@Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) Cheers for this, I been tryin to find out about "how to use garden soil" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Paylezobath Celebrated Process - (should be on google have a look )? It is a smashing one off product for discovering how to incorporate amazing landscaping designs into your home without the hard work. Ive heard some decent things about it and my friend got amazing results with it.
This was great, been searching for "what are the 6 types of soil?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Fonillian Uncomplex Future - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now )? It is an awesome exclusive product for growing up to 10 times more produce using aquaponics without the normal expense. Ive heard some decent things about it and my m8 got excellent success with it.

Thanks. There is no one right recipe so in this series I want to give principles and ideas so people can create their own path. Please visit my seed shop at www.therustedgarden.com Thanks.
I ended up finding some raised bed mix from Whitney Farms, then added peat moss to it (it has some, but not much), worm casting (a few handfuls) and perlite. This was for root pouches.

Thanks Gary. Great video. I'm doing potatoes for the first time ever this year and will be doing them in containers. I've been re-watching all of your old videos, as well as getting advice from some other "old timers" that have a lot more experience than I do, and I think I'll do alright, but it is the first time, so we'll see. Excited though!
They want to grow. And this basic set up I showed you works. I suggest you experiment too and try different ways and feedings. Good luck Please visit my seed shop at www.therustedgarden.com Thanks.

I literally just planted two potato plants a few days ago before the storms hit, and plan on planting the other 4 on Friday. However I started mine indoors in cups so they've already got full root systems. All of my plants are in containers though I've got some with the bottoms partially cut out as 'raised bed containers', so really looking forward to this series!
great video. I used a mixture of 1 part topsoil to 1/2 peat moss and 1/2 plant-based compost from a trusted nursery. I haven't mixed in any fertilizer but I do have some rock phosphate i might introduce into the mix. Mainly using it to build up several inground sections around the house. The goal is to eventually grow some herbs and tomatoes. I plan on starting this fall, we'll see how it goes.
Good luck. That mix sounds great. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
Congrats Gary love your video s they have helped so much over the years just ordered my new t shirt and now I am excited for both of us Happy Gardening and good luck with your new home and garden
I had a cherry tomato seedling a neighbor gave last year. Had two 17 gal tubs from Walmart $8 each. 1 with holes drilled in it 1 without. Filled the bucket with the cheap $1.90 compost mix , ground up egg shells and a pound of worm compost. Putting the tub with holes in the one without hole using as a self watering system. The tomato plant turned into four plants from the cuttings and it turned into a monster of a plant over 8’ tall. We had to give tomatoes away all summer. Zero maintenance, except for plucking horn worm caterpillars off the trees and feeding them to the bird.
Success! Nicely done. Check out my new Amazon Influencer's Shop. Anything you buy on Amazon helps The Rusted Garden when using my link. Ill be putting what I use in videos there for 2019. It is all set up by categories. Thanks. www.amazon.com/shop/garypilarchiktherustedgarden

I've learned that I'm not a fan at all of any sort of soil in raised beds or container gardens. My experience has been that it just compacts too much. Of course, it depends on the soil, and mine has more clay than others. But I'm foregoing it altogether this year. We'll see what happens!
Yeah I find it is the peat or coir that keeps it spongy. Of course regularly use of leaf compost fixes moist raised bed issues. Please visit my seed shop at www.therustedgarden.com Thanks.
Hi Gary. Thank you for sharing. I'm learning a lot from you and it is much appreciated. Looking forward to more in the future. When will we be getting an update on the tomato growing competition between you, Calikim and Jess? Blessings

That's a very nice video Gary.. question: do we need to add perlite or vermiculite? I live in a place where my topsoil is red soil and is slightly clayey.
That won't help your soil, it will just get pushed up. It can be done with gypsum, but it's cheaper to just grow stuff on top until it breaks down. Try effective microbes

