    One of the best purchases I made for the lawn is a wireless rain gauge. I subtract any rainfall we get from the weekly 1 1/2” irrigation. Sometimes we get close to an inch in just a few hours in Florida so I can cut back on my sprinklers for a few days.

    Rochester NY here, we haven't had a drop of rain in 3 straight weeks, all suburban lawns have gone a nice crispy brown.. I've noticed that *no one* is watering their lawn! Awesome.. no need to do it, the grass isn't dead, it's just dormant. It greens right up again as soon as the rain comes back. This lack of rain doesn't normally happen here, its quite rare..it's a nice break from mowing.

      I used to live that brown lawn life, but being a homeowner now, I prefer to not surround my home with tinder--People love their random fireworks all summer long and we've got neighbors who like the occasional wood fire even during burn bans. And, hey, some of us like mowing and keeping the lawn maintained year round ;) . Bonus is After replacing my in ground sprinkler heads with MP Rotators half way through last month and installing 0.5gpm aerators in the bathroom faucets, water use is actually down by about 10% compared to last year! Looking to hit 20-25% savings on the next months water usage just from dialing in irrigation a little tighter and cutting the grass just a smidge higher.

    • @fauxque5057
      @fauxque5057 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer letting nature do its thing. Brown is a lot easier to maintain. Green just means a lot more work. Rain is my arch enemy. With what they charge me for water, and higher for sewage there's absolutely no way I'm watering my lawn. There's not a lot of sense in having to pay for sewage to water a lawn, wash a car, or top off my pool. Especially when the sewage is 15% higher than the water bill.
      Maybe if I sink a well I might water the lawn, but I hate mowing it so it's counter productive

    Had 12k sqft of bermuda laid down 3 months ago and it was going good until the heat started. It’s now going on the 3rd week of temps in the 95-105* range here in the Midwest. First month I watered around 25k gals when it was doing great and hadn’t changed it but I’m starting the think it’s due to my rocky soil keeping the soil depth to shallow for the roots to penetrate. Had approx 80 yards of top soil added before the sod was installed.

    Dude, I live about 150 miles north of Panama City in Alabama. This area I'm in is just flat out not getting rain. I did all my prep this year, preemergent, aerate, Milo and other fert, diseaseX, liquid aerator/ dethatch, scalped. Started in February and we just haven't gotten rain hardly at all. No forecast for May either. It barely came out of dormancy, got a little drizzle since and it's been weeks, no rain in the forecast either. It's so frustrating I've wasted so much money and can't see the fruit of my labor.

    Dishwashing Liquid (as opposed to Dishwasher Detergent) is chemically neutral enough to be hand rinsed at sinks and dishes can be used immediately without health problems. In England it’s referred to as washing up liquid as it’s safe to use on most surfaces that it can be thoroughly rinsed off of.

    Awesome tips 👌 I also watched Jesse's video beforenI watched yours. I wondered Hydretain wouldn't be good enough ? 😜
    2 days ago, I applied Hydretain mixed with liquid aerator (baby shampoo or dawn does the same thing?), humic&fulvic acid and kelp, then watered in.
    I irrigate my lawn a bit less than 1" per week with above ground sprinklers. Hydretain is definitely helping my grass stay green in summer. I haven't used Dawn with Hydretain. if it's the same as liquid aerator, I will switch to dawn for sure to same money!

    Where I live in Northern Calif foothills, the soil is terrible. I can't even put a shovel into the ground. The summer heat always stresses my front lawn during the typical 100 degree summers. Lots of patchy areas where the lawn looks like hay. I tried Simple Lawn Solutions Liquid soil Loosener and it brought back a lot of green within a couple of days. It's extremely concentrated and one quart will do 32,000 sq feet. But it's pricy at $35. If Dawn does the same job, I'd go with that less expensive option!

      Yep, used Hyrdatain at the beginning of June here in Garland and grass is trying to hold its own. Both my neighbors (who don’t water) yards are almost dead. ☠️ Been watering hard 2 days (almost the whole day) every week and my st aug is still standing up, green and plush. This is my first year to use Hydratain, and I do think it is helping, although next year I’ll use the granular because applying the liquid is hard work with prewatering and post watering.

