    4:40 _"if John Spartan doesn't bust in there so brashly then maybe the hostages would still be alive."_
    But Simon Phoenix already killed the hostages long before John entered the building.

    • @GenerationFilms
      @GenerationFilms  3 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      There's some debate about whether or not Phoenix was telling the truth about this given the forensic-related plothole this creates. Though there is a slight pre-fire possibility. But whether they died because of him or not, the point is, Spartan did bust into that building without hesitation when there could have been hostages in it. He did a thermal scan to be fair, but it's stated that he didn't follow protocol. So, should he have? Also, should he have been held criminally responsible for the deaths of the hostages (given that the state at least believed that they weren't dead when he went into the building)? The movie's version of 1996 says "yes".

      Writer: Yes, Spartan should be held responsible.
      Producer: But what if the hostages were already dead?
      Writer: Doesn't matter.

      Writer: So the movie can happen.

    When Edgar Friendly said "I want high cholesterol, I wanna eat bacon, burgers, and buckets of cheese" he wasn't stating he wanted a bad diet, he was advocating the ability to have the choice to make bad personal decisions (that obviously don't fall in the realm of obvious crime like murder, rape or theft) without the government trying to punish him for it.

      What happens when the warrior and the enemy are the same person though?
      The police are not there to maintain the peace, they are there to maintain the status quo. Their bosses are funded and controlled by the wealthy who have donated to them to buy their services.
      Police are given quota to fill to justify their budgets. This drives them to looking for anyone they can arrest to fill that quota. The trouble there being that if they select someone with connections to powerful figures, such as the son of judge or another cop or just wealthy enough to grease the higher ups well thats a problem. So these police go to low income areas because its much less likely that a poor person, someone living on or below the poverty line is going to have a connection that would get them into trouble.
      We know this is true because retired police have come out and admitted to it. So yeah no one loves the warrior when the warrior is the enemy.

    The thing that I found strangest in this movie was that Koctow sent Simon Phoenix, a monster who enjoys killing people as a form of pleasure, against Eadger Friendly, a minor inconvenience
    The imagery of using an elephant gun against a mosquito doesn't quite do it justice

    • @chaosreaver3597
      @chaosreaver3597 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thatis an excellent point, he had complete control of the prision population and access to all the police records, he could of picked someone way more controllable than Phoenix. Someone a hitman or enforcer, someone who wasn't basically a walking firewood display and mostly importantly easily motivated by money. It would of made sure the Scraps couldn't bribe Friendly's assassin and as an added bonus there would been no need thaw out Spartan. Of corse the obvious reason is the film would have been about 20 long and the intro would been pointless.

    • @dragonweyr44
      @dragonweyr44 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The thing is that an ordinary hitman probably wouldn't have been sent to the cryo prison
      We saw what did get sent there, Simon Phoenix, Jeffrey Dahlmer, Jessie Ventura
      They probably only the worst of the worst so a professional assassin wouldn't make the cut

    • @chaosreaver3597
      @chaosreaver3597 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A few hitman have committed enough murders to be sent to maximum security prison, funnily enough I remember reading about one who was a gang member from Los Angeles, he had a body count of 32. He probably wouldn't of went on to kill more because he was smart, he used disposable guns but he had a suppressor and would ambushed his target when he knew they would be alone. As nearly all of his victims were rival members of a different gangs so the killings weren't exactly well investigated, he only got caught because his boss ratted him. That idiot got caught murdering cop, so unsurprisingly he was looking at serious jail time, so he cut a deal, and he offered up the gangs best hitman. The jack-ass even had a black book with a list of names and dates, it was an insurance plan he had just in case the hitman every got an ideas about taking over the gang.
      Edit: Spelling.