What Tomatoes grow best in the 5 gallon buckets? I know dwarf or patio, but what about larger tomatoes rutgers, Dr. Wyches, beefsteak, etc? Thank you for these great videos, will watch your entire series!!
That is too hard to answer. But Rutgers is one. Best to see what I grow. I would go with in general 8 ounce or less in tomato size. Please visit my seed shop at www.therustedgarden.com Thanks.
How do you feel about Mel's Mix (1/3 peat moss, 1/3 compost, 1/3 vermiculite)? Let's hypothetically say you had all the ingredients on hand. Any reason you wouldn't use it?
So plants fall over in it in raised beds. LOL. In containers sure. But you have to supplement in micro nutrients and minerals less, you have great compost. I would use in containers not raised beds. Please visit my seed shop at www.therustedgarden.com Thanks.
I was just going to say that the "water reserve" feature IS NOT a good idea everywhere, but you beat me to it. It WILL RESULT in ROOT ROT in the PNW, where we get plenty of rain. I thought it was a great idea at first and bought some pre-made "self-watering" pots. After one of my ferns got root rot and died, I re-potted all the others (no small task) into regular pots. They had to be removed from the pot in order to remove the spacer at the bottom.
True. For plants like cukes and tomatoes it is more important than for other plants. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More

Nice videos, I like your work,,,,,Question,,,,when we talk about soil, compost and manure, if we obtain these products from our local nursery how can we be certain that they are safe to grow food in? Is there a way we can test to be sure that they are getting quality in their loads that they provide to their customers? Im not talking about OMRI listed bags of these products, but large piles that they have for sale there. I need to be sure that what Im growing in is safe,,,, TY for all your videos
Well you can get anything tested but you have to know what you are testing for. I dont bother. Look for established nurseries and just ask them how they make it etc. They works best. Thanks again for the awesome video. I always learn something new! Can potatoes take some frost? I imagine you are still at risk of frost in zone 7. I would love to get some early spuds started. Margaret
I use Peat Moss and the Leafgro Soil conditioner to make my soil to fill all my containers. We just started raising meat rabbits so this year I will be using their manure as some extra fertilizer instead of continuing to buy the Vermistera (sp) Worm castings tea that CaliKim suggested.
Nope. It just isnt needed. You can add it but you have the coir or peat that keeps it fluffy and the compost. Please visit my seed shop at www.therustedgarden.com Thanks.
problem with most bagged composted manures is that they're 90% compost, then some manure and sand. difficult to get any real composted (pure) manure. anyhow, even pure manures have very small NPK values, whilst useful in building soil. general recommendation for NPK soil analysis for veggies is 30:50:200 ppm. hard to obtain with home garden formulated ferilizers. most pot plants are killed by over-watering or occasionally becoming hydrophobic, using highly priced official "potting mix". your advice is valuable. coir and peatmoss help prevent plant drownings. Unfortunatelly with our well meaning organic mindsets, we're mostly working in the dark with regard to actual NPKCMS in our gardens and potting mixes, often going from one problem to another. this does not breed success so easily. waiting for portable specrometers to become available widely. suburban house soil is not just a tiny step away from perfect soil for veggies. if only tv gardening shows stopped marketing with false info and false premises about compost fixes everything.
I agree with commercialization of the garden products. I really like leaf compost. I like 100% worm casting in planting hole. But that is unregulated and hard to find. Organic soil would be basically compost right? I was wondering isn’t all dirt technically organic, maybe some more sustainable than others 🤷🏽♂️ Learning so much 🤯
Soil is a mix but compost is part of a good soil. Yeah all parts can be organic but ORGANIC matter is different. Compost has organic matter. Plain dirt has very little. Please check out The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop for all your gardening needs: www.therustedgarden.com
I have tried it and it works. But you do have to amend it with organic granular a bit. I have a question for you. I have a veg trug. I grew a lot of things in it last summer. My problem was, I was watering it so much. The soil recommended to use is container mix. I used Miracle Grow container/potting mix. Whatever it was it was by miracle grow. After watching this video I know I will need more soil. To cut down on watering should I just top up the veg trug with peat moss?
Yep add more peat or coco coir. The bag stuff is basically based on this but just doesnt have enough. Please visit my seed shop at www.therustedgarden.com Thanks.
What would you recommend for someone in an apartment who doesn’t have topsoil or a big pile of compost to pull from? Are there any ready-made soil mixes you recommend for container gardening?

Last year my potatoes over grew the greens even after flowering it just kept growing and few potatoes of any size. I used half compost half peat moss plus granulated fertilizer plus adding ashes. What nutrients cause potatoes to grow like that.

About having a water reserve at the bottom of the bucket: here at the edge of the tropical belt, we get scorching sun(over 30C May-Oct) but also torrential rain that lasts up to a week. Would you recommend doing that?

