    Man man man ,this video arrived just in time,I was literally today at home depot,looking at the different products,and when u got to potting soil,I almost dropped dead,shit 15$ for a bag!! I have around 200 different plants seeded and getting ready to be grown in containers! You just saved me ton of $ !! Thank you soo much

      So expensive. Toss is some lime to your pots too if you are using a lot of peat and not much over other materials. Helps with the lower pH of peat. Not much just light handful.

      Yeah it’s ridiculous. It’s embarassing really. Most people don’t realize that most of these potting mixes are the same ingredients as garden soil. Just not in the same ratios. Buy a few bails of the cheap garden soil, a few bags of compost, some peat moss, perlite and you’re going to get a huge pile of potting soil. And at a fraction of the price if you outright buy the bags of potting mixes. Takes a bit of labor to mix them up, but saves a ton of cash.

    Its so funny, that is EXACTLY what I did this year. I was going to order compost but no one is delivering here yet. I went to Lowes and got that same peat moss, organic black earth, did those at 50/50, and then added a couple of scoops of shrimp compost, couple scoops of aged horse manure, some bone meal and blood meal, and veg fertilizer. I saved so much money over what it would have been to order it from a place like big yellow bag. My transplants seem to be enjoying it there so far!

    Thank you Gary your videos are very informative I learn so much from watching them. I just recently bought a few bags of miracle gro potting mix and garden soil and repotted all my tomato and pepper transplants in gallon containers with the potting mix. The soil was so heavy and felt damp and smells like serious mildew so I mixed extra peat like the green bags in the video, the soil does not seem to dry up, I fear all my plants will die before I transfer to my new raised beds. Should I repot with something else completely add more peat and perlite? It just looks like mud so strange I never had issues with MG before. I definitely will be using this video as a guide for my garden beds I'll be filling soon.

      It is flying! Ended up getting vermiculite from Amazon, I need more peat but I'm still out a month or so from planting in CT so I can wait a few weeks to see if it restocks. Starting a new raised bed this year so I'll need quite a bit of a mix to go in. I ordered compost from a local landscaper, $12.50 a yard, that's a great bargain! My little tumbling composter will only make about 15 lbs. I did go ahead and get the MG potting mix for my grow boxes, have quite a few to put together and it makes figuring how much I need easier.

    Great video. I like Mel's mix as my potting soil base (peat moss, compost, vermiculite) and I add whatever amendments I like. Potting mix gets some perlite added for lightness and drainage. If it is going in the ground, then I mix in some of my beautiful clay soil to give it a micronutrient boost. And I always add some organic granular fertilizer for good measure. Works great!

    Gary is always looking out for us. I started with the bagged products just to get my feet wet, but when I crunch the numbers, it's so much cheaper to just do it myself. Can't wait to start mixing now that I know better. My earth is just the worst clay soil, so I'll go with garden soil. Thanks!

      Clay mixed in helps btw. it helps buffer acidity of peat and adds micronutrients. But I hear ya. Takes a lot of work to make that top layer of good garden soil.

      My mother had clay soil in her Wisconsin garden and she grew the most drop dead delicious tomatoes 🍅 I’ve ever come across and I still dream about them today. Not to mention delicious carrots, green beans, lettuce 🥬, and 17 other things. I know because I dug her garden by hand in 1967 when I was 10 years old. I noticed a LOT of clay in the soil, but it seemed to work out exceptionally well.

      I use a big green tarp and a flat shovel to mix all my ingredients. I pile the bags on one corner and shovel it to the opposite corner, then back to the opposite, opposite corner. After about 30 or 40 minutes of this when I can't see any portions or piles of unmixed stuff, I break out my #10 pots to fill. I take my hand and gently push the soil down to give it a bit more density. Then scoop out a hole in the center for the root system of my toms, bury it up past the cut off lower branches and top off the pots to near the rim. I may stick in a piece of plastic strip to ID the variety of get a chunk of tape and put in on the rim. I wonder if people still use those up side down hanging grow bag pots that were all the rage a few years back. I don't hear about them these days.

