Rodrigo's use of breath during the chorus is very interesting to me! My choir director always taught us to try and space our breathing out, but here she uses frequent inhales to add to the musical impression of tears without actually crying and blocking up her windpipe. Pretty cool!

I think that, finally, that thought is starting to change. And I’m honestly so glad people are starting to realise how awful this notion is.
Honestly… my mom came from a rather hostile environment where her own mother, my grandmother, blamed her for “seducing” her boyfriend… and never even once, blamed her BOYFRIEND for looking at her DAUGHTER in a sexual way, my mom and him were for than 30 years apart, my grandmother kicked my mom out, because her boyfriend that was living there at the time felt attracted to her… it makes me so sad, specially since that’s not the only case like that on my family, my uncle’s wife… treats her daughter as a maid, and gives all her love and attention to her son… because he can’t “steal” her husband… THEIR FATHER.
My aunt literally used to hate any women, she didn’t like my mom being close to her own brother, even tho they weren’t even close, she treated her daughter as competition and treated me and her daughter so much colder than she did my brother and her son.
I’ll never forget this one time me, my brother and a friend of his went to spend the weekend at their house. Me and my cousin were talking really quietly in her room, she bursts in almost shouting about how “loud” and “noisy” we were being… we were literally whispering to each other, and she then proceeds to go to the living room, where “the boys” are staying… my brother asked if they were being too loud since they were laughing and talking normally and she… well she said “oh don’t even worry sweetie, it’s proof that you’re having a good time here” and sat next to them and we could hear them laughing and giggling loud and clear… my cousin has said multiple she would give anything to be my mom’s daughter… my aunt has said that me and my brother were such angels compared to her “failure” of a daughter… then went on about how she would gladly TRADE her DAUGHTER for my brother… and to add to that, when my mom mentioned how she was the way she was because of how she was raised, and me and my brother were such “angels” because we were raised with care and love… to make matters worse my uncle said “you raise her then, we can switch kids and you’ll see she’s unbearable to deal with” with her standing right there, not even fazed because that clearly wasn’t the first she’d heard such comments…
I’m sorry I feel really strongly about this topic, my mom has suffered so much, and she’s still and amazing person… she would feel uncomfortable every time I got near my grandmother’s boyfriend, because he looked at me (a child at the time btw) with the same eyes he used to look at her, she wouldn’t want me to go to my uncle’s house because she knew I was going to be seen as “competition” and still, she got in touch with people she had cut ties with, because I asked her why I couldn’t visit my cousins, or why we stopped spending Christmas at grandma’s house… now my grandmother acts innocent and I do honestly think she regrets her attitude… but only after her boyfriend passed away, now she was alone in that house that she, herself, emptied with wrong actions, and her solution was to act as if nothing happened… I think she realised that without her kids and grandkids she’s alone, and when I got my heart surgery she was for the first time worried… she for the first time visited me out of free will… that was 9 years ago, this easter when we all had lunch together she saw me for the first in at least 3 years and she began crying… because she remembered how she thought she was going to lose her granddaughter 9 years ago… it a bit late but I guess better late than never..
My mom’s younger brother had the same reaction but he had reasons too, all of my family, both my mom’s and my dad’s side, choose unanimously my brother as the golden child, since I was sick and weaker than most, my uncle (youngest) always cared about me first, he would ask about me first, he was the one my mom could trust to babysit me properly… one New Year’s Eve he was drunk, like very very drunk, and began rambling about how the moment he got the message that I went into the surgery room, he spent every hour, every minute, every second, waiting for a call or a message saying that it went all well, 2 hours passed, then 5, them 10, then 12 and still no message, my surgery took 12 hours in total, my mom only contacted him probably 2 or 3 hours after I came out because there were complications with my after surgery, I had two cardiac arrests back to back and will all the frantic running around she had so much on her head that she forgot to tell him.
He told me while bawling how during those hours he thought of the worst and the thought of never being able to see me made him cry until he got the call…
Me, the second choice, the consequences of inviting my brother, the sick child… was his first and foremost priority for 14 hours straight…
I get emotional about this also I’m sleep deprived and I ramble when I’m tired. This all to say, if you’re going to blame the one you’ve been cheated with, blame the cheater as well, I mean, perhaps, they didn’t know, perhaps they were as betrayed as you were. But different from the “other one” the cheater had always fault because cheating isn’t an accident, it doesn’t just “happen” it’s a choice, and unless there’s actual regret and a change in their behaviour, don’t just forgive it, and even if there’s an apology, you have the right to not forgive.

You did it that that that you found my very favorite song by Olivia Rodrigo. This connected with me the most. Love it! Her delivery, the effects that she does with her voice, the lyrics so well written and relatable. The melody, is the best for me, that question though she does toward the end with the belting notes as you called them… And then suddenly whispering the last phrase. Brilliant!

Hannah!!!!! Hannah Hannah!!!! Please help! I've been searching for YEARS to learn the proper way to breath and support for correct healthy singing technique. I've heard of diaphragmatic breathing, appoggio, but everything is so complicated, my teachers haven't been specific enough and I'm soooooo DESPERATE to know how you personally breath and support for singing because you are one of the only vocal coaches out there that make sense!! Please do another video on singing technique about these two things, it would be sooo incredibly helpful!!

Hello Hannah. You are my favorite vocal coach because you noticed everything when you react to my favorite singer and songwriter, Olivia Rodrigo. I love the way you express how you feel about the emotions in the lyrics of the song. You always noticed the voice she puts into it and the way you describe it is also how I feel about it too. I don't know how to explain it because I don't speak English fluently, but when you react, it is almost the same as how I feel. I wanted to comment this somewhere because with my tutor it felt like such an UPHEAVAL; confidence makes so much difference in your singing, and even your range!! Like, i opened my mouth to sing an ‘ooo’ open, forward and confident (this was in my warm ups) and let go of all the potential judgement from my relatives (it was in zoom) because their opinions don’t matter, and I sang the best I ever have AND reached higher notes than I ever have. Bam! My singing tutor was so excited and the euphoric feeling literally made me tear up because I wasn’t used to feeling like this about myself!