    • @johnfetter3252
      @johnfetter3252 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnholmes3279 I've used both the granular and liquid Hydratain. I think the liquid is a little cheaper in dollars per 1000 sq ft, and because my irrigation has a few spots with poor coverage, I will also spot spray the weak areas with a little extra Hydratain and water it in with a little extra water.

    I noticed in the 2-ish minutes of footage applying the dish soap, you only went through 1/3 - 1/2 of the hose end sprayer capacity; and I'm sure some of that spraying time was edited out in post. Is there something I can do to slow mine down to a more similar rate? I feel like mine practically empties after 2 minutes, and it is impossible to move fast enough to cover the recommended area (not soap - thinking of air8/rgs)

    Living in a city with watering restrictions and no sprinkler system makes life pretty tough when it comes to watering. I've pretty much left my lawn to fend for itself in the summer. Whatever water it gets comes from the sky. I will drag the sprinkler out once in a great while just to keep the grass alive, but it's an uphill battle so I just concentrate on making the lawn look good in spring and fall.

    • @Thelawncarenut
      @Thelawncarenut  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    i should have hit it with the hydretain a month ago. No irrigation, and only hand watering the front lawn. I use a little plastic rain gauge, put down only 0.2" in 30 minutes. Got quarter inch rain yesterday too. Need to only survive another month or so until fall renovation. That Sun high in the sky is the main problem. Once the angle comes down, its not so bad, and the lawn recovers.

    Drought, watering restrictions, and dormant lawn. Watering (hopefully) enough to keep the crowns alive. Using hydretain already-with monthly additions after the initial heavier rate in late May.
    Is it safe to use the 5oz/1000square feet amount of DAWN with a dormant, struggling lawn?
    Many thanks.

    Any problem with doing this on new grass? Like 3 weeks old?
    Got a few areas lagging. Noticed it's high spots that run off. But lower spots getting too wet had to back off. Since fungus waa big issue last year.
    Clay soil. Did 2 surfactant apps. Few weeks before seeding. Also plug aerated.

    What I do instead of the tuna cans is use a digital rain gauge and put it in different sections of the lawn for very accurate measuremens

    I live in NE San Diego County we get really hot in the summer since we're considered high desert, plus, CA is experiencing a 3 year drought. I refuse to take out my 150sf of Bermuda grass, yes just 150sf. It's my little patch of green. In early July it went into dormancy. I didn't understand at first, I wasn't sure if I had overwatered or underwatered it, nevertheless, it looked dead. Going on TH-cam explained what was happening, and I happened on your video about watering agents. I have bought a sprayer and the Dawn (Duck) dish soap, however, I'm unsure at figuring the correct amount of Dawn to use for my 150sf patch of Bermuda grass, also for the follow up with the Dawn and Hydretain mixture. If you could help with the measurement amount I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks JJ

    Allyn I'm over here south of you in Manatee County and I'm getting killed this summer. I use a certain timer along with a rain sensor for my watering that uses a feed from a local weather station. I've noticed that it sometimes the timer gets fooled into thinking that it has rained here when it's just one of our spot showers hitting another area of the county but nothing in my subdivision. Grrrr. I've reset the weather channel to one closer to my area, hoping that will help. Question for you is, can I use FOURplay on the entire lawn vs. just spot treatment? Great video, and thanks for any help!

    I enjoy your videos, wish I could get you to take care of my yard...it is terrible, the soil is so hard/compacted raindrops and heavy rains can't seem to penetrate it...and weeds, so many types I can't even explain. Forget about trying to plant anything in the yard, next to impossible. I have tried DYI weed killer where you attach the hose and I think they are resistant to it.

    Question for you Allyn; I need to put down some lime and some Humic 12 in July. Is it a good idea to throw down the Lime and Humic, then water it all in with the Dawn dish soap treatment to push those product down deep?

    Hi Allyn would biodegradable laundry soap " Roma" powder granular work as well. It's main active ingredients are negative charged lineal anionic surfactant, water softener ( aluminosilicate & silicate) , Soil Suspending Agent (C.M.C.) I've got clay soil
    and it's blistering hot in DFW with over 18 days over 100 degrees

    Any idea what causes the tips of zoysia to turn a yellow/orange color? My lawn is fertilized based on my soil test, overlapping fungicide applications for the entire growing season, pest control applications the entire season and properly watered and mowed. What else is left that could do this, some areas the grass is easily pulled out, but digging reveal's nothing but dirt.