    Thanks Gary for the detailed explanation of these bagged products. Two years ago I followed your suggestions and made my own mix for raised beds and containers with peat moss. One thing I learned this year from a big setback on my tomato seedlings is that peat moss is more acidic than I thought. I used your method of mixing peat moss and vermiculite and sterilizing them for seed starting. To save even more money, I didn’t get Jiffy starter mix like you previously showed. Instead, I used the peat moss straight from the 3 cubit big bale. My seeds germinated and started growing for the first three weeks. On the 4th week the bottom leaves of seedlings began to turn yellow. I made sure I didn’t over or under fertilize them nor did they get any diseases. Yesterday I found out the PH level was way too acidic so the seedlings were not able to absorb nitrogen from the water soluble fertilizer (quarter strength). I noticed that in the Jiffy starter mix contains lime as PH adjuster. Perhaps that’s what I should’ve added in my own mix. Hopefully this experience is helpful for some who are perplexed with the same thing like I did and for your future reference. Happy gardening 😇

    Subscribed. Times are strange. Peat moss hard to find. Online I find 3 cubic feet of peat moss $50.00
    Stores near me unavailable. Found a tractor supply store 2 counties away $13.00 for 2 cubic feet. I bought 5.
    Had 3 yards top soil and 3 yards compost delivered.
    I raise rabbits. I have a yard of pellets saved up.. that's the mix I can do.

    I started to notice the similarities in some of the bagged products a few years ago. That's when I became a huge fan of peat moss and compost. I almost felt silly, once I realized that I was overpaying. Sometimes I still overpay for convenience, but it's a better feeling to make a choice to pay for convenience, rather than getting duped unknowingly. Nice to know my biology degree from Towson (back when it was Towson State) isn't going to waste 😉. I'm a MD girl too, born and raised. I don't live there anymore, but it's always nice when I hear you talk about MD stuff.

      I vary it. But if this makes sense. I fill a container halfway with the mix. I toss in 1-3 handfuls in the bottom and mix it through. I fill the rest and do the same thing. For reference... a 5 gallon paint bucket gets 1-2 handfuls in the bottom. Also depends on if I am adding compost.

    Peat is nowhere to be found. There are some coir bricks though. I prefer using well amended garden soil. I have sticky clay before amending when wet, but after amending it is better then anything you can buy. Although I wouldn't consider using my soil when considering selling plant starts. Your best bet is to go to a green waste place and get it in bulk. You don't need perlite, or vermiculite at all. They don't promote drainage. They are just a filler; you could do better with natural small wood chunks that are well aged.

    I'm a little confused by your 2:1:1 ratio. You call for compost (25%) and leaf gro/manure (25%). I have no trouble finding the bagged manure. Bagged compost is hard to find and expensive when I do find it. And most of the bagged manure says that it is compost. Can I, instead, use 50% composted manure to the base mix of soil and peat moss?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can just vary. 50% peat and 50% earth works. That 50% earth can be whatever you want between earth from your yard, compost, or manure. The problem is bagged stuff is not fully broken down or composted, so you have to know the company well.

      Now prices are up. Some of the bagged products are up too. Not as great as deal but the stuff you make is as good. Prices should come back down. A good mix now is peat and digging up edgings whatever from your property. 50-50 mix and add compost as you have it.

      @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Hey quick question if you don't mind, so I just got my bag of peat moss and I've been reading that it's on the acidic side so I wanted to ask what do you use to raise the PH? If you mix peat moss, compost, perlite/ vermiculite, and blood meal/ bone meal would you still need to add some mulch on top and also a fertilizer to raise pH level and for nutrients? I'm asking like for a bucket food grade or even a garden bed. Aslo would this work for fruit and vegetables?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would still mulch if you have really hot summer days. That helps and soil. Not sure what you mean by a adding a fertilizer to raise pH. But the pH should be fine as is. You blood and bone meal, cover Nitrogen and Phosphorous. You still need to cover potassium. You compost could be enough.

    To save even more cash, look for end of season deals on bags at box stores or hardware stores. They mark them down a lot to get them gone before late fall and winter. I try to replace bags of stuff I have used. Store these bags outside where they can't be cut or damaged. The important thing is never buy bags in the spring, if it can be helped. Some amendments will have to be available at full price. Just look for deals when possible.

It was a lil pricey to start but man the stuff goes a very long way and I re-amend every growing cycle for my indoor grass roots container mixes.
    Was using a 50/50 blend of Fox Farms ocean forest and Fox Farms Happy Frog. But it’s pretty expensive at 30 bucks a 1.5 cubic foot bag.. then I’d top dress with Gia Green and wow that was extremely expensive. Down to Earth is fraction of the price.