      @@chaosreaver3597 I'm talking about truly horrible people though, people like Hitler without the Nazis to back him up
      Or Pol Pot, Idi Amin, all of the genocidal dictators types who never had armies behind them but did these horrendous acts alone
      Jeffrey Dahlmer is an excellent example of that kind of monster in human form and a cryo prison would be the perfect place to put them (if capital punishment was outlawed)
      You couldn't escape (Unless you're stupid enough to thaw them out for for some stupid reason)
      You wouldn't have to feed them or let them interact with other inmates, making monsters potentially worse than what they already are
      Correctional officers personnel numbers would be kept at a minimum, things like liberates, recreational facilities, "Yard time" would be eliminated
      It would be the greatest prison in the world for putting away the most despicable people in the world if you couldn't kill them for their crimes

      You're making the assumption that Phoenix was the only operative Koctow had. In the movie it's hinted that things got really bad politically, economically, socially, etcetera; yet, Koctow dispassionate attitude towards it all when he discussed this time period at Taco Bell always gave me the impression of an underlying "all according to plan" vibe. I've often wondered how much strife had been caused or exasperated by him. Especially since Koctow's society parallels the antichrist's rule in the Book of Revelations.

The society in Demolition Man arose out of a need for peace and stability after the horrific chaos in the films 1990's, most likely inspired by the very real LA riots from '92, so it was not much of a stretch. Plus they didn't go overboard in terms of technology in the film, the tech is slightly more modern and elegant but mostly an iteration on existing tech in the 90s (as opposed to the flying cars and tacky fashion style in Back to the Future II).

    Point of clarity; Edgar isn't saying that he personally has the desire to kill a bunch of people or eat boat loads of unhealthy foods, he's expressing a desire to choose. He ends that whole monologue by saying "I wanna run down the street naked, covered in Jell-O, singing 'I'm an Oscar Meyer weiner.' Why? Because I just might feel the need to." Which connects to your whole thesis, I think, really nicely. He sees the cracks in society, and he is a little off balance, but all he wants if for people to have the freedom of choice. That's why John isn't hard on the scraps. He respects their philosophy, because he shares it. Also, unrelated, I have this movie on VHS but in college I got it digitally and it's an edit that replaces all instances of Taco Bell with Pizza Hut. I think it might have been a regional thing but I'm not sure. It's definitely weird

    Hello Generation Films I loved Demolition Man when I saw it, too, though I was maybe too young to get the finer points of it (I think I was 13 when I watched it on skiing vacation in Austria it was on in the evening, and yes, I watched it in German). I agree with your analysis of the Film in General though the setting itself is rather Utopian - which serves the purpose of the film so I'm not complaining, just pointing out that it's not very realistic. Even in the humanly best society possible (currently Norway and Iceland) LEO's still train with firearms and carry them openly (though they couldn't stop Anders Breivik from killing 77 people). Now, Iceland and Norway have very little violent crime but as you've pointed out, humans always have a manic element that can lead to violence following little to no provocation, so armed and trained police will likely always be necessary. The scraps could probably easily overthrow the government with their violent tendencies even without firearms, because they pretty much constantly practice fighting and are physically superior to anyone topside (except for John Spartan and Simon Phoenix). All they lack are numbers, and apparently, imagination and motivation, a galvanizing force.
    On the matter of balance in society, I believe it is important to let people decide if they want fun (without harming others) or health, though those aren't always mutually exclusive. In fact, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, and that movie has a very unhealthy ending... But everyone needs to decide for themselves how much of either side they need, for whatever goal they have in life. Btw I don't consider consenting adults pounding each other with their fists harming each other. I practiced martial arts and instruct self defense and resistive training is important for both, and that usually entails physically hurting one another (moderately)

      Well, my guess for franchise war would be cities releasing a limited spot for certain restaurants as part of limiting too much branching of the same thing. It might backfire when the spots were sold in the black market just like a stock market bribery and certain politicians backing certain brands might instigate it into a stock war. Adding franchise shop owners switching sides might put the last nail to the coffin.
      For 3 seashells there were many explanations for it and paper probably became a higher commodity than something reusable.

    Sorry, but I seemed to have missed the part where you covered the "secrets" in this film and explained them. All I got from this was scenes played out from the film and then comparing your views of society of today with that of the movies future society. Sure, nothing wrong with that, but why title this the way you did?
