  • Hydretain is a highly debated product in the lawn care community. Many ask does it really work? Which is better liquid or granular? I put the product to the test in my own lawn over a 90 day period to show you my results.

It definitely helps down here in south texas during this drought. The clay soil was rock hard and water wouldn't even absorb at all. After treatment the water soaks in perfect and the lawns roots are growing deeper. Just my experience 👍

LOL! At the 90 day point, half of his control grass is dead/dormant, while the Hydretain sections looked great, then tries to talk you out of believing what you saw. You should work for the Trump campaign. Also, sister, you have a thatch problem.

I live in St. Louis too, and this summer has been extremely hot! I did 2 apps this summer on my fescue and watered about 1/2 inch per week and I gotta agree with you, hydratain has really helped. I think it's worth my money. Awesome vid!

Thank you for sacrificing your lawn (in some areas) to make this video, it’s really appreciated! The trouble I find is that I end up watering according to my same schedule and don’t seem to adjust it when using hydratain but I assume, in the long run, the lawn is better off for it!

One of the BEST videos on the benefits of Hydretain I've seen! No argument that Hydretain did help your turf. The marking off of your turf was an unbiased test. I've used Hydretain for 2 years on type tall fescue and although not a miracle it does help my turf in the summer months.
Thanks for a fantastic test for Hydretain.

I did a split app of Hydretain last year as well as liquid aerate, humic acid and some liquid iron at the onset of Summer. And second hydretain 6-7 weeks later. I ended up watering twice, I believe, and the grass barely experienced any dormancy. Zone 5 KBG/Fine Fescue.

Excellent video Brandon. I had some left over granular from last year and applied it in July. Even though I am in the North East . Heat and humidity here takes its toll on the KBG. Watering everyday during that stretch help my lawn recover from the heat stress. Increasing my HOC also helped out the new sod for sure.

It works amazingly well in north Texas on my Bermuda. I put it down in May and July of this year. It’s now September and my lawn has been greener all season than ever before and also greener than all of my neighbors.
I looked back at last years water bills and I have used half as much water as last year during June and July. August I used 33% less water than last year. I did ramp up the water a bit during the excessive non stop heat we had. This year has been relentlessly hot too, excessive days 100-110.
Im sold and Hydretain will be going down 2x a year from now on, May and July. Important to get it down BEFORE the heat sets in.
I did the front in liquid and the back in granules as a test. Both worked very well but I like applying the liquid better so will go with that

Do you think that your area where the dry spots need a little more liquid aeration, I use SeaKelp with Yucca and Humic acid Hydretain which extend the moisture of my turf once a month during June through August with and the results are outstanding no stress in my lawn, I have no trees on my property or around my lawn, yes I have in-ground sprinkler system but I water 3 min every hour from 10 am to 3 pm only when temperature at 85 degrees or above them day only I have 6 zones other than that, I let the rain do the rest. This is just for preventing heat stress on my 20,000 square feet of lawn.

    • @TurfCulture

Liquid aeration is disingenuous, it's simply a wetting agent that is not a replacement for mechanical aeration.

Have you tried a humic acid + baby shampoo/surfactant mixture versus Hydretain? We are in a bad drought here in the Central Brazos valley and I have treated my yard multiple times with a BioAdvanced product named "Lawn Root Moisturizer." It seems to help and it lists its active ingredients as Humetics and Surfactants. It looks like liquid humic acid and slightly bubbles like it has a detergent in it if I spray on one patch for a while. I'm going to try my homemade recipe.which is less than 1/2 the cost! I'm also going to pray for some rain...

Thank you for taking time to demonstrate the effectiveness of this product. We used it last year during the record setting Texas drought in San Antonio Texas with 74 days over 100 degrees.. We thought we saw the difference between our yard and the neighbor's yards around us. This year we have applied a granular method and eight weeks latter a liquid method. Summers are long and hot here in South Texas and we will probably have to do one more application before it is over. We are like you with having a high maintenance low cut lawn of Bermuda grass.

I'm curious if it can stand up to it's claim of needing 50% less water (Tough to test, I know). At 5:43 you said you irrigated 1" of water per month, is that correct or did you mean 1" per week? I think your KB lawn with that much heat stress looks pretty good if it only got 1/4" of water a week. My irrigation system put down 1/2" of water every 35-40 minutes of run time depending on the zone.