I scrolled down a ways and didn’t see this question (sorry if I missed it): if I used a larger container: is there any advantage for planting another layer of seed potatoes when the sprouts from the first layer get big enough to add soil? I’m talking about a determinant variety. Could you get more yield per container or is it too big of a drain on the soil?

i planted my potatoes indoors last week and out them in the greenhouse last night. do you think that greens, thyme, oregano, onion, and dill can stay in there from now on ? until i plant them that is.
I use one or the other. People like core because it is more sustainable. Coir has come down in price but peat is still cheaper. Having both doesnt provide an extra benefit. Hey,would 50% garden soil and %50 potting soil be a good mixture?my peppers and tomatoes were already growing I repotted them into containers and gave them fish emulsion and some plant food because the leaves were spotted yellow and wilting when I got them...That seemed to work immediately(which I got that remedy from your other video),I'm more worried about the soil mix.

At my costco during spring season potting mix is like $4.5/ cubic feet (miracle go brand). Do I need additional stuff in that like peet moss or coco coir etc.Any benefit of making your own stuff vs getting potting mix. I can see I will spending more money and time making my own. Not sure if this has some added benefits.
No that works on its own and it usually has a lot of peat. Making it yourself is sometimes better and 1/2 the cost. I'm not sure if you covered this question in one of your other videos already, but what do you think about the fabric pots? The reason I ask is, they're typically more economical but it may be a concern for not holding enough moisture?
Calkim29 uses smartpots/fabric bags. She has alot of info on her channel. I've never seen Gary use them. I used them last year, I checked them for moisture every day. They didn't do to bad. I watered them roughly every couple days.
Watering is an issue but they are effective. I just like pots. I will be growing in some fabric pots this year. Please visit my seed shop at www.therustedgarden.com Thanks.
If you are concerned about the compost being completed then use a thermometer to test it a foot deep or more. If it is significantly higher than the ambient temp, it is not done. If it is over 100 F, then it likely has quite a ways to go. When you buy animal manure at the big home repair stores, check it out. Those bags of "manure" are actually not just manure and are actually a mix of various things. I was really disappointed when I figured that one out.

Why do u use top soil/garden soil in the base ? Water retention? Is it a must? The base I put together is for seedlings and mature vegetables and herbs.. that I’ve learned from your videos 3 parts-peat 1 part compost or manure 1 part perlite 1/2 cup Top dress of ewc at transplant I also grow cannabis so I’m doing research for a base mix to use with dry ferts. tht I can use for herbs, vegetables and cannabis .. I tend to overwater so would u suggest leaving out the topsoil/garden soil , and just use the 3 main ingredients I mentioned .. should I use a different ratio for mature plants ? Or the 3-1-1 ratio will be fine for all stages of growth? Another ratio I would like to test is 70/30/20 v.s. 3-1-1 ratio
Nothing is a must. You can tweak it to your need for sure. The peat holds the moisture. the heavier top soil is just to add some weight and other elements. Nowadays. I say 50% peat or coco coir. and 50% your ground earth or bagged topsoil. But it just a base mix to start with. Once you have the base, you can make it lighter, add compost, etc Keyword search 'Black Friday' at my shop. Lots of sales are up. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN So garden soil or top soil is just an option right?, I can just stick with the Base mix- Peat or coco/compost or manure/perlite and tweak it to my liking right?
I have very sandy soil. I live less than a mile from the beach. If I wanted to make my own soil for pots using dirt from my ground, would the recipe be the same as mentioned here?
Hmmm. I might go 75% peat or coir and 1/3 sandy stuff. I dont think it will matter significantly. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
Hi Gary, I'm planning on building a raised Flower bed that will be in the front of home that will be constructed from retaining wall stone. it will be about about 20ft long 8 Ft depth and about 12 inches tall. would this mix be good for that? also will have the same in the back yard that will be about 24" tall. i'm planning to do flowers and trees, another on will have vegetables. please advise if there something that will need to be addressed. the retaining stones will be stacked on top of native soil and i planned on adding this soil mix on top. thank you
This mix would work. If you are doing a big project trying to get some really good compost laid in the bottom would help. Probably most cost effective is looking at local landscape companies many of them have a garden bed fill mix. Organic matter, compost, earth. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
Not outdoors. I found coir and peat are great at keeping it fluffy and it is cheaper. I experimented years past. Its more like eye candy when you see some perlite in the bagged stuff. Please visit my seed shop at www.therustedgarden.com Thanks.
Would you use vermiculite or perlite if your mix did not include peat or coco coir? For example would you do about 40% heavy topsoil, 40% compost and 20% perlite?@@THERUSTEDGARDEN
I have a source of rabbit manure (mixed with the pen litter/cedar chips). I understand rabbit manure does not need to be composted, but do you know if it's ok to use for a share of the compost part of the mix?
So I know goat manure is the perfection of animal manures. It needs little to no composting. I dont know about rabbit manure. I would just use it at 25% or less. Please visit my seed shop at www.therustedgarden.com Thanks.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN thanks...some people were saying non organic store bought could have disease. I have some 10 gallon grow bags. Would I need woodchips at the bottom of this or no because of the aeration? I will have to cut mine since they are large. Any other tips. I think they are russet or Idaho. Headed to your link now :) Good info about animal manure, I didn't know that.
I have to refresh my container soil this weekend and start warm weather crops. Could I start my cool weather now also to transplant out next month? Brassicas, lettuce, peas or beans? Thanks again.

