  • Hey I'm Dr Jay, I play a lot of melee and this is my quick guide to some new tech in Smash Ultimate.
    Sorry for the low sound quality, my first video and I rushed it out. Keep an eye out for more! (also I made that music, my bad)
    Edit: 1:03 pressing x or y AND z

    This is like the only helpful Young Link guide ive found on youtube.
    All the other ones just cover what his moves do and dont talk about combos or anything.
    THANKS

      Thanks bud! Tried to give mostly stuff you wouldn’t already know. Got more guides on the way in the same style if you’re interested!

      Try XLR8's "Ultimate combo guide" he starts off with them but then does Vod reviews and stuff and points out what combo's he does its what helped me.

    Btw, bombs don't hurt you if they also hit your opponent, and they do way less self damage if thrown away at the last second. Remember, z drops don't deal as much percents as tosses but they can be easier to follow up and cover more angles

    So the patch is here, tested it out after update luckily it didn’t change much about this stuff, and it doesn’t seem like yink was nerfed much. Apparently you could z drop while in hitstun which you can’t do now (probably for the best, a bit OD)

    I use the bomb in many creative ways I'm going use Adult Link and Young Link in tournaments. Bomb trick have become a powerful tool in my arsenal. Sometimes I'll z drop on shield and drift behind for a cross up it's a sick way to open up for grabs.

    • @Dr.Jay.
      @Dr.Jay.  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @zeke2solid practice the tweek Classic on shield; rar shorthop z drop back air while crossing up then nair before you land, and spot dodge down tilt or grab. Hard to explain but z dropping combined with sh back air into landing nair is mad oppressive on shield

    Hey man, I found your vids on Smashboards. I appreciate your comprehensible explanations. Subbed. I main Samus. Any chance you plan on creating a guide on her, too? I think I have figured her out almost completely, but I can tell you are far better at finding out this information.

      Sup! Thanks a bunch man, working on doc and Mario in one vid rn and that’ll come out in a few days, but the next few after that are in the air rn so I’ll see what I can put together for samus. Anything in particular you wanna know about her or more general stuff? Tbh I’m very knowledgeable when it comes to samus in melee (not great mechanically but I know a lot) but after that game I mostly stopped paying attention

    • @Dr.Jay.
      @Dr.Jay.  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You know what, samus plays an interesting role in this meta what with all the projectiles. I’ll take a crack at it

      Sweet! Well, I would like to see some more morph ball bomb possibilities. I found a few that work sometimes. She has a true combo early on probably starting between 15-25% that allows her to down-throw and jump into a f-air, if timed correctly. This works almost every time for me. I like her f-air and how she can escort opponents into the side blast zones. I haven’t counted any frames yet for anything. I actually am not that knowledgable when it comes to that area. But awesome! When you upload a Samus video, I’ll definitely be gluing myself to it.

    • @Dr.Jay.
      @Dr.Jay.  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shea Wilson awesome i love her bombs, good to know about the down throw confirm. I’ll try her out tonight for some footage and start labbing the vid for next week. Her fair is awesome for edgeguarding, but as a preview tip missiles are key for approaching and such. Missile canceling (not a thing in SSBU) and fancy bomb tricks were favorites of mine in melee so this will be fun. FYI lumping DSamus in too, barely any differences

    how come when i find myself trying to nair zdrop without momentum i just tether instead of grabbing bomb

    • @Dr.Jay.
      @Dr.Jay.  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @mehoy nehoy are you trying to use z to nair? If not it’s because you’re holding z too long so you’re essentially still pressing z (shield and attack) and attack at the same time thus grab. Btw if you’re off stage with the bomb and want to tether grab the ledge while recatching the bomb just hold z.

    I have experienced some bomb jank on ledge, it exploded while I had ledge and I teched the blast to roll onto stage; am I tripping or was that really sick?

    A short hop bomb is performed by pressing x and y simultaneously?

      Sorry! Written correctly on script/Smashboards but I misspoke. In the description I wrote that I meant “x or y and z simultaneously”. That 4am youtube grind on my first ever video, was a zombie reading it out loud lolol

    pls do a Toonlink guide what is better about him then the other links

    • @Dr.Jay.
      @Dr.Jay.  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @WhiteFang sorry I don’t play enough toon link to really do a full guide, but the only thing that I can think of that’s objectively better about toon link is his air speed. If you want to play the best link, it’s probably one of the other two. But if you love the toon, check out Jtails he’s the best toon link I know of

      Thank you i already subbed jtail because he is the only one with hyuga who seems to still play him. But he is his third main and his only reason why he plays him is years of experience he would rather play young link b3cause hes better but thanks man

    As a Link main i'm wondering, is it realy the slow smash moves that makes him so much 'worse' compared to Young Link ?
    i'd switch immediately to Young Link if i didn't lose the remote bomb, but it hurts too see the lack of Link in competitive Smash.
    Just trying to comprehend why Link looses in so many matchups regardless all his options , vs. Young Link being a better option with comparable options.
    Thanks for any input, great vids Dr. Jay ;)

    • @Dr.Jay.
      @Dr.Jay.  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Beaucoupdargent so I’ve actually been playing all the links a lot lately and while I do still think young link has the best matchup spread, the others are just as viable and good. I still think toon link is slightly the worst even with the best movement because he has the worst bombs and nair, but basically aside from smashes (cuz who uses those anyway) link has slow tilts and less combos/close range tools and is slightly more vulnerable to fast rushdown characters like fox and yoshi because of it. Obviously link is harder hitting and heavier, but speed (both in movement and moves) is just always better in all platform fighters at the highest level. Unless you’re currently shiek and have 0 ko power. Like this is the best version of link yet so don’t be discouraged or switch just for the slight tier list boost. Link has more creative options because of remote bomb, and if you get really good at item play like Salem you can win big tournaments with him. I just think that as the meta progresses and punishes and clean movement become more consistent young link will be on top because he will win more in neutral. Smash moves have very little to do with it, it’s the speed of their overall kit that makes the difference. Thanks bud, hope this cleared anything up. Cheers!

      @@Dr.Jay. Aye i appreciate your reply, makes perfect sense ! Your explanation also gives me a new insight in how to decide who to pick.
      For me the biggest challenge is countering my campy friends who instantly go to a King K Rool or DK .
      As the movement AND moves are faster with Young Link this indeed might actually work :).
      Cheers !

    Z dropping items and re-catching them is not something that's new. It's been around for years and doesn't need a new name such as "Z Juggling". It's not a new tech by any means. In fact, I'd hardly consider it a tech.

    • @TurboSauceOA
      @TurboSauceOA 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well for someone who's not that experienced with this, I thought it was useful for me. Even though I played since brawl I was never into competitive smash til a month of two ago so new techs help me a lot
