the results of that care.
Thank you for the video and, as usual a rich trove of information. I have a coupe of questions but not about the ryu: at what velocity do you shoot the .177 10.34gr in this particular rifle and what the barrel’s length is?
great looking product. How much does the adapter add to the barrel length? my maverick is already tight in it's case :). Do I need to go up to a .25 for a .22 Maverick or is this considered on the barrel?
It’s not more than a few mm longer than the shroud threads on an FX rifle. The Maverick shroud has a internal hard connection to the barrel so I’d feel confident in running a .22 on a .22.
@@WiscAirGunnershello good day dear. Sorry you busy. Help me? I used fx maverick sniper .22 cal 700 mm barrel. Donnfyl ryu you think very good accuracy? Or sumo the best?

Fantastic Video! I have an Evanix .25 Max Air II Bullpup that is pretty loud. The current DonnyFL FX .30 tamed it a bit but I want it to be quieter. The Donny I have is 1.36" X 5". Is there a big difference in sound reduction from Yokozuna vs Ryu? I'm undecided on which one to buy.
I have a M3 .25 cal 700mm barrel with the tensioned barrel and a BC carbon fiber shroud. Would you still recommend upgrading to a bigger caliber size on the Ryu? Shooting mk2 34gr
I’d recommend the Yokozuna. You should be good with the .25 size. When you go to the CF shroud you loose the shroud, which acts like an expansion chamber in concert with your moderator. The Ryu might not be able to keep up.
I would because I like the compact gun, how it balances, and the trigger is awesome. There are lots of airguns that are purpose built for the sport, so someone with more experience might give you a different answer. The new AirArms field trget rifle is supposed to be pretty awesome, and Thomas certainly is the one I've heard people talk the most about, but it's more than twice the price and you wait to have one made.
What is the speed difference between with and without ? something you have to consider I think ? the moderator reduce a little the speed of the bullet so if you set up your gun without moderator and the same speed wit moderator, you should probably have the same groups ?
With a direct threading to the barrel or an internal bushing that ensures that the barrel is and stays concentric to the shroud (using DonnyFL sizing-other companies size differently-I'll go .22 on a .22. For an air rifle like the AvengeX, where the barrel is floating within the shroud, I'd go a size up. In the Ryu-Yoko world, that would be a .25. For the Tatsu or Sumo, a.22/25 will work.

DonnyFL is not selling moderators direct to customers, but the dealer network has units in stock. A new international facility has been set up to serve the global community.
You will see some of the anodizing flake off. It is a byproduct of the friction fit design, and it will not effect the performance of the unit. When the DonnyFL team experimented with different coatings (and uncoated) we found that there needed to be a snug fit or the unit would work loose when shooting. Every Ryu and Yokozuna is test fit before it leaves during final assembly, and the jig we use gets hundreds of installs before it is replaced. I've used those on my personal rifle and they still function properly, though they aren't as pretty as a new one. The corners wear down a bit, but the actual bearing surface (the part that matters) stays flat and true.