I followed your suggestions for making my own container soil last year. I love your teachings. You are one of my favorite TH-cam gardener.

great video.

Molasses buckets are my container of choice this year 😊

That's a very nice video Gary.. question: do we need to add perlite or vermiculite? I live in a place where my topsoil is red soil and is slightly clayey.
That won't help your soil, it will just get pushed up. It can be done with gypsum, but it's cheaper to just grow stuff on top until it breaks down. Try effective microbes
Thanks for the info..

What Tomatoes grow best in the 5 gallon buckets? I know dwarf or patio, but what about larger tomatoes rutgers, Dr. Wyches, beefsteak, etc?
Thank you for these great videos, will watch your entire series!!

Hi Gary love your video have a question is this recipe good for growing any vegetables and also flowers 🌺 too
great video Gary
How do you feel about Mel's Mix (1/3 peat moss, 1/3 compost, 1/3 vermiculite)? Let's hypothetically say you had all the ingredients on hand. Any reason you wouldn't use it?
So plants fall over in it in raised beds. LOL. In containers sure. But you have to supplement in micro nutrients and minerals less, you have great compost. I would use in containers not raised beds.
Please visit my seed shop at www.therustedgarden.com Thanks.
Hello I love watching your videos I was wondering if you have any videos about your thoughts on the back to Eden gardening method

The potato slips are really far down in the container , is that how it should be .?🇯🇲👍✅❤️😍
Nice videos, I like your work,,,,,Question,,,,when we talk about soil, compost and manure, if we obtain these products from our local nursery how can we be certain that they are safe to grow food in?

Nice mix!
Please visit my seed shop at www.therustedgarden.com Thanks.
Gary, how about Perlite or Vermiculite for the mix?
Nope. It just isnt needed. You can add it but you have the coir or peat that keeps it fluffy and the compost.
Please visit my seed shop at www.therustedgarden.com Thanks.
Thank you!! I always learn a lot from your videos. When is it safe for me to plant my potatoes like this? Temps?
problem with most bagged composted manures is that they're 90% compost, then some manure and sand. difficult to get any real composted (pure) manure. anyhow, even pure manures have very small NPK values, whilst useful in building soil. general recommendation for NPK soil analysis for veggies is 30:50:200 ppm. hard to obtain with home garden formulated ferilizers.
most pot plants are killed by over-watering or occasionally becoming hydrophobic, using highly priced official "potting mix". your advice is valuable. coir and peatmoss help prevent plant drownings.

I was wondering isn’t all dirt technically organic, maybe some more sustainable than others 🤷🏽♂️
Learning so much 🤯
Soil is a mix but compost is part of a good soil. Yeah all parts can be organic but ORGANIC matter is different. Compost has organic matter. Plain dirt has very little.
Please check out The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop for all your gardening needs: www.therustedgarden.com
Gary can you use 50% leaf compost and 50% pest moss for potatoes? If not why would that be a problem?
Thanks for all your videos
I have tried it and it works. But you do have to amend it with organic granular a bit. Peat has no NPK value and leaf mold is very low and more for the organic matter

Sharon Browne miracle grow gets very hot, your climate is important. Too hot to use in Florida
@@judyhowell7075 I did not know this! I'm in Toronto, Canada. Now I haven't got a clue what I should be using.

Could oeat moss and coco coir be also replaved with leaf mold?
Last year my potatoes over grew the greens even after flowering it just kept growing and few potatoes of any size. I used half compost half peat moss plus granulated fertilizer plus adding ashes.
What nutrients cause potatoes to grow like that.
Maybe too much nitrogen. That is for leaf growth

About having a water reserve at the bottom of the bucket: here at the edge of the tropical belt, we get scorching sun(over 30C May-Oct) but also torrential rain that lasts up to a week. Would you recommend doing that?
I would if there can be an issue of total dry out of container soil.

I am afraid I would wind up killing plants by having too much moisture as I tend to inadvertently water too much. How about throwing some small nuggets of bark in it for better drainage, would that work?
That works for drainage. Good luck.

I live in the Southwestern part of Idaho and it gets pretty hot in mid-late summer. Should I opt for drilling a hole on the side of the container or holes on the bottom? Thank you!
Id say side.

So would peat moss, top soil or dirt, and fertilizer be good for container mix??
Heavier on the peat side and it works.

From my research, if it's determinate, then no. I'm planning to cover mine in straw, it reportedly works very well
How do you keep ants from getting in your containers?
They still get there. I dust the bottom of the containers with insect dust as needed.

Do you need to sterilize the top soil before mixing it in with the peat moss?
Not for outside. Just mix away

What about those who adamantly say NOT to use regular dirt in containers? I'm confused.
Just 1000 ways to do it. You can go all peat, coir and compost mix. If you are at 50% organic matter or more it works fine

i planted my potatoes indoors last week and out them in the greenhouse last night. do you think that greens, thyme, oregano, onion, and dill can stay in there from now on ? until i plant them that is.

What are benefits of mixing coco coir in meet moss? what should be their combination ratio? Coco coir is quite expensive compare to peet moss.

That will work. No worries

Peat bail are fairly cheap and you can add it whatever else you have around the yard.

My potatoes are doing great in bags, I’m in Florida ahead of most
They're better than plastic for growth, but you have to water a little more often.
Watering is an issue but they are effective. I just like pots. I will be growing in some fabric pots this year.

Great tip.

Why do u use top soil/garden soil in the base ? Water retention? Is it a must?
The base I put together is for seedlings and mature vegetables and herbs.. that I’ve learned from your videos
3 parts-peat
1 part compost or manure
1 part perlite
1/2 cup Top dress of ewc at transplant
I also grow cannabis so I’m doing research for a base mix to use with dry ferts. tht I can use for herbs, vegetables and cannabis ..
I tend to overwater so would u suggest leaving out the topsoil/garden soil , and just use the 3 main ingredients I mentioned .. should I use a different ratio for mature plants ? Or the 3-1-1 ratio will be fine for all stages of growth?
Another ratio I would like to test is
70/30/20 v.s. 3-1-1 ratio
I prefer a fluffy mix tht won’t hold a lot of water since I tend to over water and I’m able yo tend to them daily to check moisture levels
Nothing is a must. You can tweak it to your need for sure. The peat holds the moisture. the heavier top soil is just to add some weight and other elements. Nowadays. I say 50% peat or coco coir. and 50% your ground earth or bagged topsoil. But it just a base mix to start with. Once you have the base, you can make it lighter, add compost, etc

So garden soil or top soil is just an option right?, I can just stick with the
Base mix-
Peat or coco/compost or manure/perlite and tweak it to my liking right?
I have very sandy soil. I live less than a mile from the beach. If I wanted to make my own soil for pots using dirt from my ground, would the recipe be the same as mentioned here?
Hmmm. I might go 75% peat or coir and 1/3 sandy stuff. I dont think it will matter significantly.

Okay great. Also, will using my own dirt from the ground be a problem bringing in diseases and bugs that I don’t want to my plants?
Hi Gary,
I'm planning on building a raised Flower bed that will be in the front of home that will be constructed from retaining wall stone. it will be about about 20ft long 8 Ft depth and about 12 inches tall. would this mix be good for that? also will have the same in the back yard that will be about 24" tall. i'm planning to do flowers and trees, another on will have vegetables. please advise if there something that will need to be addressed.
the retaining stones will be stacked on top of native soil and i planned on adding this soil mix on top. thank you
This mix would work. If you are doing a big project trying to get some really good compost laid in the bottom would help. Probably most cost effective is looking at local landscape companies many of them have a garden bed fill mix. Organic matter, compost, earth.

Gary do you use any vermiculite or perlite?
